Tami,

Of course those passes are sold out. Scalpers buy those things for events like this.

The point is that there is non-Braves operated parking near TF. Always has been, always will be.

If you need Marta, then go north of the stadium and park and ride Marta. You can park downtown (cheap) and ride Marta, or try the east line.

Most won’t ever consider this, but the Inman Park stop is a pretty good place to park & ride. All depends on if you are willing to sacrifice time before/after the game, getting to and from.

I’ve said it on this blog many times, there is ample security after the games all the way from TF up to the Georgia State Marta Station; or, you can take the shuttle from the stadium to the Underground, and pick up the train there.

Saying Marta is “nowhere within” your route to TF, sounds a little bit dramatic, given that Marta runs a bus right to the front gate of TF.

Ben, Yes, taxi is a posibility, assuming you are coming from downtown.

But I’ll also add this, the worst traffic leaving the game is if you park in one of the Braves lots, especially the one that sits on old Fulton County Stadium.

IMO, the further you are from the stadium (within a degree of reason), the better.

Comment From Dan Haren
I hear Angels are declining my $15 mil option, what type of deal can I expect to find?

3:27
Ben Nicholson-Smith: That report caught me off-guard a little, since I had thought they’d exercise Haren’s option. They still could, but if they don’t I can see either a one-year, pillow contract or a four or five year deal for $13MM or so per season.

Comment From Tom
Any chance the Braves go ahead and try to lockup Freeman and Heyward to long term contracts this offseason?

3:32
Ben Nicholson-Smith: Yes, I’d say there’s a chance.

Comment From frank wren
What can i get in return for Hanson and Jair?

3:41
Ben Nicholson-Smith: Hanson probably still has a fair amount of trade value, though not nearly as much as he did when he seemed to be on his way to becoming an ace and was still pre-arbitration eligible.

Jurrjens has no trade value and will likely be non-tendered.

Didn’t really answer the question, esp. w/ Hanson. As for the 1st question, no need to lock up Freeman this winter.

Last I checked, the Nats and Reds were tied. So there is a chance the wild card game winner will face the Reds, not the Nats. Why do all the Braves beat writers keep suggesting the Braves would face the Nats in the second round? The wild card winner plays the team with the best regular season record. With the way the schedule lines up, I wouldn’t be surprised if that team is the Reds

Actually Disbott, The Braves have “eliminated” all teams below St. Louis from contention in the WC game.

Braves have 89 wins
Dodgers & Brewers each have 75 losses

89 + 75 = 164

Not true. They only eliminated MIL and LAD from taking their spot. They (MIL or LAD) can still unseat the CARDS.

Tonight’s lineup vs. MIA (7:10, SPSO/680AM/BRN): Constanza 8 Prado 7 Heyward 9 Jones 5 Freeman 3 Uggla 4 McCann 2 Simmons 6 Maholm 1

There must be a typo…this says that Constanza is batting 1st.

Even though I’m not a huge fan of it, I’d actually rather have the pitcher batting 8th than Constanza 1st. Just shift everyone up one spot (and him to 9th), and this lineup looks half decent.

The contract I will get this off season will be for … ?

Ben Nicholson-Smith: My guess: Carl Crawford money (seven years, $142MM).

Ben Nicholson-Smith: I know Bourn has been slumping, but he’s an elite defender in center field who adds value on the bases and with his bat. I think he’ll get paid.

Comment From Golden Tate
7 years for Bourn! good lord that’s a lot of money

Ben Nicholson-Smith: I know… but I’ve under-estimated top free agent contracts for long enough. I think Bourn is in line for a major payday.

He thinks he’s understimated top free agent contracts, but to give Bourn that much is insane! Even with him being an elite defender who adds value with the bat and on the bases, that’s a stupid contract to hand to him

No one can be that stupid to pay Bourn that kind of money. Safe to say these are Bourn last days in a Braves uniform if he does anything like that.

Ben Nicholson-Smith: It only takes one owner. By definition Bourn will get more than what most of the industry would want to give him.

Comment From Angel Pagan
Aren’t I a better value for the dollar??

3:52
Ben Nicholson-Smith: Yes. I mean whoever signs Michael Bourn/Josh Hamilton will not be getting a value play. They’ll be getting an elite player at market value.

Comment From Pete
Since 2009, Bourn has the same WAR as Mauer & Prince (19.9). He needs to get paid -somewhat- close to them.

3:53
Ben Nicholson-Smith: That’s one of the points his agent will make this winter.

Comment From Bo
Who will give Bourn that kind of money? Washington? Philly?

3:54
Ben Nicholson-Smith: My instinct is to say the Nationals won’t do it. Their internal options are pretty good so I don’t think they need to be the high bidder.

Barry Bonds hit .355/.570/.782/1.352 with a 252 OPS+ (141 HR) in his age 37-40 seasons (434 games, 1831 PA’s)… Those 4 seasons combined… compared to the entire history of the game for single season OPS+ ranks… those 4 seasons would be 6th all time, behind Bonds, Bonds, Bonds, Dunlap(1884), and Ruth.

We would be the host team against SF in Round 1, while the Nats would have to play a 1 game playoff against someone, and then the winner of that would get the first 2 at home against Cincy (although if Cincy is able to advance they could potentially have 5 home games in a row between the two rounds).

Here is a nice piece on MLBTradeRumors:

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/09/extension-candidate-kris-medlen.html

Cost-certainty is also of particular interest to a franchise that has kept a mid-level payroll since being bought by Liberty Media in 2007. The Braves had a $102MM payroll in 2008 but have since ranged between $86-$93MM, with only $15MM in committed salary for 2013. If they believe Medlen is the real deal, an extension could save the team millions through Medlen’s arb years. Extending him now would cost maybe $10MM over three years ($2MM in 2013, $4MM in both 2014 and 2015) with perhaps a $6MM club option for Medlen’s first free agent year.

The Braves have a lot of business to attend to this winter, since such major names as Hanson, Jason Heyward and Jonny Venters are also arb-eligible for the first time, Martin Prado is only a year away from free agency and the team is expected to at least attempt to re-sign Michael Bourn. Given Medlen’s injury history and the fact that his arb number may be $2.4MM at the most, Atlanta could be in no rush to pursue a multiyear deal quite yet with the right-hander.

Medlen will get one (very high-profile) further chance to prove himself as he’s scheduled to start for Atlanta in the wild card playoff game. Just the fact that the Braves would give Medlen this start is a sign that they believe he’s more than just a pitcher on a hot streak, so they could also be eager to lock him up while his price is still low.

Tami, here is where you should park in relation to the field. easiest way to get there is off of the university parkway exit off of I-85: http://goo.gl/maps/m7tbt

It’s like if someone told me Jennifer Love Hewitt was fat and ugly, I would kick their arse.

I used to spend my days on the Party of Five blog, but the exchanges got too heated on show days.

I think I would wait too. I am not a big fan of extending pitchers earlier than necessary

I would like to see Prado extended – I wonder what kind of deal he gets. Is 4 years $36 million sound about right – its kind of hard to find comparables for him.

I find it unlikely he would accept that deal

No kidding. That guy must think $10MM is a lot of money. :-)

You tell a kid “never turn down the chance to make your first fortune”, but that isn’t a “fortune”, in baseball terms. If I’m his agent, I sneer at that.

I think it would have to be structured like…

2013: $2M 2014: $4M 2015: $6M 2016: $6M 2017: $7M club option ($1M buyout)

Four years, $19 million. Five years, $25 million if the option is exercised.

I’ll even add an extra million to each year….

2013: $3M 2014: $5M 2015: $7M 2016: $7M 2017: $8M club option ($1M buyout)

Four years, $23 million. Five years, $30 million if the option is exercised.

Medlen’s body of work, while apparently unprecedented, is way too small to be paying out a fortune for.

Let’s see him go through next year like this, which is very, very unlikely, and then talk big dollars.

Gotta remember that he’s 27 already. If he goes five years out, the back-end money has to be closer to market value. He can’t afford to be under market for his prime years and hope to make it back in middle 30s.

scoots – I agree…sounds pretty sneerable. If I’m the Braves, I’d probably wait another year befor worrying about Medlen, anyway.

A month or two ago, many were trying to pay a fortune to the now forgotten Ben sheets based on 3 stellar outings….

While we’re at it, let’s pay Overbay 10 million and re-up Hinske for 5 million….

The reality is, when one is making millions of dollars – period – that if it’s taken care of, there’s no need to “make it back” at some point…..

Not how it works, of course, but good lord, pay me 10 million or so, and I think I’ll find a way to make it last and be quite grateful in the process….

Anyway we can get paid for blogging here?

Yeah, I might be willing to talk trades and stuff in the middle of a pennant race, but I’m gonna draw the line at contract extensions. :-)

Medlen will turn 27 next Sunday.

‘13: 27 year old season
‘14: 28
‘15: 29
‘16: 30
‘17: 31

Agreed ncsoots – doesn’t really seem advantageous for either side to extend. If Meds continues even at 80% of the success he’s had so far, he’ll be making $18 million + that first year of free agency. And in the interim, will still get paid pretty well in his arb years.
