The Braves have very little pressure on them right now. Certainly less so than the Nationals.
Despite completely unfounded comments by some here last night that the Braves were “not relaxed,” I thought they looked very loose and comfortable. And that helped them win, in the end.

If the Nats were playing the Marlins, Mets, and Pirates and we were playing the Phils and Cards, I’d say our chances were “improbable”. But since it’s reversed, I really like our chances to force a one-game, winner take all for the NL East play in game.
My prediction – Braves go 6-2, Nats go 2-6. Both end up 94-68. Huddy starts Thursday, Oct 4th on regular rest. Win or lose, Meds starts either the one-game wild card or Game 1 of the NLDS.

I don’t know that the Nats would feel any pressure until their lead is series-length or less. You tend to be pretty loose knowing that even getting swept leaves you in first. Chip off another game tonight, though, and who knows?
Really, only Werth has any experience with a pennant race, and I’m sure his brightest memory is 2007 and chasing down the Mets. If anything, he knows how that feeling of confidence and inevitability can arise in the chaser’s clubhouse. Still, it’s got to get a little closer before any of that would come into play, I think.

I love the way the team uses the the media to work in things like “parking is by permit only”, as if the Braves own every single lot within walking distance of TF.
Will parking be at a premium? Yes. Will you be able to find a parking spot on your own? Yes.

usnavyvolfaninva, your method uses smaller numbers and is easier to do in your head. But my method is a little simpler, since there’s one formula, regardless of whether you’re “half a game” back, or not.
I have a spreadsheet that tells me the magic numbers and elimination numbers for all teams, in each race. All I have to do is update the wins and losses by each team every day.

The old IBEW facility on Central Ave. no longer offers parking (although, I’m really not sure who or what is monitoring that lot). It used to be, if you were heading north after a game, that was just about the best place to have your car parked.

Ben (Leland Grove): Would you consider Luke Sims to be the same kind of mold as Sean Gilmartin and Mike Minor, or are you higher on him?
Matthew Eddy: Sims is definitely cut from a different cloth than Gilmartin or Minor, and you should expect different results. Just don’t expect them to come in Double-A until probably 2015. Sims pitched and also played shortstop in high school, so he’s not quite as refined as other first-round pitchers, but still the Braves must be excited with the raw tools — athleticism, plus fastball, plus curve — they have to mold into a pitcher.

The above formula is used to find the total number of wins by all Braves opponents this season (by individual game), adjusted by taking their games against the Braves out of their record. As of right now, that number is 11,120.

How can you have a total of over 11,000 wins?
For example, the Nationals have 93 wins. If you discount their games against Atlanta, they have 83 wins. The Braves have played the Nats 18 times. 83 times 19 is 1,577. That formula above is basically doing that for every team the Braves have played this season. They all add up to 11,120.
You have to do it that way, because the fact that the Braves play Washington 18 times, as opposed to 3 times, makes their schedule more difficult.

Eric (Atlanta): Can you explain what you mean by “A wrist wrap compromises his control of his breaking ball” with regard to Mauricio Cabrera? Also, what’s his ulitimate ceiling as a starter?
Matthew Eddy: When a scout says a pitcher has a wrist wrap, he’s referring to the excess motion at the back of his arm swing, where a pitcher will flick his wrist in an upward motion. The thought is that since this motion complicates one’s arm stroke and (theoretically) makes it more difficult to repeat one’s delivery taht it will affect release point and thus command. Good examples of big leaguers with wrist wraps are Ublado Jimenez or Homer Bailey.

Dave (Atlanta): Did any of Danville’s other Latin players (RHPs Ernesto Silva and Williams Perez, 1B Aris Alcantara, OF Felix Marte) impress?
Matthew Eddy: The two Danville prospects not ranked who stood out were 3B Carlos Franco and RF Felix Marte. Franco is a fine defensive third baseman with arm strength who switch-hits and has enough power to be interesting. Marte is more of a long shot because he’s limited to the corner outfield, but he has good balance and bat control at the plate. One manager described him as a quick-twitch player with power, so he’s at least interesting.

Wrong. The Braves’ magic number for clinching home field over the Brewers, Dodgers, or any other team is already zero. The only teams that can possible get the #1 wild card now are Washington, Atlanta, and St. Louis.
The Braves eliminated Milwaukee and Los Angeles from #1 wild card contention last night. Believe me, I’ve been keeping track of those magic numbers, too.

Richard B. (West Columbia, SC): What do you think is the ceiling for Mauricio Cabrera from Atlanta? Does he project as a #2/3 starter or a bullpen arm? Reports so far have been good and the Braves have a track record of turning guys like Cabrera into very serviceable MLB arms.
Matthew Eddy: Cabrera has the raw tools to start, so that’s why he ranked as the league’s top righty pitching prospect. He could develop an intriguing mid-rotation profile if his breaking ball takes another step forward in the next 2 seasons. Maybe you’d like to see him miss more bats or walk fewer batters against Appy competition, but that’s just nitpicking when talking about an 18-year-old who has had success and already holds 93-94 mph velocity though his starts.

In 251 PAs, the Braves as a team have a .210/.291/.279/.570 line against Josh Johnson, tonight’s Marlins starter. They have 46 Hits over 219 ABs. The only XBH against him are 9 doubles and 2 HR. The Braves have 13 RBI against him. They have drawn 25 BBs and have K’d 66 times.
The only batters to have never faced him are Boscan, Jeff Baker, Juan Francisco, and Tyler Pastornicky. Chipper and BMac have hit him well, with BAs over .260 across 40+ ABs.
Prado, Heyward, Bourn, Overbay, Uggla, and Freeman all struggle against him (min of 10 ABs). Uggla is in fact, hitless. Might be a good time to give him an off day. Rev at 2nd!!!
For his career, Johnson is 6-5 in 18 starts (104 IP) against the Braves with a 2.29 ERA. At Turner Field, in 7 starts (48.1 IP) , he is 2-0 with a 1.49 ERA.
