My prediction – Braves go 6-2, Nats go 2-6. Both end up 94-68. Huddy starts Thursday, Oct 4th on regular rest. Win or lose, Meds starts either the one-game wild card or Game 1 of the NLDS.

I don’t know that the Nats would feel any pressure until their lead is series-length or less. You tend to be pretty loose knowing that even getting swept leaves you in first. Chip off another game tonight, though, and who knows?
Really, only Werth has any experience with a pennant race, and I’m sure his brightest memory is 2007 and chasing down the Mets. If anything, he knows how that feeling of confidence and inevitability can arise in the chaser’s clubhouse. Still, it’s got to get a little closer before any of that would come into play, I think.
I love the way the team uses the the media to work in things like “parking is by permit only”, as if the Braves own every single lot within walking distance of TF.
Will parking be at a premium? Yes. Will you be able to find a parking spot on your own? Yes.
usnavyvolfaninva, your method uses smaller numbers and is easier to do in your head. But my method is a little simpler, since there’s one formula, regardless of whether you’re “half a game” back, or not.
I have a spreadsheet that tells me the magic numbers and elimination numbers for all teams, in each race. All I have to do is update the wins and losses by each team every day.

Why are we thanking Carroll for getting the knots out of her hair?
It seems I read something on here, last night, about her tweeting she had knots in her hair from the champaign. I’m not certain I even know what that means.
Brian,
I’d do that, too, but I can’t seem to master the formula creation on Excel. Simple additions is one thing, but coming up with that formula would probably take me all day.
Heyward is hitting .231/.264/.394 in his last 26 games dating back to August 27th – 110 plate appearances. He’s taken 5 walks, struck out 19 times in that timeframe.
The above formula is used to find the total number of wins by all Braves opponents this season (by individual game), adjusted by taking their games against the Braves out of their record. As of right now, that number is 11,120.
Get some indirect references in that thing man! Evaluating formulas like that drive me crazy…so much easier to create another sheet and break things into smaller pieces.
Good stuff–especially the part about sitting next to your girlfriend on the couch in your living room. Long distance (2 hours away) has been a part of my life for the past 16 months, which has cut into quite a bit of blogging time, yet is surely pleasurable in so many other ways,(such as: she’s become a Braves fan).
For example, the Nationals have 93 wins. If you discount their games against Atlanta, they have 83 wins. The Braves have played the Nats 18 times. 83 times 19 is 1,577. That formula above is basically doing that for every team the Braves have played this season. They all add up to 11,120.
You have to do it that way, because the fact that the Braves play Washington 18 times, as opposed to 3 times, makes their schedule more difficult.
Here you go scoots:
Eric (Atlanta): Can you explain what you mean by “A wrist wrap compromises his control of his breaking ball” with regard to Mauricio Cabrera? Also, what’s his ulitimate ceiling as a starter?
Matthew Eddy: When a scout says a pitcher has a wrist wrap, he’s referring to the excess motion at the back of his arm swing, where a pitcher will flick his wrist in an upward motion. The thought is that since this motion complicates one’s arm stroke and (theoretically) makes it more difficult to repeat one’s delivery taht it will affect release point and thus command. Good examples of big leaguers with wrist wraps are Ublado Jimenez or Homer Bailey.
Well, guys, it’s 3 because there is always the slight chance that the second wild card may not be the Cardinals. It is only 2 if that other position is the Cards, so there you go.
Alright Braves, keep chasing the Nats until it’s over. Maybe the Phillies would enjoy nothing more than to ruin their parade and will play them extra-tough. Go Braves!!

Dave (Atlanta): Did any of Danville’s other Latin players (RHPs Ernesto Silva and Williams Perez, 1B Aris Alcantara, OF Felix Marte) impress?
Matthew Eddy: The two Danville prospects not ranked who stood out were 3B Carlos Franco and RF Felix Marte. Franco is a fine defensive third baseman with arm strength who switch-hits and has enough power to be interesting. Marte is more of a long shot because he’s limited to the corner outfield, but he has good balance and bat control at the plate. One manager described him as a quick-twitch player with power, so he’s at least interesting.
Folks, this is a DISASTER. Folks, how can you tip your cap to this? Can you imagine the 20k EMPTY SEATS AT THE TED???? The Braves already have the worst fans on the planet…why show it on television?
Folks, I am usually here to Tip the Old Cappa but not this time. The Bravos worked really hard to get to this choke position. I rather them do it without the national spotlight…thank you very much!
Folks, no cap tipping today. Just thank the Lucky Stars that Fredi and Cocks are two different types of managers because we could be looking at more chocking let me tell you! Folks,
its gonna get ugly!
Well, guys, it’s 3 because there is always the slight chance that the second wild card may not be the Cardinals. It is only 2 if that other position is the Cards, so there you go.
Wrong. The Braves’ magic number for clinching home field over the Brewers, Dodgers, or any other team is already zero. The only teams that can possible get the #1 wild card now are Washington, Atlanta, and St. Louis.
The Braves eliminated Milwaukee and Los Angeles from #1 wild card contention last night. Believe me, I’ve been keeping track of those magic numbers, too.
I though about responding to Veer’s post, but I figured there’s no WAY someone would throw such a wet blanket over what happened last night, and actually mean it. Veer, you’re dead inside, dude.
He kinda had a point, that really, a team doesn’t just have a magic number relative to one team. Each team has a magic number relative to every other team in the league. It’s just that the magic number relative to the closest team is the one that is most relevant.
In this particular case, he is wrong because the Braves have already eliminated every other wild card team but the Cardinals.
Richard B. (West Columbia, SC): What do you think is the ceiling for Mauricio Cabrera from Atlanta? Does he project as a #2/3 starter or a bullpen arm? Reports so far have been good and the Braves have a track record of turning guys like Cabrera into very serviceable MLB arms.
Matthew Eddy: Cabrera has the raw tools to start, so that’s why he ranked as the league’s top righty pitching prospect. He could develop an intriguing mid-rotation profile if his breaking ball takes another step forward in the next 2 seasons. Maybe you’d like to see him miss more bats or walk fewer batters against Appy competition, but that’s just nitpicking when talking about an 18-year-old who has had success and already holds 93-94 mph velocity though his starts.
In 251 PAs, the Braves as a team have a .210/.291/.279/.570 line against Josh Johnson, tonight’s Marlins starter. They have 46 Hits over 219 ABs. The only XBH against him are 9 doubles and 2 HR. The Braves have 13 RBI against him. They have drawn 25 BBs and have K’d 66 times.
The only batters to have never faced him are Boscan, Jeff Baker, Juan Francisco, and Tyler Pastornicky. Chipper and BMac have hit him well, with BAs over .260 across 40+ ABs.
Prado, Heyward, Bourn, Overbay, Uggla, and Freeman all struggle against him (min of 10 ABs). Uggla is in fact, hitless. Might be a good time to give him an off day. Rev at 2nd!!!
For his career, Johnson is 6-5 in 18 starts (104 IP) against the Braves with a 2.29 ERA. At Turner Field, in 7 starts (48.1 IP) , he is 2-0 with a 1.49 ERA.

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

How can you have a total of over 11,000 wins?

Folks,

Actually Disbott, The Braves have “eliminated” all teams below St. Louis from contention in the WC game.
Braves have 89 wins
Dodgers & Brewers each have 75 losses
89 + 75 = 164

He kinda had a point, that really, a team doesn’t just have a magic number relative to one team. Each team has a magic number relative to every other team in the league. It’s just that the magic number relative to the closest team is the one that is most relevant.
In this particular case, he is wrong because the Braves have already eliminated every other wild card team but the Cardinals.

It’s just that the magic number relative to the closest team is the one that is most relevant.
Rather, the magic number relative to the team currently ahead, or for a team already in first, relative to the team in 2nd, is most relevant.
Probably a better way of putting it.
