Magic # / Division Title (yes, that’s right!) Update:
We’ve secured a playoff spot in the WC game. WooHoo!
The M# for the Braves to secure home field for that game = 3
St.Louis’ M# (over both LA & MIL) to secure the 2nd WC slot = 4
Nats M# to win the division is still = 5
SO, what about the NL East Division Title?
Both the Braves & Nats have 8 games remaining.
If the Nats go 5-3 in those games, they win.
Braves 8-0 + Nats 4-4 = 1-Game playoff for the title on the 4th.
Braves go 8-0 + Nats go 3-5 = Braves win title.
The Braves play all 8 games against losing teams who are out of the playoffs. Only 2 formidable SPs are left to face, JOSH JOHNSON and, possibly, JON NIESE, a lefty who historically is tough on the Braves.
The Nats play all 8 games against the Phillies & Cardinals. And they still must face WAINWRIGHT, LOHSE, KENDRICK (x2?) and HALLADAY.
I think the Nats going 4-4 is not out of the realm of possibility. The Braves running the table might be a slightly taller order. We need the Cards to still be playing for something when they face the Nats this weekend. Once they clinch the 2nd WC, they’ll go into “rest our players” mode and ease off the gas a little. Ergo, it’s time for Braves fans to start rooting for the Brewers and Dodgers to go on a mini win streak to force the Cardinals to keep winning through the weekend.
IF we’re going to win the division, I think the most likely development is a 1-Game playoff with the Nats on the 4th. It must be said, this COULD wind up shooting the Braves in the foot. Say we lose a tie-breaker to the Nats in Washington on Thursday. Then we have to play the WC play-in back in Atlanta on the 5th. If we win that game, we’d then start the division series against the Nats (again) or the Reds on Sunday the 6th, AND we’d have used our two best pitchers (MEDLEN & HUDSON) just to get through the 2 elimination games. It’d be nice to win the division, but maybe ONLY if we can do it in 162 games, and that looks kind of tough.
I don’t know BAS, I wouldn’t let somebody that toxic get anywhere near me in my life, but perhaps I am being too harsh..
Anyway too great of a night to dwell on it any more. Hoorah for the Braves.
Even if they get run out of town in the one game playoff, I think it has been a great year with many great stories and my disappointment will be short lived.
What’s up Braves fans? I had get on here and throw a shout out of congratulations to your boys for sealing the deal tonight. Very cool way to do it too. Not that he’s alone there. So you guys can exhale for a week or so now.
I’d like to see them win it all, for Chip since this is his last year, BUT I also know, they couldn’t get it done for Bobby Cox, in his last year….so time will tell, I guess.

The Angels’ “preference” is to decline their club options on Dan Haren and Ervin Santana in order to pursue a long-term extension with Zack Greinke, a source tells MLB.com’s Alden Gonzalez. The team would only look to bring back Haren or Santana if Greinke signed elsewhere, Gonzalez believes.
Haren ($15.5MM option, $3.5MM buyout) and Santana ($13MM option, $1MM buyout) both went from being likely pickup candidates to possibly expendable after their disappointing 2012 campaigns. Both men have shown better recent form, however, which could be a sign that their struggles were temporary — Haren has a 2.45 ERA over his last six starts, Santana a 2.49 ERA over his last seven.
If the Angels did decline their options, Haren and Santana would become two of the most sought-after arms on the market this winter. Haren just turned 32 but has been one of the game’s better pitchers for the last several years, while Santana was very good in 2010-11, has thrown at least 175 innings in four of the last five years and may still be somewhat of a breakout candidate going into his age-30 season.
The Angels have Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson and presumably Garrett Richards (who will have to replace someone) in place for next year’s starting rotation. If Greinke is re-signed, that would leave the fifth starter’s job open to such current in-house options as Barry Enright or Jerome Williams, though the Halos could also pursue add veteran depth this winter.
I really really hope that the Angels don’t do that. Maybe a WS title will help our cause. Heck, maybe the fact that we made the playoffs and the Angels likely won’t helps. At worst, there will be 2 sought after pitchers on the market. I’d rather have Haren. Santana is a bit inconsistent.
If we sweep the Marlins and Philly sweeps the Nats, there will be some very serious pucker factor going on in DC. Possible? Well, their collapse would be nothing compared to us last year.
At a minimum, if we keep pressure on them, they won’t be able to rest people.
What a fun night! Obviously, we all know the Braves clinched a playoff spot with their win. And they moved a little closer to Washington. Still a long ways to go for that, and it’s still a long shot.
The next item on the agenda is clinching the #1 wild card spot, and home field in the wild card playoff game. I’ve seen multiple people, including media members, say the magic number to clinch that is 3. That is incorrect. The Braves only need to clinch a tie with St. Louis, since they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. The magic number is 2.
Here are the updated magic numbers from around baseball.
NL East – Washington – 5
NL Central – Cincinnati – clinched
NL West – San Francisco – clinched
NL Playoffs (relative to Milwaukee/Los Angeles)
Washington – clinched
Cincinnati – clinched
San Francisco – clinched
Atlanta – clinched
St. Louis – 4
NL #1 seed – Washington – 8 (hold tiebreaker with Cincinnati)
NL #1 wild card – Atlanta – 2
AL East – New York – 7
AL Central – Chicago/Detroit – 9
AL West – Texas – 5
AL Playoffs (relative to Los Angeles)
Texas – 3
New York – 5
Baltimore – 6
Oakland – 7
Chicago/Detroit – 9 (for division)
AL #1 seed – Texas – 7 (relative to New York)
AL #1 wild card – Baltimore – 8 (relative to Oakland)
The only clinching that can happen today is, once again, for the Braves. With a win and a Cardinals loss, they will have clinched the #1 wild card playoff berth, and home field for the playoff game.
What happens if the Braves and Nats end the season tied for 1st place? Would they have a playoff game? Or would it go to the head-to-head winner (Nats)?
What happens if the Braves and Nats end the season tied for 1st place? Would they have a playoff game? Or would it go to the head-to-head winner (Nats)?
They would play a 163rd game on Thursday, in Washington. The winner would go the NLDS. The loser would play the following day in the 1-game wild card playoff.
jeffrey d, I’d think it would be Hudson. If they win, Medlen would start Game 1 of the NLDS. If they lose, Medlen would get the wild card game, and Mike Minor would probably get the Game 1 nod.
Heading to the last two regular season games in Pitts next week. Hoping I have a chance to see us clinch the Division… fingers crossed, come on Phillies!
I know that there were some here last night who thought clinching a mere invite to the play-in game was no cause to celebrate. I might even agree with that. But the celebration last night wasn’t even about the wild card, or the playoffs, even. It was about exorcising the demon of last year, putting a bullet in the head of that Walking Dead, burning the corpse, and scattering the ashes.
The wheel of karma turned, it stopped on the slot marked “Freddie Freeman”, and the baseball gods changed the label to “Redemption”. Fans ought to be able to see the real reason for the celebration, is what I’m saying.
By the way, I called the walk-off before the 9th, almost to perfection. I’m actually glad Freeman hit it to CF instead of RF, like I thought he would. That’s the only thing that kept it from being just too spooky.
@UK some people just want to complain no matter what. I have said several times, if the Braves win the World Series in let’s say 7 games, they will be the first ones complaining that it took 7 games or that “its only their 2nd WS.” You really can’t fix stupid.
We could be facing an interesting situation should we be close to the Nationals. Do you save Medlen and Hudson for the one game playoff or do you use Medlen and Hudson during the last few games of the season and settin them up aganist the Nationals?
Although very unlikely we catch the Nationals but it is still something to think about.
It could backfire if we fail to catch the Nationals or lose to them in the one game playoff.
I just wish we could have skipped Hanson and gone with a 4 men rotation.
If we are 3 games back with 7 to go then I don’t see any reason for Hanson to be starting
Veer, Hudson is scheduled to pitch Saturday, and Medlen on Sunday. They’re making those starts regardless of where the Braves are, I would think, at the very least to stay sharp. Minor, Hanson, and Maholm will start the three games in Pittsburgh.
So the answer to your question is that Medlen and Hudson wouldn’t be used in the last few days of the season anyway. And they will both be ready to pitch against Washington (Hudson) and the one-game playoff (Medlen).
Yes, I’m really glad that Freddie hit the walk-off. Would’ve been great to have Uggla on base, since you know, it was both of them that were involved in that heartbreaking DP last year, but it’s better for Freddie.
Let’s hope that this gets us on a hot streak. That’d be great news for the 1gm playoff.
Just wish the Phillies had the big 3 going aganist the Nationals in all 6 games. Clloyd dude eventually might gift wrap the division title to the Nationals. We got to keep winning every game.
Johnson and Niese are two of our toughest opponents from here on out. Although with Hanson scheduled to start 2 games you just don’t know.
As I said in my earlier post if we are within 3 games by tomorrow then the bullpen should be warming up from the first inning.
For me, it was both making the post season and burying 2011.
Congrats to Wren, team execs, Fredi and the Braves. The Red Sox had a comparable collapse last season and look how poorly that franchise handled it. Nothing of the sort from the Braves.
There’s still an outside chance for the Braves to take the division, and they haven’t locked up home field advantage for the WC. The Braves need to continue to hit the peddle and go all out in the remaining games – or until matters are decided.
I’ve read the blog for years (from way back in the good old days when the blog was so full of fun, good baseball insight and toes were frequently and hilariously discussed) but never posted before, but I had to just say to ncscoots- EXACTLY. That was perfectly stated!
I heard one of the Nats announcers say last night that the fact that the Braves were celebrating told him that they didn’t believe they could win the division. I thought “no way- this is about celebrating redemption after last year.” I’m sure the Red Sox wish they could do the same.
Never saw so many people unhappy and seemingly bummed after a game that should have done nothing but bring them joy. I guess it must have to do with shrt circuits to the brain’s pleasure centers. Maybe electroshock therapy would help?
I just wish Minor was pitching on a 3 days rest on Thursday instead of Hanson. Minor starts Thursday and then Tuesday. I just have a gut feeling that we will miss the division by 1 game and that crucial loss will come at the hands of Tommy Hanson. Fredi has made some good moves lately I just wish some how he skips Hanson.
Veer, if you don’t want Hanson to start, it would make much more sense to start Delgado than to put everyone on 3 days rest the week before the postseason!
Tuned in to hear winning call on 680 this morning at 6:25 am. Not one mention of the word ‘Braves’ by 6:45 am and gave up. Came here to see what DOB may have, thoughts on celebration. DOB is off, of course. Blog titled “Braves could clinch to start Chipper’s last homestand.” Am I seriously the only constantly disappointed by local media? Maybe I am.
Keep the petal to the metal tonight BRAVOS. We’re 7-0 toward that 12-0 sweep of the FISH and METS. Seal the deal.
Let’s have a MAHOLM resurrection for five shutout innings, and an effective C-MART sighting for three while getting into cruz’-control on the home stand.
We COULD come out the other end with a tie or only one back for the pennant between the NATS and ur’ us.
Go deep tonight CHIPPER. Go get ‘un guys. This thing is there for the taking. DOGGIE II has shown us the way.
I heard one of the Nats announcers say last night that the fact that the Braves were celebrating told him that they didn’t believe they could win the division.
Whistling past the graveyard. Nats are 4-7 in their last 11 and have lost 4.5 games of their lead in that span. The players might not be nervous, but I’d bet that there are plenty who are.
Perfection. That was last night. Medlen’s streak remains alive. Chipper is assured bookend post-season appearances for his Hall of Fame career. Freddie Freeman gets his first walk off HR to make it all happen.
Whistling past the graveyard. Nats are 4-7 in their last 11 and have lost 4.5 games of their lead in that span. The players might not be nervous, but I’d bet that there are plenty who are.
Wouldn’t it be beautiful if the Nats choked? Then DC fans would have the Redskins. The Skins don’t choke; they just stink.
HANSON might redeem himself, but I doubt it……only because HE does. He’s got the goods, but his head is in the way.
If you’re reading TOM, the operative word here is ‘you.’ If ‘you’ think you can be outstanding, ‘you’ will. No need blaming ML baseball and it’s system for the way you’ve been treated, your coaches, your childhood, your mother.
It’s all ‘YOU.’ That’s the only thing standing in your way to success.
Whistling past the graveyard. Nats are 4-7 in their last 11 and have lost 4.5 games of their lead in that span. The players might not be nervous, but I’d bet that there are plenty who are.
Didn’t the Nats celebrate when they clinched a play-off berth?
Great win last night. I’m not gonna lie, I almost felt like it was going to happen in some way. Just sorta felt like we weren’t going to lose that game. Happy for all of the Braves players, especially after what happened last year. Did feel weird to celebrate off winning, ya know, 2nd place – but after last year, I’m sure the guys are happy. Let’s just make sure we clinch home field for the coin flip game. Any advantage we can get.
Zack Greinke’s last 7 starts with the Angels when his team desperately needed him to perform: 50 IP, 36 hits, 9 ER, 11 BB’s, 47 K’s, 1.62 ERA, .200/.244/.322 oppo.
The Angels’ preference, I’m told, is still to resign Greinke. A source familiar with the team’s thinking told me recently that he expects the Angels to cut ties with both Santana and Haren this offseason and focus their efforts on signing him to a multi-year extension. So, I expect the Angels to decline their team options on Santana ($13 million) and Haren ($15.5 million) during the exclusive negotiating window and go hard after Greinke (six years, $125 million is the price tag many have associated with him). But if they can’t resign him, perhaps then — and only then, in my mind — they try to bring back Haren and/or Santana.
I’d say that’s about right. Six years, 126 million – 21 million AAV.
Can’t believe the Pirates are going to finish under .500 again. Really thought this year they’d have a winning mark. They need to get there before Monday or they’re doomed.
He’s been great. Their ‘pen and offense haven’t. Dunno if you saw Efrim, but there’s a story above which states that if the Angels re-sign Greinke, they’re likely to let Haren and Santana go.
Guess you did! His price isn’t getting any cheaper, unfortunately. It’ll probably take 17-18mil to get him to ATL, and even then he might be taking a pay cut from what he might make elsewhere. I just hope we don’t overpay for Shields. Don’t get Santana. Haren might be okay, but he is 32…

He’s managed to learn from his bullpen overuse last year
2011 – Extra inning games (26). Extra inning games 1st half (18). 1 run games (55)
2012 – Extra inning games (11). Extra inning games 1st half (4). 1 run games (36)
Maybe, he learned not to have extra innings. Particularly, in the 1st half.

What a fun night! Obviously, we all know the Braves clinched a playoff spot with their win. And they moved a little closer to Washington. Still a long ways to go for that, and it’s still a long shot.
The next item on the agenda is clinching the #1 wild card spot, and home field in the wild card playoff game. I’ve seen multiple people, including media members, say the magic number to clinch that is 3. That is incorrect. The Braves only need to clinch a tie with St. Louis, since they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. The magic number is 2.
Here are the updated magic numbers from around baseball.
NL East – Washington – 5
NL Central – Cincinnati – clinched
NL West – San Francisco – clinched
NL Playoffs (relative to Milwaukee/Los Angeles)
Washington – clinched
Cincinnati – clinched
San Francisco – clinched
Atlanta – clinched
St. Louis – 4
NL #1 seed – Washington – 8 (hold tiebreaker with Cincinnati)
NL #1 wild card – Atlanta – 2
AL East – New York – 7
AL Central – Chicago/Detroit – 9
AL West – Texas – 5
AL Playoffs (relative to Los Angeles)
Texas – 3
New York – 5
Baltimore – 6
Oakland – 7
Chicago/Detroit – 9 (for division)
AL #1 seed – Texas – 7 (relative to New York)
AL #1 wild card – Baltimore – 8 (relative to Oakland)
The only clinching that can happen today is, once again, for the Braves. With a win and a Cardinals loss, they will have clinched the #1 wild card playoff berth, and home field for the playoff game.

They would play a 163rd game on Thursday, in Washington. The winner would go the NLDS. The loser would play the following day in the 1-game wild card playoff.
