Well I guess if the Nats clinch before Wednesday, he’ll be on long rest for the nlds either way. Hope he doesn’t have one of those rusty early inning battles that he’s been known to have.
This doesn’t exactly scream consistency or confidence. Your truly most reliable starters right now are Medlen and Minor. Hudson has been unconsistent as well has Maholm. Hanson, well we all know what we’re working with here barring an improvement over the offseason, which is possible but shouldn’t be depended on.
I’m guessing Hanson isn’t a Brave in 2013. Delgado gets his slot. Beachy returns mid-season, and, yes, can’t count on him for much at this point.
But inconsistency by Medlen, Minor, Hudson? Some (Minor and Hudson), but not every start is going to be a quality start, and I think these three make for a solid nucleus in ‘13. And I don’t think Minor’s been inconsistent for a while.
Is a pretty nice rotation. Surely one of Delgado/Teheran will be ready by next year right? That or I’m giving up completely and never listening to prospect talk again. Maybe the addition of a 4th or 5th starter.
I hate statements like this… quantity does not always translate to quality. Sure we have options in the minors but they are prospects with little to none experience above AAA.
Brandon Beachy has 41 career starts and Medlen has 29. Minor has 52, but I doubt anyone thinks of him as a #1-2. We need to add someone to the top of that rotation who has more experience. Greinke, Shields, Haren, etc.
I just don’t think you give a guy THAT kind of $$$ who is on the wrong side of 30 on his next contract to be a leadoff hitter that K’s THAT much who once again is on the wrong side of 30 when his plus attribute is his speed which we all know decreases as you age….
At this point, there’s only going to be one slot open for a “prospect” if that’s what you consider Delgado. He did, after all, have a fairly good stint with the Braves’ this season. Unless Wren deals Delgado, I think he gets a shot to replace Hanson.
No real guarantee on Maholm, either. Pick up the option, sure, but I could see a scenario in which they acquire a top starter, trade Hanson and Maholm, and put Teheran at 5. Something like that. I know they love their lefties, though.
Just looking at the playoff teams’ rosters. The Reds’ pitching staff has been remarkably healthy and consistent this year.
. They have only used 17 pitchers all year.
. Their primary 12-man pitching staff for almost all of the year has pitched 97.3% of their innings, with almost all of the rest going to trade deadline acquisition Jonathan Broxton (20 innings).
. Their original starting 5 has made every start of the season except one, which was made by Todd Redmond.
Depending on if they start Arroyo twice more this season (he has 191 IP), the Reds have a shot at having four pitchers with 200 or more innings pitched. They would be the first team to do that since the White Sox did it in 2005 and 2006.
Innings pitched by their starters:
Cueto – 210
Latos – 197.1
Bailey – 195
Arroyo – 191
Leake – 173
Is a pretty nice rotation. Surely one of Delgado/Teheran will be ready by next year right? That or I’m giving up completely and never listening to prospect talk again.
Hah! It is a little disappointing that it’s been 2 years and neither are in the rotation, and it might reach 3! They’ll get here soon enough. Though Delgado’s fate is sealed, I bet. He’ll be traded for some OF this winter.
I’m having a hard time picturing Teheran starting in AAA for a 3rd consecutive year next season. On the flip side, I’m also having a hard time picturing the Braves turning down either Hudson or Maholm’s contract extensions. So… seems like the obvious moves are:
Non-tender JJ
Trade Hanson
Trade Delgado
I know people are calling for a front-line starter, but who gets kicked from the rotation if they do? Say they get Haren… that would give you a rotation of:
Hudson
Medlen
Haren
Maholm
Minor
Pretty solid, but again, does that mean a 3rd year of Teheran in AAA? If they don’t pick up a guy like Haren, then they’ve got:
Hudson
Medlen
Maholm
Minor
Teheran
Still pretty solid if Teheran lives up to even just a little bit of his pre-2012 hype. Don’t forget we’ve got Beachy coming back in August or September as well.
Gonna be an interesting offseason to say the least.
The Giants are similar to the Reds in that their 5 starters have started every game this season but two. They’ve shuffled their bullpen arms a good bit more than Cincinnati.
Brandon Beachy has 41 career starts and Medlen has 29. Minor has 52, but I doubt anyone thinks of him as a #1-2. We need to add someone to the top of that rotation who has more experience. Greinke, Shields, Haren, etc.
Hudson’s the old pro of the lot, huh? I’m not uncomfortable with Medlen, Minor, and Hudson leading the staff next season. I’m assuming, too, that Minor and Medlen only get better (well, how much better can Medlen get?!). And Delgado is about due for his shot at a place in the rotation.
No real guarantee on Maholm, either. Pick up the option, sure, but I could see a scenario in which they acquire a top starter, trade Hanson and Maholm, and put Teheran at 5. Something like that. I know they love their lefties, though.
Your going to get beat up for stating this but this won’t surprise me.

Could happen, but I doubt it. We traded Viz for him, and I doubt we can get that type of return if we traded him this offseason. Might happen if we signed Greinke…. (though it wouldn’t be necessary)
No real guarantee on Maholm, either. Pick up the option, sure, but I could see a scenario in which they acquire a top starter, trade Hanson and Maholm, and put Teheran at 5. Something like that. I know they love their lefties, though.
I have a hard time seeing them trading Maholm with the affordable 6.5 million. But, as you said, trading both Maholm and Hanson frees up around 10 million and if they want to give Teheran the #5 job then that’s probably the only way it’s going to happen barring injury.
Murph, if we were to sign Haren in the offseason. I’d look to move Maholm and set the rotation up like this..
Haren
Medlen
Hudson
Minor
Hanson
I’d be open to moving either Hanson or Delgado but we’d have to get something of quality in return. Maholm has no future past next season with the Braves so no reason not to shop him with our other options.
Why all of a sudden has Teheran jumped the line on Delgado when Randall has proven that not only is he more than serviceable at the big league level, but has outperformed Hanson in 2012….
All Teheran has proven is that he can give up bombs to MLB hitters in Spring Training….
Good morning all
What a ending to a great game. OH THAT FREDDY, WAY TO DO IT CHIPPER. MEDLEN hung in there and his streak still going. No colapse this year, now we need to get past that play-in game we should not even have to play. In my mind BRAVES ARE THE WC TEAM. aLets hope for a mirical so we can win division and not have to play that silly game.
Plus, if you throw Haren in there with Huddy and Hanson, you better go get some guys to run down the ball in the OF if we lose Bourn and move Prado into 3b
Plus, any mention of Hanson in the rotation over a much cheaper and better option in Delgado makes me want to reach through my PC and choke the life out of you AT
I’d be open to moving either Hanson…but we’d have to get something of quality in return.
Well then, I guess he’ll be a Braves next year. He’d be a decent 5, but we have other options who have done better. We kinda need a top SP and Delgado/Teheran need to step into the rotation. Don’t really see where Tommy fits in.
I swear, the Braves could be in the World Series, preparing for Game 7, and y’all would still be talking about the 2013 rotation.

Does anyone know about CHIPPER HARD COPY AJC TRIBUTE? I would think it would be in this comming Sundays paper, does anyone know for sure? I hope they sell AJC up here in NC, I am just across the border from Georgia.
How about we talk about Paul Maholm being great tonight and figuring out how to rattle the sticks enough to beat Josh Johnson
AND
Kyle Kendrick doing to the Nats what he does to the Braves and John Lannan picking up his 1st loss of the year and the Braves closing to 3 back w/ 7 to play.
“I can’t stomach any more talk about Bourn or the pursuit of a LF… again.”
Well you could talk to one of us about Greinke or another one of us about Jurrjens, or another one of us about velocity being the most important trait of a pitcher, or you could talk to one of us about using your closer in innings other than the 9th or a save situation. Oh and there are a few that would love to talk about all things Bobby Cox. Or if you get really bored there is a certain someone who would love to tell you all good things of Brian McCann.

Yup This whole page except for my post NOT A WORD ABOUT LAST NIGHTS GAME, it is kind of sad. BTW DOB missed a heck of a game.
Don’t mean to pour ice cold water (Deion) on the celebration, but just damn, they clinched the second spot on a do-or-die wildcard game. Man, take me back to the 90’s !! I guess the 91 team that went from worst to the seventh game of WS would have burned down FCS by making it to the WS.
Oh, I forgot, we had a bigger parade than the Twins

Last night means nothing. Nice to be back in the playoffs but I want to see a Braves team go deep into the postseason instead of one and out like previous years.
Fredi may get a handful of votes for MOY but I really think Davey Johnson will run away with it. I mean this is Washington’s 1st major league baseball playoff team since 1933 and since the name ” Washington Nationals” came into being in 2005 their record each season (excluding this season)has been as follows:
2005 81-81 last place
2006 71-91 last place
2007 73-89 4th place
2008 59-102 last place
2009 59-103 last place
2010 69-93 last place
2011 80-81 3rd place
It would be great to be the hot team as we enter the playoffs. Braves have a chance to end their final 30+ games with over 20 wins. (19-7 in Sept if we win the next 4).
The Cards finished 18-8 in September last year. We know how they finished the year.
Last night means nothing. Nice to be back in the playoffs but I want to see a Braves team go deep into the postseason instead of one and out like previous years.
“Last night means nothing.” Oh, really? Clinching a post season berth “means nothing.”
A team has to get into the post season to go deep into the post season. Or did I miss something?

Thinking about it, VJ, if you meant basically coming to ACE’s defense, i don’t think the guy meant any harm, and nor do most of the negative sorts….
*********
The demise of ACE is sad, he was nice to cabravesfan and did not see him really nasty with others.
It’s a little odd to see the Braves having success without Heap playing a bigger role in it. Hopefully they can manage him down the stretch, so as to be as healthy as he can be, and maybe get on an offensive roll.
McCann may not be getting a lot of big hits right now, but he’s still a big leader in the clubhouse, and still manages the games behind the plate. He may have more impact than meets the eye.

*******************************************************************
Poor McFann, it is a shame the season Heap has had we don’t see many posts from her anymore. I miss her.
equiring minds No doubt Hudson, Haren, Medlen, Minor, Maholm is a stronger staff, but it costs the team $11M/year to make that improvement.
Sorry, but unless we get a raise, that $11M has got to go to the outfield.
there are different ways to build a winning team. improveing run prevention is one way. i dont know how a 3 year $36mil contract costs the team $11mil per year, but it would be totally worth it. chipper’s 14mil, lowe’s 10mil, bournes 9mil, jurrjens 5mil hinske’s 1 mil, wilson’s 1 mil, durbin’s 1mil, ect….there will be plenty of money for a $12mil frontline starting pitcher.

I know some folk like every pitcher to be a power arm, but a pitcher like Maholm has his place, and I think he’s affordable and experienced.

Yup, I hope we keep drafting LHP’s that work in the 86-90 mph range.
You know what’s worse than soft-tossing lefties such as Maholm?
Former gas throwing, but now soft-tossing righties. Tommy Hanson comes to mind.

2009 59-103 last place

equiring minds No doubt Hudson, Haren, Medlen, Minor, Maholm is a stronger staff, but it costs the team $11M/year to make that improvement.
