Simmons likely to play Sunday; Hanson stays in rotation

PHILADELPHIA – Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said there’s a good chance that shortstop Andrelton Simmons will return to the lineup on Sunday. And yes, he’s been saying that for a few days now.

Simmons has missed four games since straining his left (non-throwing) shoulder while making a diving defensive play Monday at Miami.

“Bubba [head trainer Jeff Porter] wants to give him one more day,” Gonzalez said after posting a Simmons-less lineup Saturday. “But [Porter] was encouraged. He told me the rotator cuff is not firing just yet, and if he dives again and that’s not firing, he couldn’t protect [the shoulder]. It’s getting close, but he wants to give it one more day.”

The Braves are off Monday, and Gonzalez said he wants to see Simmons play Sunday and see where he’s at. Simmons was out nearly two months with a broken right hand, and has missed five of 11 games since returning from the disabled list, including one game (Sept. 12) after turning an ankle.

There are 10 games left on their schedule, which Gonzalez thinks is sufficient time for Simmons to get his overall game back up to speed.

“I would like to see him play [Sunday], then we have Monday off and see where we’re at after that,” he said.

Versatile left fielder Martin Prado has filled in at shortstop for the Braves, who lost backup shortstop Paul Janish to a dislocated his left shoulder Tuesday. It’s uncertain if Janish will play again this season even if the Braves advance deep into the postseason.

“There’s an outside chance that in 2-1/2 to three weeks we may get him back,” Gonzalez said Saturday.

Etc.

Tommy Hanson will stay in the the rotation and make his next scheduled turn Thursday against Miami, Gonzalez said. The right-hander gave up three homers and five runs in Friday’s 6-2 loss to the Phillies, and he is 0-4 with a 5.06 ERA in his past seven starts…. The Braves have no plans to start Ben Sheets, Randall Delgado or Julio Teheran in the last 10 games of the season, but Gonzalez said that could change if they decide to give Tim Hudson some rest and possibly skip his last start before the postseason. Sheets, Delgado and Teheran have all been in the Braves bullpen this month, but none have made a relief appearance. Third baseman Chipper Jones will probably have a rest day Sunday, and catcher Brian McCann might also.

@David Obrian now why in the world aren’t the braves starting anybody but hansan? He obviously doesn’t have it this year why not give those other 3 a chance to prove themselves for possibly next year?

Hanson is this year’s Lowe. Fredi will keep using him. If they make it past the wild card, he will use him. I would rather see Hudson/Medlen, Minor, and Maholm/Sheets (if he’s good to go) in the LDS.

I cringe when they hand Hanson the baseball, and the Braves’ body language seems to suggest they feel the same way behind him. Pity that our Young Guns (and Sheets) are too out of rhythm to plug them back into the rotation at this stage of the season.

You don’t use a 5 man rotation in the playoffs, so Hanson will most definitely be the odd man out.

There is no logical reason to keep starting Hanson. Is he Fredi’s son?

JNick is right people! Its only one more start for Hanson and he is pretty much done for the season. In the playoffs, its usually a three man rotation. I rather see Sheets give it a go one last time because he still throws harder than anyone in our staff, but Hanson is done for the season. We pretty much already cliched a one game wild card. Medlen, Hudson, and Minor should start in the post season. The game I am most worried about is that one game playoff.

Look at Hanson, Ugglier and Fredi, obviously Ugglier is Fredi’s illegitimate son and Hansom only gives him backrubs. There is no sane reason to keep starting Hanson which is why Fredi will keep running him out there.

Hmmm….

Well, I guess that gives us bloggers something to complain about! I would like to see Tommy break his winless streak, but it is very frustrating for me to see Fredi keep sending him out there. Next season is still something worth evaluating during these next two weeks and sending Delgado or Teheran out there gives the Braves a chance to evaluate their promise for next season. If they blew up, then you still have Sheets or Hanson to go in for long relief.

Yeah, if a player doesn’t collect a hit in every game, he should be tied to a stake and shot at dawn!

Some of the trolls here post the stupidest of comments!

Uggla did reach base courtesy a walk and the Braves scored 8 runs.

I am glad to hear that Hanson is still in the rotation. It is hard to find a pitcher that can give you 5 innings each night with only 5 earned runs. Those type pitchers are hard to find.

Screw Tommy Hanson. The guy is a joke of a pitcher. He should be gone next season, it seems like he has given up at least 1 HR in every game he has pitched this season. I wish the Braves would just dump his ass already, so sick of watching him pitch every 5 days with that stupid ass delivery of his, and those batting practice pitches that a little league player could crush.

It’s beginning to look like Fruti is going to go with Hudson in the 1 game playoff, he’s such an idiot although I would expect Wren will have the final say about that

FG may leave him in the rotation, but he would be INSANE to put him in the postseason rotation. If we advance to the NLDS. It needs to be Hudson, Minor, Medlen, Mahlom. Four man, no B.S. I hope Paul can get back to how he was earlier. His last start was very good, and hopefully a sign of things to come. If Maholm and Hudson can regain their form a bit, that’s a nice four man set. The only way Tommy Hanson actually starts a post season game is if Maholm, Hudson, Minor, Sheets, Delgado, Tehran and Medlen spontaneously combust.

And if that happens I’d rather Juan Francisco or Pastornicky pitch.

I do feel for Tommy, I know he’s trying, but he’s just lost whatever stuff he used to have. I’m being way too harsh on him as we all are, but his performance simply isn’t up to par at all. And this has been going on for far too long.

Yeah, he’s back already, back to the first of the year, Last Year! He really sucks!!!!!

Hanson needs to start next season at AAA, for the past two years his second half pitching has been miserable not to mention holding base runners, he really seems to be backing up instead of going forward and the Braves have to many good young arms on the cusp.

So you bench Uggla and claim you have changed since last season and won’t stick with guys too long and hurt the team. Hanson however gets to blow game after game?

Seems like we would want to get some of those other pitchers some work, and Hanson is not cutting it. Why else do we have them on the roster?

Seems like Fredi would get the message after awhile that the other players on the team are as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs every time Hanson goes to the mound. It just isn’t good for team morale to keep sending a pitcher out who almost gurantees a loss every five days. How does that build up team spirit and confidence? Guess Fredi has a routine and can’t seem to bring himself to change it. Same with Uggla. How can Fredi keep sending him out with his .213 batting average to kill rallies day after day? Easy. A mindset that simply can’t compute the importance of improvising when things aren’t working. Seems to me the Braves should just program a robot to manage the team and save the salary of the manager. Seems like the results would be about the same.

I disagree with you 64 year Ct. Braves fan. But with only 1 person. Hinske I would give Hinske a C. He was pretty good at the beginning of the season, but I would trust him, above Overbay, Jurrjens and the other you have listed in the F range and at times over Uggla and McCann in the D range (when they were going bad, that is). Just my opinion…

Homer Hanson needs to shut it down and get ready for some intense retooling in the spring. He has lost whatever was working for him in the past, mainly the 94 mph heater he once had.

Bravo Offense keep the same approach against Lee. He’s been our achillies heel the last few outings against us. Junk, offspeed breaking stuff that has good movement, but might cut a fastball in there from time to time to keep us honest. Do him as you have “Gio”, & Halladay, work the count, don’t give in to him, make him give in to you. Battle, stay alive w/ 2 strikes, that frustrates pitchers. But Lee is also pretty crafty himself, let’s see if we can get a lead early again. Prep up mentally for offspeed.
