Whoops, and I forgot the ERAs for Minor and Medlen…. Minor’s ERA is 1.09, Medlen’s is 0.90.
With that in mind, I’d seriously consider Minor game 1 of the NLDS. Better to get 2 starts from him if necessary in that series.

Another TD for the good guys — I like it that our boys went out and just asserted themselves and just flat out beat them.
And they took over aganst Mizzou in the second half — so they have played 2 good games in the confrence.
Now, lets see when the schedule gets tougher. So far so good.

Rosenthal’s Full Count: Greinke, Dodgers, Pirates
By Mike Axisa [September 22, 2012 at 8:52pm CST]
Here’s the latest from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, via his Full Count video…
The Dodgers did not try to acquire Zack Greinke before the trade deadline, but expect them to pursue him as a free agent this winter. They won’t shy away from the best starter available despite concerns about his ability to pitch in a big market.
The Brewers spent roughly $180MM less on Aramis Ramirez than the Tigers spent on Prince Fielder, but Ramirez has provided similar production. The 34-year-old is hitting .299/.363/.536 with 25 homers and an NL-best 47 doubles.
Few in baseball will be surprised if changes are made to the Pirates front office given the club’s second half slide and recent reports of Navy SEALS type training for their top prospects.
The Braves tried to acquire Greg Dobbs at the deadline, but the Marlins declined because they felt his presence was too important to the clubhouse. That was after the Hanley Ramirez trade, suggesting that other clubhouse issues exist.

Prior to the 1972 basketball season, the Hawks signed Dr.J, Julius Erving to a contract and he played several exhibition games as a Hawk and with Pistol Pete Maravich in the back court. I saw one of those games at the Omni and it was showtime all night long and I was super hyped for the upcoming season with this tandem to finally lead the Hawks out of the wilderness.
But, there was some hanky panky by Erving’s agent and the NBA voided his NBA contract and returned him to the Virgina Squires of the ABA.
I have always wondered how the Hawks history would have changed with these 2 players together for several years. Pistol Pete was the most entertaining player I ever saw and Dr. J wasn’t far behind him. I will never forget the first time I saw Dr. J go flying from the free throw line for a slam dunk…I said “That’s impossible” and so was some of Pete’s passes and ball handling skills.

It is kind of funny about Mejia. He is now just a bit old for AAA, so he is not really still a big prospect. They never bothered to put him on the 40 man roster, perhaps because of salary issues. Perhaps they are not sold on him just yet he has been down there a pretty long time.
I am not certain about his minor league free agent status.

Back to the subject matter, I love the decision to have Medlen for the Wild Card game and I’ll tell you why.
1. The obvious reason is that Medlen is the hottest pitcher in the game right now, that trumps Huddy’s experience.
2. Even by using Medlen on Friday the 5th, he could be used as early as Game 3 of the DS which would be on Wednesday the 10th. Also…gotta remember that the first two games of the DS would be in Atlanta, I think that is a huge advantage to the Wild Card team (regardless of who it is)
I l personally lpke my chances of winning games 1 and 2 in Atlanta and then Medlen would take that first game in Washington.

It occurred to me seeing the Giants and Reds celebrate their second division titles in three years, since the Braves last won a playoff series:
The Marlins won a World Series
The Mets won a division title
The Phillies won five consecutive division titles, two penants and a World Series
and in 2012, the Nationals are the best team in baseball after averaging 72 wins for a decade.
Okay, that last part didn’t just occur to me. Had to do a little background to come up with that.
There’s no traffic on the extra mile, folks.
Other teams with multiple division titles in the past, say, seven years:
Cubs
Dodgers
Diamondbacks
Cardinals
Rays
Angels
Rangers
Twins
At least if we win the wild card game we’re guaranteed of not losing at home in the first round.
So that’s something.
Dan_in_NC

The reason I find it favorable is that Huddy and particularly Minor would be pitching at Turner Field. I think Minor is going to get the nod over Maholm and would feel more confident of him at home rather than pitching on the road.
Even if its a split, I still think we’re in good shape and can win the series…but you gotta admit if we can just hold serve at home, Washington then has to run the table and win 3 in 3 days…against our top 3 arms. That’s the big difference between the 2-3 format and the 2-2-1 format

yes, but the 2-3 is an advantage for the away team as opposed to 2-2-1 which is an advantage for the home team.
Anything can happen of course, but I think it is stacked against us, just like having 2 WCs is more concerning than automatically getting in.
It seems to me that we mixed up our last two years .Last year an extra WC slot would have been sweet, this year not so much

Starting pitching always wins the titles and If I am the Braves I would use all the money saved this season from Jones Lowe and Bourn and spend it on Grienke. You can win the championship with pathetic offense and good pitching but not with good offense and medium pitching.
Rotation of Medlen Grienke Hudson Minor Beachy can shut any team down. Do you really need to replace Chipper and Bourn? You just need 1 run when those guys are pitching.

Right now, Minor is set to pitch the final game of the reg season, Oct. 3 in Pittsburgh. If he were to start game 1 of the NLDS, which is on Oct.7, he’d be doing it on 3 days rest.
I’d move him up this week, have him pitch on Thursday instead of Friday (which would give him 5 days of rest, not 6), meaning that he’d pitch Oct. 2nd. He’d then be ready to pitch Gm 1 of the NLDS on 5 days rest.

I think this is a solid argument, Brave New World. The point of developing talent (pitching talent, in particular) is to avoid budget-busting contracts. The key is to have a strong enough pipeline of talent to continue to replenish the major league club.
The Braves, not having the Yankees’ budget, let’s say, are following the right model: develop the talent and make smart, cost-effective acquisitions. The Braves also need to lockup some of their younger talent, per DOB’s suggestion a couple of days ago.
By the way, though Cliff Lee is making a boatload of money, he still is a darn talented pitcher.

Jeff, it would be good if you are right about today’s game, but the Braves only lit up one pitcher yesterday, one that pitched very poorly. After the 2nd inning, they only scored one run. Today they face a much greater challenge. The two guys that got 6 of the the RBI’s yesterday have a much rougher time against lefties… as does the team as a whole.
But this is a game that I would really like for them to win for that very reason. It would be good to see the team developing in that direction; being able to stand down lefties consistently. If the offense can really become consistently reliable and Hudson can get on top of his game, the Braves have a good chance to make their presence known in the playoffs.

Good to see a W yesterday and win today would be nice although not imperative. Still very uncomfortable about how this lineup is constucted but Bourn had a big game and hopefully he can swing the bat better. Chipper finally with his 1st double since who knows.
Freeman still struggling and needs some time off, he’s played a lot of games.
The day the Phillies are officially eliminated will be a happy day.

I get back to my point: How do you know how today’s lineup will perform? @Jeff
can you read? I already said that anything can happen. How hard is that to comprehend? It means that I don’t know what will happen. Nowhere did I ever say that they would win or lose this game
But starters are starters for a reason, so any time three of them are out at the same time it has got to lessen the odds.

“And given that the starters haven’t exactly, consistently been an offensive juggernaut, ”
That’s a understatement!

yeah I would say the odds are worse with this line up than if one or two more of those players were in there, but like you have both sad, it could still go either way

Nothing wrong with sitting half your starters at one time? Yeah, right.
If you check the records for some odd reason the “B” team usually does well. The Bench is loaded on these days.

You’re right. I can’t read. I’m dictating my responses.
Too many variables and X factors to know if sitting out three starters will result in a win or a loss. Given that the Braves’ starting offense hasn’t hit the ball off the cover much and racked up lots of runs, today’s lineup might do better – or it could do worse. That’s a fact.

are you one of the obsessive nuts around here? How many times do I have to say the same damn thing, including the first time before you even said anything? get it through you head, I DID NOT SAY THAT I KNEW WHAT WILL HAPPEN, I DID SAY THAT ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. but if you can not figure out that the odds are less when three starters sit then you need to spend some of that obsession on a stat course. Enough already, I am tired or repeating myself just to have you come back and reword the same thing that I just said

Love what Minor is doing of late but here is a fun fact. When Minor was picked at 7 in the 2009 draft Trout was still on the board.
Trout was not picked until 25 in the first round.
Given the Braves lack of OF talent (apart from Heyward at the time) in the minors Trout would have been quit the prize.
What is more vexing is how did that guy fall to 25? Tight budgets re: HS players and their hefty signing costs?
