I dunno, hopefully the illogical brain trust that is the Atlanta Braves that didn’t want to start Medlen EVER, and who wanted to give Martin Prado away for Seth Smith, would choose to bench Hanson after a good start. It could happen. Maybe build up his trade value.
Really he is just a nightmare to watch pitch. Slow delievery, can’t throw strikes, deep counts, stolen bases, predictable curveball homers. I suppose it is a blessing he only goes 5 innings, if he got all the way through the 6th I might go even more crazy.

Did y’all know that Tommy Hanson has a 2.05 ERA in 22 career innings in Philadelphia? Except for a rain-shorted 2-inning outing in 2009, he has gone, 6, 7, and 7 innings in the other three starts. His last start in Philadelphia, in early July, was also the last time he pitched 7 innings.

You should really, really hope that there is never a period when Little Game loses his command for a stretch
Happened in his last start. He got to 3 balls on a couple of batters.
Completely out of no where.
Then right back on top of it once he got settled in and saw the hitters more. He’s like a fine wine. Gets better with time.

The Phillies are a hot team and they get to face Hanson? Oh brother. Remember how the past couple of seasons we would say, “Well, if the Braves could sweep the Phillies….?” It’s the other way now.
The Braves don’t have to sweep the Phillies, 2 out of 3 would be great, however even at this stage 1 out of 3 may be acceptable. Just don’t go down whimpering in all 3 games.

If we are basing our choices off of very recent performance, then there might be advantages for and against… I tend to look at the rotation and see a top fastball speed of 91 and figure, “doesn’t matter who pitches.”

John Smoltz has been arguing that the Braves should look at the big picture by bravely opting to send one of their other starting pitchers – Mike Minor, Paul Maholm or Tommy Hanson – to the mound for this one game.
Not Tommy. Maholm is iffy, I’d be okay with Mike. He’s been our 2nd best starter since July 1. It’s a very interesting idea, Fredi would be praised it if it works, hated if it doesn’t.

Up until now, I’ve been in agreement that our #1 need this offseason was a RH power LF. I’ve changed my mind. It’s now getting Hanson out the rotation (likely meaning off this team). And since he’s done well in Philly, we can trade him there. Maybe they’ll give us Ruf for him

It looks more and more like it will be the Cardinals in the playoff game, and they kill lefties. I would not put Minor or Maholm in there against them. If by some miracle the Dodgers wind up in that game…they struggle against southpaws even worse than the Braves. Hmm….

Yep, it is what I’ve been saying too. The 1-game playoff doesn’t mean anything if you can’t win the 5-game series. It’s a huge circular argument though.

The Wild Card game is an elimination game… the path to the World Series starts with this must-win game.
If you’re going to get beat and knocked out of the playoffs, then make them beat you at your best with your best pitcher (MEDLEN) on the mound.
Teams don’t get to the playoffs with only 1 good pitcher. A Hudson/Minor duo in those first two games is a good setup… then the team has Medlen, probably their most unflappable, unwaivering pitcher, taking the mound on the road in a possible series-clinching situation.
WC game – Medlen
Game 1 – Hudson
Game 2 – Minor
Game 3 – Medlen
Works for me.

As far as your intimation that this is a “freedom of speech” issue, I’d respectfully suggest that you educate yourself as to where freedom of speech extends and doesn’t.

I would not put Minor or Maholm in there against them.
Just checked, Minor’s had it rough against the Cards, 2 games, 9.1 IP, and a 9.31 ERA. 5 HR allowed… Beltran is 4-7 against him. Though, Minor is much better now… Still all for Meds pitching that game.

You are correct Murph, it’d be 4 days of rest for Meds. Play-in is Friday, NLDS starts for us on Sunday. Off day on Tuesday, Meds would be back to pitch on Wednesday.
MFin: 5th or 6th? It’s the playoffs, Hanson would have an ever shorter leash. Try the 4th!

Bat, I’m left handed,think Earl Anthony with a little less talent. I stood as far right as possible and still fighting to keep it on lane. On right lane snuck over a little bit into next guys lane and could keep it on lane a little better. A couple of times it looked like that John Elway throw when Deion was trying to cover. What a hook and a lot of fun.

Bat Masterson…..The Braves will have plenty of money to sign both Josh Hamilton and Cody Ross. Chipper’s $14 mil is coming off the books, Derek Lowe’s $10 mil (the Indians are paying $5 mil of Lowe’s $15 mil salary), Jair Jurrjens’ $5.5 mil coming off (he will surely be non-tendered).
That’s $34.5 mil in salary coming off the books. I’d rather pay Hamilton and Ross that kind of money….than the trio of Chipper, Lowe and Jurrjens.
That’s where the money is coming from. Hamilton and Ross would add some serious power to our line-up.

Brian from SC – that is an interesting take. I completely understand his logic behind his thoughts, but I don’t know if I totally agree. Unless by some fluke of fate the Braves win the division, they won’t be able to get to the division series without winning the coin flip game. If Hudson, Malholm, Minor, Hanson lose a division series game, that’s just one game. If they lose the WC game, then the season ends. As much as I would like to see Medlen start games 1 and 5, I still think he needs to be on the bump for the WC game. There won’t be a game 1 or 5 if the Braves don’t win that game.

You can’t bowl a 300 game without a strike in the first frame.
You can’t get to the Division Series by losing the WC game. That game is the most important game of the playoffs at the current time. Don’t try to set up the DS rotation before you get there.
