“Saw a lot of people beating their chest after Mike Minor’s performance in Arizona in April. Then he got destroyed. Seeing a lot more people reserved even after 3 months of great performance from Minor.”
Go back to 2010 when Mighty Mike threw a couple of good games in August. People piping in for him to start a playoff game back then on this blog. Funny stuff really.
Heyward has been valuable, Freeman has been valuable, O’Flaherty has been valuable, Paul Janish has been valuable.
Bourn has been disappointing second half of the season, just has. Others have been more consistent than Michael has for sure. Still our chances of succeeding in October have a lot to do with what Michael Bourn does.
Ok, new topic. I wasn’t here the other night, but was there a lot of talk about the stupidity of not pinch running for McCann in that final game against the Marlins? What in the world were they thinking not running for him with 2-outs in a 3-0 game?
Did they really not want to “ruin” the save situation or what?

“I personally don’t think the Nats sweep last weekend meant much of anything…”
Sure it did. It proved to the team that they can actually play with the best team in the NL (maybe the league) and win. I think that series could very well go a long way in helping this team’s confidence.
This team really has the ability to win the World Series. I’ve said that all year long and I truly believe it. The problem with baseball is that it is such a streaky sport and throw in a 1-game play-in game and the whole thing has been turned into a coin clip.
Completely agree. It’s so glaring that Wren needs to finally find a LF bat.
I guess it’s possible that they could see Upton as filling the RH bat and CF needs both, but based on what they have done in the past, I’d expect them to want a little more confidence in the player they get for the bat.
“Amazing how so many thought he was done after last season.”
Like the front office who was trying to give Martin Prado away for SETH SMITH. They were the idiots, most fans didn’t want Martin to go anywhere because of his versatility and value. And by the way I know there are people on here that used to believe that he can’t play short stop I really hope they have been watching him at SS lately because they guy looks like an ELITE defensive SS at times. It’s Prado, it’s what he does. Love the guy.
ncscoots, Efrim – I’m just not so sure there’s such a thing as a LF RH thump available anywhere. Looks to be a very rare commodity and the ones that are out there I can’t see going anywhere unless we’re willing to extremely overpay to bring Hamilton in.
But with that said, I’d be alright if we made some kind of run at Justin Upton this offseason. I don’t advise selling the farm to do it though but I also don’t think we’d have to go to that extreme.
As Dominating as Maddux was during the Regular season,For whatever reason he would have his slip ups in the post-season…Ditto for Glavine
One more reason to think I’m not missing anything by not listening, unless he said a lot more than that.
Just a quick glance at Maddux’s post season stats seems to tell me he pitched about 85% of a full seasons games in the playoffs, and posted close to his career numbers, all against pretty good to great teams. Without looking I’m betting the same goes for Glavine.
“If the Braves DIDN’T have the best closer in the league, maybe they would have pinch run for McCann to make the 4th run more likely.”
The 4th run would’ve scored if DAVID ROSS was running. Heck maybe even Freddie Freeman running. If it was Pastornicky he wouldn’t have even had to get water afterwards.
And that inning after botching that Kimbrel looked the worst he has looked all year long. No strikeouts in an inning, wowza, didn’t think that was possible. Yes, Kimbrel=great. He also has an outside shot, knock on wood, for a sub 1.00 ERA season.
Bob, there is help available for whatever it is ailing you. Medication. Counseling.
I didn’t screw up anything. I said you guys ran off ACE. It’s a general, kinda blanket statement that really didn’t mean anything much, and you’ve chosen to flip out and start in on me.
I don’t even know who you are, so the remark really wasn’t aimed at you, wise one.
And if you think you can outlast me, you’re delusional. Though morons, like you apparently are, do bore me at some point.
I could go along with Tori HUnter in LF (with Martin playing there occasionally), but Constanza/Reed Johnson in center? I shudder in horror if that’s the option.
I’d prefer someone like Pagan to that platoon and would like Johnson off the bench and maybe as part of a LF platoon (with Prado) and not platooning in CF – he’s a decent back up, but I would rather have better D in CF on a regular basis.
“If the Braves DIDN’T have the best closer in the league, maybe they would have pinch run for McCann to make the 4th run more likely.”
Not sure I agree. If game is in July play it out. September and have 3 catchers, pinch run the guy. By the time Johnson’s ball was in the hand of the thirdbaseman, other than Mac guy scoring is drinking water in the dugout looking for his glove and hat.
Well, Fredi probably would have pinch run for McCann if he KNEW someone was about to hit a double.
But, you don’t want to unnecessarily substitute, taking players off your bench (in this case, 2 players), unless you think it significantly increases your chance to win. The possibility (not guarantee) that pinch-running would help make it a 4-0 game as opposed to a 3-0 game isn’t a big leverage situation.
I guess it’s possible that they could see Upton as filling the RH bat and CF needs both, but based on what they have done in the past, I’d expect them to want a little more confidence in the player they get for the bat.
Yeah, I was just pointing out that he’s hit a lot of HR’s in the 2nd half. I don’t see him as an option, really. Although the money has to be spent somewhere. They aren’t going into 2013 with a 75 million dollar payroll.
It’s not a matter of whether or not it was any kind of leveraged situation or if it was unlikely another run would score. YOu have a catcher fighting a leg injury. YOu don’t make him stay on the basepaths – especially that late in the game when you have the aforementioned three catchers, Mac is unlikely to have another AB and you don’t need to concern yourself with a loss of defense by pinch running for him.
“Well, Fredi probably would have pinch run for McCann if he KNEW someone was about to hit a double.

Agree to disagree. 3 catchers regardless situation, should have pinched run. 3-0 is a nice lead and Kimbrel chances of holding are solid, but a 4th run if possible is nice. I recall Kimbrel having tying run at plate only the other day. Improbable but possible he blows a lead like that it. Mac is SLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.
It is, no question. I don’t know that they are gonna get some .900 beast or anything, but they need a guy who can at least punch out 20+ dingers. That would give them the balance and length that Chipper now provides.
There were plenty of periods during the year when these guys were just lethal 3-7, because a pitcher couldn’t pitch around enough of them. One more good righty bat with some sock could provide that same kind of performance.
Ludwick has a team option for next season at $5mil… with the season he’s had, and the low cost of picking up that option, gotta think that he’s not going to be available.
It is, no question. I don’t know that they are gonna get some .900 beast or anything, but they need a guy who can at least punch out 20+ dingers. That would give them the balance and length that Chipper now provides
Screams for, at the very least, a player like Cody Ross.
Does this LF bat have to be a righty? Alex Gordon and Shin-Soo-Choo are pretty good. If we could find any CF who hits right-handed and can give doubles power, maybe 10HR and get one the aforementioned LF’er, would that be okay? It’s gonna be hard to get Willingham.
Well, if you were ever really going to extend McCann. This would be the year, just give him a huge signing bonus up front this year and a lower yearly salary.. win..win..
Choo is going to cost, what, $6mil or so next season?
I’d give up Delgado to get him… and you all know how much I like Delgado. Choo is just a quality ballplayer, he’s young, decent in the OF… he’d be a great pickup.
“Sure would be nice to have a right-handed power hitter to balance out Freeman/Heyward/McCann.”
Agree with that. Doesn’t even have to be a power hitter. Once reason wouldn’t be all that disappointed letting Bourn walk. Too many lefties.
With that said, wish again Prado would bat in the 5th slot and move Chipper to 2. Chipper is a singles hitter these days. Love to see Martin have more opportunities to drive the ball into alleys again.
Sure would be nice to have a right-handed power hitter to balance out Freeman/Heyward/McCann.
I love the guy, but this makes me get frustrated with Uggla. He really needs to be that guy next year if this lineup is going to offset the loss of Chipper. Add a Josh Willingham or at the very least, Cody Ross, and we have a really, really deep offense.
Is Uggla capable of anything but the wild and unpredictable? It’s normally a good bet that he won’t produce, but the guy, in 2 seasons, has proven to be the last guy I really want to see up there, aside from the pitcher and, at times, Mac this season.
I can’t imagine he’ll give us a smooth ride in 2013….
You have a guy like Willingham, or even Uggla if he were right, hitting between Heyward and Freeman, and that would really create problems in late innings for a bullpen.
Bob, there is help available for whatever it is ailing you. Medication. Counseling. — phil @ 956
You see…? This is his answer or comeback for every time his BS is questioned. Absolutely useless!

“Flip out”??? I remember asking you a question about who you were talking about… Should I repeat your answer almost 2 hours later? It’s on the blog timeline for anyone to see…
I don’t even know who you are, so the remark really wasn’t aimed at you, wise one.
Oh, you don’t know me??? Well, that makes it all OK, then. I didn’t realize you knew all of the others on the blog. My apologies.
And if you think you can outlast me, you’re delusional. Though morons, like you apparently are, do bore me at some point.
“I got a dollar that says Uggla starts out hitting cleanup next year, regardless of any LF pickup. Assuming Fredo doesn’t go nuts and hit Heyward at 2.”
Reality is that our best hitting lineup this season was when Uggla and Mac batted either cleanup or 5th, Freddy at 3 slot and Chipper batting 6th. Big depth there and our linup was extremely consistent for a month or longer.
Chipper at 4 is a problem. Bat him behind Bourn and have Prado in a role to drive in runs. Right now, Prado does it all but this slap hitting to right to get on base isn’t pretty.

Some big-boy baseball coming up for them, though. I don’t have any problem seeing them finish up 5-8 or 4-9, even.
You’re persistent, I’ll give you that. 13 games left and you’re still calling for that one last chance of fade for the Nats.

Completely agree. It’s so glaring that Wren needs to finally find a LF bat.
I guess it’s possible that they could see Upton as filling the RH bat and CF needs both, but based on what they have done in the past, I’d expect them to want a little more confidence in the player they get for the bat.

Agree to disagree. 3 catchers regardless situation, should have pinched run. 3-0 is a nice lead and Kimbrel chances of holding are solid, but a 4th run if possible is nice.

Agree with that. Doesn’t even have to be a power hitter. Once reason wouldn’t be all that disappointed letting Bourn walk. Too many lefties.
