[Durham Bulls Manager, Leon] Roberts recalls a laughing moment with his No. 3 hitter.
“I gave him the green light on a 3-0 pitch and he didn’t know what to do,” the former Bulls manager said. “He didn’t move.”
The next day Roberts spoke with Jones about his hesitance at the plate, only to find out that Jones had been taught to never swing at a 3-0 pitch.
“He goes, ‘I’ve never swung at it my entire life,’ ” Roberts said, laughing at the memory. “That surprised the heck out of me, but other than that he was a real solid player.”
Cincinnati and Washington became the first teams to clinch a playoff spot yesterday. Here are the up-to-the-second magic numbers for each race:
NL East – Washington – 8
NL Central – Cincinnati – 2
NL West – San Francisco – 3
NL Playoffs (relative to Milwaukee, first team out)
Washington – clinched
Cincinnati – clinched
San Francisco – 3 (relative to Los Angeles for division)
Atlanta – 5
St. Louis – 11
AL East – New York – 13
AL Central – Chicago – 12
AL West – Texas – 10
AL Playoffs (relative to Los Angeles, first team out)
Texas – 5
New York – 8
Baltimore – 9
Oakland – 9
Chicago – 12 (relative to Detroit for division)
The only clinching that can happen today is in the NL Central, where the Reds will take the division crown with a win and a Cardinals loss.
On the other side of the coin, the Mets were eliminated from playoff contention with their 16-1 loss to Philadelphia last night. With the Reds’ win, the Brewers were eliminated from the NL Central race.
Here are the elimination numbers for the trailing teams:
NL Playoffs (relative to St. Louis, last team in)
San Diego – 5
Arizona – 8
Pittsburgh – 8
Philadelphia – 9
Los Angeles – 10
Milwaukee – 11
AL Playoffs (relative to Oakland/Baltimore, last teams in)
Kansas City – 1 (relative to Chicago in division)
Tampa Bay – 8
Los Angeles – 9
Detroit – 12 (relative to Chicago in division)
Kansas City would be eliminated with a loss OR a White Sox win. Arizona will be eliminated from the NL West race with a loss OR a Giants win. As I covered in the previous post, St. Louis would be eliminated from the NL Central race with a loss AND a Reds win.
Its Good we took 2 out of 3 in the 305, but Throttle Back Folks…This series against the Phillies is Huge, it will be a good evaluation of what this streaky ass offense will lookmlike against playoff pitching

So, the Angels and Rangers played yesterday, pitting a nice young Japanese star pitcher against we-know-who.
Both pitched well, going 8 innings. One allowed 4 Hits, 1 ER, 1BB, and K’d 9. The other allowed 5 Hits, 1 ER, and K’d 8.
Once again, the Angels shaky bullpen bites them as “Ernesto Frieri” allows 2 runs in the top of the 9th on a HR to lose the game for the Angels. The offense could muster nothing in the bottom of the 9th. 3-1 your score.
Having bad luck in Anaheim, they ain’t scoring runs for him, and the ‘pen is very shaky. Defense isn’t great either. Why would he stay there?

Just guessing, amigo. Too much data and too many variables to load into the computer – brain or mechanical – to know.
I’m gonna guess the Braves’ chance of winning the one-game elimination match is 93.7324%.
Some big-boy baseball coming up for them, though. I don’t have any problem seeing them finish up 5-8 or 4-9, even. Probably not enough losses, even with that, for the Braves. Dangit.
Yep. What about the Cards? They’re starting to get their act together.
The Braves’ magic number for clinching the FIRST wild card spot, and home field in the playoff game, is 6. Tie would go to the Braves since they won the season series with St. Louis.
Now that I think about it, though, Braves have gone 10-4 in their last 14, so maybe 10-2 in the last 12 isn’t so far-fetched. If they can’t win it with 96, then I’ll just have to be a cap-tippin’ fool and give the Nats credit.
Thats The Thing that was said on Sports radio yesterday, he’s due to have a Game where he is off — Tomahawkin
That’s true, T. I’m surprised he’s gone this long so flawlessly. If he has to have a game off, though, let’s hope it’s before the playoffs. He still has a couple of starts left.
“Reading that stuff will rot your brain, dude. Step…away.”
scoots is onto something.
Say, Tomahawkin, as I recall, didn’t you predict that the “Curly Ws” would roll the Braves in three straight? I can’t recall if you gave percentages on that happening, though.
Who, EXACTLY, are “you guys”? The only one I remember having words that would chase someone away was DOB. Since ACE was last here, there were only a few of us on the blog. richbrave, Ward, John Leonard & I certainly didn’t chase him away.
So, who the hell are you talking about, phil?
***********
A little sensitive, Bob?
I was speaking in general terms. Obviously I’m not talking about you, so why the defensive, angry reaction? “you guys” covers weeks, not just last night. Maybe he should be run off. But in general, the guy is just as harmless as the next one, and a LOT less snarky and angry than some around here.
“Say, Tomahawkin, as I recall, didn’t you predict that the “Curly Ws” would roll the Braves in three straight? I can’t recall if you gave percentages on that happening, though.”
Yeah, And I told everyone to “Bank on It!”…
They looked like Crap in that Milwaukee series before that, and plus there was no pressure, The Division race ended 2 weeks ago…
This is like Braves purgatory/death row. Wait around 2 weeks for a 1-game play-in game when you are better than the other team by 5+ games. Fun times in Bravo land.
Zack Greinke with another strong outing down the stretch for the Angels. High pressure situation, and Greinke delivers with another great outing – 8 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 0 BB’s 8 K’s.
I’d absolutely rather have Zack Greinke on this team next year instead of Michael Bourn – who by the way, has folded two consecutive years in the 2nd Half of the season.
If [Medlen] has to have a game off, though, let’s hope it’s before the playoffs.
Except Medlen hasn’t shown where he even has the potential to be off. He’d have to start missing location by two inches on more pitches than not, and his delivery looks too dialed in with repeatability for that to happen. In addition, because his arm slot and arm speed are so nearly identical on all three pitches, hitters might not even be able to square up on balls that catch too much of the plate, as long as he isn’t throwing to hitters’ counts too much.
No sane person thinks he’ll be able maintain some sub-1 ERA over a long period of time, but this isn’t a “long period of time” we’re talking about. Half-a-dozen starts or so through the playoffs. Not unreasonable to think he can maintain his so-far-superhuman performance for those. Pitchers have streaks of excellence like that, all the time.
“I’d absolutely rather have Zack Greinke on this team next year instead of Michael Bourn – who by the way, has folded two consecutive years in the 2nd Half of the season.”
I wouldn’t. Bourn is still the more valuable player than Greinke. And who cares if he folds in the 2nd half. He is the main reason we are currently up 6 games in the Wild Card.
“This is like Braves purgatory/death row. Wait around 2 weeks for a 1-game play-in game when you are better than the other team by 5+ games. Fun times in Bravo land.”
There are certain bloggers here that remind me of voters in certain European countries, who on election day vote for the communist candidate, then run to the nearest church and pray to God that he loses
I’d absolutely rather have Zack Greinke on this team next year instead of Michael Bourn – who by the way, has folded two consecutive years in the 2nd Half of the season.
Certainly, if that were the choice, agreed. But the Angels have the budget and the motivation to retain Greinke’s services. I see Greinke staying put in Anaheim. And at this point, Greinke is likely to command a higher dollar deal than Bourn, whose market value has had to have been hurt by his second half performance.
I wouldn’t. Bourn is still the more valuable player than Greinke. And who cares if he folds in the 2nd half. He is the main reason we are currently up 6 games in the Wild Card.
Because the 2nd half of games still count, and Bourn has been awful since mid-June?
And say what you want about the Angels players (Trout, Greinke, etc.) but Ernesto Frieri certainly owes that team something. He’s struggled mightily as of late, blowing 2 saves and then a chance at a win last night.
whose market value has had to have been hurt by his second half performance.
You would think, but I’m not so sure. GMs interested in the guy and with the wherewithal to pursue him aren’t going to think they’re buying his second half. If they did, they wouldn’t buy him at all. Buyers see the glam, not the warts.
Wins are wins. Not to mention if the both are equally crappy in playoffs games it is a wash. But at least one guy can still play great defense in playoffs and save runs that way.
I love it. Use WAR when it supports your arguement. Bash it when it doesn’t.
Michael Bourn is turning 30 years old in December and almost ALL of his value is dependent on his legs. Not exactly a smart call to extend a guy in his early 30’s who has worn down each of the last two years into the 2nd Half and his value is all in his legs.
scoots, given Boras’ magic, I’m sure Bourn will still command a substantial contract. But I do think the value of that contract will be less than what Bourn could have gotten had he had a better second half.
I think the Braves will look for someone other than Bourn to meet their CF needs and likely for less cost.
OPS 90+. If his value was solely based on that…but it isn’t. Defense, CFer, baserunning, leadoff hitter, ability to manufacture runs. Guy can affect a game in soo many ways.
OPS 90+. If his value was solely based on that…but it isn’t. Defense, CFer, baserunning, leadoff hitter, ability to manufacture runs. Guy can affect a game in soo many ways.
All based on his legs which deteriorate as a player gets older. Not smart to give him a boatload of money.
And I like Bourn for what he is, but Muffin Man logic is truly the worst.
You would think, but I’m not so sure. GMs interested in the guy and with the wherewithal to pursue him aren’t going to think they’re buying his second half. If they did, they wouldn’t buy him at all. Buyers see the glam, not the warts.
I get that. But if he kept going like he did in the first half, I think he’s getting six or seven years, 18-20 million per year. I don’t believe he’ll get that any longer….
“If they can’t win it with 96, then I’ll just have to be a cap-tippin’ fool and give the Nats credit.”
Might want to get a head start and do it now, clinch a spot for playoffs. Good for organization, their fans, and baseball overall. That’s a good team over there and have had a great season.
Harold Reynolds piping for Adam LaRoche as MVP in the NL. Please. Guy has had a really good season no doubt. Zimmerman is the leader on that team. That guy personifies their toughness.
I’m not too worried about the Greinke/Bourn debate. Neither is going to happen, no money for either of them. Ultimately, I’d rather have Bourn. I think our pitching with the addition of Beachy for the long term should be pretty solid.
This team has become a playoff team with him and because of him. He is slumping now and may be worn down, but that doesn’t discount what he did in the first half to get this team the lead it now has. And this whole team has been full of slumps for some reason. Although I’m not sure you can call Brian McCann or Dan Uggla in slumps. They’ve basically just sucked for the whole season, and have had positive “streaks”.
Whatever, Bob. I don’t know a thing about you anyway…carry on. — phil @ 9:13
OK, phillie… learn a little bit about “Bob”.
You said at 8:54:
A little sensitive, Bob?
I was speaking in general terms. Obviously I’m not talking about you, so why the defensive, angry reaction? “you guys” covers weeks, not just last night. — phil
You clearly came on the blog and said, at 6:58 am, page 14, “You guys have chased ACE away…..the poor guy wasn’t that bad.”
Being there were only a handful of “guys” on the blog since ACE was last on the blog, I said, at 7:07 am, “Who, EXACTLY, are “you guys”? The only one I remember having words that would chase someone away was DOB. Since ACE was last here, there were only a few of us on the blog. richbrave, Ward, John Leonard & I certainly didn’t chase him away.
So, who the hell are you talking about, phil?”
I thought it was a legitimate question, phil.
So, then you come on at 8:54, almost two freakin’ hours later to tell me, “you guys covers weeks”???? (and a bunch of other BS)
I think folks got caught up in 2 months of Bourn’s out of this world performance. Happens a lot here. Way too often.
Saw a lot of people beating their chest after Mike Minor’s performance in Arizona in April. Then he got destroyed. Seeing a lot more people reserved even after 3 months of great performance from Minor.
Best to relax and look at the big picture. Tough for some, though.
Nope, and Bourn isn’t staying here. And if he is we should all be happy because he took a major discount in order to do so. Probably 12-13 million a year, which he is EASILY worth that.
Now if Greinke wants to come to the Braves for 12-13 million a year, heck I’ll take them both.
“This team has become a playoff team with him and because of him”
Guy had a great first half and great defense all year no doubt. Team is a playoff team having solid starting pitching outside of a slow start, great closer, and Martin Prado doing it all among other things.
Big picture is that the Braves have the most valuable outfield in the NL and are a lock for the playoffs, in part due to Michael Bourn. The guy has been extremely valuable to the Braves this year, and unlike Dan Uggla and Brian McCann, had stretches where he was a phenomenal player.

This team has become a playoff team with him and because of him. He is slumping now and may be worn down, but that doesn’t discount what he did in the first half to get this team the lead it now has.
