The Mets must want to get a head start on their packing for the off-season. 8-0 in the first inning of a game that will eliminate them from the playoffs.

We got rid of cable for the summer and only recently got it hooked back up. I have no idea what the channels are anymore… the Time Warner channel lineup says they carry it, but I’m not sure if it’s on one of those $6.99/month tiers that I refuse to pay for

Geez, I thought we were on a good karma streak here on the blog. Guess not.

By the by, count me as someone who does NOT want to trade R. Delgado or J. Teheran this off-season. I would much rather trade T. Hanson and jettison JJ and save some dollars there.

Again, I know I am gonna hurt some feelings, but BMac will not be worth the $12 mil they’re gonna pay him next year. I’d rather divert those combined savings into a couple of OF’s. Catcher should never be a position where too many millions are spent because of the immense physical demands of the position. Another year of Ross and a FA fill-in for the position until Bethancourt arrives (Martin from the Yankees is a FA and probably would benefit from a return to the NL) would be more than serviceable, while $$$ resources are diverted to an organizational OF situation that is, to put it VERY charitably, an abject disaster.

For the play-in game, I’d start Huddy AND Medlen. Stick Meds at SS while Huddy goes after everyone but Beltran and Holliday. Bring Meds in to pitch, Prado to SS, Huddy to whatever position Prado was playing. Alternate the two for the whole nine innings.

I see no alternative to extending Mac, we have no adequate full-time replacement, even for what he is hitting now, and we have too many other places that could use help to make searching for a decent catcher yet another part of the equation.
The following year will be a different story since it will entail a long contract.

Well, nolie, truth be told, Chipper has been on a relative decline, albeit not an overt production decline. But, like Ken Griffey Jr. in his last 5-7 years, Chipper has been injured more than often the past seven seasons. I have my suspicions as to why, but that does not matter a whit right now. The facts are what they are: for a team that has been uber-dependant on Chipper, he has missed many, MANY critical moments in the past seven seasons.

Love the guy, but it is what it is.

ACE: love your optimism, but I am not so. Then again, it would not be the first time I am wrong.

However, the ravages of time and the position take their toll. Remember Javy Lopez had a MONSTER year in his walk year, which I am sure was science-aided. He did NOTHING of note once he signed with the O’s. I do not think BMac is that kind of guy, and he will have a ncie season next year, but not worth $12 mil. We NEED OF help NOW, and the Lowe money off the books, the Chipper money ditto, Hanson & JJ gone, & not wasting money on Bourn should help the Braves solve a chronically miserable OF situation at two positions.

Again, the days of Mike Piazza are over. Catcher is NOT a position where you spend tens of millions. A very good defensive, pitch-calling catcher catcher hitting .250 is just fine by me, so as long as I have OF’s that can hit, slug, and drive in runs consistently. I just don’t see BMac catching and being that kind of MVP-like presence in the lineup anymore. Not for that money, not even for one year, when pressing needs abound at positions with significantly lesser injury risk.

brian

September 20th, 2012
9:21 pm

MBBF – I do not know if this off season is the time for consideration of trading McCann but that is a good argument. The demands of the position of catcher take its toll and make it hard to justify an extended investment. Mauer will probably end up at 1B and even so the Twins are probably regretting that contract.

nolie

September 20th, 2012
9:22 pm

I’d like to see Mac stay, but only if he bounces back strongly next season, AND takes a home discount. If not, hopefully we will have some other spots more settled and will be able to spend the needed effort to replace him. I hope I’m wrong but I have little faith that Bethancourt will ever hit very well in the bigs

MiaBchBravesFan

brian

MBBF – I am sure that will be a topic of conversation this offseason – whether or not to keep McCann. If we are not going to extend is it worthwhile to trade him this offseason. We could get some very good prospects, young players and maybe get the OF we need. McCann would also benefit from a move to the AL where he can rest more while playing DH. Boston would be a good fit for him as they rebuild. The Braves could use his $12 million to help pay for Greinke or to pay for extensions of our young core while using the young players and/or prospects to fill gaps, rebuild our farm in regards to position players, and/or use the bounty to try and trade for Headley

nolie

that is in no way different from any other player in his thirtys. he has been more productive thru those times than most non-PEDers. and look at the batting title and another 100 RBI year. and even the last few years his numbers have been in the top few of NL third basemen including many who played all the time. Just not buying it in any but the most general way
