Nats to see improved Minor in series finale

(Staff writer Carroll Rogers is filling in for David O’Brien today.)

ESPN is descending upon Turner Field tonight for the Braves fourth appearance of the season as the game

Simmons scored winning run Friday (above), drove it in Saturday

Simmons scored winning run Friday (above), drove it in Saturday

of the week when the Braves host the first-place Nationals. Who knew it would actually live up to the billing?

Well, the fans did, who are showing up in good numbers and giving the Braves good and loud crowds to buoy them against the Nats.

But it wasn’t really looking too good when the Braves scored three runs in three losses to the Brewers earlier in the week and slumped into this series 8 ½ games back, their largest deficit in the division this season. Since then, the Braves have come up with some new ways to score runs – they won Friday on a throwing error and Saturday on a pitch that grazed Andrelton Simmons’ jersey with the bases loaded.

But when you’re the Braves and you lost games like the one in Washington on Aug. 20 when Dan Uggla froze on a ground ball hit to him with the infield in the 13th inning, you take them.

Tonight’s starter Mike Minor isn’t used to getting many runs of support anyway. The Braves are averaging only 3.2 runs while he’s in the game. And they’ve scored only two runs in the last two games he started.

Minor is keeping up his end of the deal, though, entering tonight’s game with 12 2/3 scoreless innings over his past two starts. He’s allowed only three hits, walked six and struck out 15 in that time.

Minor has faced the Nationals twice this season, allowing four earned runs in five innings each of those starts (a 7-5 win June 30 and an 8-4 loss May 26 – both at Turner Field.) But that last Nationals start coincides with when Minor really started making some changes and developing into the dominating pitcher he’s been the second half.

Minor faces Nats for first time since June 30

Minor faces Nats for first time since June 30

Minor was 4-6 with a 6.20 ERA in 15 starts as of June 30. Since then he is 4-4 with a 2.39 ERA in 12 starts. Among the things that have changed for Minor? He quit falling in long with his change-up, realizing hitters were sitting on it, and those were a lot of the home run balls he was giving up. He started using his bullpens more constructively to work on specific issues. He started pitching inside more, and he’s pitched with a lot more confidence.

I’m sure there are plenty of other reasons, but those are the ones that come to mind.

Minor’s assignment tonight is to outpitch Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez, who is the de facto ace of the Nats staff with Stephen Strasburg shut down for the rest of the season. Of course, being second fiddle to Strasburg can still mean you’re pretty good and Gonzalez, an NL Cy Young candidate, is trying to become the first 20-game winner in Washington since Dave Boswell won 22 for the Senators in 1953. He would also be the first 20-game winner in baseball this season.

Gonzalez is 19-7 with a 2.93 ERA, a .206 opponents’ batting average and 9.5 strikeouts per nine innings. He’s been especially tough of late, giving up only one runs in his past 22 innings over three starts, including a complete game shutout over the Cardinals. He’s allowed two or fewer runs in five of his past six starts, and in the other one he gave up only three. He did walk five in his last start in New York, so if his command is off again, that could give the Braves an opening.

Gonzalez is 2-1 with a 4.86 ERA in three starts this season against the Braves, including one on Sunday Night Baseball May 27, when he out-pitched Brandon Beachy in a 7-2 Nationals win.

In other Sunday night games: Aug. 12, the Braves lost to the Mets 6-5 in New York; on Aug. 26, Tim Hudson out-pitched Tim Lincecum in San Francisco in a 7-1 win. Tonight the Braves are looking for their first sweep over the Nationals since Sept. 25-27 of 2009.

The Dodgers walked off against St. Louis last night to pull even in the race for the second wild card spot. The Braves are seven games ahead of both of them with 16 to play.

McCann watch

I doubt Brian McCann is back in the lineup tonight, given that he had a hard time even getting down in his crouch yesterday. McCann has tendinitis just behind his right knee, an injury he first “tweaked” on the road trip, where the hamstring muscle connects to several tendons. McCann was planning to come in and get treatment and re-evaluate on Sunday, but he didn’t start any of the previous three games against Gonzalez this season anyway. J.C. Boscan started one and David Ross the other too.

Rotation watch

It’s a short attention span blog today but I was just thinking. The Braves announced that their pitchers for the upcoming Miami series would be Tim Hudson vs. Wade LeBlanc on Monday, Paul Maholm vs.

It's Medlen vs. Johnson on Wednesday

It's Medlen vs. Johnson on Wednesday

Nathan Eovaldi on Tuesday and Kris Medlen vs. Josh Johnson on Wednesday. The Braves then have two scheduled off days in a span of four days.

So if the Braves stay on their regular rotation, by just pushing back a pitcher until the day after the off day, Hudson would line up to pitch Sunday in Philadelphia, on Saturday Sept. 29 against New York and then pitch in a possible one-game wild card playoff on Friday, Oct. 5 on five days’ rest.

Or if they so choose, the Braves could manipulate the rotation, with upcoming off days, and set it up so that Medlen could pitch in the one-game playoff. Either way, you could have the one of those two ready to go in the one-game playoff and the other in Game 1 of a possible Division Series. A lot can happen between now and then, but it’s good to know for the Braves they would have the flexibility to map it out.

This and that

Beachy was bopping around the Braves clubhouse yesterday, shooting left-handed jumpers with the mini-basketball players have taken to shooting at grocery carts used for laundry in the clubhouse. He’s begun working out again, getting stronger. He said his elbow feels great and his flexibility is right back where it was before his Tommy John surgery on June 21.

He’s counting down the days until he can throw a baseball for the first time again on Oct. 21. It’ll just be lobs from 30 feet but he’s pretty excited about it nonetheless. Put him and Medlen in the mix with Hudson, Minor, Maholm and Tommy Hanson, and the Braves have to be pretty happy with how their rotation could shape up….

Matt Diaz had his cast removed and said he can already tell his thumb is much better because even when he rubs vitamin E on the surgery site, it doesn’t hurt, when doing something similar before did.

He expects to be cleared to start swinging a bat sometime around Thanksgiving which is when he normally does anyway. So that’s good news for Diaz going forward. He said Braves hand specialist Dr. Gary Lourie joked with him after his surgery (his second to remove splinters from a palm frond he got clearing his yard in Florida in 2006) that if there were any more splinters in there, he was the one who put them in there. In other words, he conducted a thorough search.

Not that Diaz is in any big hurry to do yard work anymore, but he said he couldn’t resist buying some heavy duty Teflon gloves he saw the other day. Can’t be too careful.

Braves lineup:

1. Bourn CF

2. Johnson LF

3. Heyward RF

4. Jones 3B

5. Freeman 1B

6. Uggla 2B

7. Ross C

8. Simmons SS

We don’t want Hudson pitching the 1 game play-in. His numbers show a true inconsistency and the amount of runs he has given up in the 1st inning this year are shocking. He is a sinker pitcher so it can take him a few innings to start finding his groove. Medlen is the clear choice to pitch the WC game because his command is lethal right now and he has command over 5 pitches.

Nats- Edwin Jackson 3.89 ERA, 28 Starts, 173 IP 1.198 WHIP , .238 OBA 103 ERA+ 1.8 WAR

Giants- Barry Zito 4.21 ERA, 29 Starts, 167 IP, 1.37 WHIP, .259 OBA, 82 ERA+, -0.2 WAR

And Zito is considered a bad pitcher…. he’s close to Tommy’s numbers, but his periphs are better

Tigers- Drew Smyly 4.26 ERA, 16 Starts, 87 IP, 1.281 WHIP, .254 OBA, 98 ERA+, 1.1 WAR

Tommy Hanson 4.33 ERA, 28 starts, 158 innings, 1.450 WHIP, .270 OBA, 93 ERA+, -0.4 WAR (worse than Zito’s)

You can’t seriously think that Hanson is a worse pitcher than Zito…..

And also, I think you said “maybe” a #5 on a rebuilding team. You have no idea what you’re talking about if you’re going to say something like that.

You’re position on Hanson is getting close to MFin’s, and thats really sad.

Hanson a 3 on many rebuilding teams, 4 on many contenders. would take a deep staff to make him a 5 at this point.

Buster Olney ESPN Insider
How Braves Learned From Their Collapse

ATLANTA — There was a basketball court of sorts set up in the Braves’ clubhouse on Saturday, with two shopping carts positioned as baskets on opposite sides of the room, about 20 feet apart. The object was to fire the ball into the top part of the cart — where a toddler would sit — and with great focus and intensity and laughter, various Atlanta players took turns attempting to successfully drop high-arcing shots into that very small space.

Dan Uggla was consistently good at this; Freddie Freeman got better when he made more athletic moves, rather than standing still as if he was shooting free throws. Craig Kimbrel had his right shoulder wrapped as part of his daily treatment and tried shooting with his left hand, which was unfortunate.

The players laughed with and at each other as this went on, and it was in the midst of that hilarity that one of them raised the subject of last September’s collapse with a reporter.

“Hey, it happened,” the veteran said. “There’s no sense in avoiding the topic.”

And they don’t. It’s just an acknowledged element of their shared history, in the way that an employee remembers the job interview he botched before joining his current company, or how a divorced man jokes about the alimony paid to an ex-wife. The context for the present is provided by the past.

Fredi Gonzalez will tell you flatly that he learned from what happened last September. This September, he’s been much less patient with the status quo and much more willing to make changes. Uggla was benched, and the slumping and injured Brian McCann was moved down in the lineup. Ben Sheets pitched well and was in the rotation, but then he struggled and has now been shifted into the bullpen.

Because of the near-complete collapse of what had been one of the best bullpens in the majors last season, Kimbrel, Eric O’Flaherty and Jonny Venters each have about 20 fewer appearances than they did a year ago. Last year, those three pitchers had been used so often that they had almost nothing left down the stretch; this September, they are all throwing well.

Kimbrel struck out the side with 10 pitches Friday, with a ferocity that was striking to some of his teammates, and he got three strikeouts again Saturday.

“Everybody in the ballpark knows a fastball is coming,” said Uggla, “and it doesn’t matter.”

Dating back to Aug. 28, Kimbrel has struck out 24 of the 36 batters he has faced, allowing four hits, two walks and one run. He has 104 strikeouts in 55.1 innings this season, with 23 hits and 14 walks. O’Flaherty has an 0.47 ERA in the second half and hasn’t allowed an earned run since July 13. Venters struggled earlier this season, raising questions about whether he had recovered from his 2011 workload, but he’s allowed runs in only two of his 20 appearances since the All-Star break.

The Braves were swept in Milwaukee earlier this week, raising questions about whether another collapse was in the making. But they beat the Washington Nationals on Friday and again on Saturday. What happened last year will always be a part of the Braves’ shared history, but they are working to create something new.

Chipper Jones walked into the room Saturday, aimed a shot at the shopping cart and drilled his first and only attempt, and raised an arm in celebration, the same thing you see when he hits a walk-off. The other players reacted loudly, not all of them generously.

It’s the same team, but a different time for all of them.

The Braves rallied in a big way Saturday.

A call went against the Nationals here Saturday, and what followed was a lot of ugliness, Adam Kilgore writes.

In the Nationals’ clubhouse, a thick skin is required.

McCann is day-to-day with knee tendinitis.

ATLANTA —

The Atlanta Braves say a man got $76,000 worth of tickets by using bad checks.

Police told WSB-TV (bit.ly/V034bQ) that 36-year-old James Lally was arrested in Atlanta and made his first court appearance Saturday. His bond was set at $20,000.

He’s accused of buying 1,300 tickets and then bouncing the five checks he wrote to pay for them. He’s accused of selling the tickets at a bar and online. Authorities are unsure how many were sold. The Braves have deactivated the tickets, but there is no way to know who has the tickets that will no longer work.

Authorities said Lally is also accused of bouncing checks in Florida

It was an incomplete pass because he did not maintain control throughout- that is a rule they changed a few years back- you cannot be bobbling the ball when you go out of bounds (and it appeared to hit the ground also)- he clearly did not have control of the ball when he was going out. (Mike Pereira agreed that it was not a catch)

But from what I could tell is that he caught he ball, had two feet in bounds, and then made a football play, and then got hit by a defender. He had possesion until he was hit by the defender. Even with the new rule, my understanding is that if you catch the ball, have two feet in bounds, make a football play, and then get hit and the ball comes loose, its still a catch.

To me, it didn’t look like he had complete control of the ball- was moving even as he was being hit (I know, balls move, but that apparently is enough)- but I think they said he didn’t make a football move. You don’t have to lose possession- you just have to not have complete control (which is any movement of the ball)- and given that he did lose the ball as he was going out of bounds, that typically equals an incomplete pass.

Hanson is on his way to throwing a full year with the Braves, less one 15 day stint on the DL for back problems, for the first time in two years (failed to complete 2011).

All his stats are disappointing relative to his career norms. But, he’s generally showing that the injury is probably behind him.

I hope Braves sign some guy named “Jurgens” just so I can say “Jurgens WILL be with the Braves in 2013.”

Jair Jurrjens, on the other hand, won’t be on the Atlanta roster in 2013. Even if he were non-tendered and re-signed for a reasonable salary, Braves would probably like to sign someone with lower injury risk for the 10th place on the depth chart.

That hair was very finely split. Right down the middle.

However, could we say that Greinke is Walking in LA

Look ahead as we pass, try and focus on it
I won’t be fooled by a cheap cinematic trick
It must have been just a cardboard cut out of a man
Top-forty cast off from a record stand
Walkin’ in L.A.
Walkin’ in L.A., nobody walks in L.A.
Walkin’ in L.A.
Walkin’ in L.A., nobody walks in L.A.

I don’t know could’ve been a lame jogger maybe
Or someone just about to do the freeway strangler baby
Shopping cart pusher or maybe someone groovie
One thing’s for sure, he isn’t starring in the movies.
‘Cause he’s walkin’ in L.A.

[refrain]

You only see ‘em drivin’ cars out on the street
Nobody’s walkin’ walkin’ walkin’ walkin’ walkin’
You won’t see a kid walkin’ home from school
Nobody’s walkin’ walkin’ walkin’ walkin’ walkin’
Their mothers pick ‘em up in a car pool
Nobody’s walkin’ walkin’ walkin’ walkin’

[refrain]

Could it be that the smog’s playing tricks on my eyes
or is it a rollerskater in some kind of headphone disguise
Maybe somebody who just ran out of gas,
Making his way back to the pumps the best way he can.

[refrain]

Regarding Hanson: Unfortunately, as a 26 year old starter he should be improving as he enters the prime of his career, instead in every possible measure as a starting pitcher he has regressed from a top of the rotation pitcher to a pitcher that will not get a start in the post season. His biggest liability, besides giving up 23 hrs. this season, is inability to hold runners on base which unfortunately with a .270 obp is very common.

Ps. If Minor had Hanson’s run support he would have 15 wins

Greetings all, tough weekend for VaTech football, as for UVA… well, it has been a pretty tough decade or two. Trying to root home the Braves for the playoffs and can’t help but feel frustrated when they forget how to catch and throw the ball. The not being able to drive in men in scoring position seems to go without saying. If I were an opposing pitcher, I think I would walk the lead off man and balk him to second to prevent the Braves from getting a hit… I cannot remember another team with such a disparity in getting guys on but not getting them in.

All that said, Simmons may be the game changer for the Bravos. I really loved what Paul Janish brought to the ream but Simmons also brings his bat to the game as well as his glove. Walk really needs to work with Paul in leveling out his swing to hit more line drives, he is blessed with Raphael Belliard power. Even if he could hit around .240 he could be a Gold-Glove candidate at short.

While he’s at it, Walker could put a martingale on Uggla to stop that upper cut swing of his too. Danno has enough power to drive em out without trying to put it in launch mode which results in mile high pop ups.

“count: Buford Highway is in another country, not sure if it’s Vietnam or Mexico…I guess it’s according to what block you are on.”

I remember when that area (Chamblee) was older rebel flag GA natives (early 80s?). It’s a great area for food though. Sometimes I’ll just drive around Buford Hwy and if I a place is “crowded” I figure it’s the word and just go in. Usually works. Once, I got straight ignored. I mean like, we just had to leave, we were never going to be served. One of my favorite Chines places is in the Mall of Korea. Always thought that was kinda funny.

But there are a lot of places up there where you can be mighty impressed with flavor for $20. If the taco shack has tongue or brain, it’s legit.

Once I was in this Chinese place and everyone was eating this one dish, bowl under chin scooping like there was no tomorrow. I was like, I want that dish. The waitress was, no you don’t. I was like, yes I do. She was right. Dish was basically Asian noodles with equal parts hot black tar asphalt and sea salt. I was one bite and done.

RBI > OBP.

After watching this Braves offense and their runners LOB game in and game out, if you do not believe the above than there is nothing that can help you understand the game of baseball.

I do not care what Bill James or any of the saberheads say—

I will take a run batted in over a runner left in scoring postion anyday.

OBP means nothing to this Braves team — we get man on but do not score.

Uggla to his credit had the right idea mentally he just didn’t execute it. Runners 2nd and 3rd no out 3-0 count. Uggla guessed that Stammen will throw a fastball strike which he did. Uggla just didn’t execute. I mean he would have gotten that ball in the air atleast and that was exactly why he swung at the 3-0 pitch to put it in the air and get a run in.

Even if Uggla walked I still don’t know if we would have been able to get a run in that inning with Ross and Simmons coming up.

This sweep of the Nats is 100% diametrically opposed to what took place September of last year! This sweep of the Nationals (and of course game three) is showing the vast difference. Mike Minor pitched another excellent ballgame. The hitters were clutch and the speed of Michael Bourn made such a huge difference in the game. Then, the depth of the bullpen is so good that Fredi did not even have to use the big three out of the pen to end the game with barely a wimper from the Nats’ bats.

For the record, Adam LaRouche still has a very sweet swing!

The magic number for the Braves over the Dodgers is now down to 8 games with 15 games remaining — very close to that 1-2 ratio that makes it practically impossible to get overtaken. The Cardinals beat the Dodgers today and so the Cards remain 7 back of the Braves and the Dodgers are now 8 games back in the loss column with the Braves having just 15 games left to play.

Hard to pick a player of the game for this one tonight. It was a true team effort.

What a complete disaster on so many levels. All they had to do was win one game and they couldn’t do it. Men against boys. If you’re trying to pick a post-season roster, who do you keep? Really, who do you keep? Who showed up and played well when all the lights were on, when it really mattered? It’s a tough call. Bryce perhaps. Who else? Who looked ready to play for the world championship?

And if one more person says, “Well, if we win x number games then the Braves have to win y number games” I’m going to scream. It makes no difference what the math is if you’re playing crap baseball.

And just maybe since WARD got his wee-hours wish of a sweep, the NATS will become insects once again, and the BRAVES can give CHIPPER a pennant as a going away present. 15 and counting until CHIPPER is no more in a regular season game in ATLANTA. Bummer man. Brings a fan down.

Despite what many here may think, GREG WALKER has really done an excellent job at instilling patience and discipline at the plate. Our miserable BA with RISP is hopefully part of the learning process transitioning from the free-wheeling strike-out artists of earlier seasons, to the leading team in the M.L. in walks. Only slightly above the ML team average [1086] in SO’s [1127], but far above MLB average [439] in BB’s [514]. Next closest TAMPA BAY [500]. If this progression continues to take hold, we should begin to see SO’s decline , BB hold steady, and hits with RISP increase.

By comparison here’s last year: 2011….1260 SO….504 BB; 162 G

Nicely written by Adam Kilgore:

The usual feeling Gio Gonzalez evokes when he pitches is joy. Sunday night, it was work. The Atlanta Braves turned his bid to win 20 games into a shift on the assembly line. They spit on pitches on the edge of the strike zone. They flicked and fouled away tough pitches. He threw his final pitches through persistent rain. His nationally televised showcase became a backbreaking slog, and the Washington Nationals headed home with a pennant race on their hands.

Venice Jim

September 17th, 2012

Left-handed pitchers have stymied the Braves most of this year; they entered Sunday 27-29 against them. Lately, though, they have managed to neutralize Gonzalez. In his last three starts against Atlanta, a possible playoff opponent, Gonzalez lasted five, five and 4 2/3 innings.

Avilan has been nothing short of solid since he arrived.

Which is why, in my opinion, we can afford to trade EOF or even Venters. Avilan should be able to step in capably next year. Remember, the reason that JV came up was because of an injury to Takashi Saito, I believe. Avilan might do the same. He’s looking great so far.

Better be careful trading away the bullpen, TOBF. It’s easy to take for granted when it’s good.

You’re willing to pay Greinke $20 mil for 200 innings of a 3.00 ERA (at his best – hasn’t done it since ‘09) but not to pay EOF $3.5 mil for 60 innings of a 2.00 ERA.

The innings all count the same. (Well, actually, almost all of late inning reliever’s innings are high-leverage).

The commitment to EOF would be one year, while you’re gonna have to live or die with Greinke for at least 6.

Not saying you’re wrong. Just think about it.

I personally have met Mr. Schiano and he is a quality person. In the post-game conference he correctly characterized his defensive philosophy; however, it was a tad misleading in that his kids, in a vast majority of college games didn’t go to the extremes on display today at Giants Stadium or whatever they now call it. When he loses a game, he is a real-well–horses @ss…lower lip hanging and all like the world just came to an end type. He’s a real complex individual and, with a marketing degree from Bucknell, no dummy.

He just didn’t like somethng the Giants’ coaches were doing earlier in the game and called for that bit of silliness there at the end….that’s just Greg, headstrong, takes things personally….always wants to be the cognitive champ. He’ll learn soon enough…and, before long, he will possess a humble heart that only the hard knocks of the head coaching position slams one with.

Schiano was an assistant for the Bears (def.), was at the U….even had a stint with JoePa–all prior to RU….he knows what he’s doing defensively but— during his 11 years at Rutgers; as Head C.; his in game decisions have long been questioned. He wasn’t considered by many in the know to be a good in-game manager. He largely was hired by TB because of his player development/organizational/disciplinarian prowess. In 11 seasons he never won a Big East title but sent many NFL ready kids to the Pros….he has a lot of upsides and I do love the guy. What he did at the end of today’s contest with the NY Giants doesn’t surprise me one bit.

How about PAY the guys who actually MOVE THE LINE and take the pressure off a decent pitching staff.

Braves can win with Hudson, Medlen, Minor, Maholm, Delgado in 2013.

But UNLESS the top 4 – Bourn – Prado – Heyward – Freeman – is preserved ….forget it in ‘13. 5-6-7 is a total cluster and that needs to be addressed as well.

Uggla only started to hit a little when he realized his godfather was going to bench him. Paying Mac even $12 million for 3-5 days a week isn’t worth it — he needs to be in the AL.

If he is a young player on a non contending team, good chance that their existing team might see them in their building plans.

Like Houston’s Justin Maxwell or even LAA’s Peter Bourjos.

I don’t think we have to go that cheap anyway.

Anyway, the Braves are in a postion to make the run now — but I am not counting on anything because of what happenede last yr.

Great series by the Braves and they are not BUMBS anymore.

Minor is a keeper now & he is pretty much an untouchable. I hope we can keep Hudson beyone ‘13 cause he has been a bargain, a great Braves and one guy we might get a hometown discount for IF we do not disrespect him next yr with a poor offer.

Huddy has at minimum three good yrs left after 13, just my opinion. Maybe even a couple more.

We also need to look at another catcher behind Mc Cann and Ross cause Mc Cann is too injury prone.

It’s great to see the Braves handle the Nats this weekend. It was as if the team was exorcising demons associated with being the Nats whipping boys for a few years now. Like most fans, I went to bed last night with a warm and fuzzy feeling about the sweep.

I woke up this morning and the warm and fuzzy stuff was gone.

This is a team that is capable of sweeping a series, being swept the next series, then sweeping the next series. It just happened! This has been the M-O of the 2012 Braves from day one of the season. They have been maddenly inconsistent.

During the regular season, the hot/cold streaks aren’t as much of a factor. As long as a team has more hot streaks than cold streaks, they can reach the playoffs. Example: This Braves team. Being in the midst of a hot streak can carry a team through post season, as long as when they do lose a game, it doesn’t send them into a death spiral of ineptness. (When the Braves lose, they lose ugly)

So when I read that the Nats have a tough schedule against teams fighting for the last WC slot, I see the Braves have the Marlins, Phillies, Marlins, Mets and Pirates. I see at least 4 out of 5 series the Braves should win. That being said, the lack of focus this Braves team sometimes has, could rear it’s ugly head when they are playing against the doormats. I hope not.

Note to team: Don’t pat yourselves on the back today. You still have games to play against teams who aren’t going to lay down for you.

I will close with what I hope is a positive note. It would seem that as close as the second WC race is, teams will be battling to the last day to get it. As a result, whoever the second WC team is will likely not get a chance to set their rotation so their ACE pitches the play-in game against the Braves. If the Braves draw their ace simply because of the way the rotation falls, then that’s just bad luck.

Yes, but it also shows how twitchy those low-scoring close games can be. Outcome can turn on the luck of an error, the grazing of a jersey, a bad bounce, all sorts of stuff, most of which has little to do with the quality of the teams involved.

OnlyBraves – Maybe you need to go and look at what EOF has done since becoming a Brave. There is no way Avilan can replace him. Avilan is a good pitcher, but you need both of those LHRP in the pen. And I wouldn’t count Venters out either.

Neither are going to bring in trade what they are worth keeping the best bullpen around together. And neither are going to cost enough to need to trade them. Believe me – if they can get EOF to sign a two year $6 mil deal, they should jump on it. They won’t find anyone better to set up the 8th for Kimbrel and the two of them at the back of the pen are a major reason we’ve done as well as we have the past couple of years (and EOF for four).

They are much cheaper than the top line pitcher you keep railing about us needing and there is no team better after the sixth than the Braves – despite not having that pitcher you covet so much.

And a new sports and entertainment district could appease the Braves, whose lease on Turner Field and nearby parking lots ends in 2016, potentially freeing them up to leave the area. While team owner Liberty Media is unlikely to move the Braves, team executives recently met with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed to press for ways to add a jolt to the neighborhood.

Heyward would need a BB per game, plus one, I think to hit my second half number of 42.

Not likely.

He’s been ultra aggressive this year. It’s worked for him and helped him achieve that .490+ SLG. But I’d love to see him put it all together next year and produce a near .400 OBP, plus the big SLG numbers. I’ll be looking for .880 next year. ;)

“Tomahawkin, September 17th, 2012, 8:02 am … “Big Red is pitching his way to Kansas City, Take it to Vegas he gets Traded in the offseason…He is Chuck James without the Hype”

Hanson has had some bad games recently, but Saturday wasn’t one of them.

He walked a guy and made a bad pitch to give up a homer … 2 runs.

When his defense (including himself) kicked the ball around the infield, he held the opposition to 2 runs in that inning.

When his RF dropped a ball, he kept the guy from scoring.

He couldn’t go as deep as you might have liked, in part because he had to make extra pitches to get outs that should have been recorded earlier in the pitch count and in part because the Braves needed some offense when his spot came up.

3 things could happen with Hanson –

- He becomes a “bottome of rotation guy” for us, isn’t re-signed after next year
- He gets traded during off-season
- He actually continues to make adjustments, and becomes a solid #3, or even a #2

He will NOT be non-tendered.

Fredi needs to make whatever changes he needs to make so that Medlen pitches the WC game.

I finally got to watch a Medlen start the other day in it’s entirety and now I realize why he’s drawing so many Maddux comparisons. The movement on his fastball is absolutely 100% Maddux-esque. The way it tails back into the zone at the last second… hitters either just sit there and watch it called for strike 3 or they swing so late there’s no chance of them doing anything with the pitch.

I know Hudson is the elder statesman of the rotation, that he’s put in the time and earned the chance and blah blah blah… but this isn’t about egos, this is about getting to that next step, and there’s nobody on the staff who gives the team a better shot at winning an elimination game that Medlen. It’s going to be hard to come back and beat the Cardinals, or whoever, facing a 4-0 first inning deficit compliments of Mr Hudson.

From Ryan Zimmerman on the series:

Or, “We lost it more than they won it”. Got some of that from the Nats’ postgame show on Friday, too. Spoke of how it took the Braves’ best pitcher plus a late error to “lose” the game, and that they (the announcers) were feeling good about the next two games in the series. Oops.

goes to show what a difference strong pitching can make in a short series.

Yes, but it also shows how twitchy those low-scoring close games can be. Outcome can turn on the luck of an error, the grazing of a jersey, a bad bounce, all sorts of stuff, most of which has little to do with the quality of the teams involved.

That’s something the small-ball aficianados should keep in the mind. They never do, though.

Yes, close games generally can at times hinge on the seemingly trivial.

Buster Olney Blog

Who will get Josh Hamilton?

A general manager preparing for the offseason recently asked others in his organization what they thought of Josh Hamilton, and of course, the response was nothing but raves for Hamilton, as a player. They talked about the damage he can do at the plate, his ability to carry a team, his ridiculous strength. Hamilton leads the majors with 42 homers and 123 RBIs, and it’s within the realm of possibility that he’ll finish the year with 50 homers and 140 RBIs.

But Hamilton’s ability as a hitter is almost a given, so the next question the GM asked might be the more important one, and maybe even the most asked question of the offseason:

How many years in a contract would you give Hamilton?

If Major League Baseball’s contracts were structured like those in the National Football League, Hamilton would draw some level of interest from almost all teams on a short-term deal. But baseball contracts are fully guaranteed, unlike NFL contracts, so that if Hamilton goes into serious regression or has some sort of lingering off-field issues, his next team could be on the hook for years.

The Texas Rangers clearly have their doubts about how long they want to invest in Hamilton, because they are preparing for Plan Bs: They have done background work on Justin Upton and Jacoby Ellsbury and others, knowing that they may be in the market for an impact outfielder if somebody outbids them for Hamilton.

“I think they already have a very defined set of parameters on what they want to do with him,” said an AL official last week. “I don’t think they’ll budge from those.”

Does that mean they’ll offer him a high salary for two years? Three? Four? Hamilton turned 31 in May, and the Rangers have the strongest sense of how much his off-field issues are a day-to-day factor. Tim Raines and Darryl Strawberry played together with the Yankees and they both were, by definition, recovering addicts. The Yankees didn’t worry about Raines at all — and on the other hand, Strawberry’s demons lingered constantly.

Where does Hamilton stand? For a team that will be asked to invest $20 million to $25 million annually, over the course of a multi-year deal, it’s a major consideration.

One executive said earlier this summer, “He’s so athletic, and there isn’t anything he can’t do on a baseball field. But he was out of the game for a long time because of [his substance abuse problems], and you have to ask, what kind of a toll did that take on his body?”

The potential market for Hamilton is murky. The Los Angeles Dodgers are out, having locked themselves into an outfield of Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier and Carl Crawford (and even before adding Crawford, they had no intention of bidding on Hamilton this winter). The Los Angeles Angels would seem to be a longshot, given their relative glut of OF-DH types: Mike Trout, Mark Trumbo, Vernon Wells, Kendrys Morales. Torii Hunter has expressed a desire to come back, too, and he’s a productive player.

The Boston Red Sox have the money to sign Hamilton, having created the payroll flexibility with the Gonzalez/Beckett/Crawford trade, but it makes no sense for Boston to veer away from pricey contracts on older players — and then immediately dive back into another long-term deal with a player beyond his 30th birthday. Boston is probably out.

The New York Yankees have money to spend, always, but their offseason focus will be on locking up Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson, within the confines of the luxury-tax cap (a perspective that could change dramatically if the Yankees don’t make the playoffs.) The New York Mets are expected to be very conservative in their player movement this winter, as they wait for the Johan Santana and Jason Bay deals to expire. The Philadelphia Phillies doesn’t have a lot of payroll flexibility, given their long-term investments in Ryan Howard, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels. The St. Louis Cardinals ‘ payroll already includes significant obligations to Yadier Molina and Matt Holliday, and available funds will be devoted to pitching.

There are many teams that wouldn’t conceive of taking on a massive long-term contract: Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates, Miami Marlins (who have been in cutback mode after bloating their payroll last winter), Colorado Rockies, San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks, Kansas City Royals, Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland Athletics, Tampa Bay Rays. Milwaukee’s focus is on starting pitching. The Houston Astros have money to spend and could really use a marquee name to draw some fans — as we’ve seen in the Clemens flirtations — but to date, the Astros have signaled their intentions to build organically. The Minnesota Twins are paying Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau.

That leaves the Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers. Atlanta has some expiring contracts, with the retirement of Chipper Jones and the impending free agency of Michael Bourn, but its budget hasn’t grown beyond the $85-90 million range in years; it’s hard to imagine the Braves extending themselves for Hamilton, who would be another left-handed hitter in a lineup that already is heavy in lefties.

If the Nationals have one true need, it’s for a true center fielder, and given the team’s long-term investment in corner outfielders Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper, the pursuit of Hamilton seems very unlikely.

The Cubs are at the outset of a long-term rebuilding plan and may not be competitive for a couple of years, at least, and so paying Hamilton $20-$25 million would make little sense other than to provide a Sammy Sosa-like presence for the daily matinees. Keep in mind, too, that Theo Epstein has spoken of veering off course in the last years in Boston, when the Red Sox signed players to long-term, big-money deals — and that last winter, the Cubs never really got serious about Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder.

The Giants’ future business model is to build around pitching and Buster Posey, and there will be efforts made in the future to get Posey locked up to a long-term deal. As with the Cubs, it’s possible for the Giants to find budget space for Hamilton, but the guess here is that if San Francisco has interest in Hamilton, it will be conservative.

The Orioles have made some inroads toward winning back their fans. But manager Buck Showalter places a high value on stability and predictability, and so long as he has an influential voice, signing Hamilton — who could reach 150 games played for the second time in his career in the last days of the regular season — wouldn’t seem to be his typical choice.

The Mariners could use Hamilton’s power, of course, but it’s unclear whether Seattle will be in the market for a big-money free agent — or whether Hamilton would be open to the idea, because a lot of marquee hitters have had no interest in going to Safeco Field.

The White Sox have salary flexibility forthcoming, with the contracts of Jake Peavy and A.J. Pierzynski set to expire. But while Chicago has players in the $12-14 million range in Paul Konerko and Adam Dunn, there has been no indication they are ready to jump into the $20-$25 million neighborhood.

Detroit? “They’re always the wildcard, aren’t they?” said a GM.

Yep. And Hamilton could play left field for the Tigers, given Austin Jackson’s presence in center field. Only Mike Illitch knows if he’d be willing to give yet another slugger huge dollars, as he did with Fielder last winter.

All it took for Fielder to get a $214 million contract last winter was the sudden and surprising interest of Detroit. All that Pujols needed to get a $248 million deal was the sudden and surprising interest of Angels owner Arte Moreno.

That’s all it will take for Hamilton. But there would appear to be a very confined field of potential bidders.

So many ways the Braves can manipulate the rotation to get it lined up for the playoffs, but they’ve got to get Medlen, Hudson, and Minor going back to back in some order. I guess it would depend on how the next week goes, and whether they are in the running for the division. Here’s one option:

17th Hudson
18th Maholm
19th Medlen
20th Off
21st Hanson
22nd Minor
23rd Hudson
24th Off
25th Medlen
26th Hanson
27th Minor
28th Hudson
29th Maholm
30th Medlen
1st Hanson
2nd Minor
3rd Sheets
4th Off
5th Medlen
6th Minor
7th Hudson

Ya have to wonder what the Kershaw injury will do to the Dodgers offseason plans. Hip surgery would most likely sideline him until mid-late May. Billingsley may require Tommy John surgery. We score a bunch one day, not so much the other days of the week.

Anyway, bottom line is winning more than “they” do. Third best record in baseball is still not enough to win our division, leaving us in the crapshoot to come on the 5th. Who knows what facets of the game will show up that day. Looks now like we’re in for sure barring something never before seen.

A Player Called Chipper
Nineteen years ago a pro player called Chipper
Started playing America’s game, Bobby Cox was his skipper
High School played short
Braves put him at third
Seemed that he liked it
Did not say a word
A batting champ
Switch hitting home runs
MVP, dad is proud of his son
It’s rare a guy plays all of his years
With the same team, a salute to you, cheers
Singles, doubles, triples too
And yes home runs they’re more than a few
A chopper to Chipper a bare handed play
Wow! What a throw what can I say
On Schmidt, on Brett, on Boyers, Ken, and Clete
When it comes to third base, Chipper Jones can’t be beat
He was younger then, but now he’s turned old
The best of the best is what will be told
It seems like yesterday he started to play
We’re sure are going to miss him when he goes away
Look at him run, at times even steal
One year in left field for a team he’s unreal
His truly a legend baseball never forgets
He’s about to retire but he’snot done yet
Breaking records still playing one great game
We will see you next time Cooperstown Hall of Fame
Standing ovations a final farewell
Opponentstip their caps as well
Knute Rockne once said “Lets win for the Gipper!”
But I will never forget number 10 on a player called Chipper

Braves have scored 49 runs in 15 September games. Almost exactly the scoring rate of the 2011 collapse (3.266 rpg in Sept 2012 vs. 3.222 rpg in Sept. 2011). Pitching is the only thing preventing another epic, generational collapse (not to over-dramatize, of course)

MLB confuses me…that one game play-in….I just can’t wrap my head around who came up with that idea, and when they pitched it, how come they didn’t get fired? How is this inserted into the season when the whole regular season is based on series. When teams structure their entire team around winning series with multiple pitchers that can start and relieve.

I really hope for baseball’s sake, the 2 teams finishing 4th overall in their respective leagues are not bumped out by a single game elimination. You will have actually REMOVED playoff games from these teams that would have had a series last year.

In this day and age, trying to expand the playoffs, this is the idea someone came up with and it passed a vote? I realize you can’t expand to 6 because a bye doesn’t work in this sport.

8 teams make it, each league. First week of the playoffs is a quick and ultra exciting best of 3 round to go on and get it back to the usual 4 that we’re used to. Boom! The top teams will not get bounced if they are any good because there is a HUGE difference from 1-8 and if they did get bounced, who cares, they deserve it and everyone loves the underdog. Best of 3 also gives the fans a ton of elimination games, and those are clearly the most exciting part of the playoffs. (just not in a one game format…best of 3 lets you see some rotation depth)

It would possibly be the most electric week of the year and gets you down to 4 teams without making the season go on forever. Teams are built to win these 3 game series all year long, carry it forward to the playoffs.

It’s either that or leave it at 4 but a single game just isn’t how to decide a playoff team. It’ll be an exciting day for Braves fans, but if we lose, LOOK OUT! There will be plenty of anger and it might be well deserved.

the WC play-in is an elimination game, so you have to use your best pitcher, period. medlen can start the game in regular rest. he is the obvious choice. you do it that way and huddy pitches games 1 and 5 or the NLDS, with medlen in game 3.

nah, my perception is longer than 10 days.

We’ll score 8 here, 9 there, then 0 or 1 or 2 for 3 or 4 days, then maybe a 5 spot, then some more 2 run games. Average number of runs is somewhat meaningless to me because your average can be bumped up so much by one huge game.

This coming week, we could easily score, say, 7 runs in 4 games….wouldn’t surprise me one bit. We might score 20 runs in those 4 games but if 12 come in one game?

Anyway…..I do know we’re a pretty darn good team, and if we could somehow manage to go on a consistent run with our bats while holding the line with our pitching, we’re gonna be dang dangerous down the stretch. Problem is that word – if.

The gamblers question. I really think that Fredi and the Braves will spin it some way that gets Hudson the W/C game and if the good Hudson shows up and the Braves pull off a victory then they can have Meds for games 1 and 5. That sounds pretty good.

However, I think it’s just too much of a gamble in a “win or go home” game. Personally I would give Meds the ball in that game.

Average number of runs is somewhat meaningless to me because your average can be bumped up so much by one huge game.

Which is why I’ve tried (and tried and tried, LOL) to show that the frequency of games in which they scored four or more was very high.

And, in fact, in June, July, and August, I saw very few instances in which they scored fewer than 4 runs for as many as two games in a row, let alone your “3 or 4 days”. They did have the losing streak in May when they couldn’t buy a run scored, but other than that? Not so much.

Sepetember has been a different story, in that they have more games scoring fewer than four than games scoring four or more. But they cranked out five in each of the last two games, so maybe that malaise is over.

Just as it was over on May 29, when the team proceeded score four or more runs in 18 of their next 26 games.

To be honest if you look at it this year, the Nats or Reds could very well have played the Phillies……..as a number 8.
