Kris Medlen was surrounded (again) by reporters early Saturday afternoon when backup catcher and amiable veteran David Ross ambled past in the clubhouse and said, loud enough so that everyone would hear, “All I’m saying is I caught Med twice and he had 25 punchies in 16 innings. That’s all I’m saying.”

More and more, when you ask people about Medlen....
(Ross caught Medlen’s Sept. 3 start against Colorado, when he collected a career-high 12 strikeouts in a five-hit complete game, and caught Medlen’s start Friday against Washington, when he struck out 13 in seven innings. Brian McCann caught Medlen’s start between those two, Sept. 8 at New York, when he had three strikeouts in six innings.)
Just as Ross is saying the above, veteran pitcher Tim Hudson, he of the self-deprecating sense of humor, walks in from the dining area and cracks to Ross, “Where is that [stuff] when you catch me.”
And Ross, without missing a beat, busts his friend’s [chops] with this: “That’s like driving a Rolls-Royce and then going to a beat-up Chevy.”
The inference, of course, being that young Medlen is the Rolls.
And the way he’s pitching right now, Medlen certainly is a top-of-the-line model pitcher. Can it last? I don’t think anyone’s expecting him to keep this up. I mean, the guy is 7-0 with an 0.86 ERA in nine starts, with 66 strikeouts and eight walks in 62-2/3 innings.
After going 0-2 with a 9.72 ERA in his first two major league starts in May 2009, Medlen is 13-0 with a 2.64 ERA in his past 25 starts. That’s just ridiculous. That doesn’t happen.
In his past three starts, Medlen is 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA, .177 opponents’ average and 28 strikeouts with three walks in 22 innings.
And get this: He’s the first Braves pitcher since 1900 to have two games with at least 12 strikeouts in the same month. Think about all the great Braves pitchers who’ve not done that, from Spahn and Niekro to Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine.
“We enjoy it, watching him go in and out, throwing pitches that guys aren’t looking for,” said closer Craig Kimbrel, who added that the relievers like laughing at hitters flailing at Medlen’s variety of pitches, including what some Braves refer to as his “Bugs Bunny” change-up.
The Braves have won 20 consecutive games that he’s started. Again, ridiculous. Doesn’t happen. Hasn’t happened since the Yankees won 20 starts in a row in 2001 by Roger Clemens, who (allegedly) might have had some help, if you know what I mean.
As a starter and reliever this season, Medlen has allowed a combined .210 average by lefty batters, with just one homer in 214 at-bats, and a .252 OBP and .271 slugging percentage (.523 OPS). Righty batters aren’t doing much better against him, batting .222 with a .559 OPS and three homers in 207 at-bats.
He got no decision Friday night while allowing one run in seven innings of a 2-1 Braves win, snapping his six-start winning streak. He struck out three batters in the first and fourth innings, getting three consecutive Nationals looking at called strikes in the fourth after Adam LaRoche’s leadoff single.
His eight called strikeouts were the most by any major league pitcher this season and the most by a Braves pitcher since Greg Maddux in 2000.
Ah, there’s that name again. In so many conversations I’ve had with other players or media members in recent weeks, the name that seems to come up most often for comparison purposes is Maddux, the future Hall of Famer and one of the two or three greatest pitchers of the past generation or two.
And no, the comparison isn’t based on the fact that neither Maddux nor Medlen is the least bit physically imposing.

... they mention this guy, the great Maddux.
“We’re seeing the Greg Maddux effect take over,” Chipper Jones said today in the clubhouse, before anyone else had mentioned Maddux’s name. “He’s the closest thing I’ve seen to Maddux for the simple fact he’s got the devastating change-up. Doggie [Maddux] would kill you with command of the fastball and cutter early in the count, and then put you away with the change-up. And Medlen is able to make the ball start off on the plate and come back on the corner. The one difference, Doggie could make the ball go both ways on both sides of the plate. Med doesn’t have the cutter, but he’s got a better breaking ball than Doggie did.
“But the approach to getting people out is the same.”
Let that marinate for a moment. Chipper, who’s played for the Braves for two decades, and who was a teammate of Maddux’s for a long time and saw sheer greatness up close on a regular basis, continually drops Maddux’s name into the discussion when asked about Medlen. Should tell you plenty about what guys who’ve been around and seen a lot of things think about Medlen.
This is no flash-in-the-pan success, that’s become quite evident.
Long as Chipper was dropping Mad Dog’s name in the conversation, I asked him if he saw similar intelligence in Medlen, realizing this is quite a leap because I personally think Maddux is probably the smartest baseball player I’ve ever covered.
“Yeah, and poise,” Chipper replied. “Confidence. You can see it. He’s oozing it right now. That’s a lot of what this game is, is going out there and knowing you can execute your pitch and get people out.”
Chipper also pointed out that Medlen benefited from a generous strike zone. Or, viewed another way, he exploited it. Like Tom Glavine and Maddux always did.
“It was a pretty big zone last night,” Chipper said. “There were a couple of calls that I wasn’t real happy with when I was up there. But it’s not [Medlen’s] fault. He goes out there and expands [the zone], if he continually dots the corner at two and three inches off the plate, then that guy proves to him he’s going to get it, then all of a sudden it goes to four inches off the plate. That’s what the good ones do, they manipulate the umpires into giving them a quarter of an inch here, a half an inch there.”
I asked Michael Bourn about Medlen after last night’s game. I think it was the first time Bourn’s had a chance to view a Medlen start from a different perspective, from the dugout, as Bourn had a rare rest and didn’t enter the game until the seventh inning. So I asked him about that.
“Well, I actually have a better perspective when I’m behind him [playing center field] because I can see the ball and see what he’s doing,” Bourn said. “But he’s hard to figure out, man. I think the best thing about him is he’s smart. He was once a position player before, so he has a feel for what a hitter’s doing and what he’s trying to do. If you watch him, he doesn’t just go off of his stuff. He watches what the hitter’s doing.
“I told him once before, ‘You’re smart,’ and he kind of just walked off like, ‘What?’ I said, ‘You’re smart, man.’ I think your best pitchers are really intelligent. They don’t just go with their stuff, they think it through as the game goes on.”
BRAVES LINEUP Saturday
• Today’s matchup: It’s Tommy Hanson against Nats righty Edwin Jackson (9-10, 3.85 ERA).
Hanson is 0-3 with a 4.67 ERA in five starts since coming back from a stint on the DL for a back strain. He’s lasted fewer than six innings in each of the past four, and the Braves have scored one or no runs while he was in four of his past five starts and two runs while he was in the other.
Hanson is 3-3 with a 4.27 ERA in 11 career starts vs. the Nationals, including 1-3 with a 5.73 ERA and .305 opponents’ average in his past seven.
Against Hanson, Michael Morse is 5-for-13 with two homers (but still out of the lineup with a sore wrist). But Adam LaRoche is 2-for-16 with five strikeouts and Ryan Zimmerman is 4-for-23 with a homer and seven strikeouts.
Jackson is 3-3 with a 4.86 ERA in his past six starts, and the Nationals scored six, eight and eight runs while he was in the game in his three wins in that period.
Against the Braves, he’s 0-1 with a 3.32 ERA in three starts, with 19 strikeouts and seven walks in 19 innings. He started against them once in each of the past three seasons, and also faced them in two relief appearances in 2006.
Michael Bourn is 5-for-12 against Jackson, while Juan Francisco is 3-for-6 against him, and Brian McCann is 3-for-8 with a homer. Dan Uggla is 0-for-13 with six strikeouts and Chipper Jones is 1-for-7 against Jackson.
Francisco is in the lineup today in place of Jones, which might have had a little to do with the matchup but was primarily because Chipper getting a scheduled rest (hey, big game or not, the afternoon start after a night game is getting tougher and tougher on those 40-year-old legs and surgically scarred knees).
And just so you know, Fredi Gonzalez also said he might rest Chipper on Monday, after the Braves play an ESPN-mandate 8 p.m. game in Atlanta and arrive – barring rain delays, etc. – in Miami at around 2 or 2:30 a.m. Monday.
Let’s close with a tune by the inimitable and underrated Mark Lanegan, which you can hear by clicking here.

“CAN’T COME DOWN” by Mark Lanegan
Don’t give a damn for money
Never did I give a damn for gold
Tell me little doll, talk some sweet nothing
A river runs deep and cold
Don’t know why but it keeps running
Don’t know why I can’t come down
Moses has stood on the mountain
Devil made it thunder and rain
Girl, I ain’t afraid of temptation
No, I ain’t afraid of some pain
Watchin’ little doll she just come runnin’
Running straight away
Straight to me I got sweet nothing
And only myself to blame
I don’t know why I just keep running
Don’t know why I can’t come down
Walk, don’t you walk on me
Don’t you step, don’t you step on me
Don’t you walk, don’t walk on me
Don’t you step on me
Don’t have no thing for money
Got no jones for gold
All I got today is some sweet nothing
Nothing to take away
Don’t know why I just keep running
Don’t know why I can’t come down
Don’t know why, somebody
Somebody hears today
Don’t know why, sweet nothing
Nothing to take away
No, I ain’t afraid of temptation
No, I ain’t afraid of some pain
No, I ain’t afraid of some pain
Somebody, somebody
Somebody, can’t come down
Somebody, can’t come down
Can’t come down
Somebody, can’t come down
Can’t come down
Cannot come down
Don’t know why I can’t come down
Ain’t afraid of no pain

Im my opinion you gotta make em throw some strikes, he walked Prado on 5 pitches and missed badly on his last pitch. Go up there and work the count a little. Let the pitcher get himself into trouble.

Consider this: If the Braves would have been out of the race at the trade deadline, we probably would have traded Tommy Hanson, Michael Bourn and maybe even Tim Hudson. We could have gotten some amazing talent in return and would have been in a GREAT situation going ino next year. I’m sure Bourn will walk…Few will want Hanson an we will keep Hudson. Of course, keeping Hudson is not bad, its just that we could have gotten some serious talent. Our starting rotation next year would have been
Medlen
Minor
Hudson
Maholm
Sheets/Teahran

This team is one of the best in baseball, current slump, or not. The Braves are a middle payroll franchise, and until that changes, we can’t just “punt” on a season, because we are not THE BEST team in baseball.
This is the best team we’ve had in a while and we have a puncher’s chance to win the WS. Why think it would be better to keep kicking the can down the road? We needed to go for it this year.

We didn’t give up a “bunch of talent” for Bourn last season, when he had a full year left on his contract.
If he (and the team) had performed “like this” in the first half of the season, then he likely wouldn’t have netted us that much in trade.
Hanson can’t be worth too awful much in trade either. He doesn’t look good.
Hudson might net a decent return. But would it really be guys who would step in and make a solid contribution next year? If so, why would a contender trade them for

Trade him, demoted him, dfa him, just get that worthless waste of space off this team. Hopefully after this latest collapse, we will get a real coaching staff with some real results. Van Cletus,
Braves have the 4th best record in the NL. If that doesn’t qualify them as one of the best, then it at least qualifies them as one of the “better” teams. Performance over the past week is not very good, but over the course of the season, it’s been very solid.
We have a good handful of guys who could get hot again. This is a slump. It happens. If it happens for two more weeks, I won’t call them one of the best, or better teams in baseball.
Right now, it’s a short-term slump that happens to lots of teams. With the current payroll limitations in place, it is unlikely that the Braves ever build another true juggernaut with no holes. Nonetheless, they’ve got a team that should make the play-offs and will have a chance at a title. Wishing that they would’ve dumped talent and to push for the future is silly.
The Braves will have plenty of seasons going forward that will be down, struggling to play .500 ball. This was not the year to look to the future. They needed to try and win now. This is arguably the best team they’ve had since 2003.

I wasn’t suggesting that, just saying that it limits the Braves from ever getting creative with McCann. Cause 1st base would be the only other likely position he’ll ever play and with Freeman we can’t afford to do it.
McCann’s injuries are starting to add up and 2013 look to be his last season likely unless he completely bounces back health and performance wise.

Jackon a sore loser whining about 1st base call. I mean Fox was praising this guy like he was some military hero but look at what a jerk he is looking back at the first base umpire. I mean hey make the pitch to Heyward and get him out. Don’t go mumbling as if you are the next great thing. Edwin Jackson is a medicore pitcher and he is bad mouthing as if he is a top of line pitcher. Fact he he would have given up runs anyways. Guy is a 5th starter with the Nationals. There are signs he is breaking down now — I get that some do not want to overextend him given the yr he has had this yr and his injury plagued finish last yr.
But where is the alternative — will probably settle for some journeyman catcher cause I doubt Bethancourt is any more than a BU catcher. He is not a stud prospect, maybe not even a starter.
I am curious to what Prado will ask for and be worth when its his time to hit the FA mkt. There are so many plusses with his versitility and all around solid game.

They are in a downsizing mode though its hard to guage who is in charge up there.
Their biggest need is a new manager and pitching coach. And who is going to make the baseball decisions — Is it gonna be Ben Cherington or is Larry Lucchino going to be a medler.
If Lucchino/Valentine win the power struggle that org is a dysfunctional mess for some time.

Half Empty…..pissing off Hudson has nothing to do with it. Hudson is getting old….plus he’s having a hard time getting deep into games.
Take a pay cut..or go to another team. The Braves cannot afford to risk re-signing Hudson….only to see him break down or turn into Derek Lowe.
Huddy is a winner that gave the Braves a bigtime hometown discount,Even if He isn’t a no.1 anymore. At 9 mil a year he is a good value.

Digusted, while Maholm may seem like a bargain at $6.5 mil…..the fact remains is that he isnt that good. A cheaper version of Derek Lowe. I’d rather see the Braves throw the fraud Julio Teheran out there (at least he’ll be $6 mil a year cheaper to watch get lit up).
@Cletus — I would rather have an unproven young guy like Julio come into ST and battle and work his way into a spot.
Having a vet like PM is insurance in case Julio is indeed another overhyped prospect.
With what some vet pitchers have gotten in recent yrs, (like Brad Penny, Oliver Perez) for 1 yr PM might not be all that good, but is better than some guys who you would sign for one yr at 6.5 mil

Excellent reporting in the humorous clubhouse banter, David.
Great come-from-behind victory for the Braves today! Heyward is certainly hitting clutch and then Simmons took one for the team. Kimbrel got totally squeezed by the umpire, then got victimized by a throwing error putting a runner at third with two outs, but he recovered to strikeout the side and earn the save.
Braves can now go for the sweep against the Nationals, and have certainly further solidified their hold on the home Wild Card.

Two results here….
1) Hanson is a wussie. But he’s doing JUST enough to keep his trade value up. Looks like a Viking, so maybe Target Field would be a good landing spot — nice and spacious and he would hardly ever have to bat.
2) Braves are doing JUST enough to peel off some confidence from the cocky Nats. A win tomorrow might do wonders. Braves need to come out breathing fire tomorrow and Gonzalez needs to turn this team loose emotionally.

Looking at the schedule after tomorrow we have 3 vs Miami 3 vs Phillies 3 vs Miami 3 vs Mets 3 vs Pirates. Lets assume we take 5 out of 6 from Miami 2 out of 3 from Phillies 2 out of 3 from Mets and 2 out of 3 from Pirates we would be 11-4
Nationals have a tough schedule as they will be facing all the teams that are in the hunt.
3 vs LA 4 vs Mil 3vs Phil 3vs Stl 3 vs Phil
Lets say LA wins 2 out of 3 and then Milwaukee wins 2 out of 4 Stl wins 2 out of 3 and Philly win 4 out of 6 this would put Nationals at 7-9. We would fall short by a game.
A win tomorrow will definately make things interesting and they dont have Strausberg any more. We have a shot if we win tomorrow.

Division is out of reach – but you have to imagine that taking these two games has been a huge confidence boost for the Braves. The thing that works in our favour is every team the Nationals play will be playing a do or die game. They got the Dodgers for next 3. Dodgers know they have to win every game they can and then after that a 4 game set with Brewers. Brewers who will probably be clinging onto their lives they will try and do whatever they can to win and then Phillies with that rotation facing Nats 6 times?
I think it is possible. We can start dreaming about the division if we win TMR.

BTW, good win again tonight. Every win puts the Braves closer and closer to at least getting IN to the play-offs. That’s pretty much all you can ask.
That said, while the probability is low, the possibility is still there for the Braves to win the division. The Nationals still have tomorrow’s game against the Braves, then 3 games against a capable Dodgers team, 3 against a hot Brewers team, and a capable Phillies team. In that same span (after tomorrow’s game), Braves have 6 against the Marlins and 3 also against the Phillies. If the Brave are going to do it…the next 10 games is where it is going to happen.

For 2013 Brave player contracts, you must realize that McCann is really hurt (shoulder, leg , etc.) and he is giving everything he can because the Braves need him. Otherwise he would be shut down for the season. If you think there is any doubt the Braves do no exercise his option for $12m, you’re ignorant. Who the f is going to catch if not BMac? Now, 2014 is another matter, as the need to see how Bethancourt recovers from his injury an how he progresses in AA and AAA next year.
The Braves will also either exercise Huddy’s$9m option or do a 2yr deal for say $12m. They will also exercise the $6.5m doption for Maholm, even if the deal him.

Angels wasted a marvelous start by Zack Greinke, he went 8.1 Innings, allowing just 5 hits and 1 ER. Walked 2, K’d 3 on 109 pitches. Ernesto Frieri (acting closer) gave up back-to-back jacks (2-run HR, and a solo shot) to lose the game. They really need a closer.
Jon Heyman @JonHeymanCBS
#angels erred by never getting a proven closer (not counting izzy). may cost them. killer loss tonite.
Greinke personally did not allow a run today though. They tried to get him through the complete game, and it backfired.

In 10 starts as an Angel, Greinke has the following line: 69 IP, 62 hits, 29 ER, 9 HR allowed, 22/54 BB/K ratio, 3.78 ERA.
In his last 5 starts: 37 IP, 24 hits, 7 ER, 9 BB’s, 26 K’s, 4 HR, 1.70 ERA, .185/.236/.308 oppo. slash line.

Don’t really care whether it’s by accident or design, I’ll take MEDLEN right now, every time out. If all the pitchers had his attitude combined with his ability, the other guys would perk up. When KRIS is on the bump, the whole team is high on MEDS. HEH!
The other guy’s I see with that will to win on the mound for the BRAVES are TIM HUDSON and BRANDON BEACHY. DELGADO maybe.
We were lucky to win yesterday. And the will to win?
HANSON gets the start, and it’s KEYSTONE KOPS out there in the field not the least of which was TOMMY himself. Even after the second, we were dropping flies and balls at the plate. I’m a believer in the energy exuded by the starting pitcher catching on with the entire club.
I would think that after the past two games anyone who wants to could see the difference attitude makes in a club.

Great game yesterday! Wow, i didn’t think the highlight of my sports day would’ve been the Braves game, but they beat the Nat’s twice in a row! The UT-FL game was garbage last night. Thought this was going to be our year to break the losing streak, but oh, well. I’m really dreading when UT comes to play “between the hedges.”
It was good to see the Braves win in a playoff-style environment, and against an elite team. They’ve found ways to win the last two days, and it’s refreshing. Maybe, just maybe, this team’s really going to get hot down the stretch and into the playoffs.

@TOBF at 10:36 p,m, That pretty much sums up the way most metro Atlantans feel about Bobby Pincchio.
In a roundabout way, I do think Petrino did us a favor walking away from the Falcons — as it turned out we would up smelling like a rose getting Coach Mike Smith. I know he was classless, but so what, Petrino only messed up the Falcons brand for one yr and we have not had a losing seson since.

Lets say LA wins 2 out of 3 and then Milwaukee wins 2 out of 4 Stl wins 2 out of 3 and Philly win 4 out of 6 this would put Nationals at 7-9. We would fall short by a game. _ Veer

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com surveyed four MLB execs about B.J. Upton’s free agent outlook, and their estimates varied greatly. A National League GM predicted sees a three-year, $27MM deal for Upton while the other estimates ranged from four years at $50MM to five years at $70MM. The Rangers, Nationals, Phillies, Braves, Red Sox, Yankees, Reds, Giants, and Cubs are among the teams that could be in need of outfield help this winter.
At the age of 28, B.J. Upton will be the youngest outfielder on the open market this winter. Rosenthal believes that Upton figures to land a deal of at least five years and virtually every NL East team could pursue him.

You would think that Delgado and Teheran would both be ready to take a spot in the rotation by now.
What’s it been, 2 years going on 3 of them being “untouchable” stars? Though I think Delgado is gone this winter… Teheran gets another year in AAA to “redeem” himself. Gilmartin, Graham, Spruill will be on their way by 2014, so Teheran needs to get it together fast!

No Minor? Second half turn-around not enough to keep him around? Right off the bat, I’d prefer to keep Minor since he’s proved over an extended period of time now this year that he can succeed against Major League hitting. I’d also like to keep him because he’s another lefty.
The Braves do have some things to consider for next year with so many starting pitchers and only 5 spots.

@USNavy –
It does count but it did not last. The next two yrs they went back to 5-11 and 4-12.
They also had one good yr under Glanville but that too did not last.
And with Leeman Bennett there was moderate success but the record was up and down

Despite what many here may think, GREG WALKER has really done an excellent job at instilling patience and discipline at the plate. Our miserable BA with RISP is hopefully part of the learning process transitioning from the free-wheeling strike-out artists of earlier seasons, to the leading team in the M.L. in walks. Only slightly above the ML team average [1086] in SO’s [1127], but far above MLB average [439] in BB’s [514]. Next closest TAMPA BAY [500]. If this progression continues to take hold, we should begin to see SO’s decline , BB hold steady, and hits with RISP increase.
By comparison here’s last year: 2011….1260 SO….504 BB; 162 G

Out of those 9 guys there is a 100% chance 1 is traded, possibly even 2. Of course Hanson is at the top of likely to be traded list with Delgado behind him, and still have Maholm’s option which isn’t a lock to be picked up IMO. If the Braves feel they can add a frontline starter they might need that extra 6.5 million that Maholm would be making.

I see UGGLA trying to transition to GREG WALKER’s style of hitting. Walks way, way up, opposite field hits up, like the one yesterday to right-center, but power way,way down, average as well, and SO’s about the same as 2011 with 16 games to go.
Can’t say DAN is a hard-head though. He’s making an honest effort to improve in my book.
Unfortunately, at this point, I don’t know if 86 BB and spray hitting offsets 18 HR’s and a miserable .213 BA. OPS+ below 100 for the first time ever, and last year was his previous all-time low at 107. Might be better if we just let UGGS be the free-swinger that he is, and continue to bank on him being a high-risk, high-reward hitter.

Uggla needs to be the big classic slugger. We already have good OBP guys throughout the lineup. Uggla is paid to be a power hitting run producer. I’m just saying I rather see him produce a 2011 stat line instead of what he’s done this season.

As a veteran lefty, I’d say that at the very least, the Braves would pick up his option and use him as a trade piece if they didn’t see him in the rotation next year. Though, as a veteran lefty (3/4 guy), he may just end up in the rotation at what is considered a pretty fair rate these days.
My WAY to early guess for next year:
Hudson
Medlen
Maholm
Minor
Delgado or Hanson, depending on trades (Replaced by Beachy late in the year, so, I think I’d trade Hanson.)

Players have different strengths and different weaknesses and you can’t expect the same from everyone. Uggla is a power hitter and that entails not always being a high OBP player or a high batting average player – they are there to provide power.
It would be great to have a lineup full of .300, .375, .450 players on your team, but it’s also improactical, overly expensive and even if you COULD compile a lineup of such paraons, s likely someone would have an off year and mess up your well thought out plans and defeat your endless budget.

I think Braves cant trade Hanson. They have a high risk rotation as you put it. Tim is getting old and you are penciling down 3 Tommy John arms (Tim, Kris, Brandon). I would be very careful.
Plus Minor and Randall are not fully proven…….Minor has been great, but he is just getting used to the workload of MLB.
Id keep all the help I could from our current pitching staff but Jair. Or even keep jair and trade him as soon as he puts some good numbers for 4-5 straight starts.

Hudson’s been back a couple of successful seasonsince his TJ surgery. Medlen has had more than enough time since his to be fully recovered and the results are telling us that there are noarm problems. Beachy won’t even be vaguely ready until mid season and to expect anything significant from him until 2014 is wishful thinking anyway. So not sure what having three TJ surgery survivors in the roatation adversely affects us.
More to the point – Hudson has ankle issues that are more concerning, Medlen can’t possibly keep up this leve of dominance and Beachy – as already mentioned hould be a footnote to next year’s Braves rotation.

Good points from both. I’m still more inclined to agree with semi on th is one. Sometimes some guys just give you a different feel than others and I just don’t get a good feel from Hanson when he’s on the mound. he gets run all over because he’s so slow (I think that might even affect the defense). I could live with it if he was a power, stike-out pitcher, but he’s not. I think those 12 wins look a lot better than he’s really pitched and I’d use that to my advantage it I were deciding whether or not to trade him… .270BAA, a 1.45 WHIP, a single might as well be a double with his delivery to the plate, and pitching just over 5 innings on average…. He’s my guy to trade.

Who would have thought….the World’s hottest cheerleaders would be at Oregon and USC? These fine young ladies are just great–I would love to go out there for a USC game someday.
Our Braves’ game results have been uplifting….got a few back at home and made this weekend’s Bar-B-Que taste smokier and sweeter….even the fried corn was exemplary……the bisquits?……oow wee! Ranger XP 900….let’s git it boys…..yeah.
Now then, I see us lining up tonight on the ‘big stage,’ ESPN with a chance to sweep the division foes we have been looking up to most of the season. It almost feels weird to say that, and that’s not because I doubt we can…it’s just that, as many know, we haven’t been impressive offensively for quite a while–the Braves have won a good bunch but not in fan preferred fashion. Does the fan really influence much of anything? Are we more than a pair of hands and a loud vocal instrument? ESPN Insider FanGraphs Braves have the Arms to Beat the Nats in Postseason
You may have heard the Washington Nationals are suddenly without their ace as the playoffs approach. Stephen Strasburg, like it or not, will not pitch again this season.
But even without their ace, the Nationals still feature Gio Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann, Edwin Jackson, Ross Detwiler and John Lannan, which is nothing to shake a stick at. By FanGraphs WAR, Gonzalez is second only to Clayton Kershaw this season in the NL, meaning there are 14 other teams in the National League that would love to have the “problem” the Nationals have, of having Gonzalez atop the rotation. But Tommy John surgery, and its subsequent innings limit for Strasburg, still weakened the Nats’ rotation by depriving them of their ace.
The Braves have a young sensation in Kris Medlen who also had Tommy John surgery in 2010. But the Braves handled Medlen differently than Washington handled Strasburg — Medlen began the season in the bullpen to keep his innings total down — and now they’re reaping the benefits late in the season, and Medlen’s recent run has helped the Braves put up the best ERA in the NL during the past month.
While Washington still has the better rotation and plenty of pitching, even without Strasburg, to win in the posteason, the Braves have enough arms to beat the Nationals should the two teams meet in October.
Medlen joins Mike Minor to solidify the back end of an Atlanta rotation fronted by Tim Hudson, Tommy Hanson and newcomer Paul Maholm, a group that is surging at the right time of the season. In the past month, Medlen has a 0.46 ERA, Minor has a 2.30, and the Braves’ rotation ERA of 3.22 beats Washington’s 3.36.
If we use fielding independent pitching (FIP) instead of ERA, however, we get a slightly different story. The Nationals have struck out 8.39 batters per nine in the past month, second only to the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL, and walked 2.67 batters per nine, good for fifth in the NL. The Braves (7.38 and 3.15, respectively) have not had not been as good as the Nationals in those categories and have also benefitted from a better batting average on balls in play (.281 to Washington’s .293), where their MLB-leading 8.0 UZR/150 has helped. Therefore their 3.64 FIP is not as sterling as the Nationals’ 3.33 number.
We also have to account for Medlen’s historic run. While he certainly could continue to pitch well through throughout the rest of the season and the postseason, it’s unlikely he can sustain his recent numbers. So if we’re comparing Atlanta’s rotation and the Strasburg-less Nationals’ staff, Washington would be ahead in the aggregate.
But playoff series are not played in the aggregate. They depend on matchups and depth, and even a rough head-to-head comparison of the staffs shows that Atlanta has enough of the latter to compete in a short series.
Hudson, even though he’s getting a little older, is still a fine pitcher and capable of leading a postseason rotation. He’d likely matchup against Gonzalez. In the past three seasons combined, Hudson’s 3.19 ERA is nearly equal to Gonzalez’s number 3.10. Hudson’s number is built mostly on his ground-ball rate (59.1 percent since the beginning of 2010, best in MLB), while Gonzalez strikes out more batters (8.6 K/9 compared to Hudson’s 5.83). There’s no question Gonzalez is better today than Hudson, but Hudson has proven he still has plenty left.
After those two, the matchups could go any number of ways, but let’s take a brief look at pitchers individually. Zimmermann would likely pitch Game 2 of a series for the Nats, and he’s posted a 3.24 ERA in the past three years (while missing some time for Tommy John surgery) and seems to be trending upward. Edwin Jackson could follow Zimmermann, and he’s posted a 3.89 ERA this season. If Washington doesn’t want to go with three righties in a row, it could pitch Detwiler, who has a 3.16 ERA and 3.75 FIP in 30 games (24 starts) this year, third.
Atlanta could go with Medlen — who has better strikeout (7.85 K/9 to 6.98), walk (1.62 BB/9 to 1.88), ground ball (52.8 percent to 43.4 percent) and swinging-strike (9.7 percent to 8.5 percent) rates than Zimmermann, although Medlen has spent a good chunk of 2012 in the bullpen — second behind Hudson, or it could choose Maholm, who the Braves traded for at the deadline for this specific instance. Hanson has struggled this season (4.33 ERA in 158 innings) but has the stuff to shut down any lineup. Then there’s Minor, who has a 2.35 ERA with 54 strikeouts and 13 walks in 69 innings since the All-Star break.
We still can’t say that the Braves have a better rotation than the Nationals, whose starters have combined to be the best in the NL all year and appear to have enough weaponry to thrive without Strasburg. But again, it’s no longer about “all year.”
If these two teams face each other in October, Strasburg will still be gone, Medlen may still be on this crazy streak of superb starts, and we all know what can happen in a playoff series. A couple great starts from a Braves staff capable of producing them, and suddenly the best rotation in the NL is preparing for next spring.

Here’s something Davey Johnson was quoted as saying. I’ve never thought about the effect a pitcher could have on hitters for subsequent games. But, it makes sense.
Before the Braves series, Espinosa had hit .300/.364/.500 in his previous 36 games. Nationals Manager Davey Johnson feels the combination of missing two days, then facing a crafty pitcher like Kris Melden on Friday, may have thrown Espinosa off.
“He was really in a good place,” Johnson said. “Medlen maybe got him a little confused or something, because he made good pitches on him. But his timing’s gotten a little off. He’ll be all right.”

well Mac, so much of it is about confidence as a hitter, if you lose it for a while for whatever reason, it can snowball.
Meds easily mighta been a part of the problem, but prolly more of it was that he was just due to cool off after a hot streak

Braves could be one of those teams that wins it all and everybody still says at the end they weren’t even close to the best team in baseball. That’s definitely cool with me because sometimes it’s all about hot streaks in the postseason like with the Cardinals last year.

#5 for a contender? I think he’s a #5 for a re-building team….
Can you please name me some #5’s for contenders? Honestly, TOBF, I have to say that you know very little of what you are talking about when it come to Hanson, man. If he’s close to healthy(back, understand that his shoulder is less than perfect), he’s a solid mid-rotation-back-rotation starter.

Regarding Sept 28 game vs. NY Mets. Perhaps Freddi Gonzales worst move yet as a manager. Braves leading 1-0 in the 7th with Hudson running out of gas. Leaves him in with runners on first and third, rather than bringing in either Venters or O’Flaherty to face Lucas Duda – a big powerful left hand hitter. End result. HR and Braves lose 3-1
