navyvol- Nope – Went to Mercer and UGA for grad school. I’m a true blue Dawg, but would love to see Mercer turn into a footballpowerhouse – might take a few years since this is their first year playing football after a 70 something year layoff.
It’s the Phillies that are scary right now. Victorino and Pence gone. Rollis and Howard with almost sub ground level performances and they’re still winning – and it’s more than just the three starters, too. Not sure how or why, but they’ve gotten themselves back to .500, Quite a comeback.
Yet another reason why the Angels will lock up Greinke.
Agreed. I think they’ll end up declining the option on Haren and signing Greinke. Weaver, Greinke, Wilson all making 17 million per year+. They’ve done a horrible job at developing pitchers in recent years.
Phillies are 3 games back with 16 to play. Definitely in it. But it’s still going to take a lot for them to even force a one game playoff. They’ll still be at least 3 back with 15 to play regardless of the outcome of today’s games.
Chase Utley still doing work at 3rd base in warmups. Given the weak market for 3rd baseman, decent chance he is the Phillies 3rd baseman in 2013. A lot more 2nd baseman out there in the trade market than 3rd baseman – which has become one of the weakest positions in the sport, both in the majors and minors.
Looking at the schedule after tomorrow we have 3 vs Miami 3 vs Phillies 3 vs Miami 3 vs Mets 3 vs Pirates. Lets assume we take 5 out of 6 from Miami 2 out of 3 from Phillies 2 out of 3 from Mets and 2 out of 3 from Pirates we would be 11-4 ………………….
Lets say LA wins 2 out of 3 and then Milwaukee wins 2 out of 4 Stl wins 2 out of 3 and Philly win 4 out of 6 this would put Nationals at 7-9. We would fall short by a game. _ Veer
One game. That would make for some interesting reading here for the next year, or ten.
Definitely not keep both. I want to see some sort of an upgrade in the rotation for 2013. Trading away Hanson and going after a frontline starter.
I like Haren a lot, but I just worry about his back issue. Velocity and command down this year because of it. He’d be a great guy to stick at the front of the rotation with Hudson and Meds.
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com surveyed four MLB execs about B.J. Upton’s free agent outlook, and their estimates varied greatly. A National League GM predicted sees a three-year, $27MM deal for Upton while the other estimates ranged from four years at $50MM to five years at $70MM. The Rangers, Nationals, Phillies, Braves, Red Sox, Yankees, Reds, Giants, and Cubs are among the teams that could be in need of outfield help this winter.
At the age of 28, B.J. Upton will be the youngest outfielder on the open market this winter. Rosenthal believes that Upton figures to land a deal of at least five years and virtually every NL East team could pursue him.
And since I believe that he’s a #5 for a re-building team, I doubt that we could get Jay or Bourjos for him… no reason for the Angels/Cards to get him…
You would think that Delgado and Teheran would both be ready to take a spot in the rotation by now.
Hudson
Medlen
Maholm
Delgado
Teheran
with Beachy returning later and possibly Gilmartin ready to contribute at some point too. I just feel the value that we slapped on Delgado and Julio over the past few years that it is now time to contribute in the bigs. I agree we could use a good starter at the top of the rotation, but we have needs in CF and LF, we have concerns about McCann and Uggla going forward. No more Chipper, No more Bourn. Were losing alot across the board.
On Grienke, it makes a hundred percent sense for the LAA to take care of him and keep him long term.
@TOBF — I am not so sure that Jon Jay is the type of player I want for CF, want a better ballplayer. Not excited about Bourjos either though Bourjos does have a little pop.
If it were one or the other I’d take Bourjos. Jay is more like a 4th OF.
You would think that Delgado and Teheran would both be ready to take a spot in the rotation by now.
What’s it been, 2 years going on 3 of them being “untouchable” stars? Though I think Delgado is gone this winter… Teheran gets another year in AAA to “redeem” himself. Gilmartin, Graham, Spruill will be on their way by 2014, so Teheran needs to get it together fast!
No Minor? Second half turn-around not enough to keep him around? Right off the bat, I’d prefer to keep Minor since he’s proved over an extended period of time now this year that he can succeed against Major League hitting. I’d also like to keep him because he’s another lefty.
The Braves do have some things to consider for next year with so many starting pitchers and only 5 spots.

Yeah they do. But what’s funny is, there was a lot of discussion here last off season about the Braves hiving so much pitching, and yet they ended up picking up a guy from the repair shop and trading for another.
Guys like Teheran Delgado are good for hype. Hype them and then trade them. Rip some team off.
That is easier said then done Veer — just depends on how other teams are perceiving those guys. Maybe they see them as overhyped too.
I would trade Teheran for a decent offer, I like Delgado. Liked what I did see for a kid his age. I do think Teheran was overhyped and other teams have been scouting him too, so it will be easier said than done.
Strangely enough, veer actually has a point here – It HAS been the off the radar players that have impressed and the top pitching prospects haven’t succeeded nearly as much. Makes one wonder how hype truly effects players coming up.
Out of those 9 guys there is a 100% chance 1 is traded, possibly even 2. Of course Hanson is at the top of likely to be traded list with Delgado behind him, and still have Maholm’s option which isn’t a lock to be picked up IMO. If the Braves feel they can add a frontline starter they might need that extra 6.5 million that Maholm would be making.
I see UGGLA trying to transition to GREG WALKER’s style of hitting. Walks way, way up, opposite field hits up, like the one yesterday to right-center, but power way,way down, average as well, and SO’s about the same as 2011 with 16 games to go.
Can’t say DAN is a hard-head though. He’s making an honest effort to improve in my book.
Unfortunately, at this point, I don’t know if 86 BB and spray hitting offsets 18 HR’s and a miserable .213 BA. OPS+ below 100 for the first time ever, and last year was his previous all-time low at 107. Might be better if we just let UGGS be the free-swinger that he is, and continue to bank on him being a high-risk, high-reward hitter.
Uggla needs to be the big classic slugger. We already have good OBP guys throughout the lineup. Uggla is paid to be a power hitting run producer. I’m just saying I rather see him produce a 2011 stat line instead of what he’s done this season.
As a veteran lefty, I’d say that at the very least, the Braves would pick up his option and use him as a trade piece if they didn’t see him in the rotation next year. Though, as a veteran lefty (3/4 guy), he may just end up in the rotation at what is considered a pretty fair rate these days.
My WAY to early guess for next year:
Hudson
Medlen
Maholm
Minor
Delgado or Hanson, depending on trades (Replaced by Beachy late in the year, so, I think I’d trade Hanson.)
Players have different strengths and different weaknesses and you can’t expect the same from everyone. Uggla is a power hitter and that entails not always being a high OBP player or a high batting average player – they are there to provide power.
It would be great to have a lineup full of .300, .375, .450 players on your team, but it’s also improactical, overly expensive and even if you COULD compile a lineup of such paraons, s likely someone would have an off year and mess up your well thought out plans and defeat your endless budget.
As Braves fans we would love to see them catch Nationals. If, however, you take a step back and look at baseball as a whole, I think it’s great to see Baltimore, Oakland, and Washington positioning themselves to get in to the play-offs–diversity in the play-offs from year to year can only improve interest in the sport. The Nationals’ magic number to clinch a play-off spot of some kind is only 4…
I think Braves cant trade Hanson. They have a high risk rotation as you put it. Tim is getting old and you are penciling down 3 Tommy John arms (Tim, Kris, Brandon). I would be very careful.
Plus Minor and Randall are not fully proven…….Minor has been great, but he is just getting used to the workload of MLB.
Id keep all the help I could from our current pitching staff but Jair. Or even keep jair and trade him as soon as he puts some good numbers for 4-5 straight starts.
the bad thing for hanson is that he pitches behind medlin in the rotation and we see how comparatively weak he is
medlin has same velocity and wins…hanson can’t even field bunts, which has cost hom runs in his last 2 outings…the braves don’t even appear to be the same team when hanson pitches
Hudson’s been back a couple of successful seasonsince his TJ surgery. Medlen has had more than enough time since his to be fully recovered and the results are telling us that there are noarm problems. Beachy won’t even be vaguely ready until mid season and to expect anything significant from him until 2014 is wishful thinking anyway. So not sure what having three TJ surgery survivors in the roatation adversely affects us.
More to the point – Hudson has ankle issues that are more concerning, Medlen can’t possibly keep up this leve of dominance and Beachy – as already mentioned hould be a footnote to next year’s Braves rotation.
Good points from both. I’m still more inclined to agree with semi on th is one. Sometimes some guys just give you a different feel than others and I just don’t get a good feel from Hanson when he’s on the mound. he gets run all over because he’s so slow (I think that might even affect the defense). I could live with it if he was a power, stike-out pitcher, but he’s not. I think those 12 wins look a lot better than he’s really pitched and I’d use that to my advantage it I were deciding whether or not to trade him… .270BAA, a 1.45 WHIP, a single might as well be a double with his delivery to the plate, and pitching just over 5 innings on average…. He’s my guy to trade.
Hudson is a better option than Hanson next year. Hanson has a huge falloff in the second half every year. His velocity continues to drop. He looks like Jurrjens 2.0.
Something also interesting about Hanson… with 17 3-0 counts this year, he has gotten exactly 0 outs….17 BBs have been the result. With 36 3-1 counts, 22 BBs. If he gets behind a guy… basically might as well waggle 4 fingers is what this tells me.

CF Bourn
LF Johnson
3B Prado
RF Jason
1B Freeman
2B Uggla

SS Simmons
P Medlen + Huddy + Maholm + Minor + Hanson
Sheets might be gone. JJ should be traded. Once Beachy is ready, Im sure somebody will be injured, as always……injuries happen. Teheran has not shown he is ready. Randall should be kept around.

OH NO! You are not going to work tonights game. Yet another day off. GOOD GRIEF you worked two days in a row and we won both games, now you take tonight off and we will lose.
Napoli might get a pretty nice payday… his numbers this year have been bad though. He was trying to get a Miguel Montero-like contract this offseason. Starting catcher money. Think he’s out of the Braves price-range, unless we’re giving up on Mac for 2014.
At the age of 28, B.J. Upton will be the youngest outfielder on the open market this winter. Rosenthal believes that Upton figures to land a deal of at least five years and virtually every NL East team could pursue him..TOBF
you left off all the negative stuff they had to say about him….
We have done that before. JJ is a good pitcher with injuries. Im sure he will find his health in the winter as braves have shut him down already.
Remember………is not easy to find good pitchers. The league knows JJ is a very good pitcher. Maybe in the wrong place and maybe with the wrong pitching coach……… There will be a team interested in him.
Jurrjens is done. No team will be interested in Jurrjens with his ARB 3 salary included. Of course as a free agent he would likely get a minor league deal.
just like the last two winters, nobody is likely to offer much of anything at all for JJ with his poor success and related health problems. Best scenario, we get to throw him into a multi-player trade as fodder
BillShanks @BillShanks
RT @bizarrodaddy: @BillShanks Who does Hudson have the best career numbers against possible opp? – 5.78 ERA vs. STL; 3.67 ERA vs. LAD
BillShanks @BillShanks
This year Hudson – 5 ER in 5.2 IP vs. STL. Didn’t pitch vs. LAD. 5.32 ERA vs. PHILY. Allowed 2 ER ini 5 IP vs. PIT & 4 ER in 6.2 IP vs. MIL
We’re more likely to get STL tho Huddy’s numbers this year aren’t all that great against the teams who most likely to get in
I even doubt that, the salary being the reason. Who is actually gonna gamble and pay Jurrjens 6-7 million in 2013 when he’s been complete crap since the 2nd half of 2011 plus has injury concerns and easily has seen everything decline.

LOL… They will not even take the chance of keeping Jurrjens with hope to trade him. They will gladly say good bye and remove 5.5 million off the books.

Hanson would have more trade value than Maholm.
Maholm would be a 1 year rental for 6.5 million. He is what he is.
Hanson has 3 years of control and has a estimated ARB1 salary of 3 million. Still young and has potential to be better than he’s been.

Heath,
I think Braves cant trade Hanson.
