uggla did get a run in, but the bad news is he had to hit into a DP to do it, but that’s ok, he’s back, and fredi is still ‘running him out there.’ Real smart move move fredi, to keep an all star second baseman in LF, a 315 hitting LF’er on the bench and running danny out there, because opposing pitchers really fear him, he’s ‘a game changer.’ uggla’s a game changer all right, nothing like hitting into a DP with the bases loaded to change the complexion of a game, or popping up to the infield with runners in scoring position to deflate a rally, If he were any less mobile at fielding his position, he could be replaced with an oak tree. Yet fredi will ‘run him out there,’ until the 7 game advantage in the wild card race is evaporated, just like 2011. Go Falcons, go Tech, go UGA, because fredi’s team is going nowhere.

“With a little more than three weeks left in his storied career, Chipper Jones has joined an elite group that previously only included Hall of Famers Stan Musial, Babe Ruth, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig.

The walk Jones drew to begin the fourth inning of Wednesday night’s game against the Brewers was the 1,500th of his career. This marked the last milestone that he had to hit to join these legends in this select group.

Musial, Ruth, Williams, Gehrig and Jones are the only players in Major League history to record at least 2,500 hits, 1,500 walks, 1,500 runs, 500 doubles, 450 home runs and 1,500 RBIs while hitting .300 with a .400 on-base percentage and .500 slugging percentage.

The Epic Collapse of the Atlanta Braves (PART II) is speeding up. When you have junk ball / gopher ball, pitcher, those 80’s mph guys, who pitch in the midle of the plate, and hang stuff, you get the Paul Maholm type, BLOW-UP pitcher. PAULIE is a re-cycled Cub, who has never pitched in a meaningful game before. We see what PAULIE does.
Wren gives the Braves his stand-by RE-TREADS…ball players, once good, now over the hill…He tried Livan…now there is Batista and Overbay. Sheets is another example. From Franki Wren, you get the same crap, different day. (See what Baltimore does, without Franki?)
Bourne has sucked at the plate for half a season…220 hitter, with ever icreasing strikeouts. Just what you need from a leadoff guy. BUT, just like Worthless Dan Uggla, and Brian McCa’t, Fredi keeps running him out there.
The rest of the offense (- Martin) is a choke job group of losers, with not a CLUTCH hitter among them. They struggle because there isn’t a stand up guy on the team. Fredi quotes that Bourny is now working with Walker, who “saw a couple things”…Bourny has sucked half a season, AND NOW Walker sees something. Fredi takes idiot to a new level, everytime he opens his mouth.
It’s now”down the stretch / choke time”, and for a second year running, the Braves show what they are made of. Quite a collection of choke job ball players. Being led by a Bozo doesn’t help, But Fredi’s good at it. He played a big part in last years EPIC COLLAPSE. THIS, we know Fredi can do. We watched it all last year.
Friday-Sunday will be anther sweep. Washington will have no mercy with losers. The Phils will do the same. In the next 9 games, the Braves will spit out 8 of them. It is who they are. Its how they are made. Losers find ways to lose. It’s what the Braves do, when its all on the line. They showed their metal in 2011. 2012 is a repeat. The saving grace, in 2012 will be the firing of Fredi G. (and hopfully Franki Wren).

No, Bill. Last year we would have lost 3 games in the standings. This year we didn’t. We still have a winning record in Sept I believe. Last year that wasn’t even possible at this point.

The loss still goes back to no offensive production. Outside of Heyward & Prado the Braves are slumping. You’ve got Freeman,Chipper,& Bourn with recent slump to go with Uggla & McCann that slumped all year and are STILL slumping. I’ve never seen a player like Uggla be allowed to keep his starting spot playing so awful all year. Sugar coat it if you want Fredi, but another epic collapse is staring you right in the face !

Hopefully the off day will clear those nightmares from last season out of these guys heads. Nats this weekend and Phillies next. At this point I’m not sure .500 ball is going to cut it the rest of the way, the Braves need to win all the remaining series this month so hopefully everything will be locked up prior to the last 3 games against the Pirates. It would be nice to be able to get the rotation set up the way you want it for that 1 game playoff and possible division series.

Willie Wilson is the ONLY player with at least 600 SBs who led the league in triples 5 times, won a Gold Glove, led the AL in batting once, runs once, steals once and hits once. And unlike the Braves third baseman, probably was charged with an error every time he made one.

The other half of Fredi’s big innining excuse is nine innings of pathetic hitting. This is not a championship team and may not get past the one- game playoff assuming they even get that far. There is a complacency that starts at the top with Fredi’s rationalization and defense of poor performance.

Pathetic series. Getting worse than better. No hits no playoffs. Going out and picking up cheap pitchers and players just won’t cut it. Most of the guys just doesn’t seem to have the heart to win. Look at Philly they really look like they want to win. Come on Braves get off your sorry ass and start playing and hitting like you are capable of. You are an embarrassment to your dedicated fans. Uggla- Consistently Bad- Primary cause of offensive woes this year

Yeah because 1 person is the entire offense.

The point isn’t about K’s for Uggla or Heyward, I perfectly understand that this day and age in the game a player with high HR totals is almost expected to have high K totals. Its all about the big fly for the big check.

A lead off man however should never be near the top of that list. Cut down on your swing, choke up on the bat, what ever you have to do to put the ball in play. The odds of getting on base with a K are about 1:1500.

As for the whole overall production thing.

Dr. Baseball, I try to be objective regarding Jones’ defense and while I agree with your sentinent, let’s be fair. He’s really only had 17 seasons at 3rd base where he would be considered for a GG. (he was in LF for two years when Castilla was manning the corner and he was brutal out there) but I get your point. Other than the bunt or swinging bunt – which he is excellent at playing – he has been awful on defense for his entire career. That he has only 11 errors this season with all the gifts (he was given aniother in the inning last night where he should have been charged two errors instead of one), don’t be surprised if he’s handed a Gold Glove as a going away present similar to the all-star appearance that wasn’t deserved.

I cant take it yall…FG is not managing these last several games in the mode I feel a mgr should be managing for the playoffs..He has no sense of when to pull a pitcher, he has become complacent, lazy, and apparently unconcerned about the team getting into the W. series. The other night when he brought in Kimbrell, I thought that was a perfect move and I thought he had seen the “light” of how important every game is at this point of the season….but against the brewers….he convinced me I was giving him too much credit…LOOK Dumb A##, it is time to play your best hitters, look at the stats Freddie and use them to your advantage..if you dont , YOU and the BRaves are DONE! Go Braves!

Given Maholm’s history against the Brewers and the right-handed preponderance in their lineup, should Fredi have taken a radical step and started Delgado in last night’s game? Would the blog applaud him for thinking out of the box even if the gambit did not work, or would he be criticizded for a dumbass move? If the gambit worked would Don give him a tip of the cap or tell us why it was a stupid move and only a lucky outcome?

Thinking back to last year, Delgado pitched the biggest game of the year for us (the first game in the final series against the Cardinals) and provided us with a two run lead going into the bottom of the 9th when Kimbrel blew his first save in 2 months. Had the Braves won that game, the momentum of the race would have changed, and even if the rest of the season played out exactly as it did, the Braves would have ended the season 1 game up on the Cards. Kimbrel and EOF were rested and the likes of Moylan, Gearin, and Avilan could get us through the 6th and 7th if necessary. He was not intimidated by the situation he faced. In the majority of his starts this year, Delgado pitched well enough to win, but got no run support. As usual, the bad starts are remembered on this blog more than the OK to good ones.

Are the Chipper farewell tributes becoming a distraction for both him and the team? Playing at home the next 6 games allows the focus to be entirely on baseball, and hopefully the team will look more focused on the field. If I were Fredi, I would start Johnson in place of Bourn in the first 2 games against the lefties (and Ross at C), then see who should stay in the lineup after that.

Dear Jim Powell,
I have to disagree with your assessment that this team never gives up of feels out of it. I see no enthusiasm, no drive, and no heart. On rare occasion that they come from behind, they actually show these things, but lately, they look lost. I know your a team broadcaster/commentator and cant sit up there bad mouthing your employer, but enough already. For the last several weeks when this team gets down by on or two runs, the game is pretty much over. The lack of offense is putting way to much pressure on the pitching to be perfect, and for nearly two weeks it was perfect. I still believe this team will make the playoffs, but I have serious doubts as to whether or not they can get past a one game playoff. The make mediocre pitchers look like Cy Young candidates, how are they going to fare against an actual quality pitcher? I have never been one of the guys to sit here and blame Fredi G, but I am starting to think there is a serious lack of leadership. He made a bold move when he sat Uggla, but two days later he is right back in there. Yes he has started hitting, but he is still trying to kill everything. I just cant understand how a team with the quality of players the Braves have continue to struggle offensively down the stretch for nearly three years in a row now. I am starting to believe it comes from management. Bobby Cox had a laid back patient attitude with his players, Fredi is of the same mold. Its not working. I love my team, but unless something drastic happens, I am afraid Chipper retires officially the day after the one game playoff. Geez I am such a debbie downer. Lets turn this thing around now and find a way to go all the way now, no time like the present to go on a run!

jim – I remember clearly that game with St. Louis. When the Braves blew the lead and lost the game, I felt this pit in my stomach that the Cardinals were going to be a threat. Along with the Yankees, the Cardinals have a rich championship history and have great fans. Never arouse a sleeping giant.

A person could complain all day about individual moves by Fredi, but the Braves failure to win that game contributed mightily to the outcome of last season. And, it was all about player execution. I am not blaming Kimbrel as he was running on fumes and the Cardinals simply executed a great comeback. A cynical fan could fault Fredi’s handling of the bullpen last year which indirectly led to Kimbrel’s late season fade. Maybe there is little bit of truth to that. However, Fredi had to use his bullpen alot last year as there were so many close games and the starters were not going very deep in games.

Using Delgado now would be a bold move, one which I would not be quick to criticise if it did not work out. He does show poise in difficult situations. I just fear that his effectiveness as a starter will fade as he resides on the bench the next couple of weeks. It is tough being a manager.

When something goes against this team it seems to create a snowball effect. Fredi seems to be thinking about something else because when Malholm gave up the hit and walk in the 5th there wasn’t much communication between Fredi or Roger about strategy to minimize the damage. You could tell Malholm was frustrated and Roger should have popped out of the dugout instead they wait thinking Malholm will induce a groundball leading to a double play. Roger you better let Fredi know you understand the personalities of your pitching staff. Oh maybe not. No captain to steer this stinken ship.

I thought Uggla was benched. Why are we seeing this instant out back in the lineup? This team NEVER puts up a fight. They lay down for a beating night after night. You can tell this team does not WANT to be in the playoffs. To them, it’s just more days they have to work.

When a team SWEEPS another team, it is a STATEMENT. It means our pitchers are better than yours, our hitters are better and our manager is better. It wasn’t a 1 game lucky outing. It was a series of games.The Brewers made this statement to the Braves.The Brewers are NOT currently a playoff team.

All the other playoff teams HEARD this statement LOUD and CLEAR.
The Braves are NOT a playoff caliber team.

CHOKE CHOKE SWEPT SWEPT All year long there has been no offense to speak of. Why in the world knowing that Mr. Wrenn didn’t do a thing in the off season. If he worries about pitching and stands with the same attitude this off season nothing is going to change.We need some newplayers in Atlanta but the bad thing about that is it will ruin their careers because once in Atlanta their bats become silent. I just think our players don’t have the stamina for the whole year.
