“Wren needs to get Jason locked up. Gonna be hard seeing the Braves keep him for another contract. The guy could easily be one of the best players in baseball in no time”

He could be, he also could turn into that injury prone player that he was all of last year.

Side note: I noticed Jason’s middle name changed on baseball-reference too? Strange.

LJ – I get a different package – The MLB Extra Innings package on cable through Comcast. I get all the games every day (unless Fox is broadcasting on Saturday), but only rarely are both team’s feeds on at any given time.

There really aren’t many going year to year and becoming free agents after six years. It’s rare now. And the elite players are being locked up. You don’t see free agents at 26 years old unless they are a Scott Boras client like Alex Rodriguez or Prince Fielder. I have a lot of confidence that Jason Heyward will come to some sort of an agreement with the Braves. Casey Close isn’t Scott Boras.

Do you think after the 2013 season would be the time to lock Freeman up? His contract would be a little less right? Certainly doesn’t have the overall tools of Heyward.

The Braves are a very boring team and its reflected in the way they are managed and the way they go about playing the game. They appear to have no sense of urgency. There is no underlying excitement to the team. They are very, very fortunate there is a wildcard(s) and that they are in contention for one of them..

The Marlins want a legitimate power bat at third base, especially if they open the season with Donovan Solano at second. Miami is expected to consider a variety of options for third base, Capozzi writes

Every team is looking for a long term answer at 3rd base. It’s insane. Just not a lot out there any longer and it’s why I want Prado at 3rd base. It’s why the Padres aren’t trading Chase Headley and why the Mets are going to give David Wright whatever he wants.

Honestly, Va, I’d look at extending Freeman at a lesser contract as well this winter. Braves have zero dollars after 2015 and only Uggla’s 13.2 in 2014 and 2015. They should be looking at locking their current players up.

Bat, we could add a few of the political analysts in that group also. I can’t watch any of the news channels anymore, bias is obvious.

What kills me is a lot of the media is so afraid of being called biased that they have outsourced fact checking. I’m with scoots on leaning one way or the other, but don’t tell me you’re a journalist if you’re not willing to take a stand on 2+2=4.

I mean I like reading opinion writers but I know they have an agenda. Doesn’t mean I can’t learn anything from them. I’ve read George Will over the years, the guy loves baseball, so even if he is a bit of a fashion prude (owns one pair of jeans, come on man) he can’t be all that bad. Still if I read one of his columns and end it thinking man this is some crazy stuff I know I need to check his facts because they are most likely misleading ones.

Shoot I loved Molly Ivans but didn’t think he was infallible. Still that woman could write. She wrote of Pat Buchanan’s 92 convention speech: “It probably sounded better in the original German.” Cracked me up

Yeah, but a kid in his 20s should never turn down the chance to make his first fortune. Seriously, at that age, you can buy all the toys and spend money until you’re sick of doing so, and let 40 years of compound interest turn the rest into real money.

Things go good, and you still have another chance at big paydays. Not so good, and you’re still able to take care of your great-grandchildren. There’s a sweet spot there for security/monetary return for the player and club control/outlay for the club, and both parties could find it if so inclined.

I would always advise a young player to take that kind of deal. Always.

I don’t have the answer of how this happens or how to cure it. But it HAS to represent a fundamental flaw in the team and organization that must be addressed if they expect to be serious contenders instead of serious pretenders going forward. Players? Manager and coaches? Front office? Something is wrong with one or all of the above entities. Any way you slice it, no “rah rah” reporting by the radio and TV folks can smooth this over. It’s a fact. They stink. They will continue to stink until they change something within the organization.

Exactly. Again, look around the league at all of the position players who aren’t Boras clients. Things have changed. Agents are advising their clients to sign deals. Confidence about ability is one thing, your setting yourself up for life with 45-50 million. Could end up with 8-9 million if things go south.
