Repost from Last-Blog…. take care folks.
September 11th, 2012
My rationale for Greinke is simple. We need a stud SP, a LF, and a CF. We can’t trade for all those. CF and LF are underwhelming in their FA class outside of Bourn. Same with SP. However, Greinke won’t be as bad an investment as one in Bourn would be.
Also, we desperately need a power LF. It’s gonna take quite a few prospects to get that. Try to get Shields or some other top SP, and we’ve done some damage to the farm. Get Greinke, and we can trade for that LF, and use some “pieces” to get a CF. Seems more efficient to me.
If there are any questions about my position, save them for later please. I’ll be back by 6;30. Peace.
At least Venters gave Kimbrel a night off last night. His top speed has bee dropping down to 96 or so last couple of times out.
September 11th, 20124:22 pm
Let’s get it done, Huddy! Braves need to bounce back from last night’s loss. Don’t let this turn into a losing streak! Go Braves!
September 11th, 20124:23 pm
Chapman has been in 64 games this year. Kimbrel, in contrast, has appeared in only 53.

Next stop? Instructional League.
phil may be sad, but he’s funny. Redeeming feature.
phil is not sad. phil is often full of bull. Big difference!
September 11th, 20124:26 pm
I watched Chapman last night. His velocity was in the 94-96 range, and his location was poor. One bright spot was that almost all of his pitches were down in the dirt, if they were up – sayonara
September 11th, 20124:28 pm
Noticed Freeman out of the lineup tonight. Best thing for him. He is scuffling and his head has not been in the game. Can’t say I’m thrilled with Overbay but what can you do. Go Braves!
September 11th, 20124:30 pm
Great blog Carroll. I really like the links to old stories. It makes it a lot easier, Thanks
September 11th, 20124:31 pm
Can’t say I’m thrilled with Overbay but what can you do.
Ought to see if there’s anything there, before the postseason, don’t you think? Gotta have some at-bats to know that.
September 11th, 20124:34 pm
I watched Chapman last night.
I flipped over and watched that stinkin’ Gio for a while. Walking the ballgirls and the Mets couldn’t do anything about it. Dangit.
Nats beat up on the kid last night, but they get some big-boy baseball tonight. Hopefully, R.A. gets their swings all discombobulated for about a week.
September 11th, 20124:36 pm
yes, but that works out to about 57 games height-adjusted
You’re right. Let’s hope for the best. Better to find out now than later. Hope the Braves can put together some extra base hits instead of just singles. It would take some pressure off the bases loaded syndrome as of late.
September 11th, 20124:37 pm
cricket, re your 4:36…
September 11th, 20124:38 pm
Freeman needs to sit. Hopefully, Overbay won’t screw the pooch.
TOBF – (if and when you see this…) Make up your mind…Do you want a stud SP, or do you want Greinke?
September 11th, 20124:39 pm
scoots @4:31 – Insightful, as usual, PLUS, FF could use a break.
September 11th, 20124:42 pm
Venters is either cannot be hit or is really bad. Fredi needed to realize as soon as a walk was issued to a guy trying to make an out that last night was the latter and get him out before any more damage can be done.
September 11th, 20124:43 pm
cricket @4:36 – That’s one thing I love about this blog…plenty of very good quick wit raises it’s head around here on a regular basis.
September 11th, 20124:44 pm
Yep – R. A. has a tendency to really screw up the mashers for a period of time
RBI @4:38 – Is it Bark in the Park night?
September 11th, 20124:45 pm
Not surprised about Prado watching replay videos; he’s always working hard on his game. Classy move by Venters in the clubhouse; in his quotes he took full responsibility for letting the team down. Sitting Freeman? About time.
I am sure that Overbay hopes he does not screw the pooch!
September 11th, 20124:47 pm
Thanks again, Carroll!
Good for Jonny for not pulling a MFIKY. Classy, fo’ sure.

Wonder if the visit to Harley-Davidson is a foreshadowing of the retirement gift for CJ? Of course he would have to ride it while wearing a sausage costume.

baseball gods were messing with Simmons last night, by not giving him a single chance at SS. Probably gets 2 Web Gems, 3 Cap One Premier Plays, and a half-dozen Grass Clippings tonight. Might get 25 put-outs and assists.
Two Ks by Huddy.
September 11th, 20124:56 pm
Don’t know if any of you have noticed, but the Phillies are tearing it up right now and are only 5 games out of the 2nd WC spot. Even if the Bravos gain homefield for the 1 game playoff, I for sure don’t want it to be against the Phills. I’d rather play Milwaukee, Pitt or the Cards. Those Phills just won’t go away. FWIW….I think Medlen needs to start that WC game if we get there.

September 11th, 20124:57 pm
My main complaint about last night was Fredi not one time taking up for his players by arguing a call. The strike zone was terribly inconsistent. We don’t need him tossed every game but players need to feel his support. Minor was good. Venters was bad. Prado tried too hard. Others didn’t try hard enough.
September 11th, 20124:58 pm
That’s one good thing about living in Vermont – I’m not blacked out on the Extra Innings Package. I’ll have to listen to the Brewer’s tv Dudes who are – shall we say – not the greatest, but at least I can watch the games.
What irritates Hall of Fame pitcher Don Sutton?
What he doesn’t see.
“Pitchers going nine,” Sutton said.
In the 1970s, you’d need to record roughly 25 complete games to lead the league. Since 1999, only James Shields has hit double-digits in any single season.
Pitchers aren’t being asked to summon the same stamina.
Nor to practice the art of pacing themselves.
“There should be a mindset,” Sutton said. “We’re encouraging mediocrity and we’re getting it. We’ve lowered the standards and guys are performing up to our expectations.”
September 11th, 20124:59 pm
Good for Overbay drawing a start. The Braves could have decided to use Prado at 1B and Constanza in LF instead.
I missed the replay where Prado was thrown out at 3B the second time. But he must have has a loose thread hanging out the back of his shirt that got tagged because it sure looked like air was all the glove got.
September 11th, 20125:01 pm
Jon – I agree about the Phillies. While people constantly complain about the Braves, they should realize that the Cardinals, Dodgers, and Pirates all have struggled mightily over the past ten games. The door is opening for the Phillies and even the Brewers.
September 11th, 20125:02 pm
I will wait until Prado plays third and Constanza plays left before I make my next wager.
September 11th, 20125:10 pm
Verducci was waxing eloquent about Braves & Medlen in case anyone cares what Verducci thinks…
September 11th, 20125:16 pm
I have to run but the one good thing about the Phillies being on a tear is that they play the Gnats six more times. For the Phillies to be trying in those games can only help us.
September 11th, 20125:19 pm
If we get to set our rotation, Medlen absolutely should start the play-in game if he’s still hot. I’ve seen too many 1st inning 4-spots from Huddy, and this sensitive offense doesn’t need to be in that big a hole before they even step to the plate in a do-or-die game. Then in the NLDS you trust you can get at least 2 wins out of Huddy-Maholm-Minor-Hanson, reserving Meds on regular rest for Game 5 if necessary. And if you take it in 4 Meds is ready to go Game 1 of NLCS.

TOBF – (if and when you see this…) Make up your mind…Do you want a stud SP, or do you want Greinke?
Grrr. Greinke is a stud! Haven’t you ever seen him? He’s definitely good looking… oh, and he pitches pretty well too
September 11th, 20125:39 pm
Today Strasburg is a starter shut down and Medlen is a shutdown starter.
From the link Heisenberg posted at 5:10… I like that.

#Athletics’ Brandon McCarthy was discharged from California Pacific Medical Campus in San Francisco earlier this afternoon.

Somebody watches Sports Nation? And then publicly admits they watch? Those late afternoon ESPN shows make me glad I have a job. Better off listening to the radio or watching Ellen than that drivel.
September 11th, 20125:51 pm
I’m with Heisenberg at 4:59, it sure looked like Ramirez never touched Prado with the glove on that swipe tag from the replay. I mean, you still can’t get thrown out at third in that situation, so don’t think Martin should have chanced it, but it looked like he got in there…

Overbay getting a chance to start at first over Hinske probably shows that Overbay and Not Hinske will be in the post season roster. You have to assume 6 hitters
Out- Pasternicky Hinske
September 11th, 20126:30 pm
gotta love Jonny Venters, a class act when he is incredibly effective like last year and a class act when he has struggles like last night… so easy to be a fan. wish him the very best!!!
September 11th, 20126:49 pm
I can’t believe that DOB missed out on a chance to go to the Harley Museum with Fredi.
September 11th, 20126:53 pm
They may have Pastornicky and Ski along with those six for the one game playoff.
September 11th, 20126:56 pm
No need for Janish to be on playoff roster. Gotta have guys who can contribute some offense. If Andrelton goes down we can get by with Prado until the next series.
September 11th, 20126:59 pm
Given that Marteen is our starting left fielder and the back up 2nd baseman, 3rd baseman & 1st baseman, I think having Janish on the playoff roster would be wise
September 11th, 20127:02 pm
DOB got to ride 200 miles today on his bike..can’t beat that Ace.

this team do a lot better if u got rid of the white 3base and manager

September 11th, 20127:13 pm
Freddie, Cmon now
I bragged on you bringing in Kimmy in the 8th with the lead a week ago and pitched him 1 and a third for the save.
You got lucky the other day pitching him in the 8th and sideslinger in the 9th.
Today, you’re going nuts. Overbay gets a hit and you start him. Shoulda put Prado at 1B and Georgie in left against the righty. Look up the winning percentage with Georgie
Georgie plays = Braves win
September 11th, 20127:18 pm
Two center fielders are FA after the season, our own Bourn and Angel Pagan of the Giants. Offer Bourn three years with an option and offer Pagan four years with an option. If the Braves can’t sign either one then shame on them. Bourn may be on thin ice as Boras is his agent and Mr. Shurholtz has said the Braves would never deal with him again after the Furcal fiasco. I like Pagan a bit more than Bourn but either one has to be wearing the tomahawk next year.
September 11th, 20127:20 pm
I don’t think Boras was Furcal’s agent….
September 11th, 20127:25 pm
Looks like the Braves will have a huge advantage in looking at the schedule from 18Sep-3Oct. Gnats have some really tough games to play, while the Braves have mostly the Marlins, Mets, Phillies, etc. Another big plus is that during that period the Braves have two days off in a 14 game stretch, while the Gnats have no days off in a 16 game stretch. That will be plenty tough here at the end of the year, especially on the pitching. Should be a major time for the Braves to make up some ground.
September 11th, 20127:26 pm
Good evening all. Let’s get a win tonight. (And the Mets too )
September 11th, 20127:27 pm
…and the Marlins while we’re at it! Though… Phils are alrady up 3-0 in the 1st.
September 11th, 20127:30 pm
Got some real bright ones here tonight.
September 11th, 20127:31 pm
I guess if Buddy Biancalana can impact a playoff series why not Janish…
September 11th, 20127:32 pm
think it is just one phil with the changing monkier thing going.
Have fun all.

September 11th, 20127:33 pm
Hey guys and gals. I’m still here in Texas for now rooting the Braves on with extra innings. I’m hoping that I’ll get to see them early next month when I go on block leave before I deploy in November. Keep up the wonderful blogging all of you and I’ll try to get on here often as possible while I’m downrange.
September 11th, 20127:35 pm
Damn, forgot to say that I really enjoy the blog DOB and Carol. Keep up the amazing work you both do.
September 11th, 20127:37 pm
I agree with you as well. Though you’re forgetting about Francisco (backup 3B) and Overbay/Hinske as backup 1B. Marteen is really only the backup 2B. Just sucks that my boy REV might get left off of the playoff roster. Dang you Janish!
September 11th, 20127:38 pm
bravelover— Boras is not Furcals agent. The Braves have dealt with Boras before–Greg Maddux
Derek Lowe and I’m sure there were/are others. I know Boras was Andruw’s agent, but not at the time he signed the first time. Needless to say, the Braves will work with Scott Boras
September 11th, 20127:45 pm
September 11th, 20127:46 pm
Stop looking at the scehdule strength for the Braves. Noway can we make up 6.5 games with 20 left to play. we would have to go 20-0 and Nationals would need to go 14-7
At best we can go 15-5 in this case the Nats would need to go 9-12 Not happening.
September 11th, 20127:47 pm
I did not forget about Francisco or Overbay or Hinske. But in the playoffs, I’d play Marteen over any of them (unless he is playing somewhere else, of course)

I really think Overbay & Hinske should be at home watching games like we all are doing. Both are wasted roster spots. I guess Jeff Baker’s just the new bat boy ? Haven’t seen him play but seen a bunch of inteviews he did.
September 11th, 20127:53 pm
I can understand that cab, I’d even agree…. I was just thinking of it from the mindset that we might have only 1 backup OF on the roster (Reed). So, I don’t think that it’d be the wisest thing for Fredi to start both Martin and Reed in the same game. Gotta save one of them for late in the game, meaning that Prado starts LF and one of the other guys would start at 3B or 1B.
September 11th, 2012
If I were a Yankees or Rangers fan, that would be fine. Luckily I’m not a Yankees or Rangers fan. I’m a Braves fan. I watch Braves games, look at Braves stats, read Braves stories, and post on Braves blogs. But thank you for the suggestion, but I’ll pass.
Freeman looks like he needs a break. Weird, I posted that after the game last night and he’s getting a break today. Makes me feel like somebody is listening to me.

I guess Jeff Baker’s just the new bat boy ? Haven’t seen him play but seen a bunch of inteviews he did.
Seems like he might’ve been an insurance policy for Uggla. I truly believe that if Uggs kept struggling, they would have Martin start some games against righties at 2B, and have Baker start there against lefties. However, Uggs seems to be coming out of it, so Baker hasn’t gotten much playing time. Would like to see what he’s got though…
I’m just thinking in terms of bench positions. Don’t want to get into rosters or who should play where- I just think it’s wise to have a back up ss that can play excellent defense on the play off roster. Too important of a position to not.
Repost from old blog.

I hollared early this season about FREDI running MINOR out there every 5 days to get beat up on. Well I was WRONG, MINOR has developed into a fine pitcher. Now it seems MEDLEN, HUDSON, MINOR and pray for rain.

I don’t think so sister! I’m giving Medlen 100 bucks to show his face at the Cobb Parkway Hooters! We can’t let this go so easily!
