My rationale for Greinke is simple. We need a stud SP, a LF, and a CF. We can’t trade for all those. CF and LF are underwhelming in their FA class outside of Bourn. Same with SP. However, Greinke won’t be as bad an investment as one in Bourn would be.

Also, we desperately need a power LF. It’s gonna take quite a few prospects to get that. Try to get Shields or some other top SP, and we’ve done some damage to the farm. Get Greinke, and we can trade for that LF, and use some “pieces” to get a CF. Seems more efficient to me.

If there are any questions about my position, save them for later please. I’ll be back by 6;30. Peace.

I watched Chapman last night. His velocity was in the 94-96 range, and his location was poor. One bright spot was that almost all of his pitches were down in the dirt, if they were up – sayonara

Don’t know if any of you have noticed, but the Phillies are tearing it up right now and are only 5 games out of the 2nd WC spot. Even if the Bravos gain homefield for the 1 game playoff, I for sure don’t want it to be against the Phills. I’d rather play Milwaukee, Pitt or the Cards. Those Phills just won’t go away. FWIW….I think Medlen needs to start that WC game if we get there.

My main complaint about last night was Fredi not one time taking up for his players by arguing a call. The strike zone was terribly inconsistent. We don’t need him tossed every game but players need to feel his support. Minor was good. Venters was bad. Prado tried too hard. Others didn’t try hard enough.

What irritates Hall of Fame pitcher Don Sutton?

What he doesn’t see.

“Pitchers going nine,” Sutton said.

In the 1970s, you’d need to record roughly 25 complete games to lead the league. Since 1999, only James Shields has hit double-digits in any single season.

Pitchers aren’t being asked to summon the same stamina.

Nor to practice the art of pacing themselves.

“There should be a mindset,” Sutton said. “We’re encouraging mediocrity and we’re getting it. We’ve lowered the standards and guys are performing up to our expectations.”

If we get to set our rotation, Medlen absolutely should start the play-in game if he’s still hot. I’ve seen too many 1st inning 4-spots from Huddy, and this sensitive offense doesn’t need to be in that big a hole before they even step to the plate in a do-or-die game. Then in the NLDS you trust you can get at least 2 wins out of Huddy-Maholm-Minor-Hanson, reserving Meds on regular rest for Game 5 if necessary. And if you take it in 4 Meds is ready to go Game 1 of NLCS.

Two center fielders are FA after the season, our own Bourn and Angel Pagan of the Giants. Offer Bourn three years with an option and offer Pagan four years with an option. If the Braves can’t sign either one then shame on them. Bourn may be on thin ice as Boras is his agent and Mr. Shurholtz has said the Braves would never deal with him again after the Furcal fiasco. I like Pagan a bit more than Bourn but either one has to be wearing the tomahawk next year.

Looks like the Braves will have a huge advantage in looking at the schedule from 18Sep-3Oct. Gnats have some really tough games to play, while the Braves have mostly the Marlins, Mets, Phillies, etc. Another big plus is that during that period the Braves have two days off in a 14 game stretch, while the Gnats have no days off in a 16 game stretch. That will be plenty tough here at the end of the year, especially on the pitching. Should be a major time for the Braves to make up some ground.

I can understand that cab, I’d even agree…. I was just thinking of it from the mindset that we might have only 1 backup OF on the roster (Reed). Seems like he might’ve been an insurance policy for Uggla. I truly believe that if Uggs kept struggling, they would have Martin start some games against righties at 2B, and have Baker start there against lefties. However, Uggs seems to be coming out of it, so Baker hasn’t gotten much playing time. Would like to see what he’s got though…
