NEW YORK – Before his last scheduled series in New York, Chipper Jones held court during a press conference, which was necessary due to number of interview requests that had preceded the retiring Braves third baseman’s arrival in the city where so many fans have loved to hate “LAIR-eee, LAIR-eee” over the years, but where he’s relished playing more than anywhere else outside Atlanta.
Since he was as candid and interesting as always, I figured I’d run the full transcript of Jones’ Friday presser as our main blog today. He discussed not just what it’s been like being the black-hatted opponent in New York, but also what kept him in Atlanta for his entire career. Oh, and he gave us an update on his son Shea, named after you know what.

Before we dive in, I thought you’d want to hear his response to a question about what it’s been like to surpass the expectations that most people had for him as a 40-year-old in his final season, and what drove him to excel this year beyond the usual desire to help his team get to the postseason and then make a run at the World Series.
“I didn’t want anybody to say this year, ‘You should have retired three years ago,’” said Chipper, who in his past 50 games before today has hit .302 with 15 doubles, eight homers, 31 RBIs and a .379 OBP and .516 slugging percentage. “When I broke into the big leagues, the only phrase I didn’t want to hear the entire ’95 season was, ‘Terry Pendleton would have made that play,’ or ‘Terry Pendleton would have got a hit right there.’ And it’s been much the same this year in that I didn’t want to have people saying, ‘It was sad to see Chipper play his last year, he was a shell of his former self.’ Which I’ll admit I am. Physically anyway.
“But when I look up on that Jumbotron and see a .300 average by my name and some run production and all that kind of stuff, I kind of smirk a little bit. It makes me feel good.”
Here’s the rest of what he said Friday, beginning with this opening statement before he fielded questions.
“It’s been a good ride. It’s been fun to come here and play in New York. I’ve loved the opportunity and I’ve enjoyed interacting with most of you sitting out here, on various occasions, sharing stories and just talking baseball. Like I’ve said, the New York experience is one like no other. My father grew up a huge Mickey Mantle fan and I always had this preconceived notion of what playing in New York was like. And boy, was I in for a rude awakening when I finally did get here.
“But it’s been a good ride, and I want to thank each and every one of you for your patience over the years. I know at times I’ve been hard to get along with. Other times not so much. But it’s been fun interacting with you guys. Make no mistake, this is my last trip in. I’m in awe of the attention that this series is getting, but it is much appreciated.”
How’d you sleep this time? (he famously complained in past after missing games in New York in past, including last month, due to a stiff back from sleeping on beds at the team’s longtime hotel)
“I slept awesome. I slept at the Grand Hyatt. I think I got Obama’s suite. The Grand Hyatt, they really rolled out the red carpet this time. It’s the best night of sleep I’ve had in New York in 20 years.”
On Shea Stadium
“For me every major league ballpark is somewhat of a cathedral. But that one holds a special place for me. Playing on this [New York] stage is the most fun of anywhere you can play, it doesn’t matter if it’s Shea Stadium or Yankee Stadium. But [Shea] holds a special place. I’ve played in some epic games in that ballpark. Whether it’s my first home run, whether it’s the first game after 9/11, whether it’s the grand-slam single that [Robin] Ventura hit – I’m enough of a man to take a step back and realize when the other team does something special, that it affects me as well. A lot of the memories that I have of Shea Stadium aren’t necessarily good ones, but I respect the fact that some pretty amazing players did some pretty amazing things to our ballclub over the years.”
On playing in New York, how experience has evolved for him
“I’ve said it many times, I’m a small-town kid. I’m from a town of about 600 people, a blue-collar town, and it’s amazing enough that I’ve gotten to experience 23 years of professional baseball coming from where I came from. So to say that the first time I jumped off the plane at LaGuardia that I was a little intimidated would be an understatement.”
“For the first 10 years of my career … I never left my hotel [while in New York]. This was an intimidating place for me. Probably in the last five or six years have I ventured out and walked down the street, and signed autographs while I was walking down the street. And there are all kinds; it’s New York. You’re going to run into one bad apple every once in a while. But for the most part everybody’s been gracious, everybody’s been very nice. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, ‘Yo Chippuh,’ ‘Yo, Chippuh, quit beating up on my Mets,’ or ‘Good luck against the Yanks.’ It’s that kind of interaction that, quite frankly, 10 or 15 years ago I didn’t think was in my future.”
Favorite memory of playing in New York?
“It’s hard to compete with the first. So many good memories that I have of Shea Stadium are from that very first series, whether it was the 2-0 fastball that I got fom Josias Manzanillo in the top of the ninth to help us win 3-2 [his first home run]. Whether it was the home run I hit off Pete Harnish the very next day, into their bullpen.
“But above even those, I think, 9/11 was my fondest memory. That’ll be a game that’ll be etched in memory forever. You’re talking about two heated rivals; we didn’t necessarily like each other much back then. And we got together before the game, we came together, grown men shaking hands, giving hugs. I think we all as Braves knew that night that we were in trouble, because we were not only playing a very good baseball team, but you just had a feeling that God and every baseball god was on New York’s side that night. And the matinee idol, Mike Piazza, ends up hitting the storybook homer that sent everybody home feeling great, feeling wonderful. We’d done our jobs as baseball players to entertain people, but we had gone, I feel, above the beyond just a normal day’s work in that we owed it to the city of New York and the northeastern United States to help heal a little bit, to help take people’s minds off of a terrible tragedy for a couple of hours. And it was a riveting game from start to finish. You had 50 guys out there that were going at it pretty hard, and ultimately Piazza won it….
“I guess when you hear Bobby Cox’s reaction after the game, and knowing Bobby the way I do and as intense as he was and how he wanted to win every single inning, every single pitch of a game, even he admitted after the game it was as it should be. As long as we came out and beat them the next day, it’s OK they won [that first game].”
On son Shea, when did he understand the origin of his name?
“It wasn’t very hard for him, because his room has been blue and orange from the very get-go. He has murals on the walls of baseball players and Shea Stadium. I’ve given him replicas of Shea Stadium throughout the years. He has two stadium seats in his closet, bolted to the floor so he can sit on them and get dressed every day for school. Whenever a stadium flashes up on TV, he goes, ‘Is that my stadium, dad?’
“He just turned 8, and he’s a pretty good athlete. He was hitting a pitched ball before he was 3 years old. So his hand-eye coordination is there. He’s one of the best football players on his team.”
Is he right-handed or left-handed?
“He’s a right-hander.”
Not a switch-hitter?
“Not yet. That’s one of my bucket-list retirement things. The switch-hitting is something that’s going to probably come later. But he’s a very good athlete. He’s one of the best football players on his team He’s paid me back for a lot of the bad things I’ve done in my life – he’s my one that I have to go get out of the principal’s office a time or two. But he’s a great kid.”
On Craig Biggio, their conversation early this season about retirement, when Biggio gave him cowboy hat in Houston send-off
“I played in his last game [before Biggio retired]. He hit the ball to me in his last at-bat, and I lobbed it to first base to give him every opportunity to beat it out. I went up to him and I said, you know that I threw that off-balance on purpose to give you an opportunity to beat that out? He said, ‘Yeah, 10 years ago I would have.’”
What else is on your bucket list?
“Hunting, fishing in Mexico, go to England to play some golf. Go to a Ryder Cup. A lot things. I live so close to Augusta that I’ve got to play it a couple of times, but I want to go over there Augusta weekend and watch the best in the world tackle that, figure out what I did wrong the first couple of times I went through there. Just some things like that.”
Ever wonder what it might’ve been like to play here in New York?
“Yeah, you always dream about whether the grass is greener on the other side, or how you would be thought of or revered differently had you played in a huge major market such as this one. That being said, I wouldn’t trade my experience in Atlanta for anything. I’ve gotten a chance to influence an entire region of the United States. And you know what’s cool for me? When you one of those Little League teams from Georgia make it to the Little League World Series? And nine out of 10 of them say you’re their favorite player, when they’re on TV. They do the same things up here, don’t get me wrong. But I’m not sure I would have been the same person, the same player, in a market like this.

Mets fans have enjoyed booing him over the years, but some of them gave Jones a standing ovation when he brought out the lineup card Sunday before his last scheduled game in New York. Here he's pictured in a playoff game against the Mets.
“I wear my emotions on my sleeve, and sometimes I’m going to say stuff that people didn’t like. And up here stuff tends to get blown out of proportion a little bit. As some of you know me – I’ve been years without talking to some of you guys for stuff that’s been printed in the paper up here, because I just don’t feel like it was printed in the correct context.
“I’ll never forget the time I had to call Alex Rodriguez to smooth things over with him, and he assured me that nothing was up. And I meant no ill will by it, it was just one of those classic instances where stuff kind of got blown out of proportion here. That stuff doesn’t happen in Atlanta.”
On his 1999 MVP season, when he dashed Mets division-title hopes
“I was in my fifth year in major league baseball and starting to take that next step upward and having a great season, getting some MVP talk. And then the Mets come in and we’ve got a one-game lead, and that series – I was just in a zone. There’s no other way to put it. [He hit four homers in critical three-game September series sweep at Atlanta.] They pitched me carefully, but there were a couple of situations in the series where they couldn’t avoid me, and I was just in one of those streaks where everything I hit when out of the ballpark. It kind of put me on the map, and I guess that’s the first time I started drawing the ire of Mets fans.”
On whether he liked the villain role in New York
“I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as [John] Rocker did. I’m one of those guys that likes to be liked. I care what people think about me. I care what people’s image of me is. I think it’s that whole Civil War thing – North against the South, all that. We were the country boys that were brash and cocky, but very good. And coming up here and playing well, on a big stage. I think it was good for baseball. Because no matter where you go, you always got the Yankees and the Red Sox. Well now you’ve got a very, very good Mets team who has a big rival in a very, very good Braves team back in the day. And it made for good back-page banter, I’ll say that.”
On reception he thought he’d get in last visit to New York
“I’d like to think it will be somewhat mixed. I know there are going to be a lot of Braves fans here, who wouldn’t miss this opportunity — ever. Somebody asked me the question yesterday or the day before, ‘If I were a Mets fan, how would I feel about me?’ I would respect the body of work, but I would hate his guts.”
On the importance of playing with one team for his entire career, and how a player like the Mets’ David Wright should weigh that when thinking about re-signing with New York .
“It was very important for me. I can honestly say this is one reason why the Atlanta Braves and I have had such a good marriage, is because the Braves have never allowed me to go to free agency. They never allowed me to even get close to free agency. I’ve never got to a free-agent year without having a long-term deal signed before spring training. That’s huge. When your employer impresses upon you that they won’t you there, and they don’t want you going anywhere, they don’t even want you sniffing the other side of the fence. That’s big.
“And I’m a Southern kid. I grew up in the South. I was born into the Braves organization, I grew up in the Braves organization, I reaped the benefits of the professional life at the big-league level in Atlanta. And I got to play for arguably the greatest manager of all time in Bobby Cox. So for me, it really didn’t seem like the grass was all that greener. I mean, because I got spoiled by the success the Atlanta Braves had early in my career. Bobby was there. Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz were there. It was a lead-pipe cinch where I wanted to play and stay.
“And once it got to the point where those guys kind of left the game and left the Brave organization, I just felt it was my duty to stay through thick and then. Cal Ripken, Tony Gwynn, Biggio, Bagwell, all those guys. They set a good example for me. Not tucking tail and running when things got tough. When people think of me I want them to think of that big A on my hat and have that be the first thing that comes to mind.”
• OK, that’s it. Hope you enjoyed that. I want to get this posted before gametime, so I’ll have to skip some other stuff I had. I’ll try to squeeze that into today’s notebook in a bit.
Today’s blog-ending tune might seem a bit too obvious, but it’s also appropriate and I couldn’t resist. You can hear Hoboken, N.J. native Frank Sinatra sing it by clicking here. Or see and hear Sid Vicious do it quite a bit differently by clicking here.

Sinatra
“MY WAY” by R. Fair, S. Ridel, M. Modesto, A. Sheth
And now, the end is here
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain
I’ve lived a life that’s full
I traveled each and ev’ry highway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way
Regrets, I’ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way
[
Yes, there were times, I’m sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way
I’ve loved, I’ve laughed and cried
I’ve had my fill, my share of losing
And now, as tears subside, I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way,
“Oh, no, oh, no, not me, I did it my way”
For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows and did it my way!
Yes, it was my way

Prado and Freeman need to vary their hitting approach on 1st pitches. Prado never swings at the 1st pitch and everyone knows it so the oposing pitchers have an automatic strike one so he is always behind in the count and Freeman always swings at the 1st pitch so they throw him something he can’t hit and he is either behind in the count or he makes an out. Granted they are both pretty good strike 2 hitters but it seems to me it would be better to change it up now and then.

Strategy talk but I wouldn’t have walked Georgie in the 2nd inning. Pitched around him and see if he chases some bad balls which he is apt to do. Then you get Tommy and the automatic out to start the 3rd. Just me.
Although I realize Georgie does strike fear into the opposition!

Love it! I would love it, DOB, if you could work on a Chipper retrospective to release once the season ends. Kind of a scrapbook of sorts. I don’t know if the AJC bosses will allow it to be one of those Sunday paper all-color inserts or not. But, I’d love to have something tangible that I could keep and hold on to…perhaps even give it to my nephews when they’re older. I don’t know who in the world will end up their favorite Brave after Chipper. They have never known a Braves’ team without him. Thanks for all the color in life you brought to our Braves, Chipper. We will miss you.

Been a lot of guys that were fat that pitched well but they pitched late into games. You mentioned Sabathia and another good one was David Wells. Something is causing him to be empty at the 5th or 6th. I’m guessing because he looks fat, soft and lazy to me but I could be wrong. Tommy is basically a 2 pitch pitcher at this point. His fastball isn’t good enough to dominate so he has to throw so many curves that put stress on his shoulder. Those hitters will eventually lay off or time that curveball. That’s why he is a 5 inning pitcher.

We are on completely different pages here though Brian so lets just hope we can pull it out here in the 10th since Teeen just legged out an infield hit

Sometimes, rare times, something works, and you’re still left wondering what was he thinking!
When a closure gets the win and the setup man gets the save, it is normally because the closure blew the first save opportunity. But, not today! The closer was used as the setup man in a tie game, and the setup man was used to save a one-run lead.
It worked — barely!
Had it failed, recriminations would have followed Fredi Gonzalez everywhere and for many days. I’m glad it worked, but it was among the most bizzare uses of a bullpen I have ever seen and without some degree of explanation, remains highly questionable despite it working.
Peter Moylan was interviewed after the game and was asked when he and Kimbrel knew of Fredi’s choice. His reply, “When I saw Kimbrel walking out to be honest with you!” He laughed and so did the interviewer, and I did also. The speculation among the TV crew was Fredi wanted to give Kimbrel two innings of work, but he had to pinch hit for Kimbrel and could not have done that.
It worked — that’s the best thing I can say for it!

So, a few notes about the game in my opinion… since I wasn’t here today.
JuanFran looked horrible again… kinda like how he looked early this year. 0-4 with 4 Ks… Yeesh!
Tommy was decent today, still couldn’t leave the 5th. Had better command, and walked away allowing just 2 runs. Decent start. Good job Tommy. He might be coming around.
The use of our closer in a tie game on the road sure hurt us today…
I wasn’t a big fan of Moylan finishing the game (since he’s just coming back). I’d have preferred Durbin. But hey, we won, so who am I to complain?
Got the sweep, 5 straight wins, and we continue to make ground against the Nats and other WC contenders… not much longer before we clinch.

Cards: 5 games down
Pirates & Dodgers: 6 games down
BTW: I count the games down in the loss column because that better reflects games left to be played. It’s also used in the formula for magic numbers.
There are only four teams in baseball with over 80 wins. The Braves are one of them. Surprisingly, the AL East has none of them! The NL East is the only division with two.

Agree… from late 7th (occasionally) but definitely from the 8th on, you’re closer should be ready to go. The SV stat isn’t all that big. It’s a bigger deal to keep a game tied in the 8th or 9th (esp. on the road) than it is to close the game when leading by 1-3 runs.

3-0 with 9 to go. We run the tsable against the METS and FISH and we’re at 90 wins. Win three against the N.L. Central and 2 of 6 against the NATS-PHILLIES we’re at 95 wins. Nobody is gonna’ beat that except the NATS ………… maybe.
Keep winning the games we should win and puit the pressure on the NATS. Let’s see if they fold. Great win today.
REDSKINS and RGIII punish the SAINTS for having the temerity to showing up. Chopped liver ‘AINT’S,’ heh!

Sometimes, and only sometimes, the most important outs are the last ones.
problem is that you don’t know what will be the important outs till they appear. The outs in the ninth/10th might be even more important than what you used your closer on, and alas he is no longer available. almost happened today, and easily could have.
a few here advocate for that approach, mostly saber-guys, but it will be a long time if ever b4 it becomes all that common IMO

the fact that they had to make a choice to walk a mediocre lefty to get to a superior hitter like Wright is the crux of the problem. Crazy even if it works

“Braves are putting a wide bit of distance between them and the rest of the Wild Card challengers.”
It doesn’t really matter. We still have to play that one game playoff, which will mean our record meant nothing, if we lose.

James Shields with another huge game. ERA down to 3.71 in the incredibly difficult American League East. Can’t really think of a better pitcher to go after this offseason than him, if we choose to do so.
And Tommy Hanson being non-tendered and having no trade value is about the most ridiculous notion I’ve heard on here. He’s still a solid pitcher.

I would too… would be hesitant to take it to 6 for just over 100, or even 5 for 90, but even those aren’t all too bad. We keep our prospects and get a solid pitcher. I imagine that Greinke will get something in that range, can’t see him being paid over 20mil.

With this lineup, one piece depends on another. If Uggla’s resurgence is truly legit. If McCann’s shoulder can take to cortisone and stay pain free down the stretch. If Heyward & Freeman can respond positively to Uggla’s & McCann’s uptick. If Simmons can start hitting out of the box tomorrow and turn the SS position into a hitting positive. If a Reed/Costanza LF platoon can prove useful. If the LF platoon can allow Prado to spell Chipper at 3B down the stretch in order to keep him fresh and relatively pain-reduced. If Bourn can have a better September than he did last year…

Agree… oh, and btw, the SP that I would like the Braves to sign this offseason, had a few stretches like the one Shields has had, last year. He had 1 good 8 game stretch of dominance, and 2 5-game stretches of dominance (all with better ERAs and similar IPs, oppo. stat lines). Greinke ain’t a bad pitcher y’all. A borderline #1, but a solid #2. We need a pitcher like him next year.

If the Giants beat the Dodgers tonight, the Braves will have a 7 game lead for a wild card spot. 7 game lead with 21 games to play.
Almost over… we’re much healthier this year.
I learned my lesson about Green Bay’s defense last year. They totally let me down week after week. Went with the Niners D this year.

Steve Avery’s name has been bantered about by Scott Boras, as a reason for shutting down Stephen Strasburg. Leo has been criticized repeatedly about Steve.
Maybe, Steve had other things to do…
Tears well in Avery’s eyes as Evan, an 18-year-old senior at Allen Park Cabrini, speaks of how much being on the school’s baseball and football teams have meant to him.
“It’s fun,” he said. “I liked being on the teams, it was all fun on the field, too. In football, I just like to hit people, I guess.”
As Evan spoke, Avery never took his eyes off his son, and the look on his face made it apparent that the former major league pitcher was listening to his personal miracle.
Here’s the rest…

Whereas I hoped he’s learned his lesson about putting the best players on the field whenever possible. With Simmons back, perhaps we will no longer be subject to the Johnson/Constanza/Francisco lineups.
Probably just a dream, though. Against righties recently, Fredo has been moving one of his LH sluggers down in the lineup and moving another one up, when both have hit LHP poorly this year. So, why would one think that lineup logic would suddenly appear during the last month?

Cards vs Dodgers, this weekend. Big games for the wildchase.
For them… I think we’d want the Cards to win, push the Dodgers further out of contention. Allows us to clinch earlier. Even if we don’t want to face the Cards, that’s likely to happen. So, the sooner we can clinch and set up our rotation, the better.

Since July 21st, Freddie Freeman has hit .229/.365/.386 in 203 plate appearances. In his last 22 games since August 17th, he’s hit .184/.337/.382 in 95 plate appearances.
Gotta say though, I love the walk rates and plate appearances I’ve seen from Freddie. Early in the season he was swinging at everything – but he’s been very selective and working deep into the count.

And the sun comes up finding us in a good place…with the memory of Chipper’s final visit to Flushing Meadows as a player fresh on our minds; one must wonder; at 51/2 games back…are these 2012 Braves approaching the final weeks as expected?
Shall it be coined the year the Braves fail to fold–or better, refuse to fold? Only time will tell….but they are well on their way to just that. Tonight’s series opener at Milwaukee is of course, vital, we traditionally play well there….nothing wrong with continuing that trait….then on to the Ted and you know who. Mr. Uggla’s last few games being any indication, along with Mac seemingly on cue, and there certainly appears to be a lot for us to look forward to in the coming weeks–as well as the return of Andrelton Simmons….well, a good ‘no fold’ appears doable.
I want Moylan, I want Moylan……..back to the 7th & 8th frames, thank you–though it is a bit comforting to know he can work late with apparently no big issues. Eric Hinski continuing to make contact in his PH appearances sure looks better than his LF backpedal ‘panic to catch’ effort. Each Brave has to now ‘turn it up’ and do what they ‘do’ well–and let things fall where they may.
In closing, wouldn’t things get real interesting if Meds said he could pitch every other day? Well, that’s a pun filled pun pie…..rather, if we just keep our spirits up….players, fans alike….2012 can in fact be a special Braves year.

He’s back folks… Since being benched, Uggla has played 5 games, with a .389/.476/.722/1.198 line. Scored 5 runs, got 7 hits in 21 PAs, 3 doubles, 1 HR, 1 RBI, and 3 BB vs 1 K.
Him not striking out is a good sign, and from looking at his swing, he looks better. I think this time it’s for real.

The Arizona Diamondbacks spoke to multiple teams about Justin Upton during the season, and rival executives expect they will trade the right fielder this winter. But some club officials also believe Arizona will move center fielder Chris Young, as well. Arizona could go into next season with an outfield of Gerardo Parra, Jason Kubel and Adam Eaton if it deals both Upton and Young, and the team’s clear focus will be adding a shortstop, such as the Rangers’ Elvis Andrus. – Buster Olney
Not saying either will be obtained by the Braves, but I’d expect both to be on their list. Simmons isn’t going anywhere, but I’d love to see a three team trade where the Braves get Upton(or Young, to a much lesser extent), the other team gets pitching from Atlanta, and Zona gets a SS.

Unfortunately, Arizona’s strongest spot in their minors is the same as the Braves, starting pitching. They also have a pretty good bullpen, so I’m not sure if EOF or Venters can engage them. I heard Leo on XM Home Plate this weekend commenting on the Strasburg situation and Avery. Leo claimed he had nothing to do with Avery’s downfall – that he had a MLB career of 1500IP.
The fact is that Avery was excellent and fell off a cliff after a couple of years under Leo. He had an increase in IP from age 20-21 (1991-1992) of over 110 IP and then another 23 in 93. He never came within 50 IP of that level (223IP at age 22) ever again and never had another season like those prior to the increase.
I know that some feel The Verducci Effect is BS, but this transcends TVE by about 75IP – I’d say it definitely had an effect on Avery’s longevity.

Interesting – Braves record by SS-
Early season with The Rev as primary SS – 28-25
With Simmons from AS break – 18-14
Sine Simmons with Wilson, Janish and Martin – 32-21
I’m not sure who pays SS really matters to the Braves’ record. I’d prefer Simmons for obvious reasons, but it apparently doesn’t make much of a difference in the record – the Braves are winning with all three (or four, or five) of them.

I’m not sure who pays SS really matters to the Braves’ record.
it would seem so, if looked at only that factor. E,g. if i remember correctly (don’t have time to look up), early when Rev was starting, the offense was clicking on all cylinders. so his deficiency compared to simmons in both offense and defense may have been covered up. similar factors could be pointed out for the records as they are with different SS.
anyway, from this point onwards, great to have simmons as he is at least as good as Janish in defense and way better than all others on offense. he should give the braves much better chance to win going forward.

Trey:
from last night. Had to attend my wife who is not well at all. Almost ran to the hospital last night, but her new infectous disease doc is wonderful. He called, and prescribed some meds to try and slow the drainage being caused by the imflammation in her sinuses. It seems to be working and she actually got about five hours sleep last night.
The swelling is pretty general including the right side of her brain, but not severe enough to operate. Lesions appear and disappear over her body which this new doc thinks are the result of some form of auto-immune problem in her system.
The pain in her ankles and feet have reduced her ability to walk and I just got her a walker this a.m.. But despite all this, I think things are better. The old GP probably would have killed her with hospitalization and anti-biotics by now.

Leo’s strength as a pitching coach had more to do with bringing vets who had fallen off back to what made them good – at least for a season or two. His successes were Jared Wright,John Burkett and a few others like them. Beachy and Medlen are the only two Braves starters over 6IP/GS.
Those bullpen innings for the Nats correlates well with extra inning games. They’ve had 9 extra inning games for a total of 17 extra innings just since the all star break. The Braves have had 10 extra inning games all season for a total of 20 extra innings.

On using Kimbrel in 9th in tie game on road
“It was one of those situations in the ninth, Roger and I talked it over, they’ve got Davis and Duda coming up, and really you feel comfortable – it’s first time I’ve done it, bringing closer in a tie game on the road – but you feel with the way our pitching matched up later in the game, that that was the game right there. Now does it make my toes tingle doing that? I don’t know, doing that with your closer on the road. He’s pitched four out of five days, you don’t want to run him out there for two innings. But you know what? It worked out. You’ve got enough experience in the bullpen with Moylan and Durbin and that group of guys, that if we do get a lead they can do it.

McCann’s HR/FB% is 11.4%, which is right in line with what he usually does. His poor batting average and slugging percentage can be attributed to the extremely low BABIP. Whether you attribute the low BABIP to bad luck, the shift, or poor quality of contact, I don’t think his pure power has taken a hit, overall this season.

George, I wouldn’t be surprised if eventually the wild card round was 2 out of 3 with no off-days. Seems MLB might eventually want to do that because it would make more money and it seems more fair (though that’s still a very short series).
Brian from SC, I suspect McCann’s low BABIP is mostly because of the shoulder issue. But he’s still probably strong enough that when he does get a hold of one, it goes like they always have. There may be a little bit of bad luck involved and the shift may be causing some trouble for him but I think it’s mostly the shoulder injury.

ncscoots, well, he did bring in Venters to face David and Duda in the 6th and 7th. The time to second-guess was probably the 8th. Perhaps he should have went with a righty with Cedeno, Tejada and Hairston due up, and then brought in O’Flaherty to face Murphy, Wright, Davis and Duda.
However, it was already the 8th and O’Flaherty is one of the top two relievers on the team this season, so I can understand not wanting to go with a lesser reliever in the 8th just to save a lefty for later, because the later match-ups may not have mattered if the lesser reliever blows the game there. I guess you could argue that Kimbrel should have been in in the 8th and O’Flaherty could have faced the tough lefties in the 9th.
But I think you want either Venters, O’Flahery or Kimbrel facing the Murphy-Wright-Davis-Duda part of the order in a tie game, late. And that’s what happened. You had to prevent the winning run right at that moment before you could worry about the match-ups later.
Moylan had to face Valdephin and Murphy, and not the tougher lefties, Davis and Duda. So everything was set up fairly well.

We keep hearing about Avery being the poster child for shutting Strasburg down.
How about Glavine? At 21 years of age he started 9 games and pitched 50 innings for the Braves. Strasburgesque plan for rookie year.
At 22 he became a rotation regular and pitched 195 innings @ 23 years he pitched 186 then he pitched 4 consecutive 200 plus inning seasons after that. In total he had 17 seasons where he pitched 190 plus innings.
Sure Strasburg is a power pitcher but it seems that Verducci and some in the media and baseball management want to paint it as a rule of thumb that these young guys (power pitchers or not) shouldn’t be throwing 200 innings. They show you Avery and Pryor as their poster children, but there are the Glavines of the world who throw lotza innings and do just fine. Verducci and crew don’t mention those guys because they don’t support their assumption. It’s just like politics. For every claim of fact, there is a polar opposite claim of fact. Even though he claims otherwise, you can’t tell me Boros didn’t have a hand in this. He talks about insurability and going against a doctors advice on innings pitched as voiding insurance…. well the fact is you can find a different doctor to give you different advice on innings pitched. Boros is looking out for Boros and his investment.
I hope the Nats flame out over this. Boros actually told them that if they don’t protect his players, he will advise players not to sign with the Nats. It’s the poster child of the tail wagging the dog. They try to get too cute talking about future investment. How many times might the Nats have this opportunity? I hope never. And in the game of baseball, they may never have this great opportunity again.
It may not make sense to some people but this issue is a primary reason I won’t root for the Nats to advance if the Braves are out of it. They are taking for granted that they will have the tools to go back to the playoffs year after year with Strasburg and crew…. and of course signing Boros clients. (hear the Mikey?) I wouldn’t be so sure.

My comments on “closer in the tied ninth” is simply that it is one inning out of many. Either match up your relievers against the opposing line-up, regardless of inning OR use a traditional seventh inning guy, set up guy, closer paradigm.
The decision to use Kimbrel in the ninth in a tied game against the heart of the order might or might not make sense in that specific instance. It’s what takes place before and after that is nonsensical.
As others have stated, if you’re planning on matching up, why not use a lesser reliever in the eighth against the bottom of the order, saving your stouter relievers for the higher stress innings against the tougher part of the order?

DAP and ncscoots, well, I would love for the Braves’ bullpen to be full of Kimbrels, O’Flahertys and even Venters. But they only have three of those types of pitchers. Sometimes it’s better to use them to prevent the winning run rather than saving them in hopes that you’ll get a lead that you need to protect.
I’m more concerned with Braves wins than making sure Kimbrel is available for a save, even if a save situation never comes.
Yes, if the closer is the best relief pitcher, he’s available that day, and the heart of the opposing team’s order is coming up in a tied road game, I do want the closer in there. No point saving him for a save situation that is less likely to come if you use an inferior reliever when the game is tied.

Because if the opposing team scores a run in the 8th against a lesser reliever, there may not be a situation later in which a better reliever faces a tougher part of the order.
And contrary to what some of you may believe, the Mets don’t have a lot of really weak spots in the order. David Wright is there only star-level hitter but they actually are a pretty solid offensive club, 5th in the league in OPS+.

shaun, personally, i just dont like moylan facing lefties in that situation. thats my beef. i dont even know if i agree that he is a ROOGY. but, he is weaker vs lefties, for sure. i think its good that fredi went ahead and used kimbrel after warming him up.

I think it would be really, really tough to lose a tie-breaker game for the division crown, and then turn around and win the wild-card play-in game a day or so later. That would take some beaucoup mental toughness.
in other words, all it would take is some excellent pitching and the imaginary clutch hitting (originated out of beaucoup mental toughness)

DAP, oh, I absolutely agree that the Braves should avoid using Moylan against lefty hitters, if they can help it. But the thing is that they have to first and foremost worry about preventing the winning run from scoring before they worry about who is available to pick up a save. If they blow the game before a save situation arises, what does it matter who is available?
imaginary clutch hitting
How many times do we need to explain this? Clutch hitting is not imaginary. It’s just that pretty much every player who reaches the majors is extremely clutch, thereby negating the difference in one player’s ability to come through in a pressure situation over another. Not a difficult concept to grasp if you can get beyond simplifying it to this notion that “clutch is imaginary.”

Besides, I don’t hate Hanson like Ef does. Ef has been calling for trading him all season long. He threw in the towel on Hanson back in Spring Training.
Hold on a second here, TenneseePaul…..
I do not hate Hanson. I defended him all season against folks like MFin. I “threw in the towel” on him being an ace earlier in the season because topping out at 89 with below average command isn’t going to get you very far and I didn’t think that velo was coming back as you had hoped. But just because he isn’t a top of the rotation starter doesn’t mean he’s garbage and I threw in the towel. Still a solid mid-rotation guy when things are going.
Ef has been down on him cause of his velocity loss, but I don’t think he believes Tommy is worthless
Thanks for paying attention, noles. Appreciate it.
Jeez TenneseePaul, you gotta keep up.

Shaun – How many times do we have to explain this? Clutch is REAL, and the degree that a player is clutch depends at least partly (some would say largely) on how well he handles pressure as an individual…which varies from one guy to the next. Some guys are clutch, some choke, some are degrees in between.

And I fully expect Freeman to have a big week. Similar to Heyward, just when you think they are falling into big time slumps, they snap out of it and have a .900 week of something. And just like Heyward has showed consistent power, Freeman has been showing consistent on base ability, and that’s an awesome thing.
I love both Heyward and Freeman. How can you not as a Braves fan? I just like the players that are most valuable….and to me, Heyward has been the more valuable this year.

raleighbravefan, is that post based on evidence or is it just what you believe? Because there is not a lot of evidence that there is much variation. If you just want to go on your beliefs or what you want to believe, that’s fine. Just want to make sure it’s clear that’s what you and others want to do, rather than going by what the evidence suggests. As for me, I don’t pretend that my beliefs or what I want to believe is better than what the evidence suggests is the case. But we all have to arrive at the truth or as close to the truth as we can get or what we think is the truth in our own ways.

Since this blog was about Chipper that’s my only subject. He took a blasting from some for playing this year, as it seemed everyone had written him off as a has-been. Yes he’s taken days off, yes he’s slowed down a bit but by no means has this year shown him to be anything other than a competitor of the highest degree. A guy who makes a clubhouse better just by his daily appearance. A guy hitting 300, driving in runs, playing his defensive position well and carrying himself with head held high. A guy who has spent his career with ONE TEAM, a luxury in today’s game for any organization. What more can be asked of any player. As a Braves fan since they were in Milwaukee. I grew up idolizing Eddie Mathews, who I thought in my youth would be the Braves greatest third baseman in history. I was wrong. The Chipper Haters as a group may write what they please, but as a Braves fan I can only thank him for this one last season. A man who played to the best of his ability, at times I’m sure through pain and hurt, possibly even injury. Without his leadership by example I wonder exactly where Atlanta would be in the standings this year. He gave this wonderful interview to a group of writers, who over the years had slammed him. He did this with class, humor and wit. Not everyone will miss him but I surely will. The game of baseball will not be better because of his departure. I am still a Braves fan but now believe Chipper Jones will be the best third baseman to ever don the Braves uniform. I hope you agree however if you don’t I’ll understand.

Shaun – I’d hate to have to call in the big guns (DOB) over this “clutch” thing again.
The only counter the folks on the other side make is that people who do public speaking, performance art and athletics feel pressure in many situations, therefore some major leaguers are more clutch than others.
But there is one major flaw in this reasoning. The best of the best public speakers, the best of the best performance artists, the best of the best athletes are the ones able to overcome or thrive on the most intense pressure felt while they are performing. So the higher one rises up the ranks in these professions, the less variation in ability to overcome and/or thrive on intense pressure of doing these things. That’s what the evidence suggests. Pretty much every baseball player, given enough of a sample in any situation that we can conceive as pressure-filled, performs to his norms in those situations. I’ve yet to hear a counter-response to that. Just a repeat over and over that anyone who performs in such professions realizes that there is this pressure that one must overcome. Which doesn’t really even make an attempt to counter the point I just made.

What approach? Playing to prevent the winning run and to win instead of playing to make sure Kimbrel is available for a save situations, even if the save situation never comes?

This may sound batty, but given it’s the Brewers, I would spot-start Ben Sheets in one of the three games. As I said yesterday, I would spot-start Sheets down the stretch to keep him in the loop for a possible playoff run, and thus provide starters with an extra day of much-needed rest. Of course, all of this is predicated on the soundness of Sheets’ shoulder, which may be fatigue more than anything else.
