Maybe, Steve had other things to do…
Tears well in Avery’s eyes as Evan, an 18-year-old senior at Allen Park Cabrini, speaks of how much being on the school’s baseball and football teams have meant to him.
“It’s fun,” he said. “I liked being on the teams, it was all fun on the field, too. In football, I just like to hit people, I guess.”
As Evan spoke, Avery never took his eyes off his son, and the look on his face made it apparent that the former major league pitcher was listening to his personal miracle.
TheOnlyBravesan @6:04 am — There were still some classless fans in the crowd last night booing him when he came up to the plate and when he ran into the dugout from first. Or maybe it was just my section who was classless.
This year every winning streak was stopped when Fredi sent Constanza to the minors. I hope he’s learned his lesson and keeps him on the playoff roster. Simmons at short, Prado at third and Constanza in left will keep tihis streak going.
This year every winning streak was stopped when Fredi sent Constanza to the minors. I hope he’s learned his lesson and keeps him on the playoff roster.
Whereas I hoped he’s learned his lesson about putting the best players on the field whenever possible. With Simmons back, perhaps we will no longer be subject to the Johnson/Constanza/Francisco lineups.
Probably just a dream, though. Against righties recently, Fredo has been moving one of his LH sluggers down in the lineup and moving another one up, when both have hit LHP poorly this year. So, why would one think that lineup logic would suddenly appear during the last month?
TheOnlyBravesFan .. could have been just my section but there were some very loud boos, however I was impressed that there were also many people standing and clapping for him while wearing their blue and orange.
Cards vs Dodgers, this weekend. Big games for the wildchase.
For them… I think we’d want the Cards to win, push the Dodgers further out of contention. Allows us to clinch earlier. Even if we don’t want to face the Cards, that’s likely to happen. So, the sooner we can clinch and set up our rotation, the better.
Chipper is so slow he should be used as a pinchhitter only with runners on and two outs. With Bourn, Heyward and Canstanza in the lineup it off sets so many double play candidates.
Since July 21st, Freddie Freeman has hit .229/.365/.386 in 203 plate appearances. In his last 22 games since August 17th, he’s hit .184/.337/.382 in 95 plate appearances.
Gotta say though, I love the walk rates and plate appearances I’ve seen from Freddie. Early in the season he was swinging at everything – but he’s been very selective and working deep into the count.
And the sun comes up finding us in a good place…with the memory of Chipper’s final visit to Flushing Meadows as a player fresh on our minds; one must wonder; at 51/2 games back…are these 2012 Braves approaching the final weeks as expected?
Shall it be coined the year the Braves fail to fold–or better, refuse to fold? Only time will tell….but they are well on their way to just that. Tonight’s series opener at Milwaukee is of course, vital, we traditionally play well there….nothing wrong with continuing that trait….then on to the Ted and you know who. Mr. Uggla’s last few games being any indication, along with Mac seemingly on cue, and there certainly appears to be a lot for us to look forward to in the coming weeks–as well as the return of Andrelton Simmons….well, a good ‘no fold’ appears doable.
I want Moylan, I want Moylan……..back to the 7th & 8th frames, thank you–though it is a bit comforting to know he can work late with apparently no big issues. Eric Hinski continuing to make contact in his PH appearances sure looks better than his LF backpedal ‘panic to catch’ effort. Each Brave has to now ‘turn it up’ and do what they ‘do’ well–and let things fall where they may.
In closing, wouldn’t things get real interesting if Meds said he could pitch every other day? Well, that’s a pun filled pun pie…..rather, if we just keep our spirits up….players, fans alike….2012 can in fact be a special Braves year.
He’s back folks… Since being benched, Uggla has played 5 games, with a .389/.476/.722/1.198 line. Scored 5 runs, got 7 hits in 21 PAs, 3 doubles, 1 HR, 1 RBI, and 3 BB vs 1 K.
Him not striking out is a good sign, and from looking at his swing, he looks better. I think this time it’s for real.
Though, Uggla was hitting even before he got benched. The benching was kinda stupid. In his last 15 games, Uggla has a .283/.389/.543/.932 line…. 8 BB vs 11 Ks
Luckily, McCann and Uggla might be starting to contribute, and Heyward is having a good September, so far. It was good to see them win a game with Heyward and Freeman going oh-fer and Chipper on the bench.
Raise your hand, anybody who thought Minor would lead the staff in quality starts this year.
Me!!! (not really)… but I didn’t think that he’d have started the year as bad as he did. Was expecting a 3.70 ERA for the year. He’s had a nice turn-around though.
I’d love to hit the RHP of the Brewers hard this week. Got some tough pitching matchups the next 12 games after the Brew Crew. Think we’ll see Josh Johnson and Mark Buerhle twice each if the schedule holds. And then we face the Phils and Nats staffs for 6 games total. Be nice to see us touch up Peralta, Estrada and Gallardo.
Brewers have not lost a series since getting swept in Colorado the middle of the August (they’ve split some four-gamers, but no worse than that). It’s a cruel joke that the Braves are getting plenty of games against sub-.500 teams, but happen to be catching some of them when they are playing their best.
5.5 can be overcome, obviously. It’s certainly easier to accomplish if Uggla and McCann decide to keep playing like major leaguers and if Chipper comes back to life.
But realistically, we’ll be fortunate to escape this coming week splitting these games.
Soon, the cries to fire someone, to fire FG, to fire Terry Pendleton, Frank Wren, the usher for section 221 will begin anew, possibly as soon as tonight….
The Arizona Diamondbacks spoke to multiple teams about Justin Upton during the season, and rival executives expect they will trade the right fielder this winter. But some club officials also believe Arizona will move center fielder Chris Young, as well. Arizona could go into next season with an outfield of Gerardo Parra, Jason Kubel and Adam Eaton if it deals both Upton and Young, and the team’s clear focus will be adding a shortstop, such as the Rangers’ Elvis Andrus. – Buster Olney
Not saying either will be obtained by the Braves, but I’d expect both to be on their list. Simmons isn’t going anywhere, but I’d love to see a three team trade where the Braves get Upton(or Young, to a much lesser extent), the other team gets pitching from Atlanta, and Zona gets a SS.
Unfortunately, Arizona’s strongest spot in their minors is the same as the Braves, starting pitching. They also have a pretty good bullpen, so I’m not sure if EOF or Venters can engage them. But maybe so. I see them targeting position players for Upton. And major league players as their farm system is already strong.
I heard Leo on XM Home Plate this weekend commenting on the Strasburg situation and Avery. Leo claimed he had nothing to do with Avery’s downfall – that he had a MLB career of 1500IP.
The fact is that Avery was excellent and fell off a cliff after a couple of years under Leo. He had an increase in IP from age 20-21 (1991-1992) of over 110 IP and then another 23 in 93. He never came within 50 IP of that level (223IP at age 22) ever again and never had another season like those prior to the increase.
I know that some feel The Verducci Effect is BS, but this transcends TVE by about 75IP – I’d say it definitely had an effect on Avery’s longevity.
Hanson gonna be lit up like a tree in Toronto and the AL East… not even so sure that Yunel would be wanted by ‘Zona… he has issues. Though, I’m sure that something like that can work. Don’t see Hanson being all that alluring to the Rangers either, they have lots of injured pitchers already.
Hanson gonna be lit up like a tree in Toronto and the AL East… —-TOBF
Bank on It,
That TB Rays Running Game is Gonna Run at will on him…Not to Mention The Yankees Slapped him at their Corporate Bandbox when we played them…of course the offense gave him support that day, they do so everytime he pitches like ####
Leo claimed he had nothing to do with Avery’s downfall
Yeah right… If Leo was such a good pitching coach, why isn’t he so sought after? Don’t really put much stock into anything he says…—-TOBF
I met him in person, the dude is humble, so I usually take his thoughts as knowledgeable, but he makes up too many excuses however on the Radio when the team doesn’t show up for big games….
Sine Simmons with Wilson, Janish and Martin – 32-21
I’m not sure who pays SS really matters to the Braves’ record. I’d prefer Simmons for obvious reasons, but it apparently doesn’t make much of a difference in the record – the Braves are winning with all three (or four, or five) of them.
I’m not sure who pays SS really matters to the Braves’ record.
it would seem so, if looked at only that factor. E,g. if i remember correctly (don’t have time to look up), early when Rev was starting, the offense was clicking on all cylinders. so his deficiency compared to simmons in both offense and defense may have been covered up. similar factors could be pointed out for the records as they are with different SS.
anyway, from this point onwards, great to have simmons as he is at least as good as Janish in defense and way better than all others on offense. he should give the braves much better chance to win going forward.
cricket – Exactly – It seems to matter more if the rest of the team is hitting or pitching.
Maybe it would have meant more wins if Simmons had been in the lineup all year – no way to really tell, but the Braves keep winning despite who is playing SS and despite how much so many here believe they aren’t.
So we coulda had REV starting all year and been okay? Maybe had a bit more offense from him while we slumped? Knew it was a bad idea to bring up Simmons and then not let Pastornicky go back to SS when Simba got hurt… (complete sarcasm)
from last night. Had to attend my wife who is not well at all. Almost ran to the hospital last night, but her new infectous disease doc is wonderful. He called, and prescribed some meds to try and slow the drainage being caused by the imflammation in her sinuses. It seems to be working and she actually got about five hours sleep last night.
The swelling is pretty general including the right side of her brain, but not severe enough to operate. Lesions appear and disappear over her body which this new doc thinks are the result of some form of auto-immune problem in her system.
The pain in her ankles and feet have reduced her ability to walk and I just got her a walker this a.m.. But despite all this, I think things are better. The old GP probably would have killed her with hospitalization and anti-biotics by now.
he was the highest paid pitching coach in the majors at one time.
At one time… probably shouldn’t have been. But with all the “bad” pitching coaches now, esp. the teams with young pitchers and struggling rotations, you’d think that Leo would have more job offers if he’s such a great pitching coach. He might have been a decent one, but he made most of his fame on 3 HOFers. Those guys could’ve done that without him, in my opinion.
richbrave (can’t get used to new name after all these years) – Sorry to hear about your wife, for sure.Lots of prayers and good thoughts going out to both of you, my friend. Keep us advised on progress.
richbrave (can’t get used to new name after all these years) – Sorry to hear about your wife, for sure.Lots of prayers and good thoughts going out to both of you, my friend. Keep us advised on progress.
Leo’s strength as a pitching coach had more to do with bringing vets who had fallen off back to what made them good – at least for a season or two. His successes were Jared Wright,John Burkett and a few others like them. Not so much on the younger pitchers, though I’m pretty sure that some like Jason Marquis would have been a challenge for any pitching coach.
New doc just called and got her appointments moved up to Wed and Thurs. This guy is phenominal -name EDWARD EDMONDS if you ever need an expert on immune problems.
Thanx LEW. Time to fly folks. I’ll get back to you. Thanx again everybody. Having folks on your side almost makes me want to be a politician. After all, ’tis the season. Heh! GO BRAVES
Ef, that 7 game stretch at the start of August was rough for Freeman.
Since then he’s gotten no love from opposition defenses, but he’s still making the pitchers work: .219/.378/.453/.831 with a BABiP of .227 (Aug 20, 2012 to Sep 9, 2012).
He’s in another 7 game crapper right now, but he’s still walking like crazy.
The guy started out human, then has flipped between superman and dead on a week/two-week frequency. So, if that continues, he should be right on pace to push agains the Nats, and cool off against the Pirates, then push in the post-season.
Now, as for Ef's glee with Freeman's struggles, there's a word for that: Hater.
It would seem ridiculous to sign Carlos Q and then trade Headley.
They need some starting pitching and another middle of the order bat, but other than that, I’m liking what I see from that team. Evreth Cabrera and Alexi Amarista are good too. Great system as well.
Repost form last night cause I was nice.

I may shock some of you. First, we were lucky to win todays game. Second, TOMMY did well. Third, go to have you back BRIAN. Forth,FREDI was NOT strange with his pitching moves,I think he did well, I remember critisizeing him earlyer this season for not doing
Unbelievable how fast the summer went. Fewer than 30 games to go – sigh. I will miss Chipper but I’m sure the Mutts won’t. ha ha Well played this weekend Bravos. Hope for no letdowns in Milwaukee.
Great song to end the blog with DOB. Thanks.

Interesting – Braves record by SS-
Early season with The Rev as primary SS – 28-25
With Simmons from AS break – 18-14

Trey:
from last night.
Thanx for asking, and keep her in your prayers.
