The Ghost of Chipper Jones, and if we lose that one game playoff to a team with a worse record, we will still be at home with the other losers.
nolie: when Moylan walked the lefty, I almost had a stroke! Fredi is pretty lucky today, in the midst of a good karma wave. His idiocy leaves much to be desired.

rich, I hope your wife is doing well.

September 9th, 20126:16 pm
Great weekend of baseball. I guess Uggla is back? Holy heck – looked great. Mac as well. I fear for opposing pitchers if those two get going.
September 9th, 20126:18 pm
MiaBch, according to DOB’s series preview, we only face RHP against the Brewers. Peralta, Estrada and Gallardo.
looks like no Brewers’ lefties starting against us
September 9th, 20126:19 pm
rich, I also hope your wife is getting better.
September 9th, 20126:20 pm
James Shields with another huge game. ERA down to 3.71 in the incredibly difficult American League East. Can’t really think of a better pitcher to go after this offseason than him, if we choose to do so.
And Tommy Hanson being non-tendered and having no trade value is about the most ridiculous notion I’ve heard on here. He’s still a solid pitcher.
Ah yes, and Greinke with another strong outing for the Angels. 7 IP, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K’s.
September 9th, 20126:24 pm
Ah, I forgot to see how my boy was doing. Good to see that he’s doing well. My only fear is that now the Angels will try harder to re-sign him. He’d be our 2nd best pitcher right now, cuz Meds has been unconsciously good.
I’ll take Greinke for 5/85
September 9th, 20126:25 pm
4 straight starts of at least 7 IP and 2 ER or less for Zack Greinke.
September 9th, 20126:26 pm
Well, Tommy has had 2 decent starts now… if he keeps it up, maybe we can get Cain for him? Though I really wouldn’t want Cain (injuries). Hanson is still gonna have a worse year than last year, continuing his declining trend. Decent #5 pitcher, at this time.
noles, maybe Uggla really was back? Yikes. Great weekend.
September 9th, 20126:28 pm
Very good to see 3 RHP’s for Milwaukee this week.
September 9th, 20126:29 pm
Uggla was coming back before he got benched… he had a nice little streak going before that.
I would too… would be hesitant to take it to 6 for just over 100, or even 5 for 90, but even those aren’t all too bad. We keep our prospects and get a solid pitcher. I imagine that Greinke will get something in that range, can’t see him being paid over 20mil.

With this lineup, one piece depends on another. If Uggla’s resurgence is truly legit. If McCann’s shoulder can take to cortisone and stay pain free down the stretch. If Heyward & Freeman can respond positively to Uggla’s & McCann’s uptick. If Simmons can start hitting out of the box tomorrow and turn the SS position into a hitting positive. If a Reed/Costanza LF platoon can prove useful. If the LF platoon can allow Prado to spell Chipper at 3B down the stretch in order to keep him fresh and relatively pain-reduced. If Bourn can have a better September than he did last year…
Lotta if’s, lotta moving parts.

We need to sweep the nationals next week if we are to have any shot at the division. It is a must sweep series for us and ofcourse we can’t lose ground this week to the Nationals. If we go into next Friday down 4.5 and proceed to sweet the Nationals then we would be 1.5 games out with 15 to play.

Man, you know things are going well when there are only 5 pages of comments…
Great win by the Braves…hope they can keep it going in Beertown, and then the Nats!

I missed the game, went to Carowinds toady. So fun.
У меня есть две сильные руки.

If Uggla and Mac stay hot, the Braves will be a very dangerous team. GO BRAVES!

yes it is (My brain hurts now)

It’s easy. I just copy and paste to Google Translate. No brain strain.
September 9th, 20127:11 pm
oh, me too. but I’m watching football & tennis
September 9th, 20127:14 pm
My old brain couldn’t handle that.
September 9th, 20127:16 pm
I’m just watching American Pickers.
September 9th, 20127:28 pm
tennis over. Watching Niners- Packers
September 9th, 20127:41 pm
Are you and VJ on twitter?
I didn’t know Carowinds was still open. I used to go there a lot in the early 80’s when I was stationed at Fort Jackson. I even worked there on the weekends, for a time. I had a friend who ran one of those old time photo shops where you dress up in period costumes with props and have your photo taken. Used to go help her out when I didn’t have some sort of duty.

New power ranking for this week: 1. Washington. 2. TEX. 3. Cincinnati. 4. Oakland. 5. Angels. 6. Braves. 7. Yankees. 8. BALT. 9. SF. 10. TB.
Believe the Braves were 10th last week…
Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN
In James Shields’s last eight starts, the Rays are 7-1, and he’s got a 1.90 ERA; he’s averaged about 7 2/3 innings per outing in that time.
September 9th, 20127:48 pm
Me too, @DiamondbackMac.
September 9th, 20127:51 pm
Matt Chernoff @RealMattlanta
The #Braves panic club & fire Fredi crew has gotten so quiet. Atl 7-2 in Sept & won 5 in a row. Healthy starters, rested pen = no collapse.
If only that was true on this blog… There will be no collapse folks, it’ll be clinched soon.
September 9th, 20127:53 pm
TOBF,sounds almost Medlen-esqe.
September 9th, 20127:55 pm
Love it! I would love it, DOB, if you could work on a Chipper retrospective to release once the season ends. Kind of a scrapbook of sorts. I don’t know if the AJC bosses will allow it to be one of those Sunday paper all-color inserts or not. But, I’d love to have something tangible that I could keep and hold on to… — Tami
You’ll be pleased to hear it’s happening. We’ve got a special section coming out that last weekend of the season.
September 9th, 20127:56 pm
I think I just tweeted you
September 9th, 20127:57 pm
Will it be available in some form online? I’d love to see it
September 9th, 20127:58 pm
Agree… oh, and btw, the SP that I would like the Braves to sign this offseason, had a few stretches like the one Shields has had, last year. He had 1 good 8 game stretch of dominance, and 2 5-game stretches of dominance (all with better ERAs and similar IPs, oppo. stat lines). Greinke ain’t a bad pitcher y’all. A borderline #1, but a solid #2. We need a pitcher like him next year.
I just gotta say what a HUGE win for my Niners. To go into Lambeau Field and lead from wire to wire against the Packers…doesn’t get much better than that.
September 9th, 20128:01 pm
That was a great win… I enjoyed it too (as a Falcons fan, I hate the Packers with a passion). Hope to see y’all in the Conference game, in Atlanta of course.
September 9th, 20128:03 pm
If this is a preview of the Niners season, I expect any playoff game to be going through San Francisco
September 9th, 20128:09 pm
Finally home from my drive home from Citi Field. Easy drive home – finally figured a route of NYC where there isn’t really much bumper to bumper traffic. Not expecting a super sunny day but came home with a burnt face and chest, oww. Not enough sunscreen. But we got a win
I’m 5-4 this year and have one more game this season, the last regular season game in Pittsburgh. Can’t wait to eat their park BBQ – best park food I’ve had so far on my travels.
Great DOB Blog read David!
September 9th, 20128:12 pm
Podemnik and DiamondbackMac i agree with you; I saw Puttin: fishing, hunting, flay planes, judo and president of Russia; but Martin Prado is better than him.
September 9th, 20128:15 pm
Brava- thanks, was quick and no traffic.
Will it be available in some form online? I’d love to see it — cabravesfan
Yes, I’m sure the stories will be posted online.
September 9th, 20128:18 pm
Hope to make it 6-4, Kat… a .500 record isn’t much fun…
Was on pace to have a winning year last year when I went to games, then September came… I went to 8 losses and not 1 win.
That would be great. thanks!
September 9th, 20128:19 pm
NOW I’m getting excited because McCann and Uggla looks somewhat normal again.
September 9th, 20128:23 pm
Don’t see a tweet from you.

VIDEO: Cardinals-Seahwaks replacement refs lose track of timeouts, give Seattle an extra one, then lie about it http://deadsp.in/QuLl1Z
Another issue with the replacement refs… they’ll get it together soon, I hope. They didn’t hurt my Falcons today, so not too concerned yet!
Try Ken McPherson@DiamondbackMac.
Awesome sports day. Wooh.
September 9th, 20128:26 pm
McCann is a huge piece to your lineup. How have we done so well with him so bad is amazing. I know he’s still hitting for some power, but pretty much everything else is down across the board. If he and Uggla get it together we can go a long way.
September 9th, 20128:28 pm
Look again (I don’t tweet under this name)
Yes it was a good day (and a good weekend )
September 9th, 20128:30 pm
I may shock some of you. First, we were lucky to win todays game. Second, TOMMY did well. Third, go to have you back BRIAN. Forth,FREDI was NOT strange with his pitching moves,I think he did well, I remember critisizeing him earlyer this season for not doing it.
September 9th, 20128:31 pm
Good to have BRIAN back*
September 9th, 20128:35 pm
3 hrs ago I got a retweet from DOB and 37 minutes ago I got a tweet from DOB. That’s all I have for the last 3 hours.
Did SF beat GB to finish your good weekend? I am about to go check the late football scores.
It’s a little strange to be seeing good passes coming off of the arm of a Denver QB…
September 9th, 20128:36 pm
If the Giants beat the Dodgers tonight, the Braves will have a 7 game lead for a wild card spot. 7 game lead with 21 games to play.
I know it’s going to the right place…huh…
September 9th, 20128:37 pm
Yes they did
September 9th, 20128:38 pm
Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN
Good news about Brandon McCarthy: He is out of the intensive care unit, and continues to make progress in his recovery.
September 9th, 20128:39 pm
Glad to hear that about McCarthy.
September 9th, 20128:42 pm
Finally found it. I’m just now learning the system. I had to look under @connect and “Mentions”.
McCarthy has been tweeting and joking, so it seems like his mental functions are ok. Hopefully he will be able to recover fully and play baseball again someday

September 9th, 20128:47 pm
FREDI, PLEASE from now till end of season play SIMMONS at SS, MARTIN at 2ND, JUAN C or JOHNSON LF and sit ARNOLD UGGLA. of course this would be when CHIPPER is playing.
September 9th, 20128:48 pm
Braves were 82-59 in 2011 through 141 games. 81-60 through 141 games this year, one game behind last years pace.
September 9th, 20128:49 pm
Outta here, check scores and bets, then watch PEYTON. Have a good one, nite y’all.
September 9th, 20128:51 pm
Sit Dan Uggla, who in his last 11 games is hitting .324/.378/.647? Or in the last 5 games is at .400/.471/.733? That Dan Uggla?
September 9th, 20129:02 pm
Could you ask Fredi, when you have a chance, if he plans to let Sheets make a relief appearance sometime during the Milwaukee series. It would be cool to see the reception he gets, I think.
Nova Scotia Steve
I’d just like to say great coverage on Chipper. Excellent angle’s and perspective all season long. Nobody can complain about the lack of coverage given to the Braves icon by the local paper.
It’s been done and done in an extremely professional manner. You’ve brought the fans so close to the action, especially fans who don’t live close to Atlanta but are die hard fans.
This is a significant moment in the history of the organization and you are capturing it perfectly for us all.
Thanks. This is starting to get tough for all long time fans.
I must say Chipper joining twitter his last season has been extremely special for all of the fans as well.
You get another totally different side of Chipper on the TWITTA
September 9th, 20129:03 pm
George, why would we sit Dan Uggla when he’s finally gotten hot? Good grief, I’m glad you aren’t the manager.
September 9th, 20129:15 pm
I would ne happy to buy and send you a hard copy. BTW I went 8-3 on my bets, up $235.
September 9th, 20129:17 pm
Appreciate the offer, but paper tends to get lost here. I will read online Thanks!
George did a “Hit & Run,” there regarding Uggs….I hope he understands Uggla will be used till seasons end and beyond. Barring a complete meltdown, we’ll be seeing plenty of play from Dan. He has shown again he can really smack a baseball—we need those ‘HR smackers,”

You got off to a bad start with CHIPPER in ST, but I must AGREE with the above, you have been excellent with your coverage. I never bothered with twitter till CHIPPER did.
September 9th, 20129:24 pm
Happy for your ‘Niners, except I picked the GB Defense on my fantasy team. BIG FAIL!
September 9th, 20129:25 pm
….and the Falcons kicker. I have two kickers on my team. Unconventional, but they got me a lot of points this week!
What kind of reception did Chipper get in his final game in NY? Couldn’t watch here in VA.
September 9th, 20129:28 pm
DOB:Can out of towners purchase that edition? And if so,could you post, the how too’s?
September 9th, 20129:33 pm
You really picked Green Bay’s defense? They were not particularly good last year and were not particularly good today…
September 9th, 20129:34 pm
Yeah, I really didn’t do my homework prior to my draft. Just didn’t have time. I just figured “Hey, it’s Green Bay….they gotta be good…” whooops!
If I had a choice between Grienke & Shields for the off season, I’d take Shields.
The inconsistency and social anxiety stuff on Grienke is a red flag for a mid market team.
And I would not touch Hamilton at all.
Cannot afford an expensive mistake.
September 9th, 20129:36 pm
I learned my lesson about Green Bay’s defense last year. They totally let me down week after week. Went with the Niners D this year.
September 9th, 20129:39 pm
they are good because they can usually outscore everyone. But they can’t run the ball to save their lives (Aaron Rodgers was their leading rusher with 27 yards today- although, in fairness, the Niners had the best rush D last year) and if they play a great D, like the Niners, they have problems because they really can’t stop anyone either
