Sometimes, rare times, something works, and you’re still left wondering what was he thinking!
When a closure gets the win and the setup man gets the save, it is normally because the closure blew the first save opportunity. But, not today! The closer was used as the setup man in a tie game, and the setup man was used to save a one-run lead.
It worked — barely!
Had it failed, recriminations would have followed Fredi Gonzalez everywhere and for many days. I’m glad it worked, but it was among the most bizzare uses of a bullpen I have ever seen and without some degree of explanation, remains highly questionable despite it working.
Peter Moylan was interviewed after the game and was asked when he and Kimbrel knew of Fredi’s choice. His reply, “When I saw Kimbrel walking out to be honest with you!” He laughed and so did the interviewer, and I did also. The speculation among the TV crew was Fredi wanted to give Kimbrel two innings of work, but he had to pinch hit for Kimbrel and could not have done that.
It worked — that’s the best thing I can say for it!
So, a few notes about the game in my opinion… since I wasn’t here today.
JuanFran looked horrible again… kinda like how he looked early this year. 0-4 with 4 Ks… Yeesh!
Tommy was decent today, still couldn’t leave the 5th. Had better command, and walked away allowing just 2 runs. Decent start. Good job Tommy. He might be coming around.
The use of our closer in a tie game on the road sure hurt us today…
I wasn’t a big fan of Moylan finishing the game (since he’s just coming back). I’d have preferred Durbin. But hey, we won, so who am I to complain?
Got the sweep, 5 straight wins, and we continue to make ground against the Nats and other WC contenders… not much longer before we clinch.
Me either… not even a big Gearrin fan, but I’m growing into a fan of his. Probably cuz he’s younger and hasn’t had the injuries Peter has. Still, I wouldn’t want either of them to close.
I would take Moylan against the best right handed hitter in the league over Moylan vs. the worst left handed hitter in the league. He made the wright move my walking him.
Braves are putting a wide bit of distance between them and the rest of the Wild Card challengers.
Cards: 5 games down
Pirates & Dodgers: 6 games down
BTW: I count the games down in the loss column because that better reflects games left to be played. It’s also used in the formula for magic numbers.
There are only four teams in baseball with over 80 wins. The Braves are one of them. Surprisingly, the AL East has none of them! The NL East is the only division with two.
Wright sure did help us with that last pitch though… thanks for the pop-up bud!
The team’s best reliever should be used to get the most important outs. Sometimes, and only sometimes, the most important outs are the last ones.
Agree… from late 7th (occasionally) but definitely from the 8th on, you’re closer should be ready to go. The SV stat isn’t all that big. It’s a bigger deal to keep a game tied in the 8th or 9th (esp. on the road) than it is to close the game when leading by 1-3 runs.
I need to start a rivalry with Nolie and TOBF who always edge me on the number of posts….One of these days I am going to be ahead of U guys. You both deserve to be Booed LOL.
Well, I had an off-day today, coming in now as a late inning replacement. I’m sure you can beat me
Braves are putting a wide bit of distance between them and the rest of the Wild Card challengers.
Which is why the race is almost over… we’re winning games this year that we lost last year. We’re already 7-2 in September this year… We can set our sights on making 1 last push for the Division title… need to keep up the pressure on the Nats and then sweep them this weekend.
Good win today, especially with Tommy pitching. I think the Nats are at the start of a September collapse. Their schedule is much tougher than the Braves from here out.
Provided the Braves can finish strong I think they have a decent shot at catching the Nats.
Did he cause us to win all those games… or was he just on the teams that won those games. Kinda like Uggla during his slump. He was on teams that were winning day in and out, though he wasn’t doing much to cause the team to win all those games.

3-0 with 9 to go. We run the tsable against the METS and FISH and we’re at 90 wins. Win three against the N.L. Central and 2 of 6 against the NATS-PHILLIES we’re at 95 wins. Nobody is gonna’ beat that except the NATS ………… maybe.
Keep winning the games we should win and puit the pressure on the NATS. Let’s see if they fold. Great win today.
REDSKINS and RGIII punish the SAINTS for having the temerity to showing up. Chopped liver ‘AINT’S,’ heh!
Sometimes, and only sometimes, the most important outs are the last ones.
problem is that you don’t know what will be the important outs till they appear. The outs in the ninth/10th might be even more important than what you used your closer on, and alas he is no longer available. almost happened today, and easily could have.
a few here advocate for that approach, mostly saber-guys, but it will be a long time if ever b4 it becomes all that common IMO
the fact that they had to make a choice to walk a mediocre lefty to get to a superior hitter like Wright is the crux of the problem. Crazy even if it works
SIMMONS leaves for the big club with a bang, but the pitching can’t stand up and the ‘CATS eventually lose allowing a run to the home team in the bottom of the eighth. SIMMONS doubles in a run in the top of the ninth, and is left stranded on 2B.
