**FREDI GONZALEZ
“We swung the bats good. Nice to see Danny keep swinging good, and McCann had a nice day. Everybody, really. We were able to add on some runs late.”
On Medlen
“It’s a shame his outing got cut short by the hour and 15-minute rain delay. He did a nice job, and Avilan did a nice job picking up those two innings. It was a good win.”
“Medlen was good. You’re not going to take a chance running him out there after [long rain delay].”
On winning streak with Medlen
“It seems like the guys like to play behind him, for a lot of reasons. Seems like we talk about those reasons every fifth day.”
On back of bullpen not being available, Kimbrel and O’Flaherty getting a rest day
“In the seventh inning we had a five-run lead or a six-run lead and were trying to manufacture some runs, just because of that. You don’t have O’Flaherty, you don’t have Kimbrel. We were trying to keep adding runs because we didn’t have those guys.”
On getting offense today, not just all pitching
“This type of game, they’re not going to come very often. I’ve always said, I’d rather be a pitching and defensive team that playing slow-pitch softball. But it sure is nice every once in a while. This is what we’re capable of – not 11 runs, but we’re capable of four, five or six, giving our pitchers a little breather.”
Good signs from McCann and Uggla?
“It sure is. And I’ve been encouraged. I keep telling you guys, I think sometimes you think I’m crazy, but I’ve been encouraged. We’re such a results-oriented society that if it’s not 2-for-4 or 3-for-4, people look at you like your crazy. But the at-bats have been good for Mac, and Danny’s at-bats have been better. Now they’re getting results.”
**KRIS MEDLEN
On his outing
“Rain-shortened definitely sucks. You’ve still got some more in the tank. I definitely wasn’t as crisp as I was in the past however many starts. But six innings, two runs, you can’t really argue with that. Everything felt pretty good when I needed it, and the offense scores that many runs, you get pretty excited and want to go out there and keep getting them back in the dugout.”
On McCann and Uggla coming around
“You take it a day at a time. You don’t get too excited, because he could go 0-for-5 or 0-for-7 in an extra-inning game tomorrow. Both had great days. I know Mac – I was hoping for a triple just so I could see him leg it out.” [laughter]
“But it’s great to see. They’re two huge guys in our lineup, and we need them. We need them to win. So it’s definitely awesome to see.”
On his RBI double
“I have been scuffling, it’s safe to say, at the plate. So I just kind of wanted to simplify and make contact. It was a curveball down the middle, probably the only pitch I could hit. I just put a good swing on it. I think the wind might have done some weird stuff with it, too. But I’ll take it.”
On the team winning streak in his starts
“Like I said, I just try to simplify, try to be aggressive. I wasn’t as crisp. I had a couple of walks or whatever, but they felt terrible, not like I was just [barely] missing. I pulled some [pitches]. It’s not like I only threw two bad pitches, but the two that were hit was a curveball that hung up to Duda and a change-up to Cedeno that all pitchers know, when you’re in the middle of your wind-up, that, oh, this is going to be bad.”
On team winning four in a row and six of past seven
“It’s awesome. There was a lot of talk before about us scuffling or struggling, and it was like three or four games in a row. It’s good. You just take it a day at a time. Be happy about this one, but in less than 12 hours from now or something, we’ll be back playing a baseball game. Gotta enjoy it tonight and take it to them tomorrow.”
On Mets being the last team to score an earned run against him (Aug. 11) before today
“It looked like they were looking for different stuff today and they were trying to make adjustments since the last time I faced them. I knew the last [earned run] I gave up was against them. They’ve got some scrappy guys in their lineup, and some other guys who can do some damage. So you just kind of attack each guy differently and kind of mix it up. Like I said, I saw them making some adjustments and I had to try to do the same.”
**BRIAN McCANN
On his four-hit, four-RBI game
“It felt like it was the first time in a while that I actually made an impact on the game, so it felt good.”
On Fredi saying last week he thought you were closer than you thought to getting your swing back
“I mean, it’s just a fine line with me. Once I got the second shot, it calmed it down a lot more to where I feel like I can do more with the bat and hit the proper way and I’m hoping to continue and keep it going.”
Does a game like this also help you mentally, a confidence boost?
“It’s huge. It’s been a rough year for sure. I’m hoping to help this team down the stretch, and into the postseason.”
On week the team’s had, winning a lot of games without offense, scoring big today
“It’s been a great week. I thought we played great. When we haven’t hit well with runners in scoring position, we’ve had our pitchers pick us up. For me it doesn’t matter how you do it, it’s just getting it done. Because it’s a 162-game season and you’re going to go through stretches like that. It just happens that it’s in September and people want to make it more of a big deal that it really is. But yeah, our pitchers picked us up. And there’s been times over the season where our offense has picked up our pitching. We have a complete team here.”
On Medlen and Braves pitching
“We’re throwing someone out there who gives us a chance to win, every single night. It’s a luxury to have. This game’s won on pitching. And then you put our bullpen in the mix, probably the best bullpen in the game. We have a complete team here. We have speed, we have power, we have great pitching, and we’ve just got to keep winning ballgames.”
On Uggla warming up at plate
“He’s looking really good. And he’s the type of player that can ride this thing out and put us on his back for the rest of the season. We’ve seen him do it many, many times. And you get him clicking and myself clicking, we’re going to be a tough team to beat.”

You know, in hindsight, deeming when Uggla’s slump was over was very easy. We just had to wait until Uggla told the media, “I’m back!”

Funny that with 2 good games, we are sure they are back. While after 130, we were sure they weren’t. Let’s go for a bigger sample size. We were sure Sheets was the real deal when he was 3-0. Then, after he was 4-4 most don’t want him back.
Baseball is a fickle game. You have to prove it instead of saying “I’m back”.
Hal: Yeah, the career stats don’t lie. 180 K’s and a .230 year followed by a .214 are really good for 65 mil. Really good.

Sorry Hal the hardest playing players on the team in order are. Chipper, Prado, Heyward, Freeman. Got to give Chipper respect for having old knees and playing great through it. Prado because he’s just awesome. Heyward and Freeman because they are young men playing an old mans game. They’re consistency throughout the season has helped the Braves more than any one player on the team.

I dont know exactly what game youre watching Mo….but baseball is NOT an old mans game. Just because Chipper is still out there doin it at 40, and Jeter is havin a career year at 38, does not make it an old mans game. In fact, if youre over 35, youre basically right at the end. GOLF is an old mans game. And I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but Uggla plays way harder than Freddie and Heyward. How many ground balls does Heyward run out? Half, maybe. How many does Freeman run out? Almost zero. How many does Uggla run out? almost every single one he hits. And does it while slumping most of the season.

ohhhhYEAH- do you watch baseball? do you know how many infield hits Heyward has got this year? know what your talking about before you spew junk please. Heyward runs out many ground balls and gets on base a good bit. Plus he’s a monster, more of a complete player than Uggla could ever be. Uggla has power. Heyward has 5 tools to use.

A men, Teddy B. Heyward has beat the throw to first on routine ground balls to second base. Not saying Prado or Uggla do not hustle, but no one hustles like Heyward. Also goes 1st to 3rd better than anyone and plays every play on defense.

It’s interesting how the naysayers don’t show up to criticize after well played games or when the Braves are on a roll. If they were fans you would think they would be happy “their team” was winning and previously slumping players are hitting or pitching well. Just like some bloggers who were highly critical of Chipper early in the season until his superb play made them look stupid to continue their rants, they have now moved on to other targets such as Uggla and McCann. They quit posting when they can’t find something to complain about. Some peoples lot in life is to always view a situation from the negative perspective instead of seeing the positive. The Braves have the 4th best record in baseball but unfortunately are in the same division with the team with the best record. It doesn’t diminish what the Braves have done so far this year.

And to the 12:50 post above. You and I are obviously watching 2 different teams. Heyward hustles down the line on every ground ball and has beaten out several for infield hits.

I remember Heyward being lax in RF and misplaying a ball. Dan Uggla hustles more than anyone on the team. He may not be faster than some , and thus may not get as many infield hits, but he always hustles. I know most are down on him because of his sub-par season, but the physical effort is 100%.
And whoever called this an “old man’s game” is clueless.

I do remember a time last year when Heyward was having his struggles, so many folks on this blog were down on him, I confess, I got down on ‘em, now that possibly J-Hey has figured this mechanics, discipline thing out, & comes w/ maturation, skies the limit. I’ve also criticized Uggs, some last year, this year, I do see the Hustle, I’m pull’n for him to get back the production he had when he was w/ the fish, cause’ he put up decent numbers, mabey he can still be clutch in what’s left in this month & post season. I’m a die-hard fan wanting, hopeful for this team to shock-awe the world. Yeah, I’ve criticized, but out of frustration, I feel most fans do the same for their teams, but still hope they pull it out.

Heyward is faster than uggla so using infield hits to judge how hard they hustle is stupid. Both guys give their all with a slip up every now and again. I’ve seen uggla hustle hard on pop ups, grounders, etc. His performance may not be up to par with heyward’s, but day in and day out he goes 100%.
Last season and the beginning of this season people were saying heyward was lazy and I even recall some clown recommending we trade heyward and minor for bj upton this season. Boy am I glad Wren is the GM over a lot of these bloggers.

I remember more than one clown suggesting that the Braves trade Heyward and Minor.
In fact there have many, many clowns recommend that the Braves trade almost every player on the rooster, at one time or another throughout this season.
How many clowns were there that wanted to trade the whole team and start over during this season?
Especially after the the Braves started the season 0-4.
I doubt that you will see many of those clowns today, but if the Braves lose a couple of games in a row(probably just one loss), they will be here, in force, bitching and moaning, crying and whining.

Good game all around by the guys. Great approaches by Uggla and Mac. I completely agree with McCann. We get them going, we will be tough to beat. Those were auto outs it seemed every day for a bit. I know Mac is battling through that injury, but Uggla looked lost. Not going to overreact, but it’s encouraging to see Dan swing the bat well lately, and Mac exploded today. Great effort overall by Meds and BP as well.
Let’s sweep em!!

Teddy B. As I said, less than HALF. I didn’t say Heyward runs out zero ground balls. But he usually doesnt unless he thinks there is a chance of an infield hit, and then he runs, and he has legged out a lot of those. But just because he runs out the ones he thinks he has a hit on doesnt mean he runs them all out. but thank you for your input.

How many ground balls has Chipper ran out over the last five years, from my observation not a very high percentage. That does not send a good message to the rest of the team.

I was once a clown, until I checked into Clowns Anonymous. At CA, I realized that I should not advocate serious changes with the Braves. I realized that I should be less critical and more patient with the Braves. Finally, I realized that past Braves’ heartbreak does not mean I should expect more of the same.
Seriously, I am very impressed with what the braves have done so far. I know not everything is perfect, but the team has fought hard to erase last year’s collapse.
