Tailgating with the preppies at the University of Richmond today. Mighty GARDNER-WEBB of the BIG SOUTH conference will be invading ROBINS stadium. I suppose we have to endure such as our shiny new head coach is a pick from LIBERTY in that conference. RICHMOND is pretty bad. A long ,long way from the National Championship team of 2008.

BRAVES with the third best record in baseball right now. Hoping that remains true thru the balance of the season. Got to beat those NATS five out of six for that likelihood. I think the approach to their pitching has been good for the most part.

Anybody else see a pattern here of opposing teams running unknown and seldom used pitchers at the BRAVES……and being successful……especially in the opening games of series?

And then there’s the constant barrage of LH’ers. Any LH’er will do, even those of the opposition’s AAA call-ups.

Nice to see FG’s slight adjustment to taking MAC and other LH out of the line-up and inserting REED JOHNSON, ROSSY in has helped from that end.

My grandson will be playing back-up SS this season and occasionally used as a closer. Going to get with GUY HANSON to learn ‘the thing’, a pitch that’s similar to a knuckler in it’s movement, but not. Puts less stress on the arm and elbow. And since he’ll be facing only a few batters, combining that with his fastball should be effective. You’ve got to have big hands to deal with that pitch however.

Old-school domination. By two, yes folks, two denizens. First time in the history of the MIB. (Or at least in the history I can recall, which admittedly, is not much.) Well done, boys.

Rich, I’d've given you the win, but your new name confuses me. So, VJ it is. Though, the night’s best has to be Bobby H. “I’ll tell you how to save $30!” Gold, I tell you. Gold.

Thanx man, I enjoy doing the reports on the young guys coming up. I think for those who are fans of the BRAVES or becoming so, getting a continuous feed on their development is critical to understanding where the needs of the team can be filled from the organization. Actually, CHARLIE MORTON set me off on this idea. I remember almost no one knew where he came from, and had no idea of his development. Just thought that wrong being the major BRAVES blog. Asked the blog-meister and he generously acquiesed so here we are years later…..wow. Time flies……..

Still got five with METS. I’m for the six-game sweep myself. That alone would get us to the threshold of the play-offs. Six more with the FISH. 12-0 against would leave us in the drivers seat for the play-offs. Only six more with PHILLY and NATS 2-4 there and a split of six with the N.L. Central would give us 95 wins. Got to be a shoo-in for the W.C. and if the NATS should stumble at all….well who knows what the next three and a half weeks woill bring.

Wild card is ours…. sweep the Nats and just play a bit better than them in the other games, we have a small, but still existent, chance at the division.

“I’m back” was kind of comical. Sorry Dan, one game does not mean you are “back”.

More than 1 game…. he’s hit 3-4 HR is his last 10 games, good OBP and SLG, and has been hitting the ball hard lately. Some have just been caught. He’s not K’ing as much, making more contact. That’s a good sign. And if you watch his swing, it’s a bit shorter. He’ll be fine.

Just rather not hear that from him. Saw the tweet from DOB about 2 minutes after the last out. Thought that was a little much. How about have a big series or two and then declare “I’m back”.

I haven’t railed on Uggla at all. At all. But I thought that was a little strange. He’s had big games during this horrid stretch and hasn’t built upon it. Let’s see a weeks worth of performance before he beats his chest is all I’m sayin…….

VaBravesFan

September 8th, 2012
11:06 am

Kinda hard not to pound on Uggla tho, he’s our highest paid player and was considered a huge pick up for the Braves, racking up consistent numbers year after year in Florida. While many would agree that maybe we’d regret the 4th and 5th years of the deal, we still expected a guy who would play 155+ games, smack 30+ bombs and OPS over 800. in the middle of our lineup.

Before becoming a Brave. (Average Season)

155 Games 263/349/488/837 34 Doubles 31 HR 93 RBI

Since becoming a Brave. (Total)

In 294 Games 223/323/422/745 46 Doubles 54 HR 147 RBI

Only improvement is how much he is walking and actually has produced a positive dWAR for only the 2nd time in his career. Thats it. But hopefully he can bounce back and get back to slugging.

nolie

September 8th, 2012

VaBravesFan

Cause at this point with Uggla, who knows. Maybe the best we can hope for is a 2011 version of him with out the massive slumps. Cause atleast last season he slugged and provided massive power. Which I believe is more valuable than him drawing more walks than normal. We have alot of good hitters who provide good OBP’s, we need Uggla to succeed as a classic slugger.

Lew

September 8th, 2012
11:12 am

I have no idea if Uggla is bck or not, but sure hope so./ That being said, he has hits in 7 of his past 10 games and has 3XBH in his past two games. He has not struck out in his past five games and has actually hit a couple of balls to the right side of the infield.

Back? We’ll see. However, there are at least a couple of signs indicating he could be right.

But, Nolieee, over the course of 162 outings; one can’t inordinately declare that the way he did; his slump has consumed the majority of a closely watched season and his lack of ‘bounce back’ gives ample rise to the concerns and scutiny of the fans.

Heyward is hitting .300/.358/.548 in his last 355 plate appearances since June 5th.

the first step in getting something done is to envision it as already accomplished

If it wasn’t Uggla, and maybe someone like Francouer after a big game in 2009 when he sucked, what would your thoughts be on it? I get that he’s trying to “pump himself up” – but it’s 2 minutes after the last out and I see a tweet from DOB with Uggla saying “I’m back”.

Just sort of a believer in sample size and not going nuts over one games performance. Need to see more than that is all. Weird in my opinion to see a 719 hitter saying I’m back.

Lew

September 8th, 2012
11:17 am

Well, like nolie said – If you give him grief when he doesn’t come through, you’ve got to give him credit when he does and last night he was a major factor in another Braves’ win – no matter what he did in the rest of the season.

No way to change the past several months, but right now would be a great time to have Dan “Back”..
