I believe the Nationals call to end Strasburg’s season is what will keep them from the world series. Johnson said Strasburg was “emotional” about the decision.
“I know he’s been struggling with it for weeks,” Johnson said. “I know he doesn’t sleep good thinking about it. Shoot, I’ve heard so much advice from every ex-pitcher, every guru on the matter.”
Johnson sensed “from the first pitch” Friday night that Strasburg was out of sorts because of the shutdown hanging over his head. Johnson consulted this morning with General Manager Mike Rizzo and pitching coach Steve McCatty and finalized his decision.

Hi y’all
Do we get our SS back today? Guess not according to ncbravesfan90s posted lineup ai 12:19. Come of FRANK he is ready, he homered last night. FRANK we need to be playing our best players, this is the playoff hunt.
I feel for Chipper. IMO, he’s exceeded the number of games I thought he could play this year. Unfortunately, we have a 40 year old forced to carry this team for quite some time this season – and the wear and tear is starting to show. Lately, Heyward has shown some flashes of having what it takes to carry this ballclub, but he is not there yet. Ditto Freeman, to a smidge of a lesser extent. As far as I’m concerned, Bourn can leave after this season, and Uggla can do the same. The rest of the 1-to-8 are made up of hurt or incapable ne’er-do-well’s who are incapable of being playoff-caliber contributors. Unless McCann goes to the AL, he is done as an AS-caliber catcher & hitter, and is not worth the option for next year – under any scenario.
I mean this. Uggla can go all Pujols in the next month, and I would still jettison his tail out of Atlanta to the first idiot that’ll take him. Another vulgar and idiotically pathetic waste of money by Franky-boy.
I don’t think Chipper’s “carrying the team.” He’s doing his part, sure, but several players (pitching especially lately) have been pulling their own weight.
Of the Braves’ 584 RBIs (sorry Shaun), Chipper has knocked in 58 of them for 9% of the Braves’ RBIs

Come of FRANK he is ready, he homered last night
So did Uggla…doesn’t mean he should be hitting cleanup yet.
*******************************************************
Do you prefer a .208 hitter playing second instead of MARTIN [second being his best position]? We neen SIMMIONS back. One night does not make DAN great.
The whole thing about the Uggla post-game comment–and, really it’s the same old thing here on the blog–the friendly dissection of a poster’s words which may or may not be laudable.
It is what it is….but, in a pragmatically theatrical maner—rather bizarre IMO.
We all like McCann, but he looks like sh** and has for too long. All the eye problems and his shoulder have made him look like he could be at the end of a great career already. I’d give him another season to see, after that I would cut the ties.
With the money saved by not paying Chipper, McCann, and Lowe in 2013. With an opportuinty to not waste money on JJ or Hanson – I mean, really, they both need to go far away – as well as avoiding another failed Wren gambit by not signing Bourn, the Braves can go out and truly make an attempt to sign/trade for a truly-proven MVP bat that can play 150 games in the OF, that can hit for power AND high OBP, and has a PROVEN track record of high performance.
I admit I was at first happy with the Uggla trade. But I am not a baseball GM. The chance to see Uggla down here in Miami showed a streaky player who never hit for average or high OBP, struck out a lot, and played suspect D. If I had all that info at my disposal as a GM, I would’ve never made him the highest paid 2B in the league.
The time has come for the Braves to STOP paying significant millions to players who have significant flaws in their game. The time has come to stop paying significant millions in the hopes that speculative garbage can become playoff gold. Yeah, that means a $20 million-plus contract. But that’s the game. If the Braves want to get past WC status, they need their own Cabrera or Kemp, or the stands will continue to stay empty, as well as their playoff chances in their near future.
“I’m back. Just because I hit the ball hard, if I have a bad night and go 0-for-4, it’s not about feeling for it anymore, it’s not about searching for it. It’s here. This is me. And like I said, I’m going to battle and compete the way I know how to.”
*****************************************
DAN’s qoute last night. GOOD GRIEF what a ego this guy has. he is wierd, one night is NOT a comeback. I USED to like this guy.
Uggla is a head case, as they say in sports with guys like this. He fits the term to a tee. He’s really his own worst enemy as you can see with his words.
I’m not sure what that quote has to do with ego- sounds like he’s feeling better at the plate than he has in a while and I think it has shown a bit in the last few games. Even when he is making outs, he is getting better contact then he has in a while. It may not be much, but it’s a sign of hope.
Dan Uggla is one fortunate sonofagun. He has to be the luckiest Rule Five player in the history of the game. However, his run of luck is over; unfortunately – and again! – it happens on our very shiny dime.
And people wonder why I loath franky “Bird-Brain” wren.
But I would definitely start Uggla right now. He CAN carry an offense for a stretch. McCann is another story. He’s battling injury and I still think his vision is messed up and he won’t admit it. His swings look funny which tells me his sight it not right.
For all that McCann’s done for the Braves (I dunno…6 ASGs and 5 Silver Sluggers in his first 6.5 seasons. No big deal), and as a fan favorite who’s great in the community, I think Wren owes McCann the benefit of the doubt of a slump that’s been fueled by injury.
I just don’t think he would bother hiding it if his eyes were bothering him. Everyone already knows he’s got a bum shoulder. No reason to hide any other problems, if they exist
cab, he looks awful. You can’t deny how bad the guy has been really since late last year when he even admitted he felt a big part of the teams big collapse. Yes, we all like BM, but what a huge mess he’s been on offense for way too long.
For all that continue to hate on Frank and Fredi, make two lists. One for those that are doing better with less and one for those doing worse with more. Make sure it has a column for this year, twoo years, and four years. Have a Keith Law column rating farm systems also. Get back to us with the results showing us all how unfortunate we are to be rooting for a team that has a great shot at the playoffs.
While we mostly agree the option for McCann will be picked up, nothing is 100% set in stone. Were talking about 12 million in payroll. Which is roughly 13% of our budget.
Say if it was Dan Uggla who happened to have the 12 million option for 2013? Would we pick it up cause he’s been so consistent over the years and refuse to believe he’d drop off this fast? I bet we would let him walk, and hey guess what Uggla is actually healthy too. McCann isn’t. He’s a 29 year old catcher with alot of wear n tear. He’s having shoulder issue that is very concerning to go along with all his other normal injuries and pains all catchers have. Then throw in that he continues to have vision issues on some level.
Live from moronville: Let’s not pick up 2013 option on 6-time all star Brian McCann; Freeman is struggling so let’s start piling on him; so Dan thinks he’s back – let’s hope he continues to struggle. On a previous episode: Heyward should be sent down to the minors or traded; Mike Minor cannot win in the majors; Venter is washed up.
Conspiracy Theory: Snooki and the Kardashian girls secretly blog under several names.
So, I saw a list the other day on MLB where Simmons is still listed as a Braves prospect. I assume that’s because of how little he’s played with the big team this season. Does anyone know if he would be eligible to compete for Rookie of the Year next season?
cab: would you be OK with spending $12 million for a battered catcher who is on the relative downslope of an otherwise nice AS career as he recovers from an injury that offers no guarantee whatsoever of a full recovery?
We need to face it. If I am Brian McCann, I would welcome a move to the AL, where I can extend my career and DH, provided I had the requisite hitting skills still intact after my shoulder surgery. He will need the cyst drawn, as well as have his frayed labrum shaved. He will not throw as well as he ever did, he will always have a losse shoulder, which will invite repeat injuries, and his body type has never spoken to inspired optimal fitness.
Sorry, cab, I have always respected you, and I know that you do not agree with many of the things I have to say. That said, given the Braves’ relative economic restraints, catcher – with all of its inherent risks – is not a position I wish to squander $12 million for nostalgia purposes.
He is done as an AS catcher. So yeah, JC Boscan at $200-$400 K is the better deal for slightly less performance. That said, you and I know that either the Braves sign another catcher to split time with Ross, or Bethancourt comes up, Simmons-style. Truth be told, that’s how it should be: find a cheap LH-hitting catcher and spit time between Ross and the other in a platoon.
Mark Bowman @mlbbowman
Sheets and Delgado will throw a simulated game like Teheran did Friday. Braves just trying to keep them all prepared to start if necessary
I love Brian McCann, but we can’t ignore what’s happened since the 2nd half of last season.
MiaBchBravesFan, I agree with you in a way, just not as hardcore as your view is. Gotta remember were only talking about a 1 year commitment, not a long term deal.
Unless you are a doctor, nobody has any idea if Mac’s shoulder will be a continuing problem after he gets it taken care of. I don’t believe he is done as an all-star catcher and I believe Boscan would give us a lot less than “slightly worse” performance. And Bethancourt is just not ready.
How many “cheap LH-hitting catchers” do you think are out there? Answer: Not many. You may be willing to give up on Mac, but I’m not.
(And this doesn’t even take into account that he has zero interest in being a DH)
It’s already pouring at Giants Stadium…no idea which way the rain is headed, but they have also postponed the US Open Women’s final until tomorrow based on the forecast tonight
Never mind, I answered my own question. Simmons is unlikely to be considered a rookie next season because he’ll likely exceed 130 at bats this season. He’s already at 115.
Just a heads up folks, the Braves have lost the last 5 games that I’ve actually been able to watch on TV. So be prepared for Medlen to come back to earth today.
VABravesFan: $12 million represents 13% of the Braves operating budget for one season. If I am Braves management, aware that I have to get rid of Uggla and probably won’t, and need to drastically improve hitting in The Post-Chipper Era…
Well, I am sorry, I just would not exercise McCann’s option. With Chipper gone, people on this blog see McCann as a significant vestige of the past, a symbol; I see him as a player whose position has finally taken its toll. I do not waste that money on a gambit and a prayer; been a LOT of that waste done already.

Hi Brava
Unless they hold him out so he will be eligable for ROY. ONLY KIDDING.
Like I said I agree with you somewhat. It truly depends on what Frank Wren’s plan is. I bet him and his team already have a few plans on how to approach the offseason and I’m sure there is a plan with McCann and without McCann. Cause anything can happen between now and next season.
What happens if McCann is batting and BAM swings and misses and he’s holding his shoulder in extreme pain. Something serious is wrong and he will need surgery, possibly missing time in 2013.
Or hell, McCann could start to hit and make a huge impact down the stretch and in the playoffs and appear to be healthy and so on.
But I know one thing for sure, there is no way in hell I would even think about a long term contract until after the 2013 season.
Jay Dubu: Good point… we just need to hope that he gets his shoulder problems fixed this offseason. If he does, he’ll be “back”. Next year, we watch to see if he can make it through without injuries, then try to re-sign him.
I wouldn’t be against “shutting Mac down” (giving him 2-3 starts a week). Ross may not be ideal, but at least it isn’t causing a risk to BMac and it’s giving us some offense. Ross is doing okay with the bat this year. McCann isn’t. Look at his swing. You can tell it hurts, he’s swing slower. Hence, he’s missing fastballs that he used to kill.
But I know one thing for sure, there is no way in hell I would even think about a long term contract until after the 2013 season.
Co-sign. And about picking up his option, the only way that doesn’t happen is if he hurts himself (shoulder, whatever) badly enough where he’ll miss much of the season. No reason to not pick it up otherwise.
I gotta watch the game any chance I get. Only reason I’m a Braves fan is cause of TBS, hell TBS is the reason I’m a baseball fan. Still remember the 1st time I came across it channel surfing in 1997 (10 years old) 1st AB I ever watched on TBS was Chipper and he ended up hitting a homerun. That’s where it all began. lol
I think we’ll win today. Our bats are due big time and we have our best pitcher on the mound. So even if Medlen gives up 2 or 3 runs in 6 innings I think we can win it, with Dan being “back” and all. lol
In the Great Cultural War between signing McCann or Francoeur, or both, during their arb years, the Braves were very fortunate to sign the right guy long-term. Brian has been well-paid for his significant services years before he was eligible for free agency. He has been declining; now he is significantly hurt, and not the player he used to be.
It is easy to spend other people’s money, and do it for less than logical purposes. This team is a hitting mess. Uggla compounds that misery for years to come. Real baseball is a game of bitter realities and few instances of defiance. $12 million for another Chipper-like au lang syne holds no interest for me when we have an excellent pitching window right NOW that must be supported by better hitting than the garbage we have seen for too many seasons.
The waste has been sinful. It has to stop. The Braves need to hire an Asst. GM who knows more about hitting, and how to evaluate it at all levels in the organization, than the person presently at the helm – who knows NOTHING whatsoever about hitting, or how to evaluate it.

“The media hype on this things has been unbelievable,” Johnson said. “I feel it’s as hard for him as it would be anybody to get mentally, totally committed in the ballgame. And he’s reached his innings limit. So we can get past this and talk about other things for a chance.”

I’m not sure what that quote has to do with ego- sounds like he’s feeling better at the plate than he has in a while and I think it has shown a bit in the last few games. Even when he is making outs, he is getting better contact then he has in a while. It may not be much, but it’s a sign of hope.

Then throw in that he continues to have vision issues on some level.

cab: would you be OK with spending $12 million for a battered catcher who is on the relative downslope of an otherwise nice AS career as he recovers from an injury that offers no guarantee whatsoever of a full recovery?

Well, I am sorry, I just would not exercise McCann’s option.
