Braves quotes after Friday’s win against Mets

FREDI POSTGAME

On the bullpen

“Durbin and Avilan got us out of that sixth-inning jam, then Jonny and O and Kimbrel did a nice job. They keep us in the ballgame, the starting pitching and then the bullpen has been terrific.”

On the hitting

“Saw some great stuff offensively today. I really thought we swung the bats good. Early on, I thought we hit some balls hard. Danny hit a rocket one-hopper to shortstop and we don’t get anything. Couple other guys had line drives, Heyward had a nice at-bat. We were able to score a runner from third, which was nice, on Rossy’s sac fly. And then Danny’s home run in the ninth made it a little easier.”

On Uggla getting a double and homer

“His last six or seven games, he’s been getting some hits. So good for him. We need him to swing the bat. And I think if we keep putting guys on base…. The problem is when you don’t put guys on base. That’s when you start worrying about your offense. When you get people on base, something good’s going to happen sooner or later.”

On Maholm getting in tight spots

“He wiggled out of a lot of jams. And then that sixth inning, we thought he was going to wiggle out again. Then that double play we don’t turn, we make an error on that double play. Then Durbs and Louis came up with some big outs there.”

On Kimbrel pitching three days in a row

“Him and O’Flaherty both three days in a row. I think O’Flaherty was only a third of an inning yesterday, but still, three days in a row of getting up and getting in the game. So we’ll check with them tomorrow, see how they feel. Probably one of them or both of them may take a day off. But you’ve got other guys down there that you feel comfortable giving the ball to in the ninth inning.”

On what he was thinking when score was 1-0 after six

“I’m wondering what the record is for winning one-run games. I don’t think my stomach could take another one-run game.”

On pitching three straight shutouts

“Good things happen, you feed off it. Even offensively. It’s contagious when you hit. And I think when you pitch it’s contagious, also. And right now we’re pitching it pretty good and I think Roger’s doing a helluva job with some of these young pitchers also.”

**DAN UGGLA

“We scraped a couple across and got another shutout, another win.”

On his big night, a double and homer

“I’m back. Just because I hit the ball hard, if I have a bad night and go 0-for-4, it’s not about feeling for it anymore, it’s not about searching for it. It’s here. This is me. And like I said, I’m going to battle and compete the way I know how to.”

On his recent performance

“The last month or whatever, I haven’t been on fire or anything, but I knew it was right around the corner. And you know what? I just said screw it. There’s no more searching. This ain’t searching time. This is September. This is go out and lay it on the field, and put together and compete to the best of your ability. And that’s what I’m going to do.”

On team’s recent pitching

“It’s unbelievable. These guys are battling like I’ve never seen. They’ve had runners in scoring position. We’ve only given them one run, so they’ve had no cushion. They’ve really stayed calm and kept their cool and made their pitches, and did what they needed to do to get out of it. It’s really been amazing to watch, because you don’t see too many ballgames won on unearned runs, a 1-nothing game, and then tonight 1-nothing till the seventh. It’s been fun to watch them.”

**PAUL MAHOLM

On getting out of trouble early

“It wasn’t the cleanest game. The last time I pitched [against the Mets], they were aggressive early and they were getting a lot of ground balls. Tonight I was a little erratic. They kind of waited me out. I made pitches when I had to, and the defense made some plays. Obviously with J-Hey going deep to get us the one run, and then Uggs coming through with the double and the home run, it allowed the bullpen to kind of relax and do their thing. I think whenever you hand the bullpen a lead you’re feeling pretty confident.”

On his recent performance, how he’s feeling

“I’m good. When I first got over here I was on a good run and I was pitching well. You’re going to have struggles. It had been two months since I had a bad start, and my last one was not good at all. I’m confident I can go out there and compete and win games. Some nights it’s going to be a battle and you’re going to have to throw some stressful pitches and expect to get out of it. That was tonight.

“You just continue to work, continue to do your thing. I’m not going to change my routine or change anything. I’ve been through the gauntlet of a 30-start season for … this is my seventh year. So it’s part of it. Luckily, these guys are picking me up.”

What about the bullpen

“I think you look at any guys down there, you can put them in any spot and they’re going to come up big for you. Obviously the inning that I came out, huge strikeout for Durbs and then a groundout by Avi. You hope you can get seven innings and hand it over to the back end, but you’re also confident in getting into the sixth and them picking you up and taking it from there.”

No comments from Chipper? What’d he think of the mixed reaction he got from the fans? I was sure hoping he’d get a big hit or two, but maybe tomorrow or Sunday will be better for him.

Go Braves! Make it four shutouts in a row!

Clint, I don’t imagine Chipper felt much like talking after this one. If this phenomenal pitching continues, no way do we miss post season. I do think we’ll eventually start scoring more than 1.5 runs per game.

Mets fans are classless and probably the only fan base to boo a guy in his final series there. Other news it’s good to see Uggla hit the ball hard recently and have a great game
tonight let’s just hope it’s not just a flash in the pan like his other supposed break outs

@James. Chipper plays for the visiting team. Booing is respect and they come primarily to watch the home team win.

And have you ever heard of New York. They don’t have the time to show support for another team because they are always #1. So much that they got two teams to prove it!

This has been a VERY productive night of baseball for the Braves’ post-season chances! The Giants, Dodgers, Pirates, Cardinals, and Nationals all lost! The Braves now have a four game lead for the first Wild Card spot, are 6.5 games behind the Nats, and have a 5 game lead over the Pirates for the second Wild Card spot.

Amazing….the team is winning some gutsy games but still complaints about fredi, uggly, not enough runs scored in this & the last blog…..some bloggers live in a fantasy world where both pitching& hitting are operating at 100% ….of course perfection must exist in their own lives!!

WOW… Nice game for Bravos! I hope this will be the break-out day, and everybody catches FIRE.

JHey is the BOMB! He seems to always get something started, and what about Ross? Uggla may have taken a long time, but I will hold him to “I’m back”!!

Lets Roll today……

“They don’t boo nobodies” — Reggie Jackson.
I believe that booing Chipper would have to be one of the biggest ‘enjoyments’(is that a real word?, perhaps pleasures, would be a better choice), in attending a Mets game vs. the Braves, for most of the poor ole Mets fans.
They sure don’t have much to cheer about. haha.
go braves!

Anyone else using Google Chrome not able to view the Twitter feeds on the new AJC page? Has anyone found a way to fix this?

Hey @DOB, any idea if the new site still has the AJC Sports Twitter section?

As soon as the last game is over this year this stops becoming Chipper’s team and becomes Hayward’s team. Kid is 23 and has 25 hr and 19 sbs. Can run the bases as well as anyone out there. I hope Heyward is a Brave for life. No quotes from him but he had a two hit game and game up huge for the Braves once again.

“I’m back, whether I go 0-4 or 4-4.”—2B Dan Uggla.
I am not too impressed with his attitude. He sounds like a baby that whined enough for the whimp Dredi to play him again.
He is too inconsistent. He needed to be benched longer.
Perhaps the steroids have inflated his ego, as well.

Seems Simmons getting his grove back down on the farm. Not dissing Janish, but would be nice to see a glove and bat out there again. Oh Dan, this time next week if you are hitting like last few games, I will agree you are back. Have spurted in past and gone bye bye again. With your statements recently, I am beginning to understand a part of the problem, EGO. Minor,Hudson and Maholm last starts were excellent and not forgetting our new Ace (Medlen) way to go guys.

I hope Uggla is right but he said that before and than slumped. Like I said before we have to have his right hand power bat in the lineup and working or we are in trouble. I must say I was dissapointed in his crying to the press after Freddi sat him down for a couple of games. Lets hope that is behind us and he is right this time.
Felt sorry for Mahlom after Chipper’s error cost and inning double play and than Freddi takes Mahlom out of the game, but that is baseball and that is the way it goes sometimes.

One of the best things about J-Hey’s home run was that it came against a lefty, and a pretty good one in Niese.

We won’t hear him say it but I think Fredi should be given credit for deciding that the only way they were gonna get Uggla ‘off’ was to pi$$ him off enough that he was, finally, ‘gonna show those SOBs’, and low and behold it worked…at least it’s a start.

Not much credit for JHey’s game deciding HR. The headline says Uggla homered. Yes, he did, but JHey had the one which gave them the lead that they never gave up. Shouldn’t the headline have read, “Braves win, Heyward HR? Gosh, there is too much “Danny hit a hard one hopper to the SS. Fredi loves Uggla. That is a fact.”

Uggla did enough last night to secure him a start in every game the rest of the year, I’m afraid. Fredi, now has an excuse, “what, it was what 14 games ago he had two hits, one of them a homer, blah, blah”.

Did anyone hear Uggla say that he would never bring into the clubhouse or dugout any negativity about being benched. He and Obama, the truth ain’t there.

I still want to see the Braves at the top of the Division–I haven’t given up on that. Strasburg is now shut down for the rest of the season. The Braves rotation is pitching at their best at the exact right time of the season. The bullpen is excellent and even stronger/deeper with Moylan back. Andrelton Simmons is returning! The rest of the Nats rotation is not pitching as well as our team. If the Braves offense would heat up, the rest of Sept. could get real interesting.

The Nats seem to be right about the number of innings that Strasburg could go before he started to hit the wall. Zimmerman and Detweiler must also be reaching unfamiliar territory in innings pitched. The Nats will miss the pre-September Strasburg in their playoff run, but for the one series left against the Braves, I would rather see us facing Strasburg than John Lannan.

Whether Uggla is back or not, he is no longer currently the least productive Brave. That title belongs to Brian McCann with Freeman, Janish, and even Bourn in the mix. Zito, the two San Diego lefties, and Henry seem to have put the Braves bats to sleep. Freeman usually follows a slump with a big hot streak. He needs to get that starte right now.

suggest, now that Uggla is so valuable, Fredi employ the “Strasberg Strategy” & bench him rest of season. (or career better yet). 2 extra base hits …what have you done last 3months?
