You have to be correct….remember Hampton when he was here? Colorado was paying a huge amount of his salary and he came to us thru the Marlins I think…

That’s the only way some trades happen is if the “seller” pays huge amount of the contracts…….like Derek Lowe of course..

there is a lot of stuff going around about how everybody who thought Meds was more valuable in the pen hated him and claimed he would be a failure as a starter. That is way off the mark

I hated Meds because I thought that he was more valuable in the ‘pen to start the season? Wow… so wrong.

Another game tonight, not feeling good with Tommy going, but we’ll see what happens. He needs to go 6 innings, allowing just 1 run and 3 hits. He’s looked horrible since May. Need all the good starts/performances we can get out of him to help his supposed “tradeability”…

If anyone was watching Fox SportsSouth at 1:04pm EDT yesterday (Labor Day), that was my 8 year old daughter doing the chop with a tomahawk on the camera. She was sitting by the Ty Cobb statue and was the “cut in” coming back from a commercial break. Chip said something like, “now she’s ready to welcome the Colorado Rockies to Turner Field”. Okay, I’m being a proud papa, but that was really cool! She was saying “Go Chipper, Go Braves!” Now, that’s why we chop!

Kris Medlen threw 85 of his 111 pitches for strikes yesterday. That strike percentage of 76.5% is the highest by a Braves starter (at least 5 IP) since August 10, 2005 (John Smoltz).

Smoltz was also the last Braves pitcher besides Medlen to throw at least 85 strikes in a game, on July 8th, 2006.

It’s usually a pretty good indicator of success. Since 1991, the Braves are 29-4 in games where they have a pitcher throw 85 or more strikes.

Bourn is a speedster who is gonna be 30 at the start of his deal. He’s already past his prime, and won’t even be close to being worth 15+mil when he’s 34. Also, he’s not a slugger, so to pay him Uggla money + is ridiculous. Greinke is a #2, possibly #1 pitcher who is in the prime for his position. A 4-5 year deal won’t hurt with him.

Constanza was a fun story for a while last year. That was while he was hitting. Hi’s so fast, and his base running and defense are fun to watch. Good stuff.
Problem is, you can’t steal First Base. You can’t make things happen on the basepath, if you aren’t on base. What’s his OBP? (I’m not motivated to look it up) There’s the rub. He will never be a MLB regular, until he hits consistantly.

I’ve just about come around to the fact that Mac’s shoulder is behind a lot of his struggles.

The guy has just been awful. It’s essentially pointless for him to even play at this point unless this latest shot somehow helps him.

I certainly don’t want to see him and Uggly up there posting more and more automatic outs ahead of the autos to come from Janish and the pitcher’s spot. Even with Simmons coming back, how much offensive help can we expect from him? Maybe some, but his timing will be for crap I would think.

It’s clear that Mac and Uggly aren’t getting ti done. Since that’s a given, trying something else, anything else, makes more sense than sitting tight and playing those two each day.

Uggla being a black hole for months now, what difference does it make if he’s sitting?

Efrim

Heyward is 4 for his last 29, and I don’t think he’s seen a stretch like this since May, I believe. 1 walk in his last 52 plate appearances. I was thinking he had a shot at 70 walks for the season – but that ain’t happening.

Still be happy with an .830 OPS, but it would be nice to see that OBP at .350 or more to end the year.

Jeff R

September 4th, 2012

Also, he’s [Bourn's] not a slugger, so to pay him Uggla money + is ridiculous.

I think the Braves will drop out of the Bourn sweepstakes fairly early. But Bourn will command Uggla-like bucks.

As to Bourn not being a slugger, so why pay him slugger dollars… I think there’s growing emphasis on the value of contact hitters, getting on base, and base running. Bourn offers that at lead-off (not to mention a good glove in center), so he seems to be well-positioned for a big payoff.

MFin04

I think giving Uggla a few days off is probably the right move. Probably wouldn’t bench him though. He has enough power to scare people and has got on base at a great rate all year long.

One of the biggest things that I believe made it take this long to bench Dan Uggla is the sheer size of his contract. Right now if he isn’t the most expensive bench player in MLB, he’s certainly close. And that cost per innings played makes this a very tough pill to swallow for the Braves.

Maybe the season will end a little more in line with Heyward having more walks, but I don’t think Freeman will surpass him in K’s this year. Heyward is just piling them up at an amazing rate.

Maybe if you were one of the 700 people in a population of four billion that could do your job, you’d get the chance.

Speaking of which… I always love it when “fans” rag on major league stars for making fabulous paydays and then say it’s unfair because firemen, police officers, and teachers are paid so little by comparison.

First of all, we’re talking about a population (MLB players) that doesn’t even constitute a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the workforce. They are significant anomalies. It’s like getting P.O.ed at lottery winners!

“If somebody struggles, late in the season I’m putting my guys out there. Putting them out there every day and I’m seeing what happens. We’re at this level, we make adjustments. We’ve been there before, we’ve done it. And you never know what’s going to happen.” -Dan Uggla

Really, Dan? This is the right move, you have been struggling and it ain’t getting any better.

“that was before he got exposed.”

And Dan Uggla and Brian McCann aren’t exposed? I mean all you gotta do it put 4 guys on the right side of the infield for McCann and move the RF in 20 steps and you got him covered. Dan Uggla you just throw the ball down the middle and let his out-making magic get exposed.

Differences of opinion…That’s what makes the blog go round…although I would prefer a little less vitriol and no personal attacks.

DFA Uggla/Don’t bench Uggla
Fredi just sits ther and does nothing/Fredi is tinkering with the lineup too much
Non-tender MaCann (he’s too fat)/extend McCann (I personally think the shoulder is the problem)
Chipper is hurting the team (really?)/Chipper is our hero
Medliin is our ACE/Medlin is too valuable in the BP (both true)
Wren should be fired/Wren has done an exceptional job

On and on. Healthy debate is always a good thing…makes one think… So is mutual respect. Just saying….

Chipper needs four more walks to get to 1500.

and only 2 triples to get to 40. I’m thinking he doesn’t make it on the triples.

Chipper will be the 18th major league player with 1500 walks.

i hate it when guys lose their jobs. i feel bad for dan and understand why he is upset. i also feel bad that he and fredi are now at odds. i think fredi made the right decision, though. uggla will probably still play more than he will sit, dont you think?

McCann’s hurt, and I don’t know what’s wrong with Uggla…However, Constanza is not the answer. Never has been, likely never will be. Reed would be okay in LF, he’s proven.

Real bummed Janish jacked up Medlen’s scoreless streak… still has a no-earned run streak going and the 18 straight games of team wins…

I know there seems to be two camps here regarding Uggla, Dan says it was not explained to him why he was benched. I do believe this is kind of ludicrous that Fredi and Dan had a meeting and Dan left not understanding why? Don’t believe it or Fredi needs to take a sensitivity class. :-)

I don’t feel badly for Dan.

I want to win. He’s the bow of the Titanic…
