The clock struck September on Saturday and the Braves are left trying to prove it’s not panic time.
They opened the final month of the regular season the same way they ended it last year, with a demoralizing loss to the Phillies.
Cliff Lee pitched seven shutout innings in a 5-1 win, handing the Braves their third straight loss and 10th in the past 14 games overall. The Phillies assured themselves of their first series win over the Braves since early May, while the Braves are assured of nothing better than a split in their past five series.
“I’m worried about our offense,” said manager Fredi Gonzalez, when asked about concerns of repeating a September collapse. “I’m not worried about the other parts of the game. I feel like we’re healthy where we weren’t last year. I feel we’re pitching well… But I worry about our offense. It seems like when it goes bad, it goes bad.”
Martin Prado homered for the second straight day and ninth time this season, but his eighth inning solo shot was all that stood between the Braves and a 12th shutout this season.
The Braves have scored two or fewer runs eight times in their past 13 games, leaving Gonzalez in no mood for “cap-tipping.”
“It’s so easy to say, ‘It’s (Roy) Halladay and Cliff Lee and whoever is throwing tomorrow and the bullpen, this and that,” Gonzalez said. “But we’re just not swinging the bats at all…. Enough of that. We need to take care of our end of the bargain and get better at-bats, get some hits with runners in scoring position, that type of stuff.”
The Braves have gone 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position in the first two games of this series and stranded 17 runners. Their best scoring chances Saturday kept finding struggling Brian McCann, and he popped up twice to end the fourth and sixth innings while stranding five runners.
Tim Hudson wasn’t sharp enough to keep pace with Lee, even though he didn’t exactly get pounded while giving up five runs in five innings. Hudson allowed nine hits, but only two were hit especially hard – Jimmy Rollins’ solo home run in the third inning and Chase Utley’s RBI double in the fifth.
Hudson’s afternoon dissolved after he loaded the bases with nobody out in the sixth inning and walked the pitcher Lee on a borderline 3-2 pitch.
“It’s probably the worst stuff I’ve had all year,” said Hudson, who took his first loss since July 1 against the Nationals. “It was a battle.”
Reliever Luis Avilan did quality damage control, allowing only one more run to score when Juan Pierre beat out a potential double play ball. But the Braves were already well on their way to another loss.
The Braves remained within 6 ½ games of the Nationals in the NL East but watched the Cardinals pulled within two games of their wild card lead, and both the Pirates and Dodgers were inside of four games of the Braves entering Saturday night.
Hudson said the players aren’t concerned with thoughts of another September collapse, but fielding those sorts of questions isn’t how they wanted to start the month either.
“Obviously we’re concerned about winning ballgames and not losing, but we go out there and bust our butts every game,” Hudson said. “That’s all we can do.”

The only way the Braves catch then Nats is next April when we all start 0-0. The Nats can go ahead and rest Strausberg because Fredi and the Bravos ae resting now!!!
There was a person on here the other day saying don’t worry about Fredi, he has lead the Braves to the fifth( 5th) best record in the MLB, well if 5th is good enough for you, great. How does that 5th best record (and falling fast) look to you now??????

Thats the strategy, folks! The Mets choked back to back years. And the rivalry is so heated, that the Braves just will not let their fierce rival out choke them!
And for that, you have to say…ATTA BOY, FREDI! for keeping the rivalry fresh and exciting!

OK Chipper, you got a couple of hits today. You can REALLY tell these bums tonight how bad they are.
These guys (including the management) keep saying no way are they going to collapse like they did last year. Let me tell you, losing 10 of 14 is a pretty good start to doing just that.
Remember a couple of months ago when two of the announcers were saying McCann would probably command 20M on his next contract. He will be lucky if they don’t release him.

The Braves collapse of 2012 is well under way. Fredi G. (The dumbest manager in the history of MLB) keeps McCan’t in the game against a lefty. McCan hasn’t hit for a year. (Look at his stats, from August 2011 to August 2012). They are nothing short of terrible. McCan’t is pretty much as worthless as Dan Uggla. McCan’t is playing just like last August, when he led nTHAT collapse. McCan’t is done, toast, a zero.Hudson contiues to prove that he can’t win big games. He’s a #3 or #4 starter at best. Walk the pitcher, with the baes loaded. That’s Big Game Tim Hudson. Unreal. There is no offense with this group, because they are a collection of CHOKERS. They were that, in 2011. They are that, in 2012. These guys will always find a way to lose, cause that’s their makeup. They are headcases, spit-it-out, chokin’ losers.
The good news is that Fredi will get canned after leading the 2012 collapse. Do a major blow-up of this roster. Start over. And please fire Franki Wren’s sorry behind.
Fredi and Franki…if there is a decision to be made, they will make the wrong one.

They are back and playing like the Phillies should. Best move was to shake up the club by trading Pence and Victorino and Blanton. Lee, Hamels, Halladay, and Kendrick are pitching very well over the last month. The bullpen has settled down. Utley and Howard are finally getting into shape. A very dangerous team right now. They will cause problems for everyone remaining on their schedule. Be happy you only have 4 more with them. nats still have 6 with the Phils.

If the Braves blow it again this September it is seriously time to sit down with Wren and Fredi and cut the strings. Let them walk. If they can’t manage the teams money or roster efficiently then we’ll never win anything. We can’t keep dumpster diving to fill a roster when there are plenty of guys in the minors putting up good numbers. Lyle Overbay? Are you serious Frank Wren? I almost thought it was a cruel April Fool’s joke that was way late. When I heard that the Braves signed him I did a super-facepalm because only desperate teams would even consider signing his washed up ***.

We need the offense to wake up! Heyward, Freeman, and Prado can’t win us every single game. They win us a lot but not every night. Earth to Dan Uggla- Please come back and suddenly remember how to hit. Brian McCann- Please start playing how you’ve played your entire career and stop trying to be an offensive liability every day. These are good guys who have proven over the years that they can play, how did they both stop producing at the same time? Its mind boggling.
Its not just our offense, our starting pitchers need to throw some quality games from here on out too. It worries me that the front office keeps beefing up the bullpen, thinking that its more important than having good starters. Our bullpen shouldn’t have to come into every game expected to stop the bleeding and limit the damage that our starters have done while the offense tries to wake up and maybe get going enough to actually win the games. This is looking bad, and the most worrying sign to me is that they signed Lyle Overbay. That is a true desperation move. We may be in trouble.

At this point I’d seriously consider trying some of our higher end pitching prospects than letting Hanson make a mockery of our team every time he starts. Maybe let Teheran start in his place once, let Sean Gilmartin have a try if Teheran blows it after that, and maybe see if Delgado has things worked out. We have internal options that Wren doesn’t seem to remember about. We don’t have to let pitchers that aren’t throwing well start every game.
Same if Mike Minor starts to decline, let a younger guy spot start for him. We need to win games however we can at this point and the guys they are putting on the field day after day have proven they need help. Getting behind early on in all the recent games is bad for the team. Chipper always complains about it but he’s right. You can’t be expected to claw your way back into every game after getting behind early. Our offense needs to do a lot of work on their end to make sure we score first too though.

Amber Girl- I have confidence in SOME of our team. Not especially Wren or Fredi at this point or 1/3rd of the guys they are having start for us. How can we beat elite teams in the playoffs like the Yankees if we can’t beat the struggling teams like Padres and Phillies? We’d all like to see our team play better and send Chipper off with a World Series title but the way things are happening now I seriously can’t see it unless things turn around drastically.
We might get a shot at the 1 game playoff (if we stop losing) and after that I think we might be done unless the guys wake up, hit better, and pitch better. I can’t see us winning a playoff series right now how things are and that bothers me. I hope they win it all but I can’t see it happening like this.

McCann, Uggla, and Janish offer nothing offensively. Zero. That is killing any chances for rallies. Freeman, Chipper, and Prado have some prospects of success. Heyward is inconsistent but offers some upside. Heyward, Bourn and Uggla are all in the top 10 in league K’s (Uggla is #2). Uggla and McCann must be benched to give them any hope. Simmons will return and put Janish back on the bench. But Fredi’s inability to see reality is the real problem. Running out Uggla and McCann to fail and fail is ineptitude. If this team folds again, is Fredi gone?

Anybody besides me notice the body language and the facial “attitudes” of the Braves’ players. That includes Fredi J Gonzalez. Honestly not much spirit or exuberance there at all. I blame a lot of that on the managerial leadership. They seem to be in slow motion most of the time. About the only two that halfway show any spirit or energy is Martin Prado and Jason Heyward. Maybe the team should be renamed ”THE ATLANTA ZOMBIES”.

I wonder how much money Bourn has cost himself with his post-All Star game performance? It is sad that this guy, with his speed, has 150 strike-outs so far. If he could have pit balls in play 50-75 of those times, he’s have a bunch of infield hits that would have been a lot of help to the team. He seems to be a strike-out machine against LH pitchers, and the whole team is basically awful against lefties, which, of course, the whole NL knows. With McCann, it is one of three things (1) His shoulder is worse than the team is saying, (2) His vision us sub-par–has not been the same since he was dumb enough to get Lasik surgery, or (3) He is just worn down by catching 140-plus games for the past number of seasons and will never return to his former self. The Braves need to be VERY careful in the contract they might offer to Bourn and what they end up offering to McCann. No more Uggla-type contracrs!

We get to witness a paradox when the irresistible force (Braves don’t lose with Medlen) and the immovable object (Braves don’t win on Mondays) collide.
I’m kinda disgusted right now, but to me a successful baseball season ends in late October, not late August. I suppose I’m expected to say go Braves at this time. Go Braves.
