Hold onto your seats, September is here

(Carroll Rogers is filling in for David O’Brien today.)

Well, here we are. September 1. Thirty games between the Braves and a possible return to the postseason for the first time since 2010. The Braves venture into what was very treacherous territory last year – need I remind you of last year’s E.C. as my esteemed colleague Mark Bradley calls it. Frankly the Braves might as well just get right back into action after last night’s oddly familiar kind of loss to the Phillies (extra innings, blown save by Craig Kimbrel, reminiscent of the last game of the season last year.)

So the 4 p.m. FOX start is probably a good thing today as the Braves didn’t have much time to sit around and think about anything. I do think it was telling when both Chipper Jones and Michael Bourn talked about how they didn’t lose any ground in the wild card last night. At 6 ½ games behind the Nationals, even though Stephen Strasburg has only two or three starts left, and the Braves have three games left with the Nats, I think the wild card is the more realistic goal now.

And looking at it that way, the Braves lead is much less than last year. They were up 8 ½ games in the wild card on Sept. 5 last year. Heading into today’s game, they had a three-game lead on the Cardinals for the first wild card spot, and they’ve got at 3 ½ game lead on the Pirates, 4 ½ game lead on the Dodgers. Of course, two teams make it this year to a one-game playoff, so it’s not the same that way either.

“This is a totally different year,” Bourn said last night. “First of all, we had a way bigger lead last year than we do this year….You have to block that out of your head. You have to take that and throw it in the bag. You have to block it out. Don’t worry about that. That was last year. We’ve got to be able to turn it around this year and show them that we’re a different team.”

The Braves finished August 15-14 and frankly could use a chance to turn the page. As realcj10 said last night “Start the Sept mojo magic tmrw.” That didn’t exactly sound like a team leader who’s apprehensive about the month and what it entails. They’ll need to quickly with both Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels to come in this weekend series.

September call-ups

I’m going to make this blog really snappy because I’m dealing with some quick deadlines with college football going on today. So let me get right to matters. As expected, the Braves called up Lyle Overbay, Peter Moylan, Jose Constanza and catcher J.C. Boscan in the first wave of September call-ups. The Braves will add a couple more pitchers on Tuesday after Gwinnett’s season is over. My guess would be Cory Gearrin and Anthony Varvaro.

Moylan was genuinely excited about his return, said it almost brought him to tears the other day when he found out. He didn’t see it coming after he’d struggled with some inconsistency coming off shoulder surgery. It’s proved a lot more challenging than the Tommy John recovery. Be on the lookout for a note about that, as well as Overbay.

Fredi Gonzalez is sitting the left-handed hitting Bourn today and putting Reed Johnson in center field vs. Lee. The numbers make it look like a pretty clear decision: Bourn is 0-for-15 in his career against Lee, while Johnson is 5-for-11 (.455) against him with two doubles, one homer and two walks.

Braves lineup:

1. Martin Prado LF

2. Reed Johnson CF

3. Jason Heyward RF

4. Chipper Jones 3B

5. Freddie Freeman 1B

6. Brian McCann C

7. Dan Uggla 2B

8. Paul Janish SS

9. Tim Hudson P

Brian McCann did break out the glasses last night and plans to again today. He said he had some problems with the wind in San Francisco and the dry air in San Diego. He put the glasses on back home and he felt better with them, so he’s going to take it day-by-day and use them if he feels the need.

More on the collision

For those of you who thought Chipper Jones should have just slid into home plate last night instead of drawing some serious contact with catcher Erik Kratz, I asked Chipper about that this morning and he didn’t see any of the plate.

“Where am I going to slide?” he said. “He’s going to come down right on top of me and bury me. I didn’t see any plate. I’ve played this game for a long time and I’ve had many opportunities. If he gives me a crease, I’ll take it. But he’s 6-4 he’s 260. He’s a big man and I couldn’t see any of home plate.”

Chipper said it was probably the biggest collision of his career.

“I hit (Mike) Piazza a couple times, nothing like that,” Jones said. “Piazza was more one of those guys who would sit on home plate. He learned under (Mike) Scioscia. He’s pretty hard to move when he’s sitting on home plate. When the throw is high and up the line it gives you an opportunity to get up under there.”

Fredi was just glad it wasn’t somebody shorter like Carlos Ruiz who might have upended Jones at the plate. As it was, Chipper felt fine and ready to play Saturday afternoon.

Speaking of feeling good, shortstop Andrelton Simmons took bp on the field today as he continues to gear up to start a minor league rehabilitation assignment on Tuesday with an eye toward a mid-September return. He’s a pretty happy guy these days as the last two months have been tough on him, out with a broken hand.

“It was a big relief,” Simmons said of getting cleared for all baseball activities Friday by hand specialist Dr. Gary Lourie. “I’ve been getting stalled so much. I’m feeling ready to do stuff and they were trying to be careful. I understand why they were trying to be careful but me being me I’m ready to go. I was waiting for the ok to start doing stuff, so getting that ok yesterday was big for me.”

Time to post and get on with things.

I do dislike it when the Braves are on FOX. The game is rarely televised in my area and the game is blacked out on MLB.TV, thus preventing me from watching a team that I watch play everyday. At least I have MLB Audio.

Being able to watch just about all of the Nationals games and knowing alot of fans and so on.. I really think Michael Bourn is a Nat next season. They lack a real leadoff man and a real CFer, there willing to spend money, plus there GM Mike Rizzo has always been a huge fan of Bourn. He’s attempted to trade for Bourn in the past. Also has a ton of interest in the now injured Denard Span. I believe they will be determined to land him. Even if it means they will have to figure out how to handle LaRoche and Morse going forward.

Cliff Lee vs. Tim Hudson…. Cliff has had a “rough” year, going 3-7 with a 3.67 ERA… he’s turned it up lately, with a 2.91 ERA in his last 6 starts. Tim Hudson is 13-4 with a 3.57 ERA, and an ERA of 3.19 in his last 6 starts.

The Phillies have done well against Timmy this year, with a .250/.308/.438/.745 line against him. In 52 PAs, they have gathered 12 Hits (3 doubles, 2HR) and 6 RBI along with 2 BB vs. 9 Ks. The lifetime batting line for the Phillies players against Tim Hudson is .245/.321/.432/.753

The Braves have yet to face Lee all year. Against him lifetime, the Braves batters have a .243/.284/.407/.691 line. The only batters who are yet to face him are Pastornicky, Boscan, and Francisco.

Prado 4-19 (2 doubles) and 1 RBI… 7 Ks .211/.211/.316/.526

Johnson 5-11 (1 HR, 2 doubles) with 1 RBI… 2 BB, 2 K .455/.538/.909/1.448

Heyward 1-4 ( triple) with 1 BB, 1 K .250/.400/.750/1.150

Jones 7-18 (4 doubles, 1 HR) with 5 RBIs, 3 K .389/.389/.778/1.167

Freeman 2-13, 5 Ks .154/.214/.154/.368

McCann 6-18 (2 doubles) with 1 RBI, 1 BB, 5 Ks .333/.368/.444/.813

Uggla 4-16 (2 doubles, 1 HR) with 2 RBI, 1 BB, 6 Ks .250/.294/.563/.857

Janish 3-8 with 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K .375/.444/.375/.819

Hudson 0-2 with 2 Ks

Seems to me we pay a boatload of money to direct tv for the MLB package and yet get blacked out on FOX and the MLB channels. I talked to Direct TV about this and they said it is the decision of the home team on whether to black out or not. My position is we pay direct tv for these games so why are they not putting pressure on major league baseball to not allow teams to black out games anywhere when teams play on FOX. Direct tv, major league baseball and home teams who black out the mlb channels are ripping off fans. Shame on fricking all of them.

Typical Hudson Ist inning. Gives up 3 hits, but only one run this time. IF, the braves make the playoffs, and that is a mighty big IF, and they start Hudson and his sinker that doesn’t sink until the 3 or 4th inning, then the braves deserve to lose. There is no way Hudson or anyone else starts ahead of Medlen in game one if the braves make playoffs. You have to put your best pitcher on the mound in a do or die one game playoff. Unfortunately for braves fans, Fredi the brilliant one will start Hudson.

As Green Days says, “Wake me up when september ends!”. The team can say that this year is different, but I am afraid we will soon see that it is no different. The mental leadership provided by Fredi Gonzales has always been poor and this team falls apart under pressure. They seem to do well as the underdog(i.e. down 5-0 and feeling like the game is lost); but when it comes time to perform in key games and key situations they crumble. And what has been learned today?

1. Obviously Tim Hudson is NOT an ace, and can’t win meaningful games.
2. The Altanata offense is a joke.
3. Dan Uggla is as he’s been for 3 + months…Worthless in any measure.
4. The 2012 September Braves are every bit the chokers, as the September 2011 Braves proved to be.
5. If there is a headcase, choke job, spit-it-out team in MLB, it is the Atlanta Braves.
6. Winners find a way to win. The Braves, under Fredi G. find a way to spit it out in September. They are who they are, and they show it.

The Braves need to bench McCann for the rest of the season. I am sick of this fat ass’ selfishness and demanding to play through injuries that are clearly affecting his ability to play.

Another quality start by Hudson the braves STOPPER!!! LOL!! This guy disappears in every big game, and especially when the team needs a strong outing. Yet all braves fans think he is a big time #1 starter. Only thing that is big time about Hudson is the money the braves are paying him. He and McCant should be 2 veterans that the braves can count on in big games.

If the Braves collapse again this year, next year might be a great year to rebuild. We have a lot of salary coming off the books and hopefully more with McCann and Uggla out the door. I think we should trade Hudson and Maholm and go with a rotation of Medlen, Hanson (gotta give him a chance to get back on track), Minor, Delgado and Teheran. Let’s give them a year to mature with little to no pressure to win. Keep Heyward, Freeman, Simmons and Prado as our offensive core then try to find some additional pieces to round out the team. Maybe try to pry Upton from Arizona or take a shot on some other guys.

I wonder if Liberty would roll-over the savings from one year to the next? I hate to see this team have a down year, but I don’t see us being all that competitive next year anyway. I don’t see why we can’t rebuild for one season with an eye towards 2014.

As a Braves fan going back many years, I think it might actually be better for the club if it did NOT get a wild card, Obviously, Atlanta is a better-than-.500 reasonably good team but NOT among the top tier and would have little or no chance in the playoffs. Fredi is a nice guy who would be successful as a coach, but, truthfully, he needs to be replaced. If the Braves get a wild card, he will be around next season. The team needs to be restructured, bring in some new faces. This bunch collapsed BIG TIME last year and seems quite ready to do it AGAIN with the same manager and most of the same players. Use the core of good players, get a new manager, and get rid of some dead wood.

He is a head case and he has killed this team. Winners make winners! Losers suck everyone else down to his pathetic level. He loses more games than he helps us win! The day Wren said he thought The Braves have what it takes to be a World Series team, I thought…oh no. They’ve been sliding since then. I wonder f Gonzalez has the make up to keep a team stable when it comes down to brass tacks ? I sure don’t feel ESPN’s math showing a 80+ percentage probability of the team making the playoffs is at all accurate when the human element is factored in. I wouldn’t give them better than a 50/50 chance.

Stop your belly aching. If Howard and Utley were healthy all year and Halladay didn’t miss 2 months and the new best catcher (pudgey wudgey isn’t top 5) Ruiz played all year these games would be meaningless as the Phillies have owned the Braves with the exception of beating their second string this year and the Braves would be what’re the Phillies are and well you guys are real juggernauts in September. If the Phil’s fall out of contention ( ‘07 7 out with 17 to play but nobody between them and Muts. Phillies basically can’t stand a loss. What’s disconcerting without getting into details is a month ago he was auditioning guys. One game in particular up 4-1against Brewers and instead of bringing in Papplebon for 4 out save he leaves one of the new phucks in and he loads bases and Hart hits grand slam to beat them 5-4. Be happy you’re in the hunt. Pirates will wilt, Dodgers have no pitching, and well you’re still in the drivers seat but for those who like me get too involved ( it was actually enjoyable when it didn’t matter if the Phil’s won) Now they put me back in the pizza oven. If they drop 2 in a row from here on in they’re done. If you blow it this year again there’ll be an job opening in the Atlanta area.
If you blow it you all may think back to the shot heard round the world by our 3rd string catcher. You still do have the best closer from April – August 30th.

Phooey.

Blame is on the culture created here by the manager. And allowed to occur by the GM. They’re starting to get flashbacks and Gonzalez has no chance of pulling these guys out of it.

Maybe they’ll hang on. Who knows. But it will be because of the fading veteran leadership — not the overmatched field commander. Nice guy — brutal strategist and motivator. Awful.

It’s pretty obvious that Freddi doesn’t like making decisions. He demonstrates time and time again that he’s going to sit back and hope everything works itself out for him so he doesn’t have to make a hard decision. The whole 6 man rotation nonsense – that’s a perfect example. Everyone knew it was Hanson as the odd man out and who didn’t deserve a spot in the rotation, but Freddi couldn’t make a hard decision so he went with the 6 man rotation and got lucky that things worked themselves out. Freddi has got to go. I know you can’t fault Freddi for Kimbrel blowing it on Friday or pin all the blame on him, but he is not a leader or a decision maker. The guy is either paralyzed with self-doubt or analysis-paralysis – I think it’s the former.

WTG Braves for wasting a roster spot PLUS MONEY on Lyle Overbay. Can’t believe they’re paying this guy to do anything even remotely related to baseball. He’s that bad. You should’ve heard the Pittsburgh sportscasters talking about his contract a couple years ago with the Pirates right after they signed him. They said Overbay probably hung up the phone after being told about his contract with the Pirates and said to his wife “I can’t believe they’re going to pay me five million dollars to play baseball in Pittsburgh! I sure fooled them!” It was a bad signing for the Pirates and its a bad signing for the Braves especially since he’s a couple years older and a couple years worse. Why does Wren covet all of these old washed up guys who don’t help the team win ANY games AT ALL?

I can think of too many examples of this: Derrick Lee, Troy Glaus, Overbay, Livian Hernandez, Batista, the list goes on and on. Every year we make this same mistake. Over and over.

Spending on these old guys who can’t play anymore is our biggest problem. I think Wren honestly believes if he pays these old men enough money they’ll suddenly find the fountain of youth and revert back into the player they used to be a decade ago and play well. This hasn’t worked out for us the way they’re doing it. Its the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. That is exactly what we’re doing here folks, every single season.

Its much better to call up some younger guys who can impact the game and let them sink or swim in the big leagues. We let our decent prospects who aren’t quite good enough to be superstars grow cobwebs in the minors for 10 years before calling them up and give them a couple chances and release them when they don’t do well. Its just the wrong way to do things. Please get rid of Wren and Fredi if the Braves melt down this year again and miss the playoffs. After signing Overbay the Braves are clearly making desperate moves and that scares me.

Lyle Overbay vs. RHP .305/.383/.476/.859 Better than whatever crap line that Hinske has.

Lyle Overbay as a Pinch-hitter: .273/.304/.318/.623

Hitting .342/.457/.579/1.035 with 2 outs, and .286/.323/.393/.715 with 0 outs.

Hitting .294/.368/.353/.721 in high leverage situations…. .448/.484/.586/1.070 against finesse pitchers.

I’d post all his other great stats, but it’d be a long post…. but he has great numbers against fly-ball pitchers, ground ball pitchers. Great avg. when he hits line drives and fly balls. If he puts the ball in play, he has about a .330 batting avg. He has a .730/.711/1.135/1.846 avg. on balls hit to the OF. Good numbers when he pulls the ball or goes up the middle. He has gone the opposite way just 10 times, but has 5 hits.

So, any more doubts on Mr. Overbay?

Wonder how much Wren will work to keep some of the current bench players? To me bringing back David Ross and Reed Johnson are no brainers… Considering our soon-to-be situation in the OF, and McCann battling injuries and a possible decline. Even tho Jeff Baker hasn’t played a game for us he mashes LHP and can play 5 positions. I’d love to see this bench next season.

Ross, Janish, Francisco, Johnson, Baker. With Pastornicky being next in line at AAA.

We are 2/3 of the way through this sweep that I said was gonna happen. Frankly, it doesn’t really matter to me if we make the playoffs or not for one simple reason. I heard the other day that Fredi intends to try to manipulate the rotation so that Hudson pitches that one-game wild card playoff. That is just plain dumb to me. The Braves have only one pitcher that can be counted on to win that game, you we all know that it is Medlen. If anyone else is selected, then the Braves deserve to get their asses handed to them.

Fredi G. needs to be fired and either have TP take over as interim manager or bring someone in like Sandburg. We are 4-10 in our last 14 and showing no signs of life. With the meltdown we had last year combined with our play here recently we cannot wait to the offseason to make a move. TP’s one chance to be the Braves manager is to start as interim manager and do well. Ifthe Braves completely collapse again I would bet Wren would go a completely different direction.

Yes it is true Fredi cannot hit for the players and it is the players who must step it up but we cannot bench or trade our whole team. We can shake things up though by firing the manager.

However, the only 2 years that the Braves have losing records for the last month of play, they were missing players (Prado and Chipper in 2010, Hanson and JJ last year)

2009: 17-10 in Sept, 17-14 Sept/Oct

The Lance Armstrong thing really bugs me.

I guess there’s just nothing in sports in which you can put much faith. I try to be optimistic but why?

Let’s say GA wins another football title someday. Odds are it will be stripped eventually anyway due to who knows what violation. Look at Penn State. What an awful sports fan nightmare. And I do not mean to lessen what happened there. 15 seasons stricken from the books? Good grief. Why get so emotionally invested if that crap stands to happen? I’m rambling…..

booing is actually good for you as long as you don’t get too carried away. doesn’t mean you have to get personally nasty to a player.

I agree Nolie & I would never hate on a player personally. Right now I am frustrated with B Mac and I hope I am wrong but I honestly see his overall skills in decline. This is 2 yrs in a row where he has been not healthy and ineffective late in the season.

I can see Uggla maybe turning it around cause he is healthy but B-Mac and his leaving men on base — he is not the B-Mac he used to be.

Uggs is doing the job on D while B-Mac is struggling behind the plate in part due to the shoulder. It has to be due to injury. Not lack of hustle.

it is less painful being a regular pessimist. if things go bad you are already at least partially prepared for it, and if they go good, it is a special treat

I used to be like that. Prepare for the worst and when the worst doesn’t happen….bonus!

But I learned that being too invested in something I don’t have control over can be a destructive and miserable way to live. If I put all my hopes in the Braves, then what happens to my life when they don’t win the World Series?

Fredi sitting Bourn tonight was just plain stupid. I mean seriously this guy is just not getting it done as manager. You don’t sit Bourn in a pivotal race to the finish. Who you sit is either McCann or Uggla. Forget the matchup with Lee, you simply don’t sit Bourn. Nobody can defend that stupid move. The move to make was put Johnson in LF, Bourn in CF, and Prado at 2nd. Sit Uggla period. End of story. Fredi is no better than a AA manager at best. Absolutely disgusting.

The one thing we have going that is good is the young nucleus and a farm system that has the ability to keep this org from falling into what Pittsburgh was till this yr and KC still is KC until they actually go out and post us a respectable season.

We really need to develop a power pitching ACE from within th system, we thought we had that with Hanson but since the shoulder injury the stuff, location and mound presence is not the same.

I do not know if he can get the velocity back. That is why you have to have a draft. And you never never have too much pitching in your org as we have seen with injuries we have had to our pitchers.

Medlen looks like a bullog type and might be a young Tim Hudson or Maddux type.

I think it’s time to go to straight platoon at some postions— catcher- McCann only starts against righhanders. Heyward/Reed Johnson in rightfield. Mc Cann and Heyward have real low numbers against lefty pitching. I would leave Bourne in there almost every day, even thought he is dreadful against lefty pitching too, But he runs down everything in centefield, and we need his defense..
Sorry, you just gotta play the percentages the rest of the way. I would still play Uggla almost every day because there’s a chance for some sudden power.
One more bad start and Hanson has to exit the starting rotation in favor of Delgado. How come he wasn’t added to the expanded roster yet? Even if you don’t have him starting, he would be good for long relief. Or one of those extra-inning games, where all are good short relievers have been used, and we need somebody to pitch multiple innings and we don’t want it to Cory Gearin or somebody like that.
Ok, I’ve solved all the problems, everyone can rest easy.

Hasn’t been dreadful this year… .276/.341/.399/.740 against LHP

I have no problem with resting Bourn tonight. He needs more rest to stay fresh at the end of the season. It is one of the advantages of getting Reed Johnson. Perfect spot to rest him – day game after a night game that went into extras and against a tough lefty.

I was surprised to see McCann in there today

By the way, we ARE NOT going to blow it this year.
It took a “perfect storm” of circumstance and events last year for that to happen. A good example is how the Phillies played against the Cardinals down the stretch VERSUS how they played against the Braves.
Does anyone remember that in the first game of a four game series v. the Cardinals in Sept. , the Phillies clinch the NL East. Then they give all their starters the next three games offf, and the Cardinals take ALL three games.
Then, a couple of weeks later, the Phillies decide to get serious again so they will be ready for the playoffs. And when they play the Braves in the last series of the year. They play every single one of their starters in all the games—and all of them, including Howard and Utley, in ALL 13 innings of that last game. Guess they were trying to enter the playoffs on a roll… (lotta good that did them!).
So I don’t see stuff like that happening again.

since I love playing GM………….

If the Braves lose tomorrow, I would fire Fredi G. It just has not worked out for 1 reason or another. I would make either TP or Eddie Perez interim manager. I would also fire Roger. To replace the pitching coach I would beg Maddux (or Glavine or Smoltz) to come back as pitching coach for the rest of this year – 1-2 month committment, Chipper’s last year, help their old teammate Perez or TP, etc. If Eddie was manager I would try to get Maddux as pitching coach, Glavine assistant pitching coach (getting him to work with Minor and Maholm while also having Gilmartin travel with the team to work with Glavine) and I would try and get Smoltz bullpen coach. It is a pipe dream but to get those 3 on board, even for just a month, would be incredible. Great way for Chipper to go out.

With the team we have and this being Chipper’s last year, I would be aggressive and go for it.

More bad September baseball by the Braves. Fredi could very well be in his final month of managing this team. Lots of questionable decisions again. No sense of urgency. Bourn is resting up for…what exactly? The blind hurt left-handed catcher plays against Lee over the rested healthy right-handed one, who apparently sees well enough. The infield plays back while down 4-0, conceding another run. Janish is allowed to make the final out of the game. Not good. Not good.

After 3+ years around here I’m starting to figure it out. There are 4 types on this blog…

1. The morning geniuses who all believe they are THE SMARTEST PEOPLE ever conceived. Some are test tube babies. Most of them met at a Star Trek convention, I suspect half of them have learned Klingon to go with their BABIP and UZR babble. NEVER wrong. All claim to be related to Einstein in some way…

2. The people with a take (like myself) — usually longtime Braves fans who’ve seen the team’s ups and downs and know players prior to Dale Murphy without looking it up online. You know who you are. The most passionate. Most will go out on a limb and be ripped for it (or ignored) but probably the most knowledgable about Braves history. People with a life. People who remember and have survived 100+ loss seasons. Usually called haters by others. Who cares.

3. The wise people who usually never have a take, but italicize the takes of Group #2 and proceed to either (a) make fun of it or (b) end it with some kind of mildly personal attack designed to rile up those people. Generally intelligent, but usually people who love to argue. Sort of a hybrid between Groups 1 and 2. Usually blog winners in terms of number of posts — although group #1 delivers that category as well.

4. People with posters of the Clampetts in their room and generally speaking, people eliminated from the National Spelling Bee at birth.

As the Braves continue to tease us, please observe these four groups in action. Very entertaining.

Hey Freddie, this years team is playing like last years team in September and we all remember what happened then. What are you going to do to shock this team back to playing good. If not I guess the Braves will have a new direction in 13

Birdhair

September 2nd, 2012
9:14 am

The best solution is to fire Wren and search for a GM who actually values OBP and understand how to get the best bang for your buck. An ideal candidate would vehemently disagree with the signings of KK, lowe and extension given to Uggla as they would understand that better value could have easily been found elsewhere. The candidate would understand that inserting low OBP garbage ends innings and stifles run production.

FG has done a commendable job, but if the new GM could somehow convince Maddux to take over in the dugout then make the move. I understand that’s highly unlikely, but you have to make a convincing call and offer.

VaBravesFan

The Braves have the most walks in all of baseball, with the 11th best OBP. Which is not too shabby.

Good indication of our downfall.. For August our team produced a 699 OPS which was 22nd and to note that were the only contending team not to be above 700.

Pitching has been great, in August we produced a 2.94 ERA which was 2nd best but only went 15-14 in that stretch which is flat out pathetic considering how well we pitched.

It would be nice if Uggla was atleast slugging, which is what he was paid to do. Check out Adam Dunn.

So far Dunn is hitting 205/337/483 38 HR 88 RBI 190 K 94 BB

So far Uggla is hitting 208/340/373 17 HR 64 RBI 150 K 80 BB

Dan Uggla has a career 470 SLG, Career SLG before coming to Atlanta was 488 tho. We need the slugging Dan Uggla.

This isn’t making sense. The line up was pretty much set at the season’s start. Who was Wren going displace to bring others in? Freeman, Uggla (beginning of the season, not rear-view mirror analysis), Chipper, Prado, Heyward, McCann?

Wren did have Simmons called up, but he’s been injured. Could he have helped the OBP? Dunno.

Liberty hasn’t given Wren any payroll flexibility to go out and make moves. Besides we have a great ball club. Our downfall is the terrible seasons by McCann, Uggla, and Hanson. Then throw in Beachy our best pitcher goes down. Then youngins going threw growing pains.

I truly believe that if McCann and Uggla produced anywhere around there career norms this season that we’d be within a game of the Nationals or possibly in 1st. Were talking about 2 veteran proven producers not earning there paychecks.

There could potentially be seven managerial openings this winter with the Astros, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Indians, Phillies, Padres, and Rockies possibly looking to shake things up. While San Diego’s Bud Black is a well regarded manager, the Padres’ new ownership may look to install their own hire.

They should have added Atlanta to that list if we come up short again…

VaBravesFan,

Wren has tied his own hands by making poor spending decisions a la KK, Lowe, and Uggla. This were signings at very bad price points.

Wren could have signed Willingham for half the price that he’s paying Uggla. The bottom line is that we are winning in spite of Wren. JS is responsible for the players that are keeping us afloat. Wren has done nothing of positive significance to aid this club.

What is it going to take for fans like you to wake up and smell the coffee? Is it going to be another season missing the playoffs? We’re 1/4 under Wren thus far, and will likely be 1 season in 5 for playoff appearances under Wren. Wren walked into a gold-mine and has done nothing but stifle production and tie his own hands with dumb spending moves and his love for low obp players.

The fact that the Braves have the 3rd or 4th best record in the NL, lead the WC race, and were as close as 4GB of the Nats recently, all while having:

an injured BMac hit .225
an Uggla that isn’t hitting or slugging
had Pastornicky start at SS at the beginning of the season
Simmons get hurt and being replaced by a non-hitting SS
SP that at times was less than stellar (JJ, Minor early)
A pitiful bench to start the season (Diaz, Hinske, Wilson, Juan)

Frank Wren put together a great team….. And while I’m not a big Fredi fan, he’s done a decent job. Admit it.

That at the moment had no pitchers…. Freddie and Heyward were probably his too biggest prospects…. Oh and Schafer (he was a 1st round pick, and was well though of)

Wren rebuilt our pitching in the minors… good job Frank. Now he just needs to add some hitters, but we’ve just brought up 2 great hitters (Freeman and Heyward) possibly 3 (Simmons). Pitching is how we’re gonna stay competitive.

Throw in the following Wren historical collection for kicks: Julio Lugo, Greg Norton, Alex Grumpyface Gonzalez, Loaf Anderson, Nate McOut, Jack Wilson, Ruben Gotay, Joe Mather, Melky Cabrera, Rick Ankiel, Casey Kotchman and I think you’ve got a very strong comprehensive list of LOW OBP garbage players that Wren has either signed or traded for.

More nonsense. Maholm has been a fine addition. Francisco has been an able backup at third. Janish has been a super defensive shortstop. Reed Johnson has longer term value if he’s retained (and I think he will be).

Wren’s made some good additions. I wasn’t high on the Uggla signing at the time. Kawakami was overrated. Lowe was a veteran starter with consistently good production (at that time) that the club needed.

Wren does not under how to spend wisely (see notes above. He’s tied his own hands with uggla, kk, and lowe) and as a result he’s limited our flexibility.

We should have been and could currently be much better than where we are had we hired the right GM.

You leave yourself very little flexibility when you spend so much of your middle market budget on a second baseman on the wrong side of thirty that is not a proven big time producer. (I don’t call a career .343 obp guy a big time proven obp producer). And you can’t overrate home runs. That’s nonsensical. That $14M could have been spent on two or three helpful players. If you’re gonna spend $14M on one player on a middle market team you better make sure that you get it right. Suggest that it be on a proven high OBP OF producer.

I am not saying that all he does is right, he has made some mistakes. He has been grossly unlucky in the Mc Louth deal (who thought that would have flopped) & he also has had some unfortunate luck with the injuries to JJ and Hanson (I am not convinced he is healthy now).

As for Lowe, as much of an overpay he was its likely there is no WC in 2010. He was the carrier down the stretch in late ‘10.

Last yr it was combo of injuries & players just not stepping it up to play well down the stretch. You know who the best player was down the stretch in ‘11???? It was the much maligned Alex Gonzalez.

This yr is incomplete — but this is the second yr in a row that Mc Cann is failing late in the season.

Someone has to take charge and carry this team. Guys have to start hitting with RISP, and that is killing us in this series. Actually we need a couple of guys to step up and be real clutch.

Uggla and Mc Cann are on the hot seat. Can they step it up, I do not know. And we need Hudson to pitch some of his best ball in Sept. Got to check the Sept breakdowns on Hudson the last couple of yrs, have not remembered him being too clutch in September. Very good most of the time but okay, not great down the stretch.

We got 11 votes for August’s Defensive Player of the Month and eight of the 11 (who include ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark and former major leaguer Doug Glanville) felt that Janish was the best of the best.

Janish beat Michael Bourn out in the voting, making him the second Braves shortstop to win the award. The other is Andrelton Simmons, whom the Braves replaced with Janish when Simmons broke his finger after 33 games, a week following his naming as June’s top defender.

Bourn has gotten his fair share of attention for the fine season he’s had. Janish may get overlooked because of his lack of offensive contributions.

We won’t overlook him here.

Janish and his mates on the left side of the Braves infield had a particularly good month. They combined to turn 77 percent of ground balls hit to the left of the second base bag into outs. The major-league average was 72 percent. In raw numbers, the Braves’ left side was about 11 plays better than expected on those balls for the month.

DOB doing movie reviews now. — ace

Sure am. Like I always have, newcomer. (You really haven’t been around here long, have you? I didn’t realize that till you commented on me discussing movies. Well, just so you know, I also do a list of my top CDs of the year around Christmas time. So you begin to prepare yourself for that disruption.) And to be clear, I’m not going to change how I write my blog just because we have a few recent frequent posters here who happen to be extremely bitter, always negative, and a bit on the, well, limited side when it comes to outside interests.

It’s a blog, my man. Read the definition of “blog” — you can find it online. Personal facts and views are often a fundamental part of most successful blogs. This is my blog. You can read it if you want, or not. But I’m not ever, and I mean ever, going to kowtow to you or avoid discussing my interests because you don’t have many outside attacking the Braves and their followers.

If you don’t want my personal anecdotes or opinions, just read the straight news stories and skip the main or “focal” blog, the Daily DOB as it’s called. The one with the song lyrics at bottom (when I write it), to make it simple for you to identify. Skip that one. And skip all my comments here in the comments section, or read them and continually attack them. Again, no worries. But just know I’m not going to change what I write for you, an (always) unhappy commenter on the blog.

You can read my blogs and comment, or don’t. No worries. We’ll survive and thrive, as always. We’ve cultivated a solid audience here, and a few relative newcomers aren’t going to ruin that.

I would agree on all those counts. A three-day would help us prepare for the play-offs. MILWAUKEE series for example with a travel day and the first day of NATS thereafter. ROSS isn’t unduly exposed, and MAC can rest that shoulder.

But here are some thoughts: If Uggla and McCann don’t turn things around at the plate for the remainder of 2012, we will probably not make the playoffs. If we do not make the playoffs, Gonzalez will likely not be managing the Braves in 2013. Bourn is a very good player, but cannot carry the team (BTW, Bourn is not worth tying up any more than $12 million per year, so we will lose him). GO BRAVES!

So Fredi says he’s “worried” about the offense? Fans have been worried about the offense both last year and this year, because it’s been mostly weak and sucky. Sure, there have been a couple of times when everybody got hot at the same time and they’ve scored a bunch of runs, but the majority of the last two seasons have been poor.

Why they didn’t do anything about it, and pretended everything was just fine, that everyone who stunk it up last year was going to turn it around this year, is a mystery to many of us.

Its the fact that we have no ability what-soever to manufacture runs…We still have that sit and wait for the 3 run homer from B-Macc or Struggla Approach, and it has shown itself since the A.S. break.

How many times can people call a K or a pop up every time we have runners on 2nd and 3rd or the bases loaded, It happens all the #### time…

This is a Braves blog, Half Empty. We should be here to support, comment on, and criticize (yes, this is what normal fans do) the team, not each other. Of course, some people feel a need to attack others to affirm their sense of self-worth, but that isn’t normal behavior.

I don’t see most of what goes on here as simple criticism of the team and players. Making post after post ripping Uggla or Chipper or Fredi in nasty insulting terms is not criticism, it is simply angry venting.
Seems only fair that if y’all can vent against the team that irritates you, that others should be able to vent against those posters who irritate them.
Who is it, scoots?, who says it it free speech but not consequence-free speech?

I second that Brava — but Janish has done more than a commendable job in the field he has been outstanding in the field. I wish he could hit .250/.320 & he could have an everyday SS job. He is enjoyable to watch in the field and I think he and Simmons have helped Uggla’s D. Fourteen division titles and Bobby’s ego said the braves, without Mazzone could keep on winning titles. The next year with the same team the braves fell apart abd have never recovered. It may be twenty years before the braves win another title unless they hire a manager thats not obligated to Cox.

You do know that Bobby was not the one who would have kept Leo, right? That was the GM.
But Leo had already amassed a rep around baseball as a hardhead who could not communicate with younger players, and since he has been out of baseball there have been many pitching coach hirings and not one team has shown any interest in him. Gotta be a reason for that.
He was ok no doubt, but he made his bones on the backs of three HOFers who would have been great no matter who coached them.

It’s lose-lose.

If the Braves get the runs, the fans get the runs too.

Dunkin Donuts are yankee doughnuts. Not really an option, and I don’t get the fuss over the coffee either.

====

In 1950, Bill Rosenberg opened the first Dunkin’ Donuts shop in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Vernon Rudolph bought a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe from a New Orleans French chef, rented a building in what is now historic Old Salem in Winston-Salem, NC and began selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts on July 13, 1937 to local grocery stores.

Yeah, I imagine salary will come into play with that decision, nolie. He’d sure be a better bat than Hinske, going down the stretch and it would give them a chance to showcase him for possible future trade. With Freddie, he doesn’t seem to fit into the Braves’ plans.

Odds and ends: Uggla not happy; Chipper not planning a team meeting

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez shuffled his lineup for Sunday afternoon’s matchup against Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels. He moved Jason Heyward down in the lineup and stuck with his plan to keep Dan Uggla out of the lineup when he there is not a favorable matchup.

Gonzalez revealed this plan last Sunday before a matchup against San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum. But that did not stop Uggla from taking time to argue against this decision while meeting with his manager on Sunday afternoon.

“I hit a two-run homer off (Hamels) in the last game last year to put us up,” Uggla said. “It’s not a numbers thing for me, especially in September. It doesn’t make any sense to me at all…Nobody agrees with not playing. It’s just because I know what I can do, especially in September when I’ve been there before in big-game situations, especially last year. It’s frustrating to say the least.”

As Hamels was making a three-inning postseason tuned on the final day of the 2011 season, Uggla drilled a two-run homer off his nemesis. Still he has batted just .145 (8-for-55) with two home runs in his career against the veteran left-hander.

Uggla has recorded at least one hit in each of the past five games and homered twice during this span. Still he has batted .152 with a .276 slugging percentage in his past 73 games.

When the Braves face left-handed pitching over the next few weeks, Chipper Jones might continue to spell Heyward in the third spot of the lineup. During Sunday’s matchup against Hamels, Jones batted third and Heyward was moved to the sixth spot.

Heyward earned the opportunity to hit in the third spot while batting .293 with 18 home runs and a .990 OPS in the 80 games he has played since June 2. But against left-handed pitchers during this span, he has batted .225 with four home runs and a .630 OPS. Against right-handers, he has batted .349 with 14 homers and a 1.099 OPS.

No plans for a team meeting: Chipper Jones made it known that he has found no reason to hold a team meeting with the hope it might halt the Braves’ recent struggles.

“Trust me, when I feel like something needs to be said I say it,” Jones said. “That’s my job. I don’t need to say anything right now. I’m not going to harp on the past. I’m not going to harp on yesterday and I’m not going to harp on tomorrow. We show up. We play the game as well as we can today and let the chips fall where they may. Any other approach other than that is not a good thing.”

The Braves entered Sunday having lost 10 of their previous 14 games. Still Jones is among those from the baseball world who seem to believe team meetings can cause more harm than good.

“We are mindless numbskulls,” Jones said. “We need to think as little as possible. We’re routine oriented and regimented. Any break in that makes us start thinking. That’s when bad (stuff) starts happening.”

Good morning all
The MARLINS owners were smart enough to fire FREDI in midseason. Why arn’t we? This could be the answer, LIBERTY MEDIA may have kept more control of baseball operations than we are told [as I would if Iwere the owner] LIBERTY may have told JS and FW not to fire FREDI because he still has next year on his contract and they do not want to pay him not to MGR. Of course I never would have given a untested MGR than a one year contract.

nobody should be happy when they are sitting but to say it is understandable when Uggla is out of the lineup is an understatement too. Start hitting and then find yourself in the lineup daily. Do not produce at all – expect to sit

I have to say that I am more sympathetic to Fredi now than I have ever been.

Thank you Fredi for not accepting Cap Tipping as an excuse for this sorry offense.

Of course Fredi is probably seeing his job slip away, so Fredi has decided to stop tipping his own cap. If I were Fredi I would tell Mac and Uggla that I was sorry if I hurt their feelings but they are gonna sit for a while. Mac and Uggla will be back next year if they don’t get another hit this season. Fredi will be out of work and those two will still be cashing a check no matter how badly they stink.

wonder if we will see more of the Uggla for Soriano rumors in the offseason………….

everybody who wants the Braves to move Uggla needs to remember the only way we move Uggla is to either eat so much of his contract that it is not worth moving him, or we take a bad contract in its place.
