Alarming stat: There are four teams closer to the Braves in wild-card standings today than any team was through same point (133 games) of 2011 season. Yes, there are two wild-card spots available, but second-place team was nine games back at this point a year ago.
Lol, my handle is in honor of the beloved football coach at the university of georgia. mark richt!
Btw, the buzzards sure are circling. Many of these bloggers, like vabravesfan, point to our current record. And yeah, we’re certainly in contention for a playoff spot, but what these bloggers don’t get is that we could be much better, yes, we could be, had wren actually spent money wisely and brought in a beltran or willingham, or maybe traded for allen craig or chase headley. But Wren unwisely blew his load on drunk lowe, an unproven japanese pitcher, and uggla. How can u blame the players? It would be much different had we signed a proven obp commodity or a proven young ace and he all of a sudden fell of the map. We overspent on uggla bottom line. So that’s wren’s fault!!
I see that another genius with 20/20 hindsight is contaminating the blog with his nonsense. For the record, the season before Uggla joined the Braves (2010) he was third among NL second-baseman in OBP, and first in OPS. Yeah, terrible acquisition…

The MARLINS owners were smart enough to fire FREDI in midseason. Why arn’t we? This could be the answer, LIBERTY MEDIA may have kept more control of baseball operations than we are told [as I would if Iwere the owner] LIBERTY may have told JS and FW not to fire FREDI because he still has next year on his contract and they do not want to pay him not to MGR. Of course I never would have given a untested MGR than a one year contract.
And overspending on ugga is on Wren. It’s FG’s responsibility to play ross more when mac is struggling so badly.
You leave yourself very little flexibility when you spend so much of your middle market budget on a second baseman on the wrong side of thirty that is not a proven big time producer. (I don’t call a career .343 obp guy a big time proven obp producer). And you can’t overrate home runs. That’s nonsensical. That $14M could have been spent on two or three helpful players. If you’re gonna spend $14M on one player on a middle market team you better make sure that you get it right. Suggest that it be on a proven high OBP OF producer.

Very BUMB and very much deserving of a round of Boos.

Don’t know about .500 ball, but they may have trouble reaching my preseason perdiction of 85 wins.

Good for Padres fans they got rid of their bad owner.
At least we have a mediocre owner. Not great or even disgustingly bad but mediocre. It really could be worse, we should be in a league where you play only 120 to 130 games. Than we would have a chance to win.
So how much time do you given Wren? Miss the playoffs this year and it’s 1 playoff appearance in 5 seasons under him. 0 playoff series wins.
We’d easily serve ourselves right by finding someone else who values OBP, understands price points, and how to effectively spend given a middle market budget.

George, his pitching style is a little different. However, he still has somewhat of a dart throwing arm. He really does need to work on something different. Hell, side arm, or submarine style may work.
Birdhar — I disaagree with you on putting just about all of this on Wren.
I am not saying that all he does is right, he has made some mistakes. He has been grossly unlucky in the Mc Louth deal (who thought that would have flopped) & he also has had some unfortunate luck with the injuries to JJ and Hanson (I am not convinced he is healthy now).
As for Lowe, as much of an overpay he was its likely there is no WC in 2010. He was the carrier down the stretch in late ‘10.
Last yr it was combo of injuries & players just not stepping it up to play well down the stretch. You know who the best player was down the stretch in ‘11???? It was the much maligned Alex Gonzalez.
This yr is incomplete — but this is the second yr in a row that Mc Cann is failing late in the season.
Someone has to take charge and carry this team. Guys have to start hitting with RISP, and that is killing us in this series. Actually we need a couple of guys to step up and be real clutch.
Uggla and Mc Cann are on the hot seat. Can they step it up, I do not know. And we need Hudson to pitch some of his best ball in Sept. Got to check the Sept breakdowns on Hudson the last couple of yrs, have not remembered him being too clutch in September. Very good most of the time but okay, not great down the stretch.
Repost for those folks who just came on.

Disgusted, but you overlook all of the outs and innings that grumpyface was responsible for in every other month. And his best month was probably still worse than any month that escobar had ever had with us. we could have been a ws contender in 2010 had we kept escobar and blanco vs trading for ankiel and gonzalez. We couldve made a move or two that helped our team vs hurt the team. It’s the idiotic moves like these that stifle teams’ run production.
You overlook the impact that Wren’s poor spending has had. We’re paying the drunk one $10M this season to pitch for someone else. Hey, that might be okay if we had unlimited funds, but we’re a middle market team and we have to be wise with our significant investments. Wren has failed.
But i do agree with you that mcdowell may not be the best guy to work with individual pitchers and help them with their mechanics and focus. Leo Mazzone was the mastermind of reviving careers and helping to create a disciplined approach.

I know BOBBY recomended the FREDI hire, because BOBBY was upset MARLINS let him go. I believe DOB wrote that, but not sure thats where I read it.
We got 11 votes for August’s Defensive Player of the Month and eight of the 11 (who include ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark and former major leaguer Doug Glanville) felt that Janish was the best of the best.
Janish beat Michael Bourn out in the voting, making him the second Braves shortstop to win the award. The other is Andrelton Simmons, whom the Braves replaced with Janish when Simmons broke his finger after 33 games, a week following his naming as June’s top defender.
Bourn has gotten his fair share of attention for the fine season he’s had. Janish may get overlooked because of his lack of offensive contributions.
I was not aganist the FREDI hire when it took place, but not at all happy with the results after. I do not want to see the braves fail to make post season CHIPPERS final year.
Janish and his mates on the left side of the Braves infield had a particularly good month. They combined to turn 77 percent of ground balls hit to the left of the second base bag into outs. The major-league average was 72 percent. In raw numbers, the Braves’ left side was about 11 plays better than expected on those balls for the month.

Nor was I. In retrospect, the fact that he was fired in Florida should have been a red flag, but I trusted Bobby’s judgement on the matter when he publicly rebuked Loria. Fredi is a nice guy, but he’s just not a good baseball manager and it shows.

jeffery Please give me a honest answer [not sarcastic]. Are you happy with the BRAVES preformance the past almost two seasons?
Sure am. Like I always have, newcomer. (You really haven’t been around here long, have you? I didn’t realize that till you commented on me discussing movies. Well, just so you know, I also do a list of my top CDs of the year around Christmas time. So you begin to prepare yourself for that disruption.) And to be clear, I’m not going to change how I write my blog just because we have a few recent frequent posters here who happen to be extremely bitter, always negative, and a bit on the, well, limited side when it comes to outside interests.
It’s a blog, my man. Read the definition of “blog” — you can find it online. Personal facts and views are often a fundamental part of most successful blogs. This is my blog. You can read it if you want, or not. But I’m not ever, and I mean ever, going to kowtow to you or avoid discussing my interests because you don’t have many outside attacking the Braves and their followers.
If you don’t want my personal anecdotes or opinions, just read the straight news stories and skip the main or “focal” blog, the Daily DOB as it’s called. The one with the song lyrics at bottom (when I write it), to make it simple for you to identify. Skip that one. And skip all my comments here in the comments section, or read them and continually attack them. Again, no worries. But just know I’m not going to change what I write for you, an (always) unhappy commenter on the blog.
You can read my blogs and comment, or don’t. No worries. We’ll survive and thrive, as always. We’ve cultivated a solid audience here, and a few relative newcomers aren’t going to ruin that.
Jason Heyward is 2 for his last 21 and his OPS has dropped near 30 points over the last five games. Came out of nowhere, to be honest.

the excuses will begin later today or this coming week….
He’s young. He’s too young. He’s tired. He need a day off to clear his head. His thumb still hurts. It’s his shoulder. Too many stolen bases. It’s early. It’s hot. It’s late. FG makes him feel bad. FG makes him feel unwanted. He’s inexperienced. Willie mccovey was 25 before he did much. He’s young. He needs to shave. It’s the pressure. It’s DOB’s fault. He was using the wrong bat…
for all your complaints about this blog, it sure seems like you cannot get enough of it lately.
This blog is a gift to Braves fans. It also is a gift for people who want to get away from the politics/religion heated debates and talk about sports, movies, music, etc.
don’t bite the hand that feeds you ace. No one is forcing you to read this blog
Can WREN to stop the st-o-o-o-pid player personnel moves in the future.
Fire FREDI to stop the stoopid line-up choices and in-game machinations.
Cut CHIPPER for being a wimpy me-first money-grubber.
Replace McCANN and UGGLA for being auto outs when it counts most.
Blame HANSON for being alive.
Blame WREN for having all of the aforementioned players on the team right now.
What did i leave out naysayers?
Oh yeah, blame losses on fans not attending maxed-out games.
BLAME positive bloggers who can’t see the hand-writing on the wall that says. the BRAVES suc and are toast yet once again.
I say take heart, the September collapse won’t be near to historic this season. We started early.
phil – no excuses. Heyward is an elite young player who will go through slumps and go through times where the ball must look the size of a grapefruit. Baseball is always a game of adjustments and requires continual work – in the cages, on the tee, in the film room, etc. Ask Maddux or Chipper
Ok, outta here for a bit. Shame we have to wait till 5:00 for game, it is not because they are trying to avoid a FALCONS game, don’t know the reason for the late start.
McCann’s shoulder is still bothering him more than he is letting on and now his vision is bothering him as well. Nothing wrong with taking a 3-5 day rest to regroup
Jeffrey d – absolutely that’s what ACE does…funny that the same folks constantly flip out over the guy, including DOB. Good ol repetitive, mind-numbing entertainment!
“….McCann’s shoulder is still bothering him more than he is letting on and now his vision is bothering him as well. Nothing wrong with taking a 3-5 day rest to regroup….”
I would agree on all those counts. A three-day would help us prepare for the play-offs. MILWAUKEE series for example with a travel day and the first day of NATS thereafter. ROSS isn’t unduly exposed, and MAC can rest that shoulder.
“Alarming stat: There are four teams closer to the Braves in wild-card standings today than any team was through same point (133 games) of 2011 season. Yes, there are two wild-card spots available, but second-place team was nine games back at this point a year ago.”
Expected, not alarming. The writing is on the wall. This team will not occupy one of those two spots. Not with their lack of offense and not with Fredi at the helm.
There is a blurb aticle in this weeks USA Weekly that states a study of “dry eyes”,It suggests caffiene can help not hinder the condition by aiding in the production of tears
Jeffrey d – in game drivel is some of the best stuff going here. Why certain folks get so upset about it is just beyond me. 90 percent of it isn’t nearly as serious sounding as some think it is. I’ve never understood why the otherwise very intelligent can’t understand that. Or why it matters so much. Have fun with it.
I checked the standings this morning and was stunned/shocked that yes, we are, in fact, still 4 games to the good in the “race” for the right to be eliminated in one game come early October.
Starting to remind me of the 82 braves that lost 19 of 21 and were still given the west title due to just how awful the competition was too…
Today’s lineup is Uggla-free! Apparently Frediot is choosing his spots. Shouldn’t be that hard to do, since Uggla struggles against right-handers. And left-handers. And batters who hit grounders in his direction.
Well said, phil. As I’ve said before, some folks take this blog much too seriously and, as you noted, it usually seems to be the more intelligent ones.
I have been a Braves fan for quite some time, and will be a Braves fan no matter what happens in 2012 or beyond. Would I like to see them reach the playoffs and do well? Of course. But here are some thoughts: If Uggla and McCann don’t turn things around at the plate for the remainder of 2012, we will probably not make the playoffs. If we do not make the playoffs, Gonzalez will likely not be managing the Braves in 2013. Bourn is a very good player, but cannot carry the team (BTW, Bourn is not worth tying up any more than $12 million per year, so we will lose him). GO BRAVES!

Good morning all
The MARLINS owners were smart enough to fire FREDI in midseason.

The Braves have tried to work with Hanson on his mechanics etc., but Tommy really has not changed that much.
Maybe he can’t & he is what he is. The coaching staff and mgr can only do so much.
There s something about Hanson;s body laguage and mindset as well as durablity that I don’t like, don’t think he will be an outstandig MLB pitcher.
He really cannot get it done after July.

We won’t overlook him here.

DOB doing movie reviews now. — ace

I would agree on all those counts. A three-day would help us prepare for the play-offs. MILWAUKEE series for example with a travel day and the first day of NATS thereafter. ROSS isn’t unduly exposed, and MAC can rest that shoulder.

GO BRAVES!
