Stop your belly aching. If Howard and Utley were healthy all year and Halladay didn’t miss 2 months and the new best catcher (pudgey wudgey isn’t top 5) Ruiz played all year these games would be meaningless as the Phillies have owned the Braves with the exception of beating their second string this year and the Braves would be what’re the Phillies are and well you guys are real juggernauts in September. If the Phil’s fall out of contention ( ‘07 7 out with 17 to play but nobody between them and Muts. Phillies basically can’t stand a loss. What’s disconcerting without getting into details is a month ago he was auditioning guys. One game in particular up 4-1against Brewers and instead of bringing in Papplebon for 4 out save he leaves one of the new phucks in and he loads bases and Hart hits grand slam to beat them 5-4. Be happy you’re in the hunt. Pirates will wilt, Dodgers have no pitching, and well you’re still in the drivers seat but for those who like me get too involved ( it was actually enjoyable when it didn’t matter if the Phil’s won) Now they put me back in the pizza oven. If they drop 2 in a row from here on in they’re done. If you blow it this year again there’ll be an job opening in the Atlanta area.
If you blow it you all may think back to the shot heard round the world by our 3rd string catcher. You still do have the best closer from April – August 30th.
I think DOB posted something similar about percentages last year at this time. People blamed him.
Phooey.
Blame is on the culture created here by the manager. And allowed to occur by the GM. They’re starting to get flashbacks and Gonzalez has no chance of pulling these guys out of it.
Maybe they’ll hang on. Who knows. But it will be because of the fading veteran leadership — not the overmatched field commander. Nice guy — brutal strategist and motivator. Awful.
At this point, I think it would be best for the Braves to simply lose 10-12 in a row and get it over with. No sense dragging it out to the last weekend like last year.

Fredi,
There is still time to salvage the season. Walk into Frank Wren’s office tomorrow and tell him you are naming Prado your starting 2nd baseman ,Ross will catch 6 games a week ,Boscan will be his backup. McCann will assume Hinskie’s job as left handed pinch hitter.Your other option is to do nothing go and keep running Uggla and McCann out there every day and watch your playoff chances slip away again this year. And Wren will turn you into a 3rd base coach in another MLB organization.might be the best thing for your long term health.
I’m just glad the NFL kicks off Wednesday night and I can see if my G-Men can win back-to-back. Now, there’s a team that knows how to show up when it matters most.
I was at the Braves game today and after the game ended a Phillies player came out to visit family. I was able to get an autograph however I have no idea who he is. I got him to autograph the program. Does anyone know of a way to identify the signature? I woul greatly appreciate it.
It’s pretty obvious that Freddi doesn’t like making decisions. He demonstrates time and time again that he’s going to sit back and hope everything works itself out for him so he doesn’t have to make a hard decision. The whole 6 man rotation nonsense – that’s a perfect example. Everyone knew it was Hanson as the odd man out and who didn’t deserve a spot in the rotation, but Freddi couldn’t make a hard decision so he went with the 6 man rotation and got lucky that things worked themselves out. Freddi has got to go. I know you can’t fault Freddi for Kimbrel blowing it on Friday or pin all the blame on him, but he is not a leader or a decision maker. The guy is either paralyzed with self-doubt or analysis-paralysis – I think it’s the former.
I know people are eager to ditch Fredi at the end of the year, but that’s not the way to think just yet.
If we’re firing him it means we didn’t make it and we are watching a meaningless end to the Chipper era. Very sad if you ask me. I’ll worry about Fredi after that year……but this season is on McCann and Uggla never getting it going. Whole year wasted by two guys we were counting on. Fredi was counting on them, the organization was counting on them….and they failed to help.
Leadership is driven by influence and among other things respect for the experience and winning tradition of the leader. These are clear traits that Fredi does not have, and why he fails to inpact the team performance.
Help – I’m not the one asking people on the blog how to identify a signature they can’t see and don’t care about. Why don’t you go on a Philly blog and ask someone who cares? Or better yet figure it out on your own

postgame quotes are up….it’s as if you guys were in Fredi’s office with us, when he said “enough is enough” with the tipping your cap stuff. have a look:
“Huddy with a less than stellar performance today… he sure didn’t fool anyone”
Yes, He can”t be counted on to start that Stupid one game playoff for the WC. Good Teams can beat him because he is predictable because he has been around the league for so long

Not really sure, but I did check his career splits on BBRef…. Sept/Oct. is Hudson’s worst month in terms of ERA, oppo. avg/obp/slg/ops, and WHIP. He has pitched the most games for his career in May and Sept./Oct (both with 71 career starts)
WTG Braves for wasting a roster spot PLUS MONEY on Lyle Overbay. Can’t believe they’re paying this guy to do anything even remotely related to baseball. He’s that bad. You should’ve heard the Pittsburgh sportscasters talking about his contract a couple years ago with the Pirates right after they signed him. They said Overbay probably hung up the phone after being told about his contract with the Pirates and said to his wife “I can’t believe they’re going to pay me five million dollars to play baseball in Pittsburgh! I sure fooled them!” It was a bad signing for the Pirates and its a bad signing for the Braves especially since he’s a couple years older and a couple years worse. Why does Wren covet all of these old washed up guys who don’t help the team win ANY games AT ALL?
I can think of too many examples of this: Derrick Lee, Troy Glaus, Overbay, Livian Hernandez, Batista, the list goes on and on. Every year we make this same mistake. Over and over.
Spending on these old guys who can’t play anymore is our biggest problem. I think Wren honestly believes if he pays these old men enough money they’ll suddenly find the fountain of youth and revert back into the player they used to be a decade ago and play well. This hasn’t worked out for us the way they’re doing it. Its the definition of insanity, doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. That is exactly what we’re doing here folks, every single season.
Its much better to call up some younger guys who can impact the game and let them sink or swim in the big leagues. We let our decent prospects who aren’t quite good enough to be superstars grow cobwebs in the minors for 10 years before calling them up and give them a couple chances and release them when they don’t do well. Its just the wrong way to do things. Please get rid of Wren and Fredi if the Braves melt down this year again and miss the playoffs. After signing Overbay the Braves are clearly making desperate moves and that scares me.
bullcrap. Overbay hit .292 .367 .448 .815 in Arizona, and even a bit better the end of last season out there. Sure as hell can’t be any worse than Hinske and he is only costing them 170 thou or so
someone must not be checking the stats… Overbay hit .292/.367/.448/.815 with Arizona… he’s a bat to replace Hinske who has sukked all year. We need a lefty off the bench, hence Overbay was gotten. Great move imo, and he’ll be cheap.
Speaking of Overbay, the front page says he’s looking forward to a “chance at postseason play”. The ironic thing is that he would have a much better chance if he were still on the Pirates.
I’m starting to worry…but always there’s a chance to improve, if the phil’s are playing good with bench guys, bring to the field this line up:
CF. Reed
RF. Constanza
LF. Hinskie
C. Ross
1b. Overbay
3b. Fransisco
2b. Pastor
SS. Janish
Mccan, chip, heyward and uggla need a break…the bench have to bat better unless they get 9 zeros…man this could become the biggest shame of MLB history, two colaps in a raw, it can be true!
Lyle Overbay vs. RHP .305/.383/.476/.859 Better than whatever crap line that Hinske has.
Lyle Overbay as a Pinch-hitter: .273/.304/.318/.623
Hitting .342/.457/.579/1.035 with 2 outs, and .286/.323/.393/.715 with 0 outs.
Hitting .294/.368/.353/.721 in high leverage situations…. .448/.484/.586/1.070 against finesse pitchers.
I’d post all his other great stats, but it’d be a long post…. but he has great numbers against fly-ball pitchers, ground ball pitchers. Great avg. when he hits line drives and fly balls. If he puts the ball in play, he has about a .330 batting avg. He has a .730/.711/1.135/1.846 avg. on balls hit to the OF. Good numbers when he pulls the ball or goes up the middle. He has gone the opposite way just 10 times, but has 5 hits.
VJ said it was utter nonsense that we could tell anything abou tthe players body language but some of these guys sure look like they are in the tank. Coming to the plate with that 0-2 count in their mind.
last year having a big lead the team thought it was safe. No way to blow a lead that big. Maybe in a strange way having a smaller lead will get these guys to step it up. Though it hasn’t seemed so in the last few games.
someone must not be checking the stats… Overbay hit .292/.367/.448/.815 with Arizona… he’s a bat to replace Hinske who has sukked all year. We need a lefty off the bench, hence Overbay was gotten. Great move imo, and he’ll be cheap.
I’ll leave it in, one can never know for sure in baseball. The one thing that Teddy did get right in that long post was that Lyle did stink in Pittsburgh in 2011. good gamble for the small money though for us
phil — with the new monicker “vitriol” it would probably be better if you limited your posts from 6 a.m.-12 noon so the Einsteins could have a word to discuss once the recorded episode of Star Trek concluded.
Wow. Vitriol. Wonder what some of those guys think.
Chipper Jones @RealCJ10
Don’t wanna talk @ bball. Sittin here watchin Bama bout to take Michigan out behind the shed! Damn, dem boys r good! Can’t mess with da SEC!
well we now have Baker to play once in a while instead of a lefty hitter. yeah its frustrating, I just refuse to allow it to get me all that upset. Life is too short
The moves Wren has made so far were the moves that I thought were needed to be made before the season. I said we needed to improve our bench depth. I thought picking up Hinske’s option was a mistake, figured we’d choose to go younger and more athletic instead of paying 1.5 million for Hinske…
i think wren did not want to do a boston though and give the impression of wholesale panic-driven changes, and for the most part i think that was a smart approach.woulda made an exception in Hinske’s case though
Wonder how much Wren will work to keep some of the current bench players? To me bringing back David Ross and Reed Johnson are no brainers… Considering our soon-to-be situation in the OF, and McCann battling injuries and a possible decline. Even tho Jeff Baker hasn’t played a game for us he mashes LHP and can play 5 positions. I’d love to see this bench next season.
Ross, Janish, Francisco, Johnson, Baker. With Pastornicky being next in line at AAA.
Is there a mercy rule in college football Okie State 63 Savannah State 0 ,11:33 left in 3rd quarter. And guess who Savannah State plays next week? Florida State.

So, any more doubts on Mr. Overbay?

The moves Wren has made so far were the moves that I thought were needed to be made before the season. I said we needed to improve our bench depth. I thought picking up Hinske’s option was a mistake, figured we’d choose to go younger and more athletic instead of paying 1.5 million for Hinske…
