I know what has to be done……I just wish I had thought of this earlier!

We have McCann, turns out he’s a catcher. He’s blessed with ‘catcher speed’. His body is failing him and we send him out there.

Let’s take on the Mauer contract to go along with Mac……have TWO bodies failing and play them on rotating weeks (not days, we have to let them find a groove!).

Tehran, or Delgado will be in rotation soon. We don’t need any more high priced pitchers……We need a high priced bat to play LF, so Prado can play 3rd base next year.

Sunday night MLB is way more watchable now than it was with Miller/Morgan.

Certainly, Hershiser is much more cerebral than Morgan and is thus more entertaining, but Miller gets unfairly tarred with the Joe Morgan brush, in my opinion.

“are we sure we wanna move Prado who is ranked as the second best defensive LFer this season?”

He’ll probably turn into the 2nd best defensive 3rd baseman if he moves there. ;)

I don’t think Prado will ever have a position. Braves don’t have enough money to have a starter at all 8 positions.

I think they’ll ask Prado where he wants to play for his input and i’d be shocked if he wanted to stay out in LF. If he wants third, I say they give it to him.

It would get more interesting if he wanted 2B :)

TOBF, I wouldn’t defend the #1, #2 #3 thing.. that doesn’t really matter. Fact is, he’s a top flight pitcher that could anchor our staff past this season, won’t cost us any prospects and he’s still rather young, not to mention we’ve got a boatload of money coming off the books. There’s a good chance we may try to extend McCann over the offseason and I seriously doubt it will take what some think it will.

A rotation full of #3s? The Braves didn’t win in the ’90s with a rotation full of #3s. Rather, they had multiple #1s. I’m not saying that we need many aces, but if we can have quite a few top of the rotation pitchers, that’d be great.

The thing is that I don’t view decent number three pitchers as the detriment that some here do.

I don’t either…. that means that the pitcher is league average… that’s fine. However, these guys likely pitch to contact (like JJ, look how that turned out, even before injury “busted” him) and put up ERAs near 3.6-7…. career ERA’s of about 4….BB/9 about 3, K/9 around 5.5, and a 10 H/9.

That’s fine for your 3,4,5 pitchers… but not for your 1-2 starters. Power arms are better. Guys that are #1s and 2s. I doubt that any of the last 5-6 WS Champs had rotations filled with #3s. They all had an ace and a #2, or 2 good #2s in their rotation.

Dan with just 1 error since the ASG? Wow, I didn’t know he was that good… that oughta shut up the haters on his defense. Just checked on BBRef, for the 1st time in his career, Dan is above average on runs saved, being 1 run above avg. Keep it up Danny boy!

At this point, he would probably be as effective at Hanson’s been lately. I think there’s no doubt that if Sheets comes back, he’ll take Tommy’s spot in the rotation. I don’t think Huddy, Medlen, Maholm and Minor are going anywhere. I’ll be curious to see how Tommy handles this. Sucks for him, but until he can get some velocity/location back on his fastball, he’s going to give up 4-5 runs every time out and this team is not scoring enough runs to make up for that.

Classy move by the organization. With Janish and Simmons, he no longer had a spot and by releasing him now, at least he has a chance to sign on with another team and be eligible for the postseason. Most teams would have kept him on the roster and released him whenever they wanted without any consideration for pursuing other chances. That’s why I love the Braves, they do it the right way.

When Sheets comes back, I think the Braves can try the Rockies strategy.

Start Hanson, and let him go for 4 innings (most of his trouble happens in the 5th anyways). And then bring in Ben Sheets for the next 4 innings (that will reduce his workload and help keep his arm fresh).

And play the 9th inning by ear

I dont think the Braves have any ace on staff right now (and DOB said something similar in one of his blogs). We have #2s and up. I think we need an ace on staff. Its hard to win a WS without an ace (imo).

We need a high priced bat to play LF, so Prado can play 3rd base next year..

That’s one option. Or you could go after David Wright (assuming he wants out of NY) and keep Prado in LF. Plus if we sign a high priced pitcher, Frank Wren could explore using one (or more) of his young pitchers in a trade to bring back a solid outfielder who would be under team control for a while.

“Simmons taking ground balls here at Turner Field right now.”

What are we waiting for start him. He can hit as well as Pastornicky, Wilson, and Janish combined even with a broken hand.

Are we all cool with saying this is a collapse if we don’t make the 1-game playoff this year?

No. What if the Braves play well and, say, the Cards play better. Is that a collapse?

Perhaps I should say if the Cards and Pirates, for instance, play better than a Braves’ team that plays well?

Jeff R – In case you misread, I did mean miss the 1-game playoff completely. Like not play in it….

Got it, MFin04. I’d still say that if the Braves were out-played – but played well – that’s not a collapse. A collapse would be the Braves playing poorly and tanking (similar to last season).

Got ya. With the Braves current lead and schedule, I think it would have to be considered a collapse to miss the playoffs.

MFin04, St. Louis only trails the Braves by 3 games. The Pirates are back 3.5 games. The Dodgers are 4.5 games off the Braves’ pace.

The Braves hardly have an insurmountable lead over their competitors. Anything can still happen.
