Based off the focal blogs, DOB has been working from August 23rd to August 29th (seven days) and traveled from Atlanta to San Francisco (no big deal…) to San Diego.
Let me ask you this, George George – do you normall work 7 days straight and travel across the country?
I spect Minor domination would be to much to ask for
Of course…. Minor’s been awesome since June1…. 3.16 ERA with an oppo. stat line of .218/.280/.384/.664, and he’s thrown 62% strikes…. He doesn’t need to be dropped from the rotation, Hanson does.

jeffery, Take the TV guys, Joe Simson takes a week ofrf wraped around the all-star game and thats it. I don’t think Chip even takes that much time off. They are off when games are on ESPN or BIG FOX, but thier time off is nothing like our “hard working reporter” takes off.
Mike Minor has put up an above .500 record in both of his short stays in the Majors (3-2 in ‘10, 5-3 last year). He needs 4 wins this month to continue that streak… Hope he gets that done. Would sukk to have a losing record in his first real good season.
Unless I am mistaken, Chip & Joe fly on the team charter. Beat reporters do not. Chip & Joe do not have to write stories or meet deadlines for papers. Beat reporters do. Also, DOB and Carroll are assigned to games. They do not just decided to take games off. And just because they are not covering a game does not mean they are not working. Or tending to things that most of us take for granted, like laundry and grocery shopping and other things that we have time for because we don’t travel all the time and we get 2 out of every 7 days off.

I sure did answer him, if the tv guys can make all the road trips and still work a large percentage of the games, why can’t DOB? — george
Are you seriously that clueless, as to the difference in the time demands of the job — writing blogs all day and night, covering games, writing game stories on deadline afterward, notebooks before game, etc. — in addition to the travel schedules of those who fly on team charters and team buses, as opposed to those of us who make our own travel arrangements and fly commercial, etc? Seriously, do you have any idea the difference in the job requirements?
Let me get this straight. The Braves have a HUGE problem facing LHP. They have a RIGHT handed 1B (Mejia) who was just named the top power hitting prospect in AAA by Baseball America. He was also named International League Rookie of the year. Yet, he isn’t being named as a CERTAIN call up tomorrow. Do the Braves not understand that Mejia could be a big asset as RH thumper down the stretch????? Right now the only RH hitter on the bench with any power is David Ross. Mejia would give them two guys that they could call on. Yes, he needs to be added to the 40 man roster but there is some dead weight they could drop to add him (Hinske and Batista). I am going to be so disappointed if this guy isn’t given a chance this year. They refused to give Mauro Gomez a chance and now they are doing the same thing to Mejia.
He could well be off, after all he has worked 6 games in a row, that could be a record for him. — ace
Actually it was seven games in a row, but who’s counting? I mean, two of them were on a weekend when you and your pal George were off (so those don’t count). Plus, since I realize neither of you would be familiar with air travel, the day before those seven included a 5-hour flight to San Francisco, and the day after those seven a 4-1/2 hour flight from San Diego. And again, since I know you and George don’t fly, you have to get to airports a little earlier since 9/11.
Oh, and I wrote an off-day story on Braves going into September — the longer version appears on this blog page — after getting home last night, since it was bit cramped in coach seats to get it written on the plane. But I’m sure my day yesterday, up at 5 a.m. in San Diego and done writing at 7 p.m. in Atlanta, was nothing to the rigorous demands of the jobs you two have, right? Anyway, enjoy the game tonight and your weekend off, fellas. Football and some brews? Some of us working stiffs have got to work Sunday.
Yes, he needs to be added to the 40 man roster but there is some dead weight they could drop to add him (Hinske and Batista).
From what I see, he can be added right now… Braves have 39 guys on the 40-man roster…. Hinske and JJ aren’t gonna be dropped, not this late in the season. That’s not the Braves way.

smalltownbravesfan — No, the Padres would laugh at that offer. Jurrjens will be DFA’d this winter. Spruill has value but not enough to get a guy like Headley. Hanson has very little value. It would take an offer like Teheran and Bethancourt to get Headley.
I sure did answer him, if the tv guys can make all the road trips and still work a large percentage of the games, why can’t DOB? — george
By the way, are you familiar at all between the difference in what the well-paid TV guys do from the end of the Braves’ last game until the following spring, as opposed to what we ink-stained wretches do? (Here’s a clue: We’re not off for two or three months.)
TheOnlyBravesFan, no, Mejia played last night. He was only off for a couple of days. I said get rid of Batista, not Jurrjens. Yeah, I know they won’t get rid of Hinske….just wishful thinking on my part. Overbay will take that final 40 man roster spot that is available. They could also put Beachy or Diaz on the 60 day DL to open up a spot for Mejia. There is absolutely no reason not to call him up.

Why do certain bloggers make a big deal about how much DOB works or is off? Truth is Carroll does a great job when she fills in for him. Both are
very good. Lighten up people.
I don’t know how you do it DOB. I worked part time radio on and off (mostly on) for about 20 years, mainly overnight or Saturday shifts. My latest stint was every other Saturday in which I worked that schedule for 7 years before I finally had enough. I considered that “having it rough”, I couldn’t imagine a schedule like yours.
Carroll and Dave: Don’t pay attention to some of the idiots who comment here. The one(s) complaining about Dave taking time off probably have no clue what a job like his involves (definitely not and 9 to 5 job), especially when you include coast to coast travel. You very well may be responding to someone still in high school who can’t even relate to your responses/explanations since they have such limited life/work experiences.
DOB if you didn’t spend your off days scanning the blog for slights against your work ethic, maybe it wouldn’t seem like you were working all the time. You have a day off, turn off the computer and go do something.
Well, that would certainly get him, all right. No bleep.
I’d keep him if I were the Padres. They need pitching, for sure, but it’s a good environment to develop pitching and I like their offensive core of Headley, Quentin, Maybin, Alonso, Grandal. Real solid 2nd base prospect in Jedd Gyorko coming up too.
I’ll tell you how DOB does it. He is a multi-tasking genius with a snarly attitude that can raise its head as needed to squash the blog brethren who venture into spewing untruths and opinions that have no basis in fact. You can’t hide talent!
If I may change the subject. I think the Braves will a big September. I think Simmons coming off the DL in a couple weeks is just the late season spark the Braves need to propel them into and through the playoffs.
a blog about phillies series instead of one about greinke, a pitcher who will not even be attempted to be signed by braves? what is this world coming too..
I’m not suggesting anything but Freddie used to play 3rd Base. Maybe his range would increase if he didn’t have to worry about holding runners on first. I just don’t assume that Freddie is set in stone at first just because he seems to be at times.
Nothing I am hearing from friends who go to a lot of Mis’sippi games is all that positive about Cunnungham, and they are pretty knowledgeable; they say B Jones-type back up at best, so I ain’t counting on him till I see him play in the majors and do well
Freddie played 5 games at 3rd base as a 17 year old in Rookie ball. In 14 chances, he made 3 errors and has not played there again. Let’s leave him at 1st
Hello everyone! That’s what Iwas was concerned about. The hitting, and hope Sheets get’s healthy, so we don’t have to see Hanson. Phillies are Pesky, Rockies are playing better, Nats, Brewers, Mets are not going down with out a fight, and we have the Pirates. Not good…..

Eric (Atlanta): Hey Ben – can you tell me anything about Danville prospects SS Jose Peraza and RHP Mauricio Cabrera?
Ben Badler(Baseball America): Big fan of both. Peraza has great plate coverage and speed at a premium position, Cabrera is running his fastball up to the mid-90s and generating some buzz around the Appy League. Braves did a nice job getting those two guys out of Latin America in the same signing class.
Finally a spec of a report on either of the two. Can’t wait to see how they fare in full season ball next year at Rome.
but 3.80 is what he gives up and what his team has had to beat to win
Mainly because of his defense… he had the 25th ranked defense when he was in Milwaukee, and he managed to put up a 3.44 ERA. At the time of the trade, his ERA was better than that of any Braves starter. Imagine how good his ERA would have been if he was a Brave. Probably around 3.00 or below.
Now, his first couple starts with the Angels are all on him. He was awful early…. but again, the Angels defense is nowhere near as good as the Braves defense is.
Greinke is a good pitcher. Defenses help their pitchers be successful. Greinke didn’t have that in Milwaukee and still put up respectable numbers. He’s better than his ERA.
but 3.80 is what he gives up and what his team has had to beat to win
But peripherals count for something, right? I mean, do you really think Zack Greinke and Joe Saunders are equals as pitchers? Please don’t say yes based on ERA. For the love of god, please don;t say that as my brain will surely ooze from my ear.

We win two of three. Minor finally has a bad game. Hudson stays strong. Maholm has a good outing and finally wins without giving up a HR.

Props, sir.

It’s early, but Matt Harvey certainly has the look of a top of the rotation type starter. Mets have something with him, Dickey, Niese and Zack Wheeler

If I may change the subject. I think the Braves will a big September. I think Simmons coming off the DL in a couple weeks is just the late season spark the Braves need to propel them into and through the playoffs.

But peripherals count for something, right? I mean, do you really think Zack Greinke and Joe Saunders are equals as pitchers? Please don’t say yes based on ERA. For the love of god, please don;t say that as my brain will surely ooze from my ear.
Thanks,
