In case you hadn’t heard, this is what Buster wrote in his blog yesterday re: Kimbrel and Cy Young:
Today, my own unofficial NL Cy Young ballot would be: 1. Johnny Cueto, who is 17-6 after his latest victory. 2. Craig Kimbrel. 3. Aroldis Chapman.

Not sure I like the chances of the offense getting hot this weekend against those pitchers Philly is running out there. Hope I’m wrong.
That’s a good point. Lee has been a tough luck pitcher this season. He’s due.

Maholm will stick with Atlanta or we basically just gave up Vizcaino for Reed Johnson.
Johnson is a FA this year. No guarantee that he’ll be back, even though he looks like a perfect fit for the Braves. Me, I’d overpay the guy to keep him.

The odds of Hanson having more bad outings are not in his favor. The writing is on the wall for the big goofy redhead… his season is done.
If Fredi keeps running him out there, that’s on Fredi. There are several options in the system who could take Hanson’s starts. Both Delgado and Teheran are better options, despite their struggles in AAA. They at least have the stuff to win, where Hanson does not.
Hell, at this point I’d rather see 3 from Martinez to start followed by 3 from Avilan than another Hanson start. Screw his ego, get to the freakin’ playoffs.

Randall walked the park after being sent back to AAA, and that has to make the Braves at least a little leery.

We can’t make a 4-man rotation work for Sept? I mean, there’s no point to letting Hanson pitch 4 innings before we take him out. He hasn’t been effective past the 4th lately. Surely one of the AAA starters can do better than this.
.302/.376/.521/.897 (11 starts)
Oppo. batting avg. against Tommy since June 20…. he’s been horrible since May 1, with batters hitting .283/.359/.477/.836 against him (20 starts since May 1)
This is worse than Minor…geez. And he’s not that young to blame it on it being his 1st year in the bigs and call it growing pains. This is Tommy’s 4th season.

DOB, thx for the Medlen story. It makes it even clear how stupid Fredi G is for not starting him earlier in the season. If the Braves are lucky enough to go to the WC 1 game playoff, they will lose it if Medlen does not pitch. The we can lament that if Fredi had just used Meds as a starter earlier, we could have won the division and avoided theWC showdown.

I’m usually good with that for a game or two after a demotion (I don’t think most folks get how crushing that is; the guy who can take it in stride with no problems is the exception, not the rule). But you got to buck up at some point and stop weeping in your grits. So, I don’t know if one can lay the command problems all at the door of despair.

Be real interesting to see Frank Wren’s move this offseason with Hanson if he fails again next week and doesn’t appear again aside from mop up duty in the Braves rotation. He’ll make 3.5-4 million through arbitration in 2013, and maybe he does just decide to sell low on him.

If the Braves were to stay on this rotation throughout September:
-Hanson would pitch the second game against Washington.
-He would also get the first game in Philly.
-Medlen, Hanson, and Minor would get the final series in Pittsburgh.
-Hudson would be in line for the 1 game playoff.
Now counting today, there are 4 off days so Fredi has plenty of opportunities to mix it up if he wants to.

If someone will take him, do it. I don’t care if it’s for a 27 yr. old journeyman OF at AA. Clear that 4mil for us to get an OF or SP. Hanson has no room in the rotation next year, esp. pitching as he has and will be too costly for the ‘pen.

Sleeper: A year ago, Andrelton Simmons established his prospect credentials with an excellent season the Carolina League. Fellow Braves shortstop Nick Ahmed didn’t match Simmons’ Carolina League production, but he did show plenty of potential at the plate and on the basepaths to go with solid defense at shortstop. He doesn’t have Simmons’ range, but he does have the chance to develop into a solid big league shortstop.

With five weeks left in the season, general managers are scouting the top starting pitchers who will lead this offseason’s free agent class. That includes the Los Angeles Angels’ Zack Greinke, St. Louis Cardinals’ Kyle Lohse, Washington Nationals’ Edwin Jackson, and Texas Rangers’ Ryan Dempster.
They’re also evaluating starting pitchers who could be available in a trade this winter like the Seattle Mariners’ Jason Vargas or Chicago Cubs’ Matt Garza. And they are studying other team’s farm systems in case they can trade for a top starting pitching prospect like the Atlanta Braves’ Julio Teheran while identifying pitchers in their own farm system who might be ready to make the jump to the big leagues in 2013. – Jim Bowden
I’d bet Frank Wren is going to get a lot of calls over the winter for Teheran. I hope he holds strong and keeps him. Still a ton of potential and still incredibly young.

If Marcus Giles could be taught to play 2B, Salcedo can be taught to play 3B. Seriously, you cannot imagine how bad a glove Giles once was, in the minors.
Fielding is about technique, and technique is about reps. Salcedo certainly has the athleticism, but I don’t believe he had the amateur competition to develop proper IF instincts. That means he has to learn a lot of stuff, and then turn that knowledge into instinctive behavior. That takes a while.

I thinnk a lot of that has to do with the fact he knows he’s lost velocity, so to compensate he tries to overthrow a lot of pitches.
