It’s a little over the top, but for Monty to say Medlen had more upside and he knew it is… ha.
Hanson’s problem was and is this hitch in is delivery. It robbed him of his mid 90s fastball, hurt his shoulder and has him dart tossing instead of pitching now. This season was about adjusting to life after a mid-90s fastball. The first half of the season, Hanson was pretty gritty. Not efficient and not going deep into game, but he was pitching ok and winning.
Will we see the pre-injury Hanson again? Maybe. Probably not. That’s a shame really. Should the Braves have altered his delivery before bringing him up? He is 6′ 6″ and 220 pounds. Should not be an arm pitcher, which he was and which junked the shoulder.
I’m still skeptical on a lot of pitchers/hitters. Still excited on the potential of the player, but one full season of 200 innings and a sub-3.50 ERA will make me feel a lot better about Kris. Hopefully 2013 will be that year. He better get that chance….
Freeman right at .276/.345/.455, 116 OPS+ for his age 21 and 22 year old seasons. Exciting to see what he becomes along side of Heyward hitting 3/4 in the lineup. If they both improve their hitting LHP, we’ve seriously got something….
Good numbers for Meds, Efrim… just needs 8 more starts for a full season. Might get those 8 if we can get to the NLCS… then we’ll see how good 1 yr of Medlen is.
Murph – Not to mention that at AAA, Medlen gave up 7 ER in 13 IP.
Meds is at 108 IP for the year (ATL. and Gwinnett combined). He has never pitched more than 120 innings professionally – not minors or majors. It should be interesting to see if he can continue the dominanace now that he’s approaching the most innings he’s ever pitched.
We’d like to see this trend continue – both the rest of this year and through 2-13 and beyond. However, far cry [itching 120 innings or less and going over 200 as someone that good would be expected to.
I think those Phillies are going to be a lot more dangerous next year. But there is just no way around the age on that team. And Dom Brown isn’t the answer as an injection of youth as an everyday player.

Pretty much all I’d point out as well. Heck, Brandon Beachy hasn’t thrown more than 150+ in his short career and he’ll be on a 160-180 count in 2014 if they do the same thing for him as they are doing for Medlen.
Hanson’s problem was and is this hitch in is delivery. It robbed him of his mid 90s fastball, hurt his shoulder and has him dart tossing instead of pitching now…..Should not be an arm pitcher, which he was and which junked the shoulder.
Which is why Medlen is the better pitcher…. smoother mechanics, and he does use his legs/hips. Those issues right there is why I can’t see many teams trading for Hanson…. that also means that FW is not likely to trade him because there won’t be many fair offers or Hanson will be non-tendered due to lack of roster space.
However. Meds is over the magic 25 years old that proponents of the Vwerducci Effect site as being when increases to IP should be kept at a minimum, so maybe Meds could be throwing 200IP as early as next year. Doubt he would get there this year even pitching throughout a WS run.
I don’t who Kris Medlen is, is he an unpredicted ace type of pitcher or a fluke or somewhere in between? All I really know is he is fun to watch so far. Let’s enjoy the ride!
TOBF, they are not non-tendering Tommy Hanson. Good lord, man. Even at 88-90mph, he’s still at least a solid #3/#4 starter for most all teams. BMac doesn’t need to be blocking the plate like Molina did any time soon, don’t want to see him get hit like that…
Efrim and others…. Why would any team trade for Hanson? Good Lord, he’s been bad… worse than a #5. Not quite JJ-like but getting there. The man’s damaged goods. He’s been pretty horrible since June. I can’t see any team trading for him and giving up a decent prospect/MLB player…. and esp. not in a deal that FW would like.
Yeah, we can trade Hanson for some A+ prospect who’s 25 and likely to never get to the Bigs… sure. Don’t think (and nor should he) that Frank Wren would accept that trade.
Philly fans do seam to have quite an attitude (I mean, who else would boo Santa?)…you know, the one we Southerners particularly hate? (I won’t use the “Y” word). Seems worse than NY and others.
Many of us Hurrucane fans have quit going to Buffaloe Sabers games. I can’t sell my tickets, or even give them away, their fans are so bad. They get drunk, pick fights, even vandalize cars ing the parking lot. Hurricanes hire extra security, and hand out instructions on crowd conduct just in those games. Philly, Pittsburg, and Boston fans are bad, but NOTHING compared to Sabers.
McFann… I liked Harrison’s reaction to getting hit, knew it was coming and took it like a man and afterwards admitted that he didn’t have a problem with it because he took out one of their best players. Not sure why the Pirates bench acted like a bunch of school girls after he got hit. I didn’t think anything was wrong with what went down. It’s not like the Cards threw at his head!
Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook hit [Josh] Harrison with a pitch later in the game.
Haha! Good for him…”
Yeh, I watched that whole thing develop yesterday. The Cardinals’ announcers wouldn’t stop whining about their pitcher hitting Harrison. Then once the game got to 5-0, he nailed the guy.
I’m ok with pitchers hitting guys, but the play at the plate wasn’t malicious at all. If you block the plate, you will get run over. Not sure a guy should get hit for playing baseball.
Philly has been historically a tough town since the vaudeville circuit.not gonna chance.
I liked the quote about Ben Franklin inventing sarcasm with the Brotherly Love sobriquet
Hanson won’t be non-tendered. The rest of you, though… well, you might not want to get too comfortable. Guys like Ward and Veer are just getting to expensive to keep.
Why does it seem like fans are unhappy that Medlen is pitching well or that Uggla hit a homerun? It’s almost as if they’d rather say “I told you he so!” than see the Braves do well.
Brian – The way it stands now, the rotation will be Hudson, Hanson, Mahom, Medlen and Minor. If not traded, I just don’;t see Hanson supplanted in the rotation by either Teheran or Delgado – I’d be more willing to believe that JT or RD are traded if Hanson is not or that one of them will be and the other enters Atlanta’s bul to start 2013.
Is there any real reason for us to assume that Hey and/or Freddie will get all that much better against lefties. lots of players never do……
I think both of them hit em in the minors. Possible that they don’t, but at 23, I’m hoping they’ll get better at facing them. They don’t have to kill em – just not make it so bad that they are like Howard or Ethier.
I don’t really see anybody unhappy about Meds, but I see some who seem more happy about ripping folks who thought he was more valuable in the pen, than the fact that it helps the Braves so much
“Why does it seem like fans are unhappy that Medlen is pitching well or that Uggla hit a homerun?”
It goes against their beliefs. Some believe Uggla sucks and should be traded. While others believe that Medlen is a #4 and since he is a number 4, he can never pitch like a #1 or #2.
I think any one of Hanson, Teheran, Delgado, and Minor could be trade candidates. Some more likely than others. The most likely rotation members are Hudson, Maholm, and Medlen, I think. Lot of stuff to shake out, and too much can happen. I have a hard enough time thinking about the rest of this season…too early for 2013.
That’s cool. And I liked how he was clapping when Molina got up. I really shouldn’t have commenting on their hitting Harrison before I watched the play—because now after watching it, I see it wasn’t a horribly dirty play like Erstad (but that’s not to say I wouldn’t want our guys to hit a guy if he took BMac out like that…wanted the Reaper plunked for quite a while…)
No, haven’t seen the one from earlier in his career, but the article said it was eight years ago to the day, and also at PNC. That’s freaky…
“I think both of them hit em in the minors. Possible that they don’t, but at 23, I’m hoping they’ll get better at facing them.”
Hope so. Not everyone can be Chipper and have the exact same splits vs lefties and righties for a career. Those are crazy numbers, especially hitting from opposite sides of the plate with two different swings.
But wow, those splits for Heyward and Freeman L vs R are pretty drastic. Two completely different players depending on who is pitching.
Catchers standing in the middle of baseline leave themselves open for what happened to Molina. The only other alternative is a rule that doesn’t allow a catcher to do that. Really not sure MLB would ever go that direction.
No one would expect Heyward and Freeman to hit lefties equally as well as righties. But floating a .750-.780 OPS against lefties would make them truly elite hitters.
The only other alternative is a rule that doesn’t allow a catcher to do that. Really not sure MLB would ever go that direction.
Don’t the rules already state that a defensive player can’t be in the path of the runner without the baseball, or it’s interference? Home plate is the only place where this is allowed.
I don’t see Minor being trade bait. Not after how he’s pitched the past couple of months. Kind of stupid to refuse to trade him last year and ditch him now that he’s starting to pitch like they thought he would.
“Home plate is the only place where this is allowed.”
I’ve always wondered why guys don’t just run over the SS covering 2nd. Just run straight through the guy to knock the ball out of his glove. Would be great viewing.
I don’t see Minor being trade bait. Not after how he’s pitched the past couple of months. Kind of stupid to refuse to trade him last year and ditch him now that he’s starting to pitch like they thought he would.
What if he was used in a package to acquire a 40-HR hitting left-fielder? I don’t have anything in particular in mind, I’m just saying…almost nobody can be ruled out as trade bait.
TOBF – I’m with you more often than not, but your Hansonlogic eludes me.
He currently has value as at least a #3 or #4, to us, or someone else. If we don’t need him, he has some trade value, probably a lot more more than you think. Even if you are right, how is non-tendering him better for the Braves than trading him for WHATEVER we can get for him?
He may improve, with work and coaching. Hard to see him having no value, unless a major, MAJOR new injury.
They discussed it on MLB Tonight last night. Harrison recalled a play last season against the Astros when he tried to slide around the catcher at home and ended up getting a shoulder to the face. He was bloodied and hurt because of it. He said he remembered that play as he was rounding 3rd so going in hard was his best bet.
Cardinal fans are whiners. It was a clean play. No malicios intent whatsoever.
Not that anyone cares, but just to show which side of the Meldeeeen fence I stand on …
I share scoots’s concern regarding Medlen’s durability and up-side. Many other pitchers have had a good run, even for as much as a year, before falling back to earth.
When Medlen’s done it, you can say, “he’s done it.” (Pitch 200 innings, maintained a 2.00 ERA)
HOWEVER, Medlen’s done enough to deserve a chance to show whether he can do it for a full season or not. I was definitely upset when Jurrjens got his final shot before Medlen got his.
I understand the innings pitched limit thing. However, it seemed the Braves were going to pass Kris over this year and that was pretty unfair.
Still excited on the potential of the player, but one full season of 200 innings and a sub-3.50 ERA will make me feel a lot better about Kris. Hopefully 2013 will be that year. He better get that chance….
You must put Meds potential way up there. I love Medlen. I think he’ll be a fine addition to this team. I just don’t expect him to pitch below 3.50. My expectations for him, over a full season, are 6+ innings a start, and around a league average ERA… Personal bias hopes for better than league average ERA, but I’d be very pleased with just a 100 ERA+ and an 6+ IP per start out of him. That’s be huge for this rotation. The Braves have been teetering on the wrong side of 6IP per start for a while and spending way to much on the “proven innings eater” in Free Agency.
Brian – There are really only three outfielders in all of MLB with a chance of hitting 40 HR’s this year.
Josh Hamilton is a Free Agent so you wouldn’t need to trade Minor for him. Curtis Granderson is not going to BE traded by the Yankees. Ryan Braun is going to be traded by the Brewers. Giancoarlo Santon is not going to be traded by the Marlins (for anything short of a King’s, Queen’s, Prince’s and Princesses’s ransom (which we don’t really have and Miami is a division riva).
Even if you are right, how is non-tendering him better for the Braves than trading him for WHATEVER we can get for him?
True, anything is better than nothing. If it comes down to that, maybe FW will make that trade. I just can’t see him taking a prospect that’s not very good (like “Salary Relief”) for Hanson… no matter if we need the rotation spot. He’ll find a spot on this team for him.
“The Braves have been teetering on the wrong side of 6IP per start for a while and spending way to much on the “proven innings eater” in Free Agency.”
Yep. And the funny thing is, was Medlen was limited to like a 80 pitch limit in some of his starts and still was going 6 innings. The guy has been phenomenal.
A few people are untradable. (Hudson for example…sorry AT) Other than that, every player has a value, both to the Braves, and to the team wishing to acquire him. This includes not only his ability and potential, cost, years under control, and even popularity with the fans and value in the clubhouse, as well as marketing and team image, etc.
A GM must determine that value, and compare it to the total value of potential trade target to the team. Generally, you should make a trade if, and only if it improves the team overall. You could say, however, that everyone has a price, and could be traded. For some, that would take one hell of a deal.
Not sure why the Pirates bench acted like a bunch of school girls after he got hit. I didn’t think anything was wrong with what went down. It’s not like the Cards threw at his head!
Crazy, Best I could tell, the Pirates were upset about receiving a warning over it. Can’t say that I blame them. Both teams were handling it well. There never seemed to be a threat of a brawl or anything. Let them police it themselves if they aren’t acting like idiots about it.

I think both of them hit em in the minors. Possible that they don’t, but at 23, I’m hoping they’ll get better at facing them. They don’t have to kill em – just not make it so bad that they are like Howard or Ethier.

It goes against their beliefs. Some believe Uggla sucks and should be traded. While others believe that Medlen is a #4 and since he is a number 4, he can never pitch like a #1 or #2.
