You and Chop are viewing a Stolen Base the same way as a homer. Like every steal is a meaningful play…

Factor in all the times a player caught stealing, factor in all the times the guy who stole the base is stranded, then factor all the times the batter gets a hit or walks after a runner is thrown out. Overall at the end of the day it doesn’t make that much impact over the course of the season.

All you guys with a man crush on Michael Bourn should check his batting average and OBP since the All Star game. Less than impressive! He also strikes out way too much for a lead off man. Do you really want to sign this guy to a long term contract at $15 million plus for six or seven years? Check his career stats. Not a supestar! Braves don’t need another Uggla/Lowe type of contract on the books which steals needed money from the bench and the bullpen. There are cheaper alternatives out there. Let Bourn go to the money. McCann will follow him the year after.

Hmmmm

August 26th, 2012

“It sure seems like Bourn either goes 4-5 or 0-5, doesn’t it?”

I wish it seemed like he was going 4-5 a lot ….. I just looked up Bourn’s stats; since Jul 4 he’s had 10 games where he got more than 1 hit (Braves are 9-1 in those games). Only 10 games in almost 2 months where he’s had a multi-hit game

In my opinion the most recent labor-management agreement has resulted in huge shifts in player-salary strategies. If you have a lot of money (i.e., are a big market team, you throw “insane money” at a dwindling supply of so-called superior talent. But the union put the brakes on the money you can pay to amatuers and international players. The end result is in finding value with the ‘journeyman’ player who have good resumes. BMAC will attract the high-rollers, and, the Braves would be foolish (relatively speaking) to take the same risk that a Boston, LAD, LAA, NYY, NYM, or either Chicago team. Brian will have surgery during the off-season and may return to his historic levels, but can the Braves afford to pay the inflated “market” value that even an injured McCann would command? The answer is maybe. Declining the option will be fatal. Why? Because in that eventuality, he is, hate the term, publicly “dissed”. The big spenders will not hesitate to tell him and his agent that his off-year is a non-factor. For our Bravos, it will be about money and statistics, but others will readily over-pay him. (Think Boston, who has some $260 million more than they had 6 months ago. Want me to say it again, that is $260 million – off their books – money that they can’t throw at the latest HS or college phenoms, and money that they can’t pay to Dominicans, Arubans, Mexicans, etc.

I understand that I am willing to let one of the last so-called (hate the term) ‘baby Braves’ go. But we survived FanCoer’s leaving’, and nothing in Andrew Jones’ post-Braves career ever came close to justifying a 2-year $36M contract. With due respect (absolutely – hey, I am a 66 year old guy, whose has followed this team daily sincc 1954))to Ms McFann- good business demands that the Braves decline a $12M option on an injured player.
