Heyward (.393, 4 HR, 8 RBI, .821 SLG) was an NL player of week finalist, but Miami’s Stanton (.287, 5 HR, 8 RBI, .857 SLG) got it – DOB
I’ll take .393 over .287 any day of the week. JHey should have taken the honors and it should not have even been close.

Reminds me of a show that was on not long ago, might still be on IDK, where a camera crew followed these bigfoot hunters around in the woods at night.
What was funny is how serious they were about their jobs. Who knows, maybe there is something out there, but doubtful.

While I don’t have video as proof, I can confirm Wood didn’t hop a single time in his outing in Savannah. If they addressed this over the past few weeks, this is great news for Wood’s mechanics. I felt the hop prevented Wood from finishing his motion, essentially cutting himself short. But when I saw him, he had a much smoother finish than during his time at Georgia. This should help his command.
NO!!!! I liked that hop, it looked so cool.

MFin04, point is the fact that managers have mostly used him as a leadoff hitter doesn’t mean he’s any more valuable, except for the fact that a player can accrue more value by getting more plate appearances. If Albert Pujols were to hit leadoff instead of 3rd or 4th, that wouldn’t add much value except that it would allow him to come to the plate more often and perhaps his team would have a greater chance of leading off the first inning with a baserunner and with a runner in scoring position or with a run on the scoreboard.
Position in the batting order shouldn’t matter and doesn’t matter that much in player value. The player is more or less going to have the same value no matter where the manager hits him.

I could be wrong, but the Braves have almost gone out of their way in the past to NOT show interest in Willingham, and I don’t expect that to change this offseason. I don’t know whose dog he ran over, but the only player the Braves have tried harder to avoid was Adam Dunn.

If a team is paying a player extra because of where he can hit in the batting order, they’re doing it wrong. You pay a player based on his offensive and defensive value.
If the Braves do end up losing Bourn and they are primarily looking for a leadoff hitter to replace him, instead of the best possible centerfielder that fits into their budget and/or doesn’t ruin the franchise’s future, they will be doing it wrong.
You get the best possible players. The order in which you bat them should barely be a consideration.

RHP Zeke Spruill has given up 34 home runs in 577 minor league innings. Thought that was interesting.
That is interesting. And I happened to be in attendance for two of them which came in the same inning. Here’s the second one…a grand slam off the bat of Mikie Mahtook. I was in the first row about 10 seats down from the 3rd base dugout.

Sure he does. We certainly have had our fair share of guys struggling hitting leadoff. Not to mention coupling that with the speed which gets pitchers rattled.
Anyone who thinks this way, should check out what the Braves’ offense did in those years between losing Furcal and gaining Bourn, the years without the prototypical leadoff hitter.
Actually, don’t bother. I got this. From 2006-2010 the Braves were 3rd in the NL in runs scored, behind only Philadelphia and Colorado. Add in 2011 (since Bourn came towards the end of the season and frankly he wasn’t that good after he came to the Braves last year) and the Braves drop to 4th, behind Philadelphia, Colorado and Milwaukee.

the reason I said great utility player is because he is a true shortstop who plays great defense. He can probably learn to hit .250. He will never be an Infante and I don’t think many here or in MLB consider Prado a utility guy so that is not a good comparison.
Janish also has shown quite a bit on the mental side too. Came in via a trade and thrown into a pennant race with a ton of pressure. For all the doomsday predictions that occurred when Simmons went down, I think we have all been pleasantly surprised with Janish’s contribution

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, Dexter Fowler is now represented by Casey Close of Excel Sports Management.
Fowler was previously represented by Scott Boras, but he feels like Close is a better makes more sense for him at this point in his career. The 26-year-old was arbitration-eligible for the first time last winter as a Super Two player, so he remains under team control though 2015. The Rockies expect him to be more receptive to the idea of a long-term extension now that he’s not represented by Boras.
Heyward moved to Excel Sports Management and Casey Close last year as well. Hoping he sticks with him and stays away from Scott.

“Position in the batting order shouldn’t matter and doesn’t matter that much in player value.”
Sure it should, at least to some extent. Being able to get on base and wreak havoc on the basepaths in front of hitters has some value. If pitchers have to throw over a lot and are distracted from the guy at the plate, that does have value.
Now it may not have quantifiable value, but there is value there.

brian, Janish could probably handle any infield position just fine. But you probably wouldn’t want him playing more than a handful of games anywhere but shortstop with his bat. So I don’t think he would technically be a good utility guy. But I guess that would depend on your definition of “utility guy.”
Also, I don’t think anyone should have been all that worried when Simmons went down, especially after they traded for Janish. Before we fall too in love with Janish, he does have a 47 OPS+ with the Braves, which is fine. He’s here for his glove.

I’m out for the day, but just so everyone knows MLB.com is running a special that ends tonight at midnight on MLB.TV for the rest of the year for only $10. I’ve never purchased MLB.TV in the past because it costs so much, but $10 for a little over a month of rooting for whoever is playing the Nationals sounds good to me. Not to mention that with the Braves starting at 10 tonight I’ve got a few hours to kill beforehand….

Janish, with a 47 OPS+, has a WAR of 0.4, per Baseball Reference. That’s pretty good that he’s hit that poorly but he’s still added some value over replacement level.

agree Shaun – I do not think he is a starter. He can fill in a game at 2B and probably could learn CF as well. But no, his bat would not fit in anywhere for any length of time except at SS.
I think it did take Infante a little time to learn to hit and he had a few rough years with the average as well.
Shaun
August 27th, 2012
5:27 pm
Janish right now is only a year older than Infante. Janish has a career OPS+ of 57. Infante’s career OPS+ is 92.
Infante didn’t really become a player that you could plug in to an everyday role until 2008, his first year with the Braves. But he’s had a pretty standard career path. And he was never nearly as bad as Janish, offensively. But Janish is clearly the better glove, which has kept him in or near a big league clubhouse for the last 5 years.
