Braves quotes after Saturday’s win against Giants

**FREDI GONZALEZ

On Mike Minor

“He minimizes the damage, gets out of the inning with one run. He was outstanding. He was so good that I’m sitting in the dugout thinking about letting him face Peguero. That’s how good and dominant he was. Obviously we didn’t, but for me he was that good.”

If Bourn catches that ball, Minor….

“He gets out of the inning with no runs.”

On Minor, Heyward

“He [Minor] helped himself offensively. Got on base, scored two runs. He was good. And Heyward, big three-run homer, here against a tough left-hander. You don’t hit the ball out of here that easily. He hit it, and we were able to add on runs after they got the two runs in the seventh, then we got one run in the ninth on a hell of an at-bat by Johnson.”

“We talk about hitting being contagious and keeping the line moving, and we did that today.”

On patience shown with two bases-loaded walks in 8th

“And Yonny [Janish] with the big hit. He’s got a knack for the dramatic a little bit. And then Prado, another bases-loaded walk [after Bourn].”

More on Minor’s performance

“I’m pleased with the way Minor pitched today. Better than pleased. Ecstatic. And pleased with the offense. We were trying to create some runs offensively by doing some stuff on the basepaths and putting some pressure on them.”

On improvement of Minor getting out of jams like 5th inning

“Earlier [in season] that becomes a three-run homer. And today he minimized the damage and knew what he was doing and only gave up one. That’s the stuff that it’s nice to see him getting through those innings.”

Johnson played a  better left field today than Hinske did Friday?

“Those balls [Friday] went over Hinske’s head. One hit the top [of the wall] and was almost out of the ballpark. And then the other one hits the bottom of the warning track, ane he’s playing deeper than Prado would have played it. So, I mean, I’m not blaming Hinske on those balls last night. They were smoked pretty good.”

But Johnson made a nice running, leaping catch at the track…

“Yeah, he’s a good fielder. He’s a nice piece, gives you good at-bats even against right-handers.”

On Chipper

“We’ll check with him him tomorrow, maybe give him tomorrow off and play Francisco again against Lincecum. But we’ll see. We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it tomorrow.”

**MIKE MINOR

On the win

“I just feel like it’s a good one because the last few games we’ve had some losses, playing teams pretty close. But today was a big win for us, to turn it back around.”

On damage control

“There was a couple of times when I felt like, even in the seventh inning when I got taken out, I still felt good because I’ve been in that situation plenty of times. But obviously it was a better matchup to bring in Durbin. If anybody saw the pitch, he made a good pitch. We don’t even know how he got to it, but he kept it fair and drove in two runs.”

On his seven-pitch walk and double

“A lot of it, I feel like it’s probably just luck. But I did work a little bit with Walk [Greg Walker], just about approach. I’ve always been late, so today I was going to try to be early and try to drive the ball to right field. It happened that way. I’m not saying I could do that every time. And then the walk, I had to take until he threw a strike, and it kind of just worked out. He threw a ball first, then was kind of throwing balls at my feet, so it was easy to take those pitches.”

On only giving up one run in fifth after HBP and double to start inning

“I was just trying to get guys out, just limit the damage like I have the last couple of games. If they score one run, that’s OK. Just try to make a quality pitch and if I walk him, I walk him, but just try to control it.”

On how he feels this late in seasons, innings mounting

“I still feel good. My velo’s down a little this year but I still feel good. it’s not anything about being fatigued or any of that. I felt good until that last inning when I got taken out, still felt good.”

On winning

“The clubhouse vibe is a lot better. Any time you get a win, especially against a good team like this, you kind of just reverse [momentum], get it going back our way. It was a lot on their side. But we had a lot of runs today, good at-bats, good defense. Everything just kind of started clicking. So hopefully we’ll keep it going.”

**JASON HEYWARD

On hitting his fifth homer in nine games at AT&T Park

“I don’t know, the crowd always keeps you on your toes here. It’s a fun environment to play in. They’re there every night, and they’re a good team with good pitchers. You’ve got to focus every at-bat.”

On Bumgarner, who doesn’t give up much to lefties

“I’m just looking for strikes to hit. I’ve faced him since ’08 now, and he hasn’t really changed much, and he’s been successful at it. Just looking for pitches to hit, trying to stay short [with swing] and don’t miss the one you get to hit, because if you do he’s got you.”

First lefty since Votto in 2010 to homer off Bumgarner here

“Votto, that doesn’t surprise me.”

On Minor’s performance and the win

“It was good to get him the lead earlier, let him do his thing. Because that team can score runs, especially here. It was good to keep adding runs. Once again, in this ballpark they’re a very good team, tough to beat.”

Appreciated hearing Minor’s quotes. What he says is what I’ve noticed about him over the past two and half months – he’s maturing into a very effective pitcher.

Fredi – in denial about Hinske last night, no worries though, gotta protect your players.

No real comment that I saw about Chipper not available to PH w/the bases loaded. I guess I can infer from him possible not playing tomorrow that he just wasn’t able to go?

Thanks DOB – and let’s get the split tomorrow!!

Fredi MUST have been watching a different game if he honestly felt Hinske was NOT to blame for missing the balls in left field. My goodness one of those balls hung up so long Borne was almost there to catch it and did wind up getting to it first once it hit the ground. Does this guy EVER admit he is wrong or makes a less than wise decision. Just total denial or HUGE ego. Regardless we need to start a count down until the season is over and Fredi starts his unemployment.

Nice game, and a good, much-needed win. Minor is going to be another Glavin for the Braves, I do believe.

I feel strongly that the Braves would improve themselves a good bit for the stretch run if they did a couple of simple things. Put Reed Johnson in left and move Prado to second. It’s a shame to sit someone who is making millions, but Uggla just isn’t producing and shows no sign of getting out of this “slump.” Pretty simple move, but with it we take a big step up.

Almost certainly, next year we’ll need a center fielder and a third baseman too, so the move involving Johnson and Prado would pare down the issues to only a couple. Simplify!

Freddi and Jason are great ballplayers and will be very good for years to come. Keep them roaring along at .270 – .280 with 20 – 30 HR’s per year, and you have the foundation for a mighty ball team.

Oh, by the way. One huge factor for any athlete is his or her weight. Hinske and Francisco both have allowed their weights to negatively impact their play. If they both dropped 20 pounds, and maybe a few more in Hinske’s case, their production would improve. Too many biscuits!

Well today was better than Yesterday. But Fredi should still be on the hook for that dumb decision to play Hinske. In fact he needs to thank Minor for providing the offense because Uggla certainly isnt. Uggla is hitting .207 does he really need to cross the Mendoza line before he benches him. Also McCann sat out and guess what happened we won.

I hate it when the Braves win. I have nothing negative to say and I just hate that. I hate it more than I hate saying anything positive about the Braves because negative thoughts are the only thing that makes me feel good during the day. Postive thoughts just make me more more miserable than I can tell you. I just hate it when Kimbrel gets to pitch because that means the Braves are going to win and I cannot give up on the Braves for the twenty five thousenth time. And I just love giving up on the Braves. I wake up in the morning and wait all day to give up on the Braves again. I look forward to giving up on the Braves once again on Sunday. But I have to wait all night and all day to do it again. I just hate that thought

PUT THE BEST TEAM ON THE FIELD AGAINST THE BEST COMPETITION. HINSKE IN THE FIELD, PRADO AT SHORT, AND UGGLA AT SECOND, ARE NOT YOUR BEST PLAYERS FOR THOSE POSITIONS EVER…..
PASTORNICKY MAKES THE ROUTINE PLAYS AT SECOND THAT THE RADIO GUYS GO CRAZY OVER FOR UGGLA. AT THE PLATE, UGGLA IS A STUBBORN CHILD THAT CAN’T UNDERSTAND DIRECTION AND WON’T TAKE IT .
WITH UGGLA AND THE PITCHER, WE HAVE 2 ABSOLUTE NO HIT THREATS IN THE LINEUP. THAT’S HARD TO GENERATE RUNS WITH ONLY 7 BATTERS , WHEREAS THE AMERICAN LEAGUE HAS 9. PLEASE, PLEASE PUT US OUT OF OUR MISERY BY PUTTING UGGLA IN A CANVAS BAG AND DROPPING HIM INTO THE CHATAHOOCHEE. WITH A CEMENT WEIGHT OF COURSE, ALONG WITH ANY MANAGEMENT IDIOT THAT STILL SUPPORTS THE GUY.

Uggla needs to do something, he’s turning into our worst guy. Take a hint from J-Hey, who was TOO BULKED UP in 2011 to hit normally. This year he’s slimmed down and he’s raking like he always did in the minors, clearly our best player at this point with Freeman right behind him. I hope they give Heyward a nice deal soon before he’s too expensive for us. I’d hate to see him go and hate it even more when he’s crushing 450+ ft bombs off us every series.

Heyward is just getting started folks, enjoy the show from here on out. He’s won us tons of games this season.

@TeddyB, soon as Heyward have a couple of 0-4 games, the haters will be out in full force……wanting to send him down to AA.
To be honest, I hope the guy end up with the Dodgers or Yankees.
Fredi threw him under the bus last Sunday for losing two balls in the sun, yet when Uggla froze in the extra innings game against the Nats, oh, that was a tough play. I don’t think it’s a coincident that Heyward has been on a tear since last Sunday.

J-MAN

August 26th, 2012

Fredi has more baseball knoweledge in 1 of his molehairs……way to be graphic. And he may very well have more baseball knowelege than me, but thats NOT what matters. What matters is that Fredi does not have more knowelede than 99% of baseball managers and usually get out managed everytime. Seriously how do you play Hinske in LF in 1 of the most spacious ballparks and he hasnt hit squat all season and the fact he had to take out Hinske before the 5th inning was all the proof that Fredi messed up. BTW if you were on the Blog that day EVERYONE was saying it was a DUMB MOVE this was well before that game started mind you. And the blog right after that game was nothing but 100% full of peope critical. There was a reason we choked up a 10 1/2 game lead and it was from Fredi just playiing ineffective players no matter what…….A lot like he has lately with Uggla.. Who has become a headcase. I’m a Braves fan and I’m tired of losing and last year was the last straw this whole organization has just setteled for mediocrity and renamed it success. Im a realist I dont expect WS championships everyyear but when you have a 10 1/2 game lead and you blow that is unacceptable. And when you have a chance to do something about it this year you do nothing but keep playing a player that has the WORST BATTING AVERAGE in the National League and is in 2nd place in Strikeouts make us see Derek Lowe blowing games last season and Fredi just tippin his cap. Also he plays an injured McCann practically everyday especially against leftys. But I noticed you wernt here two days ago when we lost that 2nd game to the Giants I know why you wernt here because you even know Fredi F**K UP with playing Hinske. In fact the only thing that can save this team is Andrelton coming back and sparking the offense. But hey you keep drinkin the kool-aid and keep thinking that Fredi is a good manager, because your the only one that thinks that. But I’m here reguardless even though you like to hide out. Oh and BTW lamosolo using my screen name just shows how insecure you really are about Fredi.

Yea Pastornicky might have the worst infield glove I can remember. I do give Uggla credit with having a better glove than he did earlier in his career. But Uggla isnt paid for his glove he is paid to hit HRs hes paid to hit 30 HRs a year and hit better than .206. I mean he only has 4 HRs since June 10. And now recently his defense has regressed.

Let me say it here we are NOT moving Prado, the one guy who can replace Chipper, to 2nd base so he can wear down and possibly get hurt!! The Braves are trying to tread water till Simmons gets back or until Dan can break out of it…now that may not happen….but it is what they are doing. For those people who just like to bash here is the sunshine during a terrible stretch(2-6 over the past 8 games) the Braves have lost only a half game to Nats and have remained 3 1/2 ahead in the Wildcard, so it turns out to be a better week than we think. Today its Maholm and if he pitches like he has been we Split with the Giants and start feeling good about ourself. Go Braves!!!!

Fredi G is still an idiot. Every game they win in spite of him is just a testament to the players.

Exhibit A: Braves have a LHP and a RHP warming in the bull pen. Minor is pulled for a RHP, a pinch hitter is put in being a Left Handed batter that OWNES that right handed pitcher. Result, 2 run double that made Mike Minors start look pedestrian, vice what it really was. Dominate.

What should have happened is soon as the hitter was announced, go to the pen for the LHP Avilian. If they use up a 2nd Pinch hitter, with their pitchers spot up next, you just effectively used up 3/4 of their bench players. Even if they put in another pinch hitter you still would have probably had a better match up than Durbin vs Blanco.

The only Plus I will give the manager tonight is aggressive base running. The braves only managed to run themselves out of 1 inning. But due to stealing, and hit and runs they managed to stay out of the rally killing double plays.

“We talk about hitting being contagious and keeping the line moving, and we did that today.”

Uggla must have gotten a flu shot.

All joking aside, Uggla needs to be sent to the minors to play regularly and work on his swing – he is doing the Braves little good at this point. I like Uggla, but enough is enough.

Maybe it’s just me, but I dislike Fredi calling these players “a nice piece” like they are some sort of object and not people. Maybe he sees baseball as a board game. I guess that would explain his apparent lack of passion for it.

I hafta say about Uggla…. he is so easy to get on and rag on and everything else but…not one of the raggers can carry his glove and hit .150 in his stead. Let’s stop ragging on him and send instead positive vibes and perhaps watch him win a few games. Lord knows we
all want him to hit again and field again and be the guy that hits a ton again….so hows about
it guys, lay off for say….three games and give him one more chance. Okay….”we believe
in Dan Uggla…. the king of da Braves hitters!!!!

Hey folks, fredi g. is probably all the Braves can afford so get used to him and his decisions. It’s tough being a Braves fan.

@Mr DoninAcwoth – The only thing Uggla is king at is wiffing. He has not proven anything as a Brave. In my opinion, he has done nothing to try and correct his swing, batting stance, or in general, improve anything. It seems to me he wants to continue his swing for fence, uppercut, pull-hitting style (LIKE MCCANN) that will produce the same results. Did you here this McCann?

Are the Braves hitting coaches trying to tell these guys anything or are they{Uggla, McCann} not listening?

How ’bout then Philthys. Sweep the Gnats, and help us out,

One of the quotes from Kris Medlen after his last win was that he started the game ready. I hope Huddy is ready tonight, so we don’t start with a 4 run hole like last game.

GO BRAVES!!……Take advantage

Only four teams in the majors with a better record than the Braves. I’m not a big fredi fan but that’s still high cotton.
