I wonder how Lentz is doing, knowing that Jones has a .310 BA, .388 OBP, with a .516 SLG, and a .904 OPS and 13 Home Runs this season.
Probably angering him more and more, while it’s marinating in him like a steak.

Meds didn’t have an innings limit, he just clearly wasn’t viewed as a starter as the season begun. But I’m sure they didn’t just want to throw him in the rotation and get him a heavy workload just coming back.

Just because something is not “officially” announced doesn’t mean it’s not real. There may not be a set innings number the team has in mind for Medlen, but it’s unlikely that they wanted him to throw a full season with starters innings. And given that our rotation headed into Spring looked solid if not spectacular, and given Meds ability to pitch well out of the pen, it is also likely that the team was not looking at him as a starter headed into the season. They would have no reason to. Especially since he had only thrown 2.1 innings in 2011.

McCann faded last year due to injuries/fatigue God knows what else…same ole stuff this year…I admire and respect Brian and what he’s done for our Braves…but how many are confident in giving him that rich long term deal his agent is going to ask for when the time comes in 2013…especially having Betancourt coming up in the minors.
Call me a traitor to my sex, but when these guys who have done nothing but eat, sleep and breathe baseball for their whole lives thusfar….. meet a girl, become engaged, get married, then have children, that laser beam bb focus is scattered like a shotgun blast. They do not have that intense focus on the game when they are not on the field.
The older and more experienced they get, the better able they are to concentrate back on the game well enough to play well. Doesn’t happen all the time, but I think developing a full “other” life off the field contributes to a temporary decline in the game. Look what happened to Francoeur when he was here, and now BMac for the last coupla years.

I find it strange that Meds innings limit is 130, a convenient number to cover the way he was mishandled, and Strasburg’s is, reportedly, between 160 and 180. Big difference there. Is there a standard recommendation after Tommy John? Anyone know?

I think the team was “hothousing” Meds up to this point. Resting him well while getting his necessary workouts in, bring him in out of the pen to ease him back, let him be the bridge guy in a few games then bust him out onto the starters scene going into the final third of the season ——— and be y o n d.
Great confidence and mindset for the final push and playoff games.

My problem with Braves management: they make decisions based on history and investment too much instead of performance. It took at least a year and half for Martin Prado to rightfully get a regular role. Medlen came out of spring as one of the five best pitchers, but they decided to nurse Jurrgens, Delgado and Minor for half a season. These guys are pros, earn your position or let the next guy in.

Fredi said just wanted to give Heyward a rest day, facing Zito today a good one to do it. Though he noted that like with Bourn the other day, a rest day at this point of season could be just 6 innings.
If you’re wondering, Heyward is 0-for-6 with 2 K’s vs. Zito.

Just because his poise, pitching repertoire, not being a big guy, and cerebral demeanor reminds you of the great Maddux it does not mean yet that Medlen is anywhere close to the HOFer, of course.

I don’t know how many times this needs to be said but it is easily in the triple digits from the time Medlen was injured 8/4/10.
The conservative recovery time for a position player is a year and a pitcher is 12-18 months. Medlen had two setbacks, with arm and elbow soreness, before he pitched one inning in game 159 on 9/25/11 and 1.1 innings 9/28/11. 2 and 1/3 of an inning in 13 months.
It is obvious to anyone who has every thrown a baseball that you don’t go from being injured 8/4/10 until 4/1/12 and start a regular schedule of 5 – 9 innings every fifth day. Throwing a baseball at close to 100% 90 to 100 times every 5th day is a sure way to blow it out again. The Braves chose to gradually increase his work load as a reliever where they could control how much he pitched.

Interesting listening to Ray Knight during the second game of the last series..In regards to Uggla..he said that Uggla basically only tries to swing for the fence and can only hit the fast ball(rarely)..and is out on any other pitch. Fascinating look at what must be “the book” on Uggs around the league. Could this be what Jones was referring to when he said “guys need to adjust or the manager will”? Sadly, I just don’t see FG as being able to “adjust” for longer periods of time than one game.

They are going to make one helluva double play combo next season… Simmons dives to his right to get the ball in the hole, tosses from one knee to Janish who makes an acrobatic leap over the sliding runner while throwing out the runner at first.
They may not hit much, but neither does Uggla.

Money aside…I know Shaun has already stated that he thinks FG needs to have Uggs in the lineup everyday. I however, think I might actually go with someone like A Simmons or even Reed simply to have a chance to extend a rally by either a single or walk. Right now, as everyone in eyeshot of this blog knows, we have a black hole in our lineup. 7,8,9. Just replacing one of those might give us the chance to extend a rally back to the top of the order.
