In the offseason, this is what i would do

- Jurrjens would be non-tendered( i think he will come back to form, but no room for him)
- I most likely would not re-sign Ben Sheets( budget reasons)
- Hudson and Maholm would be re-signed
- Trade Hanson for a power hitter( most likely an right handed outfielder). Move prado to 3rd
- Don’t re-sign Bourn.
- Accept the option on McCann if healthy ( i dont see many other choices)
- Package Francisco for right handed bat, or trade uggla and move francisco to 3rd, prado to 2nd, and sign outfielder(no left handers)

Rotation can be

Medlen
Hudson
Maholm
Minor
Delgado

Delgado was better than minor most of the season IMO, but minor was just on a roll whenever it was decision making time. I can’t see delgado staying in AAA much longer.

cabravesfan, McCann has been injury prone the past two seasons. Dude’s batting .229 in 2012.

In 2010, he batted .269 with 21 homes and 77 RBIs.
In 2011, he batted .270 with 24 homers and 71 RBIs.
In 2012, he’s batting .229 with 18 homers and 59 RBIs.

However the prior 4 years, he batted:

In 2006, he batted .333 with 24 homers and 93 RBIs.
In 2007, he batted .270 with 18 homers and 92 RBIs.
In 2008, he batted .301 with 23 homers and 87 RBIs.
In 2009, he batted .281 with 21 homers and 94 RBIs.

Four really good years…followed by 2 ok seasons (remember, he’s our clean-up hitter…meaning that less than 80 RBIs from the clean-up spot isnt very good)….and now a pretty mediocre (at best) 2012 season. McCann’s making $11.5 mil in 2012…followed by a team option of $12 million in 2013. Too much money to pay for an injury prone catcher who bats 4th/5th in our order.

It is much easier to find another Christian Martinez or Chad Durbin than it is to find a starter that pitches even close to Medlen’s results. It’s a body of work over a few seasons now. You can’t ignore he’s probably our best starter. He and Hudson are the two pitchers I’d want pitching a short series for sure.

Long time Braves fan in San Francsico-

That doesn’t answer the question I posed. Who catches for the Braves in 2013 if not Mac? (and he’s not our clean up hitter- he’s a No. 5 hitter) But this is kind of a pointless argument. They are unlikely to not pick up his option.

Medlen should start in the one-game wild card if the Braves are in it. He simply gives the Braves their best chance to win, and you’ve GOT to win that game.

I’m afraid Sheets may be out of gas already. He seemed to win his first few on sheer adrenaline, but the lack of strikeouts was alarming. Now the velocity is gone and his last couple of starts were not good. I hope I’m wrong, but he may be the odd man out.

Don’t expect too much out of the Braves tonight. Flying cost to cost can be taxing, even on a luxurious charter.

After 3 rain delayed games in DC, and the late night flight, they’ll try just as hard as usual, but just don’t expect them to be Giant beaters tonight.

I hope that the Braves sent Hanson to San Fran long before the game even started last night.

`To win you must play strong defense, especially up the middle. Ross, Simmons, Janish, & Bourne
give this to you. It should be the combination to use in September. Keep B. Mac & Uggla on the bench. Bring in a left handed hitter from the minors to use instead of Hinske in a pinch hitting role.

Venice, you can go with the Strasburg theory on Meddog since he didn’t come back until late Sept from the operation. It worked out great for him to be in the pen so he could get innings and to help .

Paul Janish has played a total of 12 games at 2nd base, and not played them very well

(Just for comparison, especially this year, Uggla is a much better defensive 2nd baseman:

Enjoyed the article DOB. As for Uggla, so many people on here have said that you have to play him in order to for him to get into a groove. Well, he is in a groove and the wrong kind at that. It has gotten well past the point where he is gonna get anything good going during this season. He needs to be benched now for the rest of the year, so that he won’t continue to kill his team offensively. Others will say that we are in command of the wild card with him in the lineup and that is true, but that is because others have picked him up. When others slump, what we wind up with is a losing streak and the next one we might not recover from. Time to cut our losses this year and hope he can salvage his career next year.

I’m okay with Meds starting out in the BP this season, but as soon as signs of trouble with the rotation appeared, he should have been moved into it. I mean how long did the Braves suffer through horrible starts by Minor, Delgado and Jurrjens? Even barring that, he should definitely have moved into it when he came back from being stretched out.

I watched Fredi being interviewed last night and I could tell from his answers and body language that he was uncomfortable talking about how well Medlen pitched. They know they made a mistake, that’s why they came out with that cockamamie, bs story last week that they’d planned this all along.

Medlen was coming back from major injury, they obviously didn’t want to Meds to pitch a ton of innings right off the bat. Work him in as the season goes. To be honest they probably never even planned on him being a starter, but injuries and struggles from others gave him that opportunity.
