Shortstop Andrelton Simmons will remain in Atlanta during the Braves 10-game trip to Washington, San Francisco and San Diego continuing to rehab his right hand. Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said he is progressing but still hasn’t been cleared for baseball activities. Simmons is six weeks removed from breaking his fifth metacarpal in his right hand, but it’s looking more like an eight-week recovery now and possible mid-September comeback.
“We’re progressing but slowly,” Gonzalez said. “They’ve (X-rayed) it every 6-7 days and it’s healing. We want to make sure it doesn’t take a step backwards if we push him too hard. But I think you’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.”

He’s going to be good for a long time, let him heal completely. Janish is doing a fine job. If Pastor
were at short, I’d say hurry Simmons along.

Carroll… what are the rules for post-season eligibility? On the 40 and on the DL on September 1 is still OK?

Seriously, why is Simmons taking so long to recover? I broke three of my toes and it only took me a week to recover, after that week I didn’t feel a thing and to top it off I wasn’t even in a case because I couldn’t afford it! Simmons is in a cast, has doctors helping him rehab and two months are gone and he is still injured? Wtf?

He did not break his pinky as sometimes said by mistake. He broke the pinky’s bone in his hand leading up to his knuckle. Therefore, it takes a long time before he can grip a bat or ball for baseball related activities. He will heal, but much more serious than a toe break as it would compare to breaking your little toe “inside you foot”. Not a fast recovery either.

You’re serious, Oh’man?? There is a lot of difference between a hand and a toe injury. Did you play major league baseball after your one-week recovery? Please exercise some patience please, man Oh’man.

I am trying to watch the game on MLB because its the free game of the day, but it tells me blackout restriction. What does that mean? They are not in Atlanta playing, they are in Washington, so why is there still a blackout?

John in Wichita, ruled changed a couple years back, as long as you’re in a team’s organization by Sept. 1 you’re eligible. new flexibility because you can sub out for players on the DL

It looks like Simmons should be shut down for the season. If he comes back mid Sept it will take him some time to get his swing in tune for major league pitching so rather than him risking injury maybe he ought to wait until spring training. I’m afraid his bat will be no better than Yanish’s this year after the long layoff.

I broke the same bone (fifth metacarpel) as Simmons, and I was not surpised to hear he needed two months to recover. When they take your hand out of the cast, it’s all withered from atrophy, as well as stiff and swollen. You can’t make a fist or straighten it out, and it’s very weak. I think Simmons break was non-displaced, which means the bone stayed in alignment, which is a good thing.

And Freeman injured his hand on a feet-first slide. What are you suggesting Urban Redneck – no sliding and take a ball to the face? Plow into the second baseman/shortstop standing up? Fluke injury…
