Janish is a nice player to have as a reseerve in case we have ijuries to Simmons in the future.

Anyone who thinks Janish is a bad player has no appreciation for defense.

Now Pastornicky, he is not a very good player in my book, at least not to date. No power and not a good defensive player, he might be a suitable hitter in time but has a long way to go.

I see him as a AAAA player unless he makes some big improvement.

I’d rather have Jack Wilson than the Rev.

At least Uggla does take his walks, its made his season half bearable.

And he has played decent D but some of that is credit to the defensive improvement at the shortstop position. Uggla has looked better in the field when they realized that Passtornicky is not of MLB caliber.

The shortstop and second baseman affect each other.

I really do not think that Uggla has been as disgusting as some make him out to be. Dissapointing but not a total zero.

I do see Bourn playing at this level for another 3, maybe 4 yrs, but is what you get in those age 34 plus seasons that is always a red flag when you are dealing with a speed player.

Some guys do last, Lou Brock stole 118 bases in his age 35 season, so you never know.

If we can get him for 5 yrs at 75 and maybe even 80, I say go for it. If Boras gets another team to go 5 or 6 yrs at the 20 mil per yr range, we prolly have to pass. No one will like it but business is business.

And you know how Boras drags it out. Boras will drag it out to the point where the Braves will not have time to move on a secondary suitable option, so if we lose we might be triple screwed.

Whoa whoa whoa! As possibly the only person here who seems to like Pastornicky, I’m gonna disagree with ya. He’s a very good hitter, even if he is a slap-hitter. He makes contact and has speed… both things that are good to have out of a hitter. A little Reed Johnson, possibly.

I’d rather have Jack Wilson than the Rev.

I wouldn’t. Wilson’s defense isn’t all that special, and he can’t hit…. apparently all he can do with the bat is drop down some bunts.

Janish sukks, eh? Chew on this then. Janish has a .313/.371/.344/.715 line in his last 7 games, just 2 K

.268/.325/.310/.635 in his past 20, with 10 K

And while he has a .230/.310/.274/.584 line since coming over to ATL, he’s played 33 games, just 19 K. He has 11BB in that time frame. He is making contact, just at people. All you can ask is for him to make contact.

@TOBF — In time Pastornicky might be a useful offensive player, but he is not there yet at the MLB level. There is some potential for his offensive game to develop but his defense is something left to be desired.

Maybe in 2 yrs he might be there. Reed Johnson has more power though in time maybe the Rev might develop a little pop.

I was okay with Wilson in the field though Jansih and Andy are better, much better.

ChattTownBrian

Good to see Jansih getting some love around here. People are coming to his defense. He plays a very key position almost as smooth as you can and what you get out of him offensively is just a bonus. That doesn’t really matter at all. You have to understand how valuable such a great defensive SS is on your team. He’s just that.

TheOnlyBravesFan

August 19th, 2012
10:31 am

I don’t know if he’d be that valuable (he’s 30-31 after all) but it is possible, especially if he can keep swinging the lumber pretty good. I might have to keep calling for Pastornicky to get a start, that’s how Janish started hitting.

I wouldn’t want him traded though… there’s room for both him and Rev next year.

VaBravesFan

August 19th, 2012
10:37 am

With Janish there is no need for Wilson. Wilson provides zero offensive value and that makes Pastornicky more valuable for the bench. Pastor isn’t gonna kill us defensively cause he plays in the field rarely and is a ok hitter who has done well as a reserve in pinch hitting spots so far. Gotta remember Pastor is a rookie as well. He has plenty of time to improve and become a damn good utility guy like Omar Infante for example.

I’d like to see them resign Bourn but it would be an overpay to keep him. It would also most likely force us to platoon in LF or 3B with Francisco being a part of it. Even with all the available money we’ll have it seems like this team is destined to be worse next season on “paper”. Easy to say were not gonna upgrade over Chipper or Bourn, hell were not even gonna replace with equal value.

While I’m not big on spending a ton in free agency we need to spend more than we did last offseason. Only signing Jack Wilson, Chad Durbin, and Livan Hernandez for less than 3 million total was a joke. We spent the least of any team in baseball.

I think we can fill our needs by spending on 1 player and trading prospects for another. Having Prado gives Wren the option to look for a LFer or 3B. But overall this offseason will be huge for Wren. This is the most money we’ll have had to work with in quite a few years. But we gotta not overpay big for anyone and keep our current players in mind about the future.

I don’t want Bourn back in that case…. If Francisco is part of anything more than the bench, it means that we got no LF (again). It wouldn’t be fair to platoon Martin either, esp. since Juan can’t hit lefties.

Only signing Jack Wilson, Chad Durbin, and Livan Hernandez for less than 3 million total was a joke. We spent the least of any team in baseball.

Durbin’s turned out pretty good…. Wilson was a joke, but they needed someone to backup Rev. for the first 50 games. And we’re the 4th best team in baseball, 2nd best in the NL. Not too shabby.

Not fair to platoon Martin? Why is that? Will they not pay him if he platoons? Will hehave to sit on the bench if he doesn’t? Will Martin refuse to play if he can’t play a single position?

Give me a break – all Martin cares about is being in the lineup and helping the Braves win. If that requires him to play part time in LF and part time at third – or even sometimes at second, short or fitrst, he’ll do it, not complain and likely play quite well wherever they ask im to play.

And as for overpaying for Bourn – any player that will perform to the “standards” some of you have decided that we need or we’ll fade into baseball obscurity on the level of the Royals, will be overpaid – Bank on it.

Exclusive: Daily News uncovers bizarre plot by San Francisco Giants’ Melky Cabrera to use fake website and duck drug suspension

The scheme began unfolding in July as Cabrera and his representatives scrambled to explain a spike in the former Yankee’s testosterone levels.

In a bizarre attempt to avoid a 50-game drug suspension, San Francisco Giants star Melky Cabrera created a fictitious website and a nonexistent product designed to prove he inadvertently took the banned substance that caused a positive test under Major League Baseball’s drug program.

hat might have been a simple suspension has attracted further attention from federal investigators and MLB

Oooh, he got the feds involved…. jail time maybe?

The idea, apparently, was to lay a trail of digital breadcrumbs suggesting Cabrera had ordered a supplement that ended up causing the positive test, and to rely on a clause in the collectively bargained drug program that allows a player who has tested positive to attempt to prove he ingested a banned substance through no fault of his own.

Only Braves – For one simple rerason – Martin can do it and do a much more than credible job whereever they have him play. Hell – he even did a decent job at shortstop and he’d only played a handful of games there thoroughout his career.

Y’all need to face facts that Martin is a special player simply because he is able to play all of those positions, do so well and continue hitting no matter where he is playing and also turn into a pretty good defensive player at whichever position.

Utilitzing his talents and special skill set is all they would be doing.

VaBraves – Say they signed Bourn and used most of their money to do that and to lock up a couiple players like Martin. Why could they not then sign a player like Reed Johnson (not necessarily him) and played Francisco at third against RHP with Martin in LF and against LHP, Martin moves to third and the Johnson type plays LF.

What would be the problem with that if that’s how things worked out?
