The Braves optioned reliever Cory Gearrin to Triple-A Gwinnett Friday when they activated Tommy Hanson from the disabled list. The Braves will go a man down in the bullpen while they got to a six-man rotation until Aug. 29, at least for now.
It’s something the Braves felt more comfortable doing after their starters went 6 1/3 innings (Tim Hudson), seven (Paul Maholm) and nine innings (Kris Medlen) respectively.
“If something happens where we get a rain delay or we have one of those extra-inning crazy games, we could bring an extra pitcher,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “We’d have to make a roster move, but we could bring a pitcher back up.”
Gearrin has to remain in the minors for 10 days but given the way he’s pitched can expect to return in September. Gearrin has made 10 scoreless outings since his call-up July 31, over 8 2/3 innings, with one walk and nine strikeouts.
“Obviously we didn’t make any promises, because you can’t,” Gonzalez said. “But I think when we expand the rosters, his name will be up there on the list coming back to help us.”

Hanson has a lucky rabbit’s foot in one pocket and a lucky nickle in the other! While his velocity has been good (with up to a 91 mph fastball) and his command good at times, in the fifth he really started to leave pitches up in the middle of the plate and they got hit hard. He was very lucky to have Prado playing in at left field catch a sharp liner that Dodger’s pitcher Chris Capuano drilled too shallow for the runner to score, and then he got Shane Victorino to strike out.

Yeeh! Chipper booted a sharp grounder to third — not ruled an error, but could have been. It was a sharply hit ball, but Chipper could have fielded it. However, it was another pitch Hanson left up over the middle ofh the plante. Then, with the runner on second, Matt Kemp drilled a sharp liner to left that had so much top spin on it that it handcuffed Prado who made the difficult catch.
Then, before I could finish typing this, Hanson’s control finally caught up with him and and hung one to Andre Epier who put it into the left field bleachers to give the Dodgers the lead.
Frankly, it is looking like the same old Tommy Hanson. Decent enough stuff, but bad control.

Trying to type too fast — Andre Ethier!
Hanson got out of the inning. His last pitches were kept down in the zone and had better results. Hanson’s real problem is control. Too often his pitches are breaking over the middle of the plate and up and when they do, they have “hit me hard” signs tagged on them. Ethier’s blast was proof of that.

Tommy Hanson is useless, knew it was just a matter of time before he gave up a homerun in this game, its what he does best. I was just hoping it would have been a solo shot. Instead he gives up the lead. Hopefully when the Braves go back to a 5 man rotation, its him that goes to the bullpen.

Capuano’s fastball to lefthanders is just flat nasty tonight! Heyward thought he had one drilled, but it had so much movement to the right side of the plate that even though Jason timed it perfectly, it hit off the end of the bat and sawed it off. That two-run homer might haunt the Braves tonight because Capuano is looking very sharp tonight.

The Nats come back and have a big lead, all the while this putz is giving up homeruns and doubles like they are going out of style. I can’t stand Tommy Hanson, and I haven’t since he came up. To much hype and nothing to back it up. He deserves a loss here, but I hope he gets a no decision simply because I want the Braves to win. Don’t get a win for him though, he doesn’t deserve to be bailed out again. Way to go bum, you gave up another run, you happy? Go to the pen.

Thought Hanson was going to wriggle off the hook, but Victorino nailed him for the second double in the top of the seventh and scored the guy who hit the first one. Hanson is responsible for Victorino at second with two outs and so far has surrendered three earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched. Not a terrible night, but not good, and not good enough when Capuano is pitching excellently.

big Mercer Bear fan…but they have many better than Gearrin. Surprised at Cory’s success…but it’s nice I guess.

Chad Durbin does his job and retires Mark Ellis to end the top of the seventh. Should have done it a pitch earlier but did not get the call. Ross took care of the next pitch by throwing out Victorino trying to steal third. Ross is such an outstanding reserve catcher — probably has the best catchers arm in baseball right now.
Hanson gets bailed out and has his book closed with 3 earned runs over 6.2 innings. Certainly, any objective evaluation shows that he is the number six man and the most deserving candidate for the long relief role in the bullpen should the Braves go back to the five man rotation.
The one good thing Hanson did was limit the damage from his poor control. He got the game to the seventh inning and did not force Fredi to burn up the bullpen, which now that Guerrin was sent down gives the Braves one less bullpen arm.

Great at bat by David Ross, 11 pitches seen, but Capuano finally won the battle and retires the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Great piece of hitting from three players: Paul Janish and Reed Johnson put on back-to-back clinics on hitting a tough pitch the other way and then Michael Bourn hit an excellent bunt that took a great play to throw him out at first, but advanced both runners. Now the Braves have the tying runs in scoring position with just one out, and came within a faction of having the bases loaded with no one out.
But, Bourn’s bunt attempt also got Capuano out of the game and the way he was dealing, I’ll take my chances with the Dodger’s bullpen!

Thought Bellisario got a very generious strike one call with a 2-0 count, but Prado managed to score one of the runs. Johnson at third with two outs.

Heyward gets the job done with a huge two-out RBI single to right centerfield, went the other way with the pitch! Great job of hitting!

Just saw this… 1st off, Hanson pitched a decent game…. gave his team a chance to win, and they did…. 2nd, Ken, what are you doing? Playing gopher for the play by play man to the wires in some baseball movie set in the fourties? Wow, Dude, you’re pretty good….

If Johnson played LF, Prado played 2B and Uggla rode the bench we wouldn’t have that hole in the lineup that pitchers know they can work around to and get an easy out.
