Reed Johnson might have more playing time elsewhere. Not sure if we’ll be able to keep him, although it’d be great to have him back.

Well depends on the price tag. Overpaying for production is absurd. Why pay a guy $25 million to be a #1 and win when you can win just as many games with a #3 or #4 in Medlen.

The classifications of guys into 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, etc. has nothing to do with contract. Yes, if you’re a GM, you do have to consider contract. But this is a completely separate issue from where to classify a starting pitcher, in scouting terms.

And the list of #1’s is it based on their stuff/makeup/etc or is it based on their stats? It seems a lot of these lists suffer from checking out their stats.

Everything matters. And looking at the right stats and interpreting them correctly goes a long way toward giving us the information on how to classify a player. Guess what? A guy’s makeup, etc. is going to influence his stats. Outside of just the stats, age, stuff, durability and skill set matter. It’s very hard for the layperson to know anything about a guy’s makeup. That’s something the organizations can only know about and I’d venture to say it’s even hard for them. Hard to know exactly what goes on in someone’s head, even if you are fairly close.

Of course Teheran is a future ace because he THROWS HARD….alot of guys in here are so enamoured by velocity they overlook the being a “pitcher” aspect of it. The hardest anyone can throw in our current 5 or 6 as about 93MPH….but most have a very good idea how to get guys out and i am fine with that. Of course we would all like 5 guys that dominate and throw 95 but just doesnt work out that way.

Oh back to Teheran, until he commands the strike zone with “multiple” pitches he is what he is…a prospect…My gut tells me he is an underachiever for a few more years and then molds into a 3. His stuff does not impress me to the tune of a 1 or 2. Age is on his side but overvaluing your teams prospects is common place in here.

Efrim, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Braves go with Reed Johnson in some sort of platoon role in leftfield next season. If they can get a really good hitting left-handed leftfielder, I could see them hanging on to Johnson as a platoon partner/backup outfielder.

Can ANYBODY here, besides me, acknowledge that Chipper Jones isnt NEARLY as special to fans in other markets as he is to the Braves nation?

Sure. Isn’t that the case with most players? They are going to be more special to the fans in their own city?

But what does the perception of Chipper matter? All that matters is that he does things that lead to the Braves’ scoring and/or preventing runs and therefore is helping them win. I could care less about a player’s perception. If some fan doesn’t realize a player’s actual value as a ballplayer, I might debate them but I could really care less. As long as the Braves organization is properly valuing players.

Did anyone read DOB article on how well Francisco been doing? He could be the hitter we need next year? I think we should go with Fancisco, and see what he can do. Not causing any thing. Just an idea I seem to like right now.

Sure it does. Classification of guys has to impact their contract. I’m not sure how it couldn’t. Your 1’s are going to get paid the most, and 5’s the least. It is also why the Braves have to figure out how to get inexpensive #2’s/3’s, or develop young cheap 1’s and 2’s.

Braves absolutely cannot afford to pay a legit #1. Maybe a #2 but I doubt it. I don’t really have a problem with that though. If #3’s can win you games and their affordability allows you to sign a good offense and bullpen, then that sounds good to me.

“So now some on here will be satisfied if Teheran ends up as a #2 starter?”

Why the obsession with labeling pitchers a #1 or a #5 or whatever?

You know what I want? I want 6 starting pitchers in my organization that can go out every 5th day and give their team an above average chance of winning EVERY time the take the mound. Everybody has injuries. Thus the desire for 6 of them.

That’s what I want out of Teheran. I want him to be a guy that while a Brave for the 6 years he’s under control pitches well enough so the offense and defense can do their jobs.

Those obsessed with needing a true Ace are kidding themselves. For a decade the Braves had a rotation with 3 Aces in it and won 1 world series.

Is Medlen a #1 type guy? Nope. But he’s pitching like it.

Is Maholm a #1 type guy? Nope. But he’s pitching like it.

Is Huddy a #1 type guy? Not any more. But the Braves have a chance to win everytime he takes the mound.

Is Minor a #1 guy? Nope. But lately he looks like he’ll have a servicable MLB career.

Is Beachy a #1 guy? Sure seemed like it to me. But the pundits will tell you he’s not.

How about Hanson and JJ? Absolutely not.

But if JJ was simply league average this year, there would have been no need to go get Maholm.

Too many people putting too high of expectations on individuals to carry a team. Why not just put a really good 25 man roster together, play solid baseball for 162 games, make the playoffs and hope 2 pitchers and 3 hitters get hot? Seems to be a recipe for sustained success.

I couldn’t care less if Teheran ends up a #1 starter or simply 1/5 of a really good rotation.

Keith Law can kiss my backside. Which is why I couldn’t give two sh!ts less about what he has to say.

It’s called projection and evaluating players. It’s what your GM does. He doesn’t sit there and say “he gives us a chance to win” and leaves it at that.

I mean, this is insane. You folks really think it’s as simple as “gives us a chance to win”? How many jobs in the front office do you think there is? 2? It’s really not as simple as this, guys. If you want bloggers to stop commenting on stuff like this, then why are we here? My god, what else is there to talk about? Just Monday Morning Quarterback stuff? Come on. That’s lame. Anyone can review the past games results and analyze.

The front of the rotation, middle of the rotationa nd back of the rotation labels are important when evaluating talent. If you don;t like it, then that’s fine. But that’s the way it works in player development, scouting, player analysis, whether you like it or not.

No it doesn’t. Denard Span isn’t a good enough hitter to justify trading RD for him… esp. since he can’t hit on the road.

Red Sox Release Mark Prior

The Red Sox have released right-hander Mark Prior, according to Brendan McGair of the Pawtucket Times (via Twitter). The move was made in order to create space for the newly-acquired Pedro Beato.

Prior, 31, hooked on with the Red Sox in early May as he looked to attempt yet another comeback. During his time in Triple-A Pawtucket, Prior posted a 3.96 ERA with 13.7 K/9 and 8.3 BB/9 in a small sample size of 25 innings of work. The second-overall pick in 2001 was brilliant in the early portion of his career but has not pitched in the majors since 2006 thanks to a series of shoulder problems.

Mark Prior, an example of what could be the future of Tommy Hanson.

Yes. But contract doesn’t affect how a guy is classified, nor should it. I agree that as a GM you have to consider contract and what a guy is in terms of what you can and should pay him.

N8, the classifications are just the way scouts and evaluators make things easy so you don’t have to explain everything in detail. If a scout tells his organization that a certain pitcher is a #2, everyone knows what he means. He doesn’t have to go about explaining his repertoire, his durability, his make-up, etc. You may not care but this is the way the language of scouting works. In fact, this is the way most language works. It simplifies things out in the real world so people can communicate and know exactly what another person is referring to.

It matters because if numerous scouts tell a GM that some prospect is most likely a #4 instead of a #2, he might be more willing to trade him or trade for him, just to give an example. It just makes it easier. A scout doesn’t have to start explaining, “well, this pitcher’s fastball is like this, his curveball is like this, he’s durable enough and knows how to pitch enough to get him through this many innings, etc.” He can just say, “I think he’s a #4,” and the GM knows more or less what he means.

Evan Gattis will play OF in Venezuelan winter ball, and also catch about once a week to retain those skills….

Braves think Christian Bethancourt will be ready to play at some point during winter ball season, after 6-8 weeks of recovery for broken hand and then some time in Instructional League.

Entering a new school, Milam, for sixth grade in September 1946, Presley was regarded as a loner. The following year, he began bringing his guitar in on a daily basis. He played and sang during lunchtime, and was often teased as a “trashy” kid who played hillbilly music. The family was by then living in a largely African-American neighborhood.^.
