“Frank Wren should not give Bourn and Boras what they want, which will be AT LEAST five years, and 75 million. ”

If the Braves can get Bourn at that price, they’ll sign him…but he’ll get more than that.

I don’t think Hanson is going to net us elite prospects, but we’ll get decent value for the guy if they decide to trade him. Way too many teams out there with terrible starting rotations and a few of them actually want to compete in the near future – Kansas City, Baltimore, Toronto, etc.

Make the team pay the suspended player’s foregone compensation to the league. You’ll see teams get serious about self-policing real fast if they still have to pay the salary but don’t have the player.

He will be 30 before the year is out. Signing him to a 6- or 7-year contract as the blogger mentions/suggests the team would like to do is complete lunacy. Even 4 years is too long.

Efrim, could you give me some examples from April/May of 2010?

Also, are you seriously all that concerned right now and do you think we should be or do you think we are moving to the area of concern with regard to Heyward, at this point?

Heyward’s career wRC+ is 120. Since 1900 only 15 rightfielders have put up better offensive production through age 22.

(I used wRC+ from Fangraphs instead of OPS+ because it’s easier to do sorting on their site. I doubt you would get drastically different results if you used OPS+.)

I honestly don’t think the Braves’ front office is near a state of concern at this point in his career, knowing how smart front offices seem these days and how smart the Braves front office seems to be. I think they understand evaluation better than the fan base and have a better understanding that the fan base as to what batting average and RBI do and don’t tell us.

[Harper] has one of the most horrendous swings in all of baseball. That is a solid fact.

Define “horrendous swings.” Because his swing is ugly and not appealing to you that means it doesn’t and will never do the job?

You said the exact same stuff about Heyward. Exact same line, Shaun. Yet, now, we have 97

OPS+ hitter through his first two big league seasons and I fail to understand how a once-in-a-generation type talent produces such and is reasonable expectations. I’m sorry, I just can’t get there man. And I get that it’s early in his career and it was his age 20 and 21 year old seasons.

Let’s go back a generation, by the dictionary definition, 30 years. Only four players accumulated more value in the majors through age 22 than Heyward: A-Rod, Griffey, Andruw, Ripken and Pujols. Heyward is just ahead of Alomar, Stanton, Ryan Zimmerman, Elvis Andrus and Miguel Cabrera.

Now, obviously that doesn’t mean he’s destined for the Hall of Fame or anything. But there is absolutely nothing in his performance so far that indicates he’s not a once-in-a-generation-type talent.

Also, let’s be clear on the difference between talent and getting the results. Josh Hamilton was that once-in-a-generation-type talent. He didn’t start getting any sort of results, much less something approaching his talent level, until age 26.

Bryce Harper, Jason Heyward, Mike Trout, Stephen Strasburg…they are all once-in-a-generation-type talents. Will they all get the results that send them to the Hall of Fame? Well, if it was just about talent, we would say yes. But it takes more than talent. It takes health, it takes not getting in to trouble off the field, it takes all sorts of things.

It may very well come down to whether Bourn wants to take less to stay with the Braves. I think it’s pretty clear the Braves will make him a solid offer. It’s not unheard of for a Boras client to just sign where he wants, without regard to getting the absolute best deal. See Jered Weaver. But you can bet Boras will get this best deal that he can from that team.
