NEW YORK – He’s been somewhat overshadowed in the Braves offense by the resurgence of Jason Heyward, the All-Star performance of leadoff man Michael Bourn and the exploits of 40-year-old Chipper Jones, but consider for a moment just what Freddie Freeman has done this season.
Despite being slowed for several weeks, first because of vision problems and then a finger injury, Freeman has hit .281 with 27 doubles (second on the team to Martin Prado), 14 homers, an .821 OPS and a team-high 74 RBIs in 100 games.

Chipper Jones and Freddie Freeman had plenty to get excited about in Saturday's 9-3 win against the Mets, when Freeman drove in five runs in the first two innings with a double and a mammoth three-run homer. (AP photo)
Since getting healthy he has a .327 average with six homers, 37 RBIs and a .946 OPS in his past 45 games, including .362 (17-for-47) with 14 RBIs in his last 13 games before tonight’s series finale against the Mets on ESPN.
“He’s maturing and growing up as a major league right in front of our eyes,” Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said after Freeman drove in five runs in Saturday’s 9-3 win with a two-run double in the first inning and a mammoth – or “mammo” in Chipper-speak – three-run homer to straightaway center in the second.
Freeman began today tied for sixth in the NL in RBIs, and just one of the other 13 NL leaders in that category had as few or fewer at-bats as he did – Buster Posey, who had 75 RBIs in 370 at-bats. No other Brave is within 15 RBIs of Freeman.
“He’s taking the next step toward stardom,” Jones said. “I mean, he’s going to drive in 100 runs. That’s something that’s pretty big for guys in the middle of the lineup, especially young guys. Do it once and get some confidence, know that you can go out there and do it every year. Freddie’s a guy that, if he stays healthy, he can run off a few 100-RBI seasons in a row.”
Chipper should know, considering he had eight consecutive 100-RBI seasons through age 31 in 2003.
In 28 games since the All-Star break, Freeman has hit .330 (33-for-100) with 13 extra-base hits, 25 RBIs and a .957 OPS, looking more and more like he did when he won two NL Player of the Week awards in the first six weeks of the season, before his eyes dried out and he spent weeks trying to find the right medicated drops or contacts or glasses that would help him see straight.
When he finally got that situation worked out, he got hit in the hand by a Jose Reyes throw while sliding into second base, which somehow didn’t break his finger but left it throbbing and painful to grip the bat for weeks.
“I’m getting there,” Freeman said, when I asked him after last night’s game about being healthy again. “I’m still battling my finger and all that, but everything is healthy enough where I can control it now. I’m getting back where I’m able to drive balls to the middle, like I did today.”
To say he drove that ball to center field last night would be like saying sprinter Usain Bolt is a confident fella.
Freeman seriously hammered it. The estimate was 455 feet, or 10 feet shy of the Citi Field-record blast by Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton last year.
This after Freeman drove in the first two runs of the game with a double off Johan Santana in the first inning. The double came with two out on a first-pitch fastball – in other words, basically a perfect Freeman hitting situation.
By that I mean, Freeman leads the NL with 36 two-out RBIs and leads the majors with a .556 average (30-for-54) when he puts the first pitch in play, with nine doubles, three homers, 15 RBIs and an .889 slugging percentage. (Heyward is fifth in NL with a .471 average in 31 at-bats when he puts the first pitch in play.)
With runners in scoring position and two outs, Freeman’s .404 average (21-for-52) is the NL leader among hitters with at least 25 such at-bats.
“That [two-out RBIs) is my favorite,” he said. “It really hurts the other team when you get a two-out ribbie. It’s something that I take a lot of pride in, and I’ve actually done a good job this year with that.”
Chipper has been known as a clutch hitter and RBI machine throughout his career, but he and Freeman go about it altogether differently. The veteran switch-hitter studies pitchers, commits to memory thousands of pitches he’s faced and situations where he’s comes through with a big hit or failed to deliver, so he can do it again or try to avoid making the same mistake. Chipper often goes to the plate looking for a specific pitch and has the discipline to lay off other pitches until he gets that pitch.
Freeman? He’s an admitted free-swinger, a guy who’s swung at 44.7 percent of the first pitches he’s seen this season, more than anyone in the majors except Ian Desmond and Josh Hamilton. And in almost any count he’s liable to swing at pitches a bit inside or outside, high or low, fastballs or breaking balls.
It’s not an approach that works for a lot of guys, but it does for him.
Freeman is a big dude (nearly 6 feet 5 and 245 pounds) with a short, compact swing, not something you see too often.
Freeman swings at the first pitch more than almost anyone in baseball, and at a higher rate of success than anyone else this season. (AP photo)
“It’s not like he’s only looking for one pitch,” Bourn said. “He can wait back [for a breaking ball], and he can take advantage of the fastball at the same time. He’s one of those hitters that, if he’s on, he can see the ball pretty good. And right now, it looks like he’s seeing it pretty good.”
Braves pitcher Kris Medlen likes to spend time talking to the position players, getting inside their heads to see what makes them tick. It helps him to better understand hitters’ approaches. But not so much with Freeman.
“I think he’s, he’s like one of those guys that doesn’t — I haven’t talked to him about hitting – I don’t know if he has a plan,” Medlen said, smiling. “Swings at everything, he’ll lay off some nasty stuff … I don’t know. He’ll hit a ball six inches off the plate, inside and outside, and like, at his head. He just puts the barrel on the ball and it goes a long way.
“He’s a big, strong kid, so … It’s crazy to see, but when he hits well it’s awesome.”
He’s hitting well now. Has been all season when he wasn’t dealing with vision issues or the finger that was too painful to grip the bat properly or catch an Andrelton Simmons throw without cringing.
Ask the Mets about what a force he can be: Freeman is 16-for-35 (.457) with five doubles and three homers in his past nine games against the Metropolitans. He has a whopping 15 RBIs in his past seven games against them entering tonight’s series finale, including five multi-RBI games.
On Saturday he hit a couple of tape-measure shots beyond the applie that rises from an enclosure built into the center-field batter’s eye beyond the fence. Then hit hit his titanic shot past it during the game.
He was eager to see first-base coach Terry Pendleton after they got back to the dugout.
“TP tells me every day [during batting practice], ‘Game, please,’” Freeman said of the message he gets from Pendleton after hitting long homers during batting practice. “So this time I actually got to tell him I did it in the game.”
BRAVES LINEUP
• OK, let’s post this so you can read it before the first pitch. By the way, Tommy Hanson pitched well in his rehab start today for Triple-A Gwinnett, allowing three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in five scoreless innings. He threw 48 strikes in 78 pitches.
Hanson was only scheduled to make one rehab start after coming off the DL for a sore back. Now, it’s decision time.
Gonzalez said Braves officials will discuss over the next few days whether they’re going to go with a five- or six-man rotation, but reiterated that if it’s the latter, it’ll only be six starters for the remainder of the 19-games-in-19-days period they’re in now (which will be 16 in 16 days after Sunday).
• We’ll close with a sublime cut from one of the songwriting masters, the great Tom Waits. You can hear it by clicking here.

“ROMEO IS BLEEDING” by Tom Waits
Romeo is bleeding, but not so as you’d notice.
He’s over on 18th street as usual,
Lookin’ so hard against the hood of his car,
And puttin’ out a cigarette in his hand.
And for all the pachucos at the pumps
At Romero’s paint and body,
And seein’ how far they can spit,
Well it was just another night.
But now they’re huddled in the brake lights
Of a ‘58 Bel Air,
And listenin’ to how Romeo
Killed a sheriff his knife.
And they all jump when they hear the sirens,
But Romeo just laughs and says,
“All the racket in the world
Ain’t never gonna save that copper’s a**.
He’ll never see another summertime
For gunnin’ down my brother,
And leavin’ him like a dog
Beneath a car without his knife.”
And Romeo says, “Hey man gimme a cigarette,”
And they all reach for their pack,
And Frankie lights it for him
And pats him on the back,
And throws bottle at a milk truck,
And as it breaks he grabs his nu**,
And they all know they could be just like Romeo,
If they only had the guts.
But Romeo is bleeding, but nobody can tell,
And he sings along with the radio
With a bullet in his chest.
And he combs back his fenders,
And they all agree it’s clear,
That every thing is cool now that Romeo’s here.
But Romeo is bleeding,
And he winces now and then,
And he leans against the car doors
And feels the blood in his shoes.
And someone’s crying at the 5 points
At the phone booth by the store.
Romeo starts his engine,
And wipes the blood off the door.
And he broadys through the signal,
With the radio full blast,
Leavin’ the boys there hikin’ up their chinos.
And they’re all try to stand like Romeo,
With the moon cut like a sickle.
And they’re talkin’ now in Spanish about their hero.
But Romeo is bleeding
As he gives the man his ticket,
And he climbs the balcony at the movies.
He’ll die without a whimper,
Like every hero’s dream,
Like an angel with a bullet,
And Cagney on the screen.
Romeo is bleeding.
Romeo is bleeding… hey man.
Romeo is bleeding… hey man.
Romeo is bleeding… hey man.
Romeo is bleeding….

Baseball Tonight is talking about Nats saying they are gonna shut down Strasburg. Yet to be seen so we’ll see.
If a team were really going to do this and shut down their best young pitcher why wouldn’t they hold him out at the beginning of the year then start throwing him so he can throw in the playoffs.

“CTB” you forgot to add “or say something they disagree with in principle or philosophy”, then you get ridiculed, chided, chastised, mocked, belittled, and called “fool” or “idiot” by those who think they have been on here long enough to deserve that right, or think they know more, or better, than anyone else. I could list names but they know who they are, and that would be somewhat immature wouldn’t it? That’s why I don’t say anymore than I do. It’s sorta like the “LUIWEJGJKPLASWECBPEOWYRT crowd”. If you don’t agree with them, you are a bigot or something worse.

DOB — Great blog on Freeman… which brings me to ask you about Ernesto Mejia, the 1B slugger at Gwinnett which hit No. 24 today in Hanson’s good start. Mejia is 26 and seems to be getting stronger and stronger, hittingt .300+ all year. Do the Braves lose control over him at the end of the season? Obviously, Freeman has a lock on 1B so any chance he could tried at LF or 3B? Seems like he could be a good trading chip if he has no realistic future in Atlanta. What’s your take? Thanks for the great read, as always.

Please do not tell me it’s 2-0 Mets in the first inning.
If the Braves don’t win this game there might as well be no point to the rest of the season.
If they let the Nationals off the hook for losing to the Diamondbacks they should just give them the division banner.
Just take the 2010 NL Wild Card banner off the facade in left field, which shouldn’t be up there anyway, and write Nationals 2012 NL East Division Champions.
And then give it to them.
Either win this game or lose to the Mets and do that.

Yes one would expect that from a 1st round pick, but in all honesty should one be holding out that Minor will eventually be better than that?? This is an easy game to sit back and critique every thing that happens. I get ill at mental breakdowns and poor approaches. Thats one thing.
You can fuss about swinging at first pitches but when a guy is throwing a lot of strikes it would be stupid to take pitches or “work the count” as some want to say and hit in a negative count all night.
That last hit is the night summed up. A bunch of flare hits that have fallen in against us and a bunch of ropes early by us right at the Mets.

Full article
http://deadspin.com/verducci-effect
But the Verducci Effect probably doesn’t exist. Its continued popularity has little to do with the power of numbers to support rational observation and everything to do with their power to baselessly reinforce existing beliefs. The article is an example of three pervasive mistakes that the general public makes about statistics:
• Regression to the mean: When an outcome is far above or below expectation, the subsequent results tend to be closer to the average. How does a young pitcher make Verducci’s list? By having been healthy and successful enough to earn a greater workload. So by chance alone, you’d expect some members of that group to pitch worse, and you’d certainly expect to see some of them get hurt. Derek Holland’s good health allowed him to pitch 71 more innings than he ever had before. If he gets sidelined in 2012, it will have more to do with the random nature of injuries than with Rangers mismanagement.
• Confirmation bias: People tend to rely on anecdotal examples that confirm what they already think. There’s little attention paid to the pitchers who repeat their healthy seasons the year after; instead, fans fixate on the ones that get hurt. Mets fans might look at Jon Niese’s 2009 injury and point to Verducci’s warning label. They’d be ignoring the fact that no other pitcher that Verducci identified in ‘09 spent a single day on the disabled list.
• Correlation does not equal causation: Verducci is correct that some pitchers who pitch 30 innings more than their career highs tend to get hurt. However, that doesn’t mean that his rationale for why that happens is valid. After I read his article, I went to the bathroom and peed. That doesn’t mean I peed as a result of reading.
Every study I could find on the Verducci Effect suggests that it at best doesn’t exist and at worst is backwards. David Gassko’s 2006 study focused on the possibility of a decline in performance, and found an increase:

These are the kind of losses that hurt. You have a chance to gain a game against the gNats against an average pitcher. For eight innings, you make him look like an All Star. When it matters most, you fall short.
These are the telling losses moreso than the wins, folks. This lineup better get a clue. And Uggla? Still lost in the woods (his at-bats were HORRIBLE tonight!).

Bringing in Martinez was not a mistake. Stuff happens. The lineup lost this game tonight with a horrible hitting approach against a very average pitcher, not like the “superstar” we faced last Saturday against the Astros.

@Venice Jim you have a new pitcher who is brought in you have the the tie run at 3rd and the go ahead run at 2nd. Heyward should have lay off the first pitch that he saw as well as the last pitch. Too many of those Mets runs scored after Sheets had them on the ropes with 0-2 counts; or were dingers just barely past an infielder or bloops.
When at team is scoring like that, it’s hard to overcome when their pitcher is on his game.

Speaking of cheese, and sorry I can’t help, but am allergic to it, but I went to Wendy’s this afternoon for the first time in over 5 yrs. I had a coupon for free drink and fries with that new Son of Baconator(sounds profane don’t it?) That dang sandwich(it’s small) was still $3.99, but I held my tongue. What made me really mad, was that after I told them “no cheese”, I got home and there was no lettuce and tomato on it. That is SACRILEGIOUS not to put lettuce and tomato on anything with bacon in it. I called them and they said “no, we don’t put L&T on it unless requested”. I said “yeh, but if I had asked for it, you would have charged me extra even though I had the cheese left off”. She said, “yep, sure would”. Besides that, my sweet tea only lasted halfway through the burger cause it was full of ice. The fries were over-cooked and had lots of bad spots on the potatoes too. Threw a third of them away. I got the last word in though. I said, “lady, it’s been 5 yrs. since I was at a Wendy’s and it will be at least 5 more before I’m back.” That’s my rant for tonight, at least it got me off the Braves! Who brought up cheese?

RE: Heyward’s approach in the last at-bat, I think he was trying to get a base hit and not swing for the fences. Unfortunately, I did not see anyone go to Heyward to give him the heads-up on Rauch, that he was a sinker/slider pitcher. The last pitch swung at was Heyward just swinging from “below the waist”, as opposed to using his brains and looking for a pitch over the plate to drive.
He had seen that sinker earlier in the count. The last pitch broke early. Poor pitch recog at the most critical part of the game. Situational hitting is waiting a pitch out and going to the opposite field when a simple base hit will do. Heyward needs to learn situational hitting, to wait a pitch out, to go to the opposite field in a critical at-bat…
Very much like Prado did.

The wife asked me something last night that I thought was telling. She said, “does it affect the Braves when they are on national TV? Are they more nervous playing on Sunday night?’
I didn’t have an answer for her but there were some bats that sure came up “small” last night.
Chipper, swinging early in the count except for the final walk.
Uggla, looking like the Uggla without a clue with the bat we have grown to love over the past few months.
And Heyward. JHey has been playing well but good grief, his AB’s last night were pathetic.
I swear, my exact words to the wife when he came to bat in the ninth were, “games over honey. Heyward will strike out swinging. And so he did.
If Heyward gets two strikes in a game situation late, he is going to K. Seen that movie lots. Last night wasn’t a surprise.
If Heyward doesn’t strike out in the first and Chipper doesn’t hit into the DP with the first two men in the inning on base, could have been a different game.
Glad to see Freeman punishing the ball.
Sheets was bound to come back to earth sometime. Hope last night was just a stinker that everyone has to throw during a season. The Braves need him to be “real” if they are going to contend.
Today is another day and another team. The Braves just have to keep plugging.
But my wife’s question is still resonating with me. Do the Braves have trouble playing in the NATIONAL spotlight?

I’m not sure about game situation, but it does seem like Heyward is a goner when he has two strikes on him lately. Seems like a K is the only scenario with him when he’s down in the count. His strikeouts are bizarre. 115 in 407 at bats.

162-0. Otherwise failure. I get it MFin. The team should have scored 6 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th of a road game. The Braves should have dominated with a pitcher back from the dead, out of baseball for 2 years. Here’s a clue…you will lose some that you thought you should have won…AND win some that the other guys thought they should have won…AND no one wins nearly all of them. Hey, I’ve been saying “win the division” since forever. The difference between us is that I realize that the division is still there to be won, last night’s loss notwithstanding. When they pick up ground in the standings is irrelevant, because the the only day the standings mean anything is the one after game 162.

Agreed, but it is easier to pick up ground now then it is later. Certainly a lot less pressure. Unless you don’t believe in pressure, clutch, etc.
But nevertheless they do have to pick up 5 games on the Nationals before the season is over if they want to win the division. It isn’t like the 5 games magically appear after game 162.

There are going to be a lot of teams that would kill to be in the wild card elimination game. Most of the teams, in fact.
If you get one of the two wild card slots, then it means your season isn’t over. You control your own destiny. You’re not going back to the stadium to clean out your locker, you get to still play baseball in a game that matters.
We shouldn’t be viewing the wild card game as a bad thing. It’s the playoffs. We’d get at least 9 more innings of baseball while other fans are ripping up player cards and tearing pennants off of their walls.

As for Janish, he has been great at SS, just doesn’t seem to be able to hit worth a darn, only warning track power and he really has crushed some balls, they just can’t get out. Would be nice to get a little more production out of the 8-spot in the order.

I haven’t said anything about Pastornicky. He wasn’t good enough to start defensively, but his offense has been better than the other two options. He has been good off the bench. I don’t see the Braves sending him down. I’m assuming we will keep Simmons and Pastornicky up. Pastornicky has the speed and bat that the other guys don’t. At what point is this Sheets experiment going to be over. Medlin needs to be the fifth starter. Send Sheets to the pen or elsewhere. Also, Jason needs to be out of the 3rd spot. He is not consistent in clutch situations. Move Chipper back to 3rd, Freeman clean up, and McCann/Hayward after him. I’m well aware that would be 2 lefties back to back but it works for other teams, why not us.I am also aware that Mac is a lefty. If Uggla ever becomes a consistent hitter again, he could be between Freeman and Hayward/Mac.

I don’t understand why ESPN showed the AL standings more than the NL standings in a game, and they talked more about Strasburg and the Nationals than the Braves and Mets.
Of course they did say Kimbrel/Chapman should win the Cy Young, crazy and impossible is that is, it would be fun.

He has been good off the bench. I don’t see the Braves sending him down. I’m assuming we will keep Simmons and Pastornicky up. Pastornicky has the speed and bat that the other guys don’t. And one inning of defense shouldn’t kill this team.”
Wrong again. When Simmons comes back, he will start, Janish will go to the bench and Pastornicky will go to the bench — roster expansion in September.

That’s what I keep hearing. He’s dominate for one inning, but with his past control issues (41 walks in 50 innings in 2011) I don’t know how good he’d be for 9. I think I’d prefer him at the back end.

True scoots but if we lose tonight, what will you say tomorrow?
“Strap up, and let’s win today.” Same thing I’d say if they win tonight.
Which is kinda the whole point. Baseball isn’t linear: good teams can lose to bad teams for any given game, high-powered offenses (like this one) can get shut down for any given game, good pitchers can throw clunkers for any given game. Unlike most sports, results of a specific game are sometimes not indicative of the expected results over a large number of games.
Now, that’s a fairly important point when it comes to uderstanding and enjoying baseball, in my opinion. That is, if one is a baseball fan, rather than a winning fan. Maybe that’s why some of us take to task the flat-earthers who go crazy at any inning without a run and any pitch that doesn’t result in an out. We’re just trying to help.

From MLBTR:
Extension Candidate: Martin Prado
By Mike Axisa [August 13, 2012 at 10:24am CST]
The Braves currently sit atop the NL Wild Card race thanks in large part to the impact and versatility of Martin Prado. The 28-year-old is hitting .295/.357/.416 with 30 doubles and 14 steals (in 16 attempts) while playing left field (88 games), third base (18 games), second base (four games), first base (three games), and shortstop (two games). Quite a bargain for $4.75MM.
Last month we heard that the Braves want to sign Prado to a multiyear contract extension because they believe he is their long-term replacement for Chipper Jones at third base. The two sides have yet to start serious negotiations, however. Prado will be arbitration-eligible for the third and final time this offseason and is due to become a free agent following the 2013 campaign.
Given his unique career, it’s very tough to pin down Prado’s value relative to his peers. The best comparison may be Alex Gordon, who has also spent significant time at third base and in left field. He’s a career .268/.348/.437 hitter with 77 homers in over 2,800 plate appearances, and signed a four-year, $37.5MM extension (with a $12.5MM player option for a fifth year) back in Spring Training. He was due to become a free agent after 2013 as well.
Prado is a .294/.344/.431 career hitter with 47 homers in just over 2,600 career plate appearances, so he matches up well with Gordon in the OBP and SLG departments. Gordon had his big breakout season a year ago while Prado has been a bit more consistent, posting a 108 OPS+ four times in the last five seasons. Gordon has done it three times in his five-year career, but he’s also been demoted to the minors on a few occasions.
Because he’s closer to free agency and has an All-Star Game nomination to his credit, Prado and his representatives at Peter E. Greenberg & Associates should have no problem asking for something north of Gordon’s deal. Perhaps four years and $40-45MM makes sense for both parties, especially the team since it’s easy to see him eclipsing that guarantee on the open market 15-16 months from now.
The Braves have shown a willingness to sign players to extensions in the middle of the season, most notably with Chipper years ago and David Ross back in 2010. Prado’s upcoming arbitration case figures to bump his salary up into the $7-8MM range next year, if not even higher. Given the impending free agency of Michael Bourn, Atlanta may want to act quickly to avoid potentially losing two core offensive pieces in back-to-back winters.

I’d much rather see him headed out to pitch an important game than Hanson. I can only see 2 reasons why he’s not starting already:
1) They’re worried he’ll hurt his arm making the transition to more innings, or
2) They think they need him more in the pen

Honestly
With the way teams run at will on Big Red, I do not want to see him as a starter in the Playoffs, if we make it… Teams are gonna continue to exploit the fact that he is as slow as old Hideo Nomo when he comes to the plate…
He is gonna need a total makeover to start keeping runners honest….

A 6 man rotation is the best way to go right now. Seeing how we’re loaded with mid rotation pitchers and not one really out playing another, there’s nothing wrong with keeping them all fresh for the stretch run. This would increase our chances of staying successful.

All 3 teams scare me in a one game playoff
The Reds, because they have a Sick Bullpen, they have great team speed and can outslug ya
The Giants, Their Rotation is Sick and The Melk-dud will pull a 2004-05? Carlos Blowtran on us
The Pirates…They want payback for the last 20 years and their pitchers scare me….
In Any scenario we don’t look too good to face a 1 game elimination because bad luck and the Umpires will be against us….

…..Well, I know we still have surging personnel issues this morning, it seems the “mammos” have taken on an Olympic-like quality recently…..those long ones lighten up our world, if you will. Should Dan Uggla take his mini-surge to full-surge…..look out everyone; especially you Pole Vaulters. Mr. Prado and Mr. Heyward alike are recognizing the ’surgency’ of a play off spot with their focus as impressive as the new 2013 Ford Focus. There is much that is right on Mr. Wren’s legal pad….a dot here….check mark there….even a happy face at the top. Moveover, perhaps these final 20 odd dates at home we will see chipper weather and maybe Chipper weather the ’surge’ to a very special end result. Bourn will start it off….and, lastly, I can see Mac and Rossy over in the corner flipping a coin in hopes of receiving the ball first….in the distance, a fan yells….”Go Fredi, go!!!

Hanson’s problem isn’t the fact that he’s slow to the plate.. it’s the fact that he walks way too many hitters and allows extremely too many homeruns.

Something is needed in the ‘pen… Kimbrel, O’Flaherty, and Venters (if he’s back) isn’t enough. C-Mart, Gearrin, and Avilan aren’t all that inspiring to me… Either Meds or Hanson needs to go there.
Meds has proven that he can pitch effectively out of the pen, Hanson hasn’t. However, Medlen is doing great in the rotation, and Hanson hasn’t for a while now… Gonna be a tough decision.

I’m alright with the make up of our bull pen right now as long as they are used correctly and our starters can continue to go deep into games. These 3 guys (Kimbrel, O’Flaherty, and Venters) used in close situations and these 3 guys (C-Mart, Gearrin, and Avilan) for 3 to 4 plus run leads.

Medlen

Hanson
I’m ok if they leave Hanson out of the 5 man rotation. If they want to add him to a 6 man rotation, I’m fine with that. Just don’t replace Medlen in the rotation with Hanson. Medlen is the better pitcher in soo many ways.

6 men rotaton is possible with September coming and rosters expanding however that being said Ben Sheets was a great story but he is finished. He gave us 4 wins and we should be thankful to him but yesterday he couldn’t finish off the Met hitters. He is the weakest link and Hanson should replace him. To be fair I would give Sheets one more start but seeing him yesterday he looked like a guy who was finished. I do think that one caution would be going two weeks with a short pen. If those six starters leak innings, and I mean any at all, there’s a risk that the bullpen guys get overused at a very inopportune time. The FO may think that’s an acceptable risk, though.

Medlen needs to stay in the rotation. With a bullpen of Kimbrel, O’Flaherty, Venters, Durbin, Martinez, and 2 of Moylan/Gearrin/Avilan, the ‘pen will be fine. Medlen gives us a chance to win almost every time he pitches. Leave him there.

AG Russell took a sowbelly handle, fattened up one end of it and hung a wharncliffe blade off the other end.
I love the cocabola version, an unusual and IMO attractive slip joint that can “walk and talk” its way around any piece if wood.

Unlikely — Braves will want another LH PH off the bench (besides Francisco). Plus, I don’t think any team would carry three one-position SSs.
CrαZy (August 13th, 2012 11:18 am): ” (’I think Janish and Rev stay, Hinske goes.’)
“I understand this thinking, but I wonder how much Fredi values having a balanced bench. Without Hinske your only LH bat is Francisco. I think there’s a very good chance the “Rev” is the odd man out. W/ Ross, Johnson, Francisco, Hinske and Janish as the playoff bench.”
Agreed — Janish over Pastornicky, Hinske over either.

Most of the time, I would agree. But this is the last 50. If the bully gets overused now, there is less time for them to recover equilibrium. It’s the lingering effect of overuse that could be the problem.
I’m certainly not saying that this will occur, especially if the offense continues to turn ‘n’ burn. Just saying that the possibility exists, and that possibility should probably be part of the decision-making process of how deep to take the rotation..

The new post season format will probably kill us this year. If we don’t win the divsion we will end up facing one of the following
1) Cain and the Giants
2) Kershaw and the Dodgers
3) Wainwright and offensive Cardinals
In a one game playoff. All of the above pitchers are better than our best. We have very little shot of winning that one game. Division is our only hope to the NLDS.
