Great pitching last night by the other guy. Came back against the BP…as expected. Would have been nice if we could have gotten him out sooner…but the loss last night is on the pitching….a rare one lately. It happens.

Crazy twist on Breaking Bad last night. Had to happen. They are drug dealers. Can’t pretend otherwise.
August 13th, 20129:12 am
yeah, last night was a bummer, especially after the almost comeback. in that inning, the ugly AB belonged to uggla with 2 on a no one out.
games like last night are reminders that its always a good idea to score one more run (the mets needed every one they got) and its always important to prevent every run you can (had the bullpen held, we win the game).
mitchell and Mixxo being themselves…on steroids, last night, I see. Mixxo must have gotten at least one comment removed. Must have been even worse than usual…even though we continue to win series. Here’s a clue, guys..you can’t do ANYTHING about the Nats playing over their heads.
The Braves have been winning series. That’s the key.
Absolutely correct. They’re playing at a 95-win pace, fercrissake, LOL. Only a “realist” would find fault with that.
August 13th, 20129:13 am
Depressing loss. Not much else to say.
They came back to within 1 run in the bottom of the ninth… That isn’t depressing. Losing 9 nothing, like on July 17th to the Giants, that’s a bummer.
Niese is good. Mets have starting pitching, David Wright, Ruben Tejada and question marks(although I like Ike Davis more than most).
August 13th, 20129:14 am
“The Braves have been winning series. That’s the key.”
No, the key is sweeping series with your best pitcher on the mound and your best lineup on the field. Not to mention the key is to win the division. 4.5 games back, could’ve been 3.5 games. That’s a big game that “slipped” away.
Look who’s creeping up on the Yankees: Tampa Bay.
Braves can go .500 for the remainder of the season(48 games) and still win 90 games. That’s a good position to be in. And I really like their September schedule.
August 13th, 20129:16 am
Scored 4 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth. That’s pretty good. Doesn’t happen much.
Wow. From Jurrjens to this(and lots of stuff inbetween I can’t recall right now), you have it all wrong, dude.
That’s a big game that “slipped” away.
August 13th, 20129:17 am
“They came back to within 1 run in the bottom of the ninth… That isn’t depressing.”
That IS the depressing part.
95 win pace doesn’t mean anything if you don’t win the division. Don’t want this team playing a 1-game playoff.
If the Braves win tonight, they’ll have gone 15-5 since the stretch against sub .500 teams began. Just can’t understand the angst at “only” playing .750 baseball.
No, the key is sweeping series
162-0 is the key. Anything less is an embarrassment.
August 13th, 20129:18 am
Huh, let’s see. That’s a “big game that slipped away?”
The Braves are 4.5 back with 48 games to play (the Nats have 47 games left).
So last night was just pivotal to the Braves’ fortunes?
Reality check time, amigo.
McFann :Ô: :Ô: :ô:
August 13th, 20129:19 am
TennPaul 162-0 is the key. Anything less is an embarrassment.
August 13th, 20129:20 am
“Scored 4 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth. That’s pretty good”
Pretty good, isn’t good enough. Still lost. Exciting loss, but still a loss.
Not to mention the key is to win the division. 4.5 games back, could’ve been 3.5 games. That’s a big game that “slipped” away.
So, this will be one of the myriad games (70 or so) that we can “pinpoint” if the team comes up one game short? That about it?
What about the split in DC? Is this loss worse than the two losses there? How about any of the eight games during the season-worst losing streak? Worse than any of those? How about Kimbrel’s blown saves? Worse than those?
August 13th, 20129:21 am
I would appreciate if you would not drag us all into your dystopia.
August 13th, 20129:22 am
Good to see Prado with two 2B’s last night. .295/.357/.416 on the year and I hope he gets hot here during the last seven weeks.
I dunno—coming up just a little short like that isn’t as bad as tying and then losing anyway…
A-course, the one god thing about that woulda been Ben Sheets wouldn’t have gotten the loss…
August 13th, 20129:23 am
Not to mention the key is to win the division. 4.5 games back, could’ve been 3.5 games.
Obviously, three and a half back is good, but four and a half back is catastrophic.
August 13th, 20129:24 am
I was exciting as anyone for the comeback last night, but it still counts as a loss. Gotta move on and win tonight, another series that would be great for a sweep. 4.5 games is a lot when trailing the best team in baseball. Gotta gain ground when you can.
Efrim Good to see Prado with two 2B’s last night.
Sure is! Two Doubles in one game looks like a lot of fun…Heck, one Double in one game would be a lotta fun…
August 13th, 20129:27 am
Pretty good, isn’t good enough
162-0. Otherwise failure. I get it MFin. The team should have scored 6 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th of a road game. The Braves should have dominated with a pitcher back from the dead, out of baseball for 2 years. The Mets only had a guy who averages 6.1 IP per start this season, allows barely a hit or a walk an inning and is 25 with a sub 3.75 ERA… that guy should have rolled over.
Brian from SC
August 13th, 20129:28 am
The Padres at one time looked like the worst team in baseball…not so much anymore. They are 23-15 since June 30th. They’re hitting the ball much better over the last month and half. Headley and Yonder Alonso are hot.
August 13th, 20129:30 am
4.5 games is a lot when trailing the best team in baseball.
four and half with ten times that many to play is squat. That’s a half a week’s games.
If you weren’t around for that ‘93 race, these last 50 might be too much for your blood pressure. If you were around, you know that a hot team doesn’t beat another hot team with a knockout. You jab and body-blow the guy and let the attrition of each round tell the final outcome.
Gotta move on and win tonight, another series that would be great for a sweep
MFin, just so you are prepared, this team will not sweep the rest of the season. They will lose more games before the season is over. No team in history has won 48 games in a row.
August 13th, 20129:31 am
Some of you guys are a little crazy this morning. Case of the Mondays? Wowza.
It was a big game, they lost. Not to mention they seem to have trouble on national TV. But whatever, win tonight, win tomorrow, win Wednesday and we might gain on the Nationals. Lose any one of those 3 games and be content with 4.5 games back and another series passed by.
If you are content with a iffy wildcard birth, then fine. I’m not. I’d rather this team win the division and have a better chance of keeping Michael Bourn.
“Exciting loss, but still a loss.”
Yes, a mind IS a terrible thing to waste.
August 13th, 20129:33 am
It was a big game, they lost.
Man, they’re all big games, from here on out. And the Braves are going to lose some of them.
August 13th, 20129:35 am
August 13th, 20129:36 am
MFin – WOW…just WOW. I’m sorry you are in such a sad place. I’ll say a prayer for you this morning.
They battled back and almost pulled it out. I can’t fault them for that. And there is no fault. Not going to win every game but to make it 6-5, for the final with the go-aheads on the pond, and the entire rally game with 2 outs. I can’t be mad.
Aren’t you glad the Braves’ don’t play in an extreme park? I would think it would be terrible to play in park that either kills your hitters or your pitchers.
The Padres are scoring a full run per game more on the road than they are at home (4.3 to 3.3)
Their road ERA is 4.73, compared to just 3.06 at Petco.
August 13th, 20129:37 am
“And the Braves are going to lose some of them.”
Never said they wouldn’t. Still doesn’t help them in the standings. 4.5 games back and must win the division.
August 13th, 20129:39 am
Yonder Alonso are hot.
The guy had two bad months, April and June. He’s been solid otherwise (.293/.365/.457/.822)
August 13th, 20129:41 am
Never said they wouldn’t. Still doesn’t help them in the standings.
162-0 is all you’ll accept…
“Aren’t you glad the Braves’ don’t play in an extreme park?”
It is tough to construct a team that way I’d think. I mean same with the AL East though. A lot of ridiculous joke parks there. If you had a pitcher friendly park it wouldn’t matter, still going to give a lot of runs up at Fenway, Yankee Stadium and others…
August 13th, 20129:43 am
Some people just don’t have a basic understanding of the nature of baseball. Here’s a clue…you will lose some that you thought you should have won…AND win some that the other guys thought they should have won…AND no one wins nearly all of them. All pitchers have bad nights…any pitcher can have a great night…and the best hitters succeed about 30% of the time.
August 13th, 20129:44 am
62-0 is the key. Anything less is an embarrassment – TennPaul
Not only 162-0, they Braves are not allowed to allow a run.
August 13th, 20129:46 am
ACE (ugust 12th, 2012 11:46 pm): “These are the games that the Cards won in Sept last year while the braves were melting down.”
No, the Cardinals didn’t win any games in Sept last year on August 12.
August 13th, 20129:47 am
“All pitchers have bad nights…any pitcher can have a great night…and the best hitters succeed about 30% of the time.”
Should also add that…. some Braves fans wanting their team to win the division should be ostracized at all costs because others only will accept a 1-game playoff for the wild card.
August 13th, 20129:49 am
MFin, still want Jurrjens pitching every fifth day? And the team to go 48-0 the rest of the season?
114-48 or bust!
August 13th, 20129:51 am
If the Braves win every home series remaining (not sweep), win all road series against bad teams, and lose or tie all road series against good teams, they will finish with 96 wins.
August 13th, 20129:52 am
The Padres blew a big lead in Pittsburgh yesterday. Won the first two games there because the Pirates’ bats went cold. But the Padres’ pitching was hammered yesterday.
August 13th, 20129:53 am
Should also add that…. some Braves fans wanting their team to win the division should be ostracized at all costs because others only will accept a 1-game playoff for the wild card
Hey, I’ve been saying “win the division” since forever. The difference between us is that I realize that the division is still there to be won, last night’s loss notwithstanding. When they pick up ground in the standings is irrelevant, because the the only day the standings mean anything is the one after game 162.
“If the Braves win every home series remaining (not sweep), win all road series against bad teams, and lose or tie all road series against good teams, they will finish with 96 wins.”
I’m not even sure what all of that means, but the other if…is if they collapse again…the Cardinals could win another World Series.
August 13th, 20129:54 am
When the Nat lost yesterday afternoon i told my wife, the Braves going to loss tonight, they don’t take avantage of opportunity when it present….no surprise for me we lost.
Don’t sleep on the Pads….this team is playing good lately.
August 13th, 20129:56 am
“When they pick up ground in the standings is irrelevant, because the the only day the standings mean anything is the one after game 162.”
Agreed, but it is easier to pick up ground now then it is later. Certainly a lot less pressure. Unless you don’t believe in pressure, clutch, etc.
But nevertheless they do have to pick up 5 games on the Nationals before the season is over if they want to win the division. It isn’t like the 5 games magically appear after game 162.
Nats step up in class with the Giants and Braves over the next ten days, and I don’t think they’re going to pull some eight-game winning streak out of that. So, the Braves have a chance to make up some ground and make MF a little happier.
August 13th, 20129:57 am
When does the JJ vs Sheets debate begin? Or did I already miss it? If not, please give me some warning so I can go read a different forum for a day or two.
Sounds like a high mountain to climb, but I believe it will take about 96 wins to take this division. Washington just has to go 25-22 to get to 96 wins.
Not that good. The Padres looked gawd-awful yesterday. There pitching is young and inexperienced.
I don’t think the Braves will take the Padres for granted, though.
August 13th, 201210:01 am
But nevertheless they do have to pick up 5 games on the Nationals before the season is over
The Nats went from one up to five up in the space of four days in June. Now, I know the standard for many folks here is that opponents are always capable of so much more than the Braves, but I don’t believe even the most “realistic” of fans believes that the Nats are incapable of having a modest losing streak.
Oh, who am I kidding? Of course, they do, LOL.
August 13th, 201210:02 am
MF – We all want to win the division, Dude (duh). Some of us just have realistic expectations.
scoots Man, they’re all big games, from here on out. And the Braves are going to lose some of them.
and itll be a bummer every time.
August 13th, 201210:05 am
You bet. But as long as there’s another one to play and the Braves haven’t been eliminated, I’ll still sleep like a baby after every L.
The Nats pace has been torrid. They could keep that going through the end of the season. But it’s not a given.
I think the best way to take the balance of the season is like ballplayers take it: one game at a time.
Can’t control what the Nats do, except for head-to-head match ups with the Braves.
Pads has before yesterday lost a 6 games wining , they win the series again the Pirates.
August 13th, 201210:07 am
“We all want to win the division, Dude (duh). Some of us just have realistic expectations.”
What is a realistic expectation? Apparently your expectation (and many on here) is that they won’t win the division and they can only win the wild card, mine is that they have to win the division.
August 13th, 201210:10 am
mine is that they have to win the division.
How about if the Giants sweep the Nats and the Braves sweep the Padres? Would that at least get you to back up on the ledge, LOL?
August 13th, 201210:12 am
MFin04, I certainly think the Braves can win the division. But I’m not going to despair if they don’t, especially if Washington ends up with somewhere around 97 wins.
August 13th, 201210:13 am
“Should also add that…. some Braves fans wanting their team to win the division should be ostracized at all costs because others only will accept a 1-game playoff for the wild card”
That stupid one game playoff scares the Tar out of me, because 1) Since 2000ish The Braves have sucked in elimination games and 2) Bad Luck always happens to the Braves in Huge games in October weather it be costly errors or A F’d Up umpiring crew….
That WC showdown should be a best of 3. I dont see us beating the Pirates in a 1 game playoff. Not to mention we are not Gonna Catch the Curley W’s. The Kool aid Drinkers on here seem to forget that the Nats have Owned us in September since 2009
“But I’m not going to despair if they don’t”
Ok, will you despair if they lose out on the division and get swept out of the playoffs (in 1 game)?
August 13th, 201210:15 am
That would be a bad day, but that day is a long ways from today.
“Can’t control what the Nats do, except for head-to-head match ups with the Braves.”
Co-Sign, I get tired of people and the team thinking that other teams are gonna stop them…much of the same happened last year with the Cardinals…People thinking that someone would beat them the last 2 weeks of the season….
August 13th, 201210:16 am
Yeah, Berkman for LF in 2013 isn’t sounding so good afterall.
August 13th, 201210:18 am
OMG, we lost last night and are still 4.5 back of the Nats… no ground lost… yet we still are rushing for the bridges to jump off of…
Just looking to be within 2 games of the Nats heading into next Monday. That’d mean a 2-4 week from Washington and a 5-2 week from us.
August 13th, 201210:19 am
“That would be a bad day, but that day is a long ways from today.”
Yep, it was last year as well. And same people on here were drinking the koolaid saying that it was impossible to collapse. Well it happened.
I’d like to think that we can get over that this year and win the dang division. But apparently you aren’t a Braves fan if you want your team to win the division, sweep a series, or complete a 9th inning comeback.
August 13th, 201210:20 am
What should Braves do for now?
Five-man rotation with Tommy Hanson.
Five-man rotation with Kris Medlen.
August 13th, 201210:21 am
Can we Bank On Lil Andy Simmons Coming Back in 2 Weeks After the Braves Hit That West Coast Swing???
Janish has been servicable at SS much better than Hack Wilson, but we need Lil Andy’s Bat and Charisma! He’s a Baby-Face!
“we lost last night and are still 4.5 back of the Nats… no ground lost”
Not really true. Technically we did lose ground. We were 4 games back, with a shot at 3.5 games back, and instead are 4.5 games back. Ground lost.
But apparently you aren’t a Braves fan if you want your team to win the division, sweep a series, or complete a 9th inning comeback.
You’re nuts, dude. You think the other people here didn’t want the Braves to win last night? Has anyone accused you of not being a Braves fan? Lighten up, francis.
There are going to be a lot of teams that would kill to be in the wild card elimination game. Most of the teams, in fact.
If you get one of the two wild card slots, then it means your season isn’t over. You control your own destiny. You’re not going back to the stadium to clean out your locker, you get to still play baseball in a game that matters.
We shouldn’t be viewing the wild card game as a bad thing. It’s the playoffs. We’d get at least 9 more innings of baseball while other fans are ripping up player cards and tearing pennants off of their walls.
August 13th, 201210:22 am
If you think that I don’t believe we can win the division, you have clearly not been reading this blog for the past 7 or so years. I believe we WILL win the division, last night notwithstanding.
BUT…DUDE…yes, the WC is much more difficult route. But to say we MUST win the division….Well, I guess if we don’t, there’s no point in actually showing up and playing the game. We are doomed as a WC team. (I don’t believe that)
Truth is, a WC team must win that first game…then they are on near equal standing with other teams. Especially in our case, when most of our pitchers have similar ability to win.
August 13th, 201210:24 am
“OMG, we lost last night and are still 4.5 back of the Nats… no ground lost… yet we still are rushing for the bridges to jump off of…”
Yeah I was looking for one of the 150ft Flyovers at Spaghetti Junction This Morning but it was a Parking lot over there
We Will Not Catch The Curley W’s, Bank on It…That mean we better come Correct that last series in the Steel City, where those Rowdy Stiller Fans will be ready to throw down for the 1st time in 20 years…
I was in 2nd Grade the last time the Pirates had a Playoff/Elimination game…
August 13th, 201210:26 am
Brian from SC
Looking at the Blog from last night, I don’t think many people watched the game last night? I think most people on here hate the Sunday night games, I sure as hell do….
Is BSPN that bad? That Braves Fans dont watch our games when they air it out of Protest
August 13th, 201210:27 am
Sign me up for a Five-man rotation with Kris Medlen. Not sure “Tommy Home Run 5-nning Hanson” is really worth bringing back, especially when we won’t have the guy in the bullpen to carry us the extra 2 innings he can’t pitch.
As for Janish, he has been great at SS, just doesn’t seem to be able to hit worth a darn, only warning track power and he really has crushed some balls, they just can’t get out. Would be nice to get a little more production out of the 8-spot in the order.
August 13th, 201210:28 am
Not really true. Technically we did lose ground. We were 4 games back, with a shot at 3.5 games back, and instead are 4.5 games back.
When the day started, before any games were played, we were 4.5 back. When all the games were over for the night, we were 4.5 back. No ground lost.
Especially in our case, when most of our pitchers have similar ability to win.
Why? Cuz they’re all #2/3 starters?
August 13th, 201210:29 am
Mfin – Let me say this one more time…SLOWLY so that you can understand…we ALL want the Braves to win EVERY game, we ALL want them to win the division, the NL, the WS. We would love for them to go undefeated for the rest of 2012…and 2013 for that matter. duh! Duh! DUH!
Some of us just realize that you will lose some games, and that last night was not the end of the world…and if we have to, we could actually still win the WS as a WC team. There are several other teams that believe they are also good enough to win it all…and you know what…they are! AND NONE OF US HAVE GIVEN UP ON WINNING THE DIVISION.
August 13th, 201210:30 am

We Will Not Catch The Curley W’s, Bank on It
Sign me up for a Five-man rotation with Kris Medlen.
I’m leaning that way too… he’s been too good to take out. It’s surprised me how good he is, however, he will be due to regress sometime soon.
As for SS…. Would be nice to get a little more production out of the 8-spot in the order.
You could’ve had it… but you didn’t want REV to start anymore
August 13th, 201210:34 am
I am OK with 6 man for the next 19 games. Then evaluate, with additional information. Gives everyone a little extra rest, for the final push and post season.
“We shouldn’t be viewing the wild card game as a bad thing.”
Yes, we should. It IS a bad thing. Or at least not the best thing. No we aren’t the Phillies or Red Sox with no shot at the playoffs and a HUGE payroll, but a 1-game playoff when you are the best team in your league or at worst 2nd best team in your league is definitely a bad thing.
August 13th, 201210:36 am
VJ – Looking at the overnights, I could tell he must have gone even more nutzo than usual. I would love to know what was removed. Today, he is just the regular level of nutzo.
August 13th, 201210:37 am
We shouldn’t be viewing the wild card game as a bad thing.”
Yes, we should.
Why is it bad? You get home-field for the first 2 games of the NLDS after!
IMO….I going with six man rotation for the next 16 days…
Go with Minor (Today), Hudson (Tues), Maholm (Wed),Medlen(Thurs),Sheet (Fri)
and Hanson (Sat) with Minor (Sun)…..Them for the series at Natl…Hudson,Maholm,Medlen.
August 13th, 201210:38 am
“You could’ve had it… but you didn’t want REV to start anymore”
I haven’t said anything about Pastornicky. He wasn’t good enough to start defensively, but his offense has been better than the other two options. He has been good off the bench. I don’t see the Braves sending him down. I’m assuming we will keep Simmons and Pastornicky up. Pastornicky has the speed and bat that the other guys don’t. And one inning of defense shouldn’t kill this team.
August 13th, 201210:41 am
“Why is it bad? You get home-field for the first 2 games of the NLDS after!”
Lol, most ridiculous rule in all of sports right there. The one game playoff is ridiculous, but then giving the team who wins it an advantage by playing 2 straight at home? Who comes up with this garbage? Must be the guys who created the BCS.
I’d still rather not play in a 1-game playoff. But if the Braves miraculously got through it, it would be an advantage to play the first two at home. Of course…we have been a great road team…who knows. JUST WIN THE DIVISION.
August 13th, 201210:42 am
Sorry if this was discussed, I may have missed it: did anyone hear Orel Hershiser say last night that the Braves think Sheets may have a “dead arm”? What does that mean if he does? There have also been comments that his command and velocity is down in the past couple of games, what are the ramifications of that?
August 13th, 201210:44 am
“Dead arm” usually refers to a temporary period when the pitcher isn’t getting the velocity he wants. I don’t know all the scientific explanation, but it’s not really an injury. Just something that crops up that goes away after a brief period.
August 13th, 201210:45 am
Well… I figured with Bobby Cox gone we would go 173-0 last year and would be dominating yet again this season… Oh Well!!
I dunno man, I had the game on Mute and then turned it off during the 6th inning and started watching Any Given Sunday…Cameron Diaz MMMMMM! in that flick
August 13th, 201210:46 am
MF – If the Braves “miraculously get through it”? ??? Miraculously? They will likely be the favored team, with home field advantage.
