No, the key is sweeping series with your best pitcher on the mound and your best lineup on the field. Not to mention the key is to win the division. 4.5 games back, could’ve been 3.5 games. That’s a big game that “slipped” away.
Braves can go .500 for the remainder of the season(48 games) and still win 90 games. That’s a good position to be in. And I really like their September schedule.

162-0. Otherwise failure. I get it MFin. The team should have scored 6 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th of a road game. The Braves should have dominated with a pitcher back from the dead, out of baseball for 2 years. The Mets only had a guy who averages 6.1 IP per start this season, allows barely a hit or a walk an inning and is 25 with a sub 3.75 ERA… that guy should have rolled over.
The Padres at one time looked like the worst team in baseball…not so much anymore. They are 23-15 since June 30th. They’re hitting the ball much better over the last month and half. Headley and Yonder Alonso are hot.

four and half with ten times that many to play is squat. That’s a half a week’s games.

If you are content with a iffy wildcard birth, then fine. I’m not. I’d rather this team win the division and have a better chance of keeping Michael Bourn.

Aren’t you glad the Braves’ don’t play in an extreme park? I would think it would be terrible to play in park that either kills your hitters or your pitchers.

“All pitchers have bad nights…any pitcher can have a great night…and the best hitters succeed about 30% of the time.”
Should also add that…. some Braves fans wanting their team to win the division should be ostracized at all costs because others only will accept a 1-game playoff for the wild card.
If the Braves win every home series remaining (not sweep), win all road series against bad teams, and lose or tie all road series against good teams, they will finish with 96 wins.
The Padres blew a big lead in Pittsburgh yesterday. Won the first two games there because the Pirates’ bats went cold. But the Padres’ pitching was hammered yesterday.
Should also add that…. some Braves fans wanting their team to win the division should be ostracized at all costs because others only will accept a 1-game playoff for the wild card
Hey, I’ve been saying “win the division” since forever. The difference between us is that I realize that the division is still there to be won, last night’s loss notwithstanding. When they pick up ground in the standings is irrelevant, because the the only day the standings mean anything is the one after game 162.
“If the Braves win every home series remaining (not sweep), win all road series against bad teams, and lose or tie all road series against good teams, they will finish with 96 wins.”
I’m not even sure what all of that means, but the other if…is if they collapse again…the Cardinals could win another World Series.
When the Nat lost yesterday afternoon i told my wife, the Braves going to loss tonight, they don’t take avantage of opportunity when it present….no surprise for me we lost.
Don’t sleep on the Pads….this team is playing good lately.
“When they pick up ground in the standings is irrelevant, because the the only day the standings mean anything is the one after game 162.”
Agreed, but it is easier to pick up ground now then it is later. Certainly a lot less pressure. Unless you don’t believe in pressure, clutch, etc.
But nevertheless they do have to pick up 5 games on the Nationals before the season is over if they want to win the division. It isn’t like the 5 games magically appear after game 162.
Nats step up in class with the Giants and Braves over the next ten days, and I don’t think they’re going to pull some eight-game winning streak out of that. So, the Braves have a chance to make up some ground and make MF a little happier.
When does the JJ vs Sheets debate begin? Or did I already miss it? If not, please give me some warning so I can go read a different forum for a day or two.
Sounds like a high mountain to climb, but I believe it will take about 96 wins to take this division. Washington just has to go 25-22 to get to 96 wins.
But nevertheless they do have to pick up 5 games on the Nationals before the season is over
The Nats went from one up to five up in the space of four days in June. Now, I know the standard for many folks here is that opponents are always capable of so much more than the Braves, but I don’t believe even the most “realistic” of fans believes that the Nats are incapable of having a modest losing streak.
“We all want to win the division, Dude (duh). Some of us just have realistic expectations.”
What is a realistic expectation? Apparently your expectation (and many on here) is that they won’t win the division and they can only win the wild card, mine is that they have to win the division.
MFin04, I certainly think the Braves can win the division. But I’m not going to despair if they don’t, especially if Washington ends up with somewhere around 97 wins.
“All pitchers have bad nights…any pitcher can have a great night…and the best hitters succeed about 30% of the time.”
“Should also add that…. some Braves fans wanting their team to win the division should be ostracized at all costs because others only will accept a 1-game playoff for the wild card”
That stupid one game playoff scares the Tar out of me, because 1) Since 2000ish The Braves have sucked in elimination games and 2) Bad Luck always happens to the Braves in Huge games in October weather it be costly errors or A F’d Up umpiring crew….
That WC showdown should be a best of 3. I dont see us beating the Pirates in a 1 game playoff. Not to mention we are not Gonna Catch the Curley W’s. The Kool aid Drinkers on here seem to forget that the Nats have Owned us in September since 2009
“Can’t control what the Nats do, except for head-to-head match ups with the Braves.”
Co-Sign, I get tired of people and the team thinking that other teams are gonna stop them…much of the same happened last year with the Cardinals…People thinking that someone would beat them the last 2 weeks of the season….
“That would be a bad day, but that day is a long ways from today.”
Yep, it was last year as well. And same people on here were drinking the koolaid saying that it was impossible to collapse. Well it happened.
I’d like to think that we can get over that this year and win the dang division. But apparently you aren’t a Braves fan if you want your team to win the division, sweep a series, or complete a 9th inning comeback.
But apparently you aren’t a Braves fan if you want your team to win the division, sweep a series, or complete a 9th inning comeback.
You’re nuts, dude. You think the other people here didn’t want the Braves to win last night? Has anyone accused you of not being a Braves fan? Lighten up, francis.
There are going to be a lot of teams that would kill to be in the wild card elimination game. Most of the teams, in fact.
If you get one of the two wild card slots, then it means your season isn’t over. You control your own destiny. You’re not going back to the stadium to clean out your locker, you get to still play baseball in a game that matters.
We shouldn’t be viewing the wild card game as a bad thing. It’s the playoffs. We’d get at least 9 more innings of baseball while other fans are ripping up player cards and tearing pennants off of their walls.
If you think that I don’t believe we can win the division, you have clearly not been reading this blog for the past 7 or so years. I believe we WILL win the division, last night notwithstanding.
BUT…DUDE…yes, the WC is much more difficult route. But to say we MUST win the division….Well, I guess if we don’t, there’s no point in actually showing up and playing the game. We are doomed as a WC team. (I don’t believe that)
Truth is, a WC team must win that first game…then they are on near equal standing with other teams. Especially in our case, when most of our pitchers have similar ability to win.
“OMG, we lost last night and are still 4.5 back of the Nats… no ground lost… yet we still are rushing for the bridges to jump off of…”
Yeah I was looking for one of the 150ft Flyovers at Spaghetti Junction This Morning but it was a Parking lot over there
We Will Not Catch The Curley W’s, Bank on It…That mean we better come Correct that last series in the Steel City, where those Rowdy Stiller Fans will be ready to throw down for the 1st time in 20 years…
I was in 2nd Grade the last time the Pirates had a Playoff/Elimination game…
Looking at the Blog from last night, I don’t think many people watched the game last night? I think most people on here hate the Sunday night games, I sure as hell do….
Is BSPN that bad? That Braves Fans dont watch our games when they air it out of Protest
Sign me up for a Five-man rotation with Kris Medlen. Not sure “Tommy Home Run 5-nning Hanson” is really worth bringing back, especially when we won’t have the guy in the bullpen to carry us the extra 2 innings he can’t pitch.
As for Janish, he has been great at SS, just doesn’t seem to be able to hit worth a darn, only warning track power and he really has crushed some balls, they just can’t get out. Would be nice to get a little more production out of the 8-spot in the order.
Mfin – Let me say this one more time…SLOWLY so that you can understand…we ALL want the Braves to win EVERY game, we ALL want them to win the division, the NL, the WS. We would love for them to go undefeated for the rest of 2012…and 2013 for that matter. duh! Duh! DUH!
Some of us just realize that you will lose some games, and that last night was not the end of the world…and if we have to, we could actually still win the WS as a WC team. There are several other teams that believe they are also good enough to win it all…and you know what…they are! AND NONE OF US HAVE GIVEN UP ON WINNING THE DIVISION.
I am OK with 6 man for the next 19 games. Then evaluate, with additional information. Gives everyone a little extra rest, for the final push and post season.
“We shouldn’t be viewing the wild card game as a bad thing.”
Yes, we should. It IS a bad thing. Or at least not the best thing. No we aren’t the Phillies or Red Sox with no shot at the playoffs and a HUGE payroll, but a 1-game playoff when you are the best team in your league or at worst 2nd best team in your league is definitely a bad thing.
VJ – Looking at the overnights, I could tell he must have gone even more nutzo than usual. I would love to know what was removed. Today, he is just the regular level of nutzo.
IMO….I going with six man rotation for the next 16 days…
Go with Minor (Today), Hudson (Tues), Maholm (Wed),Medlen(Thurs),Sheet (Fri)
and Hanson (Sat) with Minor (Sun)…..Them for the series at Natl…Hudson,Maholm,Medlen.
“You could’ve had it… but you didn’t want REV to start anymore”
I haven’t said anything about Pastornicky. He wasn’t good enough to start defensively, but his offense has been better than the other two options. He has been good off the bench. I don’t see the Braves sending him down. I’m assuming we will keep Simmons and Pastornicky up. Pastornicky has the speed and bat that the other guys don’t. And one inning of defense shouldn’t kill this team.
“Why is it bad? You get home-field for the first 2 games of the NLDS after!”
Lol, most ridiculous rule in all of sports right there. The one game playoff is ridiculous, but then giving the team who wins it an advantage by playing 2 straight at home? Who comes up with this garbage? Must be the guys who created the BCS.
I’d still rather not play in a 1-game playoff. But if the Braves miraculously got through it, it would be an advantage to play the first two at home. Of course…we have been a great road team…who knows. JUST WIN THE DIVISION.
Sorry if this was discussed, I may have missed it: did anyone hear Orel Hershiser say last night that the Braves think Sheets may have a “dead arm”? What does that mean if he does? There have also been comments that his command and velocity is down in the past couple of games, what are the ramifications of that?
“Dead arm” usually refers to a temporary period when the pitcher isn’t getting the velocity he wants. I don’t know all the scientific explanation, but it’s not really an injury. Just something that crops up that goes away after a brief period.
I dunno man, I had the game on Mute and then turned it off during the 6th inning and started watching Any Given Sunday…Cameron Diaz MMMMMM! in that flick

If the Braves win every home series remaining (not sweep), win all road series against bad teams, and lose or tie all road series against good teams, they will finish with 96 wins.

Hey, I’ve been saying “win the division” since forever. The difference between us is that I realize that the division is still there to be won, last night’s loss notwithstanding. When they pick up ground in the standings is irrelevant, because the the only day the standings mean anything is the one after game 162.

The Nats went from one up to five up in the space of four days in June. Now, I know the standard for many folks here is that opponents are always capable of so much more than the Braves, but I don’t believe even the most “realistic” of fans believes that the Nats are incapable of having a modest losing streak.

Truth is, a WC team must win that first game…then they are on near equal standing with other teams. Especially in our case, when most of our pitchers have similar ability to win.

Some of us just realize that you will lose some games, and that last night was not the end of the world…and if we have to, we could actually still win the WS as a WC team.

“Dead arm” usually refers to a temporary period when the pitcher isn’t getting the velocity he wants. I don’t know all the scientific explanation, but it’s not really an injury. Just something that crops up that goes away after a brief period.
