Man, for a team loaded with “aces” the Angels sure can’t get any starting pitching. Haren gives up 6 in 3.1 innings against the punchless Mariners. They’ve given up at least 6 runs in 6 of 10 August games.
Mercer invited me to walk on the play basketball coming out of high school. (an indication of what a hot prospect I was — that was the best offer I got. Figured my chances at the NBA were fairly limited, so I passed.)

‘82, phil. I didn’t go to school there, though. Just had a lot of discussion with the coaches, visited the campus, etc. One of the best players in the state played on my team, so we got a lot of college coaches at our games, and sometimes I’d catch the eye of one of the small school guys, on a good night.
But I had other options (not BB related) and decided not to go to school there just so I could ride the bench … regret it a little. Probably would’ve been fun. Nice place.
of his mammoth homer to CF, Freddie Freeman said, I gotta say that’s about as hard as I can hit one. He added that if we gave an estimate of 400 feet, he was going to be angry.
(For the record, Mets don’t give estimates but we figured about 445 feet)
Basketball was pretty good then. They went to the tournament in 84 I want to say. Sam Mitchell was there and led the nation in scoring that year. Went on to play and then coach in the NBA a few years.

Mark, yeah, I kinda’ forgot about all that. I did follow them in the papers during those years… I met a few guys that played there in ‘81-82 on a visit, but not him. You played baseball there?
Not sure of what else he could do to solidify a starting spot.
Sometimes versatility can be a detriment to a player rather than a plus because they can work him around other guys weaknesses for the betterment of the team.
Fredi G on Medlen: “He’s a valuable piece. It’s going to be one of those things, if everybody is pitching the way we’re pitchng, it’s going to be a tough decision whether we stay with five or go with six, or whatever. Because all these guys are pitching. We’ve rattled off some pretty good starts looking back about three weeks now.”
You are dead on. But I can see Fredi staying with the 6 man rotation while the schedule is full and also to get some of the other guys a little more rest.
But a lot will be determined by how well those 4 relievers you mentioned do from here on out. Gearrin doesn’t seem to be fooling anybody, though his ERA seems to have not suffered.

Medlen on taking advantage of his chance to start:
“I take the ball and run with it [laughs]. No, I love competing. I love the chess match of starting. Relieving, if you don’t have your pitches that day you get crushed. It’s two different mindsets, and I like this one.”
Meds gets moved to the pen – Hanson starts – gives up some hits, walks, runs, stolen bases and we lose while Meds is sitting down there in the pen.
Got a feeling that’s how it will go down. Well, not the loss part, necessarily, but that Hanson will take Meds’ place. But, coming off the DL, Fredi can have Hanson on a short leash if he gets into trouble and bring Medlen in if needed.
I don’t like the 6-man rotation either. These guys spend their entire lives training for a 5 day rotation. An extra day off might have unintended consequences. Plus, you do thin the ‘pen, and give your best pitchers (whoever that is, LOL) less starts.
