Ross gets first major league stolen base

Philadelphia – It took him 636 games and more than 10 seasons in the major leagues but Braves catcher David Ross finally has his first stolen base.

With Phillies reliever Josh Lindblom worrying about Paul Janish at the plate with two outs in the seventh inning – not to mention Dan Uggla’s bases clearing double a little while earlier – Ross took off from first base and never even drew a throw.

That story might change eventually for the grandkids but for now Ross said he’s just happy to have the base to display. He was able to retrieve second base after the game from the Phillies grounds crew.

“I’m going to have it in my house so everybody knows I at least got one,” Ross said. “I’m pretty proud of it. I got a good jump; that’s for sure. I better get a good jump if I’m going to steal a base.”

It was his first successful steal in four career attempts. Ross said Brian McCann has been making it look too easy, with his 21 stolen bases in eight seasons.

“Mac’s got a ton in his career and I’m just jealous,” Ross said. “I need to catch him a little bit. He’s got like five or six a year. I have one in my career. I told Mike (Bourn) when I came in after the game, I’m coming for him.”

He’s got 262 to go.

“I don’t get to run too much. Sometimes in the eighth hole with the pitcher behind you…I hate it when they put the red light on me because I’m really fast.”

I love it

Really good to have a “backup” like Ross. Seems like a good guy, too. Wonder if he’s the answer after next year….

That’s great for Ross. Don’t try it again though.

I’d like to see a base-running contest between Ross and McCann. Ross seems faster to me, so maybe this stolen base was his destiny…….

This guy can certainly lighten the clubhouse. Our lives can be a lot better too if some of our co-workers has the same sense of humor.

Because of broadcast problems, I did not see Ross steal second. Did he slide in head first.

Ross is a wonderful guy to have on the team and so is McCann, but if it comes down to a choice between paying Brian or Bourn next year, the Brave must go after Bourn first and then Brian. Michael is the first true leadoff hitter the Braves have had since Furcal and his fielding is spectacular. He is the Braves MVP.

The Braves MUST keep Bourn, even if that means saying Bye-Bye to McCan’t.

Pretty sure the Braves have an option they’ll pick up on McCann for 2013.

There is video at http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?c_id=atl&content_id=23751949

You can hear the Phillies yelling for the pitcher to step off the rubber. The pitcher either had no respect for Ross or absolutely forgot he was on first.

Thank goodness Baseball is still a game. Congratulations to Ross on being a good player, good guy and good team mate.

BMac certainly deserves to be extended and the Braves need his bat and clubhouse presence. But, given the Braves other needs, the issue is going to be the size and length of the contract. He’ll be able to get 5M more a year from an American League club… something like 10M vs 15M I suspect. I think, in the end, he’ll stay but that’s a lot of money to pass up.

If Brian leaves, Ross continues to be the perfect bridge/back up to Bethancourt,Gattis or a trade prospect.

This is hardly the unbelievable status of a Sid Bream stolen base.
Can you imagine slowpoke Sid stealing a base, when he barely made it home, in 1991?

What a ridiculous story. Nothing else available on a slow sports day I guess. Next, we will be hearing about BMac’s kid’s first potty trip.

Ross is a luxury to have as a backup, great attitude & a go getter on the field, Im sure he would make a great manager when he’s done, both he & McCann are signed thru next year, Im sure the Bravos are hoping Brian is still producing so that he will justify them giving him a mega contract cause I know he wants to be a Brave for life, catcher is not a problem in the ATL!!!!!!!!!

Ross was so slow in the 40 yard dash they had to time him with a calendar.

Like Skip used to say about Sid, “He’s got deceptive speed, he’s even slower than he looks”.
