Well, Shaun, the Nats are on pace for 98-99 wins. I agree that “great” is a highly subjective term, but if they were to win that many games … any team that can hit that many wins is a pretty great team.

could happen if he goes under the radar and they dont come up with the guy they want in a trade. but they wont overpay for a guy like that, i agree. they might try to give him a similar deal the the one huddy is on right now.
Cody Ross told Ken Rosenthal that he turned down a multi-year offer from the Braves this past offseason to sign a one-year deal with the Red Sox. Ross said he “liked the opportunity in Boston.” Maybe that explains the incredibly annoying bat flip after the home run in Boston
ajcbraves– He will be. “@airjomax21: Hey @ajcbraves would Ben Sheets be a candidate for Comeback player of year, or is there a games played clause?”
I figure Buster Posey’s name was etched on the 2012 Comeback Player of the Year Trophy before Scott Cousins even stood up to dust himself off last summer.
We are going to have to bet the Nats ourselves to stay out of the wild card race. Although they have owned us so far this year, that can change. I think we are as good or better, and I like for once the format where we play so many games within the division.
Jaded, I don’t think we should expect the Nationals to collapse for the simple reason that they hold a 4-game lead with less than two months to go and, even if the Braves have a slightly better roster right now, the Braves’ roster isn’t that much better.
But I would say there is a fairly decent chance for a Nationals’ collapse. Without looking at projections or anything, maybe the chances of the Braves overtaking them is 20-30 percent. I don’t know if that number’s right but I would say the Braves have a decent shot.
According to Baseball-Reference’s Simple Rating System, which rates teams based on run differential and strength of schedule, the Braves and Nationals have been essentially equal so far this season. The Nationals run differential per game is 0.8 to the Braves’ 0.6. (The only other team as good as either is the Reds at 0.6.) So fundamentally they aren’t that far apart.
One could argue that more Nationals players are playing over their heads than Braves players. Adam LaRoche is probably the most glaring example. Ian Desmond is also probably playing well above his talent level. There are quite a few guys on the pitching staff that are similar. None of their pitchers have had down seasons, except maybe a couple that you would expect, like Chien-Meng Wang and the 35-year-old Brad Lidge, who haven’t received a hardly any innings to speak of anyway.
You look at the Braves’ roster and Chipper and Durbin are maybe the only guys who’ve received significant playing time and are playing noticeably better than what we would have expected before the season started. Maybe Simmons, on the offensive side of his game, but of course he’s missed a lot of time and the shortstop position as a whole is probably about where we thought it would be.
Again, I still think the odds are in the Nationals’ favor just because they have a pretty significant lead with not all that much season left. But the Braves probably aren’t going to get any worse than they’ve been. And the Nationals have room to fall a bit, if you will.
Reed Johnson, the back up and occasional starter got 10 ABs and has 3 hits. Maholm has 1 start where he gave up 3R in 7 innings, covering for DLed Hanson.
what exactly were expectations from these 2 guys to be not satisfied so far?
It’s been 20 years, yes, but if we face them? Write it down now. It won’t be us winning that game. That’s especially true if the game is in Atlanta. Makes me sad just thinking about it now.
Few will admit it, but you know it’s very likely true. I guess we’ve got to eventually do something to win a decisive game to get me over feeling like this. Still waiting.
Since Bernadina looks like a 4th OF for the Nats, I would be OK with acquiring him to play CF, guy is fast as Bourn, catches better, couldn’t throw any worse(maybe) and I think he could steal 30+ bases and OPS around .750, what he is doing this year. Contract couldn’t be much. Allow us to get a pitcher and a LF., Plug Martin in at 3rd and here we go.
nolie, I posted Buster’s column this morning on the other blog. Crazy stuff. 16-22 million a year with the Nationals and Phillies potentially having interest. No way in hell the Braves go near that sort of AAV.
So Buster thinks Bourn is worth 16-22 million per year,
he doesn’t but he thinks some team will pay up that much. 22 is too much, i think he gets about 15 per somewhere. still way too steep. he’s a goner for sure.
Bourn isn’t worth that kind of money to any team. Strikes out way too much, shows negative emotion all the time and is already starting to show signs of slowing down….
Comment From Ben Sheets

Ben Nicholson-Smith: I see Sheets signing for $4MM plus incentives (or something like that) if he continues pitching at this level. Great pickup by Atlanta.
We need to save our money to waste on resigning Mac….sigh.
Never mind that the guy can’t play 4 days in a row anymore apparently, has forgotten how to hit, can’t see, will not lose weight, can’t throw and can’t get in front of wayward pitches anymore.
He’s not all that bad of course in actuality, but please. If we spend a fortune to keep him around for 7 more years, I think I’ll scream…..repeatedly.
That Bourn, Prado screw up play, on the heels of Chipper not being able to corral the ball down the line, was just plain bad.
Never mind Joe Simpson blathering on and on about how bad Ryan Howard looked at the plate, just an instant before his moonshot homer that at least shut Simpson up briefly….
I don’t view Greinke as an ace for a contending team. He has plenty of talent, but needs more fortitude, which he may develope. He really has not been tested under presure.
Phil (4:43) – You have identified my greatest fear (baseball-wise), which is the Braves losing to the Pirates in a one-game playoff. Such a loss would add a new chapter in the Braves’ book of late season and post-season debacles. I too need to witness a glorious Braves’ playoff series win before I can shake off this feeling of doom.
On Howard’s HR, Minor either can’t remember or taking to much of the blame, I quote, “I was trying to go away but left it more middle.” Pitch wasn’t even a strike, 3-4 inches outside. Guy just hit a ball for a HR. Pretty good coverage.
Neither has done a thing. Not that they’ve had adequate time but best move? Maybe only by default but only because the limited results so far haven’t been retched…..
If Ross is going to be Hudson’s personal catcher like Perez was for Maddox years back then Fredi can’t let himself get tricked into not putting the best team on the field to win a particular game each night. Last night Hamels, one of the toughest lefthanders in the league, was starting for the Phils, so Fredi starts 4 lefthanders McCann included. His rationale, I assume is that Ross catches Hudson so he did not want Mac out 2 straight games. That is process over substance. The best team that Fredi could have fielded last night would have included Ross catching. I am sure Hudson prefers Ross calling his games but for the sake of giving the team the best chance to win, that combo should have been broken up temporarily and let Ross caught last nights game and Mac catch tonights game against the righthander. Always put the best team on the field to win the game you are playing’ not the game tomorrow.
any team can lose to any other team in 1 game playoff. chances of that happening are pretty even. it would really suck but not exactly a debacle.
Bud has basically killed off WC with this 1-game playoff, trying to win division is the only way to go. teams are not going to “go for it” if they are out of div race, for 1-game crap shoot game.
“Really Suck”! Debacle! I think we can agree that a Braves’ loss in a one-game playoff would fall into the category of bad.
I do believe there would be an extra sting if the Braves happened to lose the one-game playoff to the Pirates on the 20th anniversary of Sid’s slide. It would be another punch to the gut. In other words, as we can agree, BAD!
A one game playoff is a crap shoot. You could win 20 straight games in the last 20 games of the season then lose that one playoff wild card game and be sent home…
It’s a debacle when it’s already happened repeatedly without fail ever since the day the gates at the Ted first swung open for baseball in 1997….
I think it’s downright bizarre myself. It’s beyond depressing now as well for me. In other words, I just expect it while hoping for something else. My disappointment is then lessened, at least a little.
3/10 and 7 inn. 3 runs = not done a thing. glad i learned something today. time to get away from this place on top.
**************
much of a thing….it’s a little something!
….Seems the ‘bumper cars’ I know of are not Bugattis……the catchers I know of are not fast–coined relatively slow cause we don’t wish to be cruel. Atlanta has a catcher [Mac] that, well….is the bumper car of modern catchers in the sense that he can hit but is slow to get going–even when that little metal plate is mashed.
I have heard the MLB playoffs described as a crap shoot. Thus, the one-game playoff would be the ultimate crap shoot within a crap shoot. Given the Braves past, can any of us feel confident that the Braves will emerge form all this crap with a WS win? What do Shaun’s statistics say about this matter?
“Mark me down as liking our Maholm/Johnson pickup. (though I called it a week before it happened…..)”
I was actually away from the blog for a week traveling to Atlanta for a game, and do remember someone actually predicting the trade. So when I heard about the trade I chuckled, and was like…someone on the blog actually suggested it…lol
“The reality is becoming clearer by the day, we are a wild card team barring some kind of meltdown by the Nationals”
A meltdown? Is that defined as the Braves winning 4 in a row, and the Nationals losing 4 in a row? Please. Let’s wait to jump off the bridge a little while after the Nationals vs Astros series.
A meltdown? Is that defined as the Braves winning 4 in a row, and the Nationals losing 4 in a row? Please. Let’s wait to jump off the bridge a little while after the Nationals vs Astros series.
Agreed. A good week by the Braves coupled with a lousy week from the Nats and the Braves are in first place.
Relax, people… still almost 2 months of baseball to be played.
You spend the money not merely on the best talent, but also the best talent available in your sorest needs! The Braves are pitcher rich, but have a weak farm system for outfielders. Constanza is a mediocre hitter, excellent fielder, with excellent speed. He cannot replace what Bourn has provided for a year and a half already.
Bourn is the number one re-signing priority for the Braves for the 2013 season because he represents precisely what our farm team is unable to provide for the next several years. He is worth every penny in today’s game a $15 million a year for five year contract, and it will take at least that to get him to stay.
Could still happen, but you gotta be in it to collapse again. Say what you want, but at least we aren’t like half the teams in baseball whose seasons are already over. Should be a fun finish to the season…
“but I have my doubts that he’ll be worth $15mil 5 years from now when his contract is coming to an end.”
No one in baseball is ever worth their contract at the end. Most aren’t worth their contract in the beginning either. I guess it is just how it goes with baseball contracts.
As mentioned, the Braves have been playing well but not gaining ground on the Nats. If the Braves are to win the East, they’ll have to beat the Nats head-to-head….. and so far they haven’t been able to do that (what’s their record against the Nats?)
The Nats are on fire right now, but the Braves can’t let that bother them. Just keep playing good ball and stay ahead of Pittsburgh for the wildcard spot. GO BRAVES !
cab: BMac did catch Huddy quite a bit at the beginning of the year…. but even so, it seems to me that BMac has gotten more and more days off than usual. Has me concerned.
One of the fantasy baseball blogs I read suggests that Uggla’s woes are due, in part to declining bat speed.
“At some point his elevated strikeout rate was bound to catch up with him, and in this, his age-32 season, it appears it finally has. Struggles aren’t completely new to Uggla; he endured an awful .185/.257/.365 first half of 2011, but unlike last season, he has been unable to get out of his funk in 2012. Here’s a telling statistic: Uggla is a .225 hitter with a 24.4 strikeout rate and 24 percent miss rate on swings against fastballs clocked at 90 mph or faster this season; he had .286, 17.2 and 16 numbers against those pitches from 2009-11. That could signal declining bat speed, and it’s enough to warrant concern that he’ll never quite recapture his past 30-homer form this year.”
The more Zack struggles with the Angels, the less they want him, the less he wants to stay there, the less other AL teams want him, the lower his price becomes….. The higher likelihood he becomes a Brave!!! (hopefully)
Yeah, let’s hope Greinke struggles from here on out so we can get him. Then we could pay $20 mil annually for a struggling pitcher.
He wouldn’t get 20mil if he struggles. More like 13-16mil, and he’d do better here. It’s the NL, and a team he likes, that plays in a more pitcher’s park.
I know he did at the beginning of the year, but Ross has caught most of Huddy’s games recently. I do think Mac’s shoulder is bugging him a little, plus, I think the team wants to be smart so he doesn’t totally wear down in the last 2 months…we’ll need him in September.

I would too…. the guy is 28… will be 29 after next year. And he plays catcher! 4 yr deal max, with an option year or 2…. avg. 13 mil salary.

You spend the money not merely on the best talent, but also the best talent available in your sorest needs! The Braves are pitcher rich, but have a weak farm system for outfielders. Constanza is a mediocre hitter, excellent fielder, with excellent speed. He cannot replace what Bourn has provided for a year and a half already.
Bourn is the number one re-signing priority for the Braves for the 2013 season because he represents precisely what our farm team is unable to provide for the next several years. He is worth every penny in today’s game a $15 million a year for five year contract, and it will take at least that to get him to stay.

Re: Uggla
