Braves are 18-8 with a league-leading 3.18 ERA since the All-Star break; Nats are 19-9 with a 3.42 ERA since break.

Shades of ‘93. These last two months might be just a little bit fun.

Jordan Zimmermann struck out 11 batters and walked 0 in 87 pitches last night to complete the sweep of the Astros.

Strasburg, Gonzalez, Zimmermann – I’d say each one of them is better than any starter we have.

Lucas Sims has officially thrown 100 innings between high school and pro ball this year. I believe they said they wanted to keep him around that.

Alex Wood at 34 IP, 19 hits, 1 HR, 6 ER, 9 BB’s, 32 K’s, 1.59 ERA for Rome so far. Be interesting to see if he is sent straight to Double-A next year or if he starts off in Lynchburg. Not sure I’d put him on the “polished” level of fellow college LHP’s Mike Minor and Sean Gilmartin – who both skipped High-A and went straight to Mississippi.

Zimmerman is the real deal. I’ve never been a Gio fan, but he’s been more solid this year than I thought he would be. He still has a few starts to prove me eventually correct, though. :-)

A common argument for women not playing in the NFL is their perceived lack of the necessary physical abilities.

Do you think women are physically unable to be NFL referees?

I’m looking forward to seeing how the Nats handle a for-real pennant race.. Only Werth really has any experience with that. What happens when they get into a couple of tight games that aren’t against the Astros, and the breaks go against them? Will the sliding shorts get a little tight?

On the other other hand, they might end up being just too young and dumb to notice; that’s always a possibility, too.

Not necessarily. Finish up the season, get him down to instructionals, and figure out the base cause of all this suckage. I agree with some that his head might be hip-deep in the problem by now, also, but putting this season in the rearview goes a long way to fixing that.

It’s not out of the realm that he finds the magic moment of instruction, gets right, and blazes into ST. I know it’s hard to envision that looking at his year, but who would have envisioned his underperformance this year off his 2011?

RHSP GUS SCHLOSSER [L 12-5, 2.99 ERA] 5.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R/ER, 0 BB, 7 SO.

LHRP BLAINE SIMS [4/03 ERA] 2.1 IP, 1 H, zeros, 1 BB, 3 SO.

LHRP MATT CHAFFEE [4.18 ERA] 0.2 IP, perfection.

3B ED SALCEDO [.250 BA] 1 R, 1 HR [12], 1 RBI [46], 1 E [31, fielding].

Ed’s not hitting for average of late, but is slowing putting up some decent power numbers. His glove is still of the ‘Marvelous MARV’ THRONEBERRY-caliber however.

Thought I’d reiterate my point from yesterday on needing another LH bench bat to replace the lack of production from Hinske…

And I’d also like to get thoughts on what others think the Braves need to do the last 51 games to overtake the Nats….

Given BOTH teams schedules, I am saying it’ll almost be impossible as I have it at Braves 34 W with the Nats going 28-22….as their schedule isn’t all too difficult either…..

Also, I once again state, Braves 4-8 against the Nats, so they’d need to go 5-1 over final 6 head to head to even split.

“We need to make like a 5/45 offer to Bourn with about a 5 to 8 million signing bonus. If he says no, so be it.. move on.”

“Olney suggests Bourn figures to get a multiyear deal in the $16-22MM per season range, and I agree.”

So we are going to offer $45-50 million and he is going to pass up $80-100 million? I don’t think so.

It’s still got to be Greinke this offseason, then look to move Hanson in some type of deal to bring us either a LF or 3rd baseman.

Unless they are increasing payroll to $110 million, there is no way they are getting Greinke.

AT-

What do you really think you’re gonna get for Hanson (realistically)?

I too want him gone as he’s getting more expensive, will never be resigned, and the peripherals don’t look good….

But don’t you think that if I know that his avg MPH of the FB has dropped significantly the last 3 years and with the shoulder and back history that scouts know this too?

DOWN ON THE FARM

ROME

GRASSHOPPER’s swarm the Legion who fight them off several times, but eventually succumb 8-9. Eight hits plate eight runs. Effecient offense, but the pitching commits an egregious error, and the defense adds two more that ultimately leads to the loss.

Lead-off CF TONY MUELLER [.267 BA] 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 SB [25], 1 E [5, throwing].

2B ROSS HEFFLEY [.289 BA] 1-5, 1 R, 1 SO.

1B BRANDON DRURY [.222 BA] 2-3, 2 R, 1 3B [2], 4 RBI [40], 1 E [9, throwing].

LF ROBBY HEFFLINGER [.275 BA] 1-3, 1 2B [15], 1 RBI [40], 1 BB.

SS KYLE KUBITZA [.231 BA] 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI [51], 1 SF.

RF WIL SKINNER [.252 BA] 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR [8], 2 RBI [41], 1 BB, 1 SO.

C CORY BROWNSTEN [.200 BA] 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B [8].

LHSP ALEX WOOD [1.59 ERA] 4.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO.

WOOD’s thrird error [throwing] of the season loads ‘um up on what should have been a force-out. A sac fly and triple later, the GRASSHOPPERS take the lead. Still he gets the last out of the inning on a SO.

RHRP NAVARY MOORE [4.21 ERA] 2.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R/ER, 2 BB, 4 SO.

Two walks and a hit….nasty combination.

Rookie RHRP DAVID PETERSON [BS 2, L 2-1, 1.93 ERA] 2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO.

Too many hits combined with a walk and an error result in a learning experience for the rookie.

LHRP IAN THOMAS [BS 2, 3.25 ERA] 0.2 IP, 1 H, zeros, 1 SO.

“Wow… Teheran gave up 9 HR in just 16 IP this last spring. In fact, he led all ST pitchers in the category.”

To be fair he basically gave up 3 homers in 14IP if you discount the 6 homer two inning debacle against the Tigers with the wind blowing out and their incredible starting lineup for ST. ;)

They can get him w/ a payroll of 95-100 mil. He’s getting Lowe’s and Chipper’s money. Prado keeps his and stays in LF, Juan plays 3rd, the CF gets Bourn’s money. :)

Here we go again – Hanson isn’t good enough to pitch in the Braves rotation, but he’s going to bring a starting LFer or 3B in return. Right.

How long do the Braves have, before they have to do something with Teheran? I’ve heard of minor league free agents, and since we signed him so young, I wasn’t sure how much longer we could just keep him in the minors.

James Shields and to a lesser extent Josh Johnson and Dan Haren will hopefully be possibilities this offseason.

I’d be sure not to tell Greinke that before he signs paper.
