TOBF I didn’t realize that BMac had stolen as many bases as he had for his career. 21! And he’s never been caught more than he’s stolen. Nice.
HECK yeah! He knows how to steal ‘em…
Ah…Love winning the series against them Fillies! Uggla had a great game—that’s very good to see. Stinky day of tomorrow, but then none for a long time (who gives only 2 friggin’ days off in August to a Southern team? Schedule must be made by a Northerner… )
Dang cab. BTW, what kinda seats you have for your season tix? Right on the 20s?
August 8th, 201210:25 pm
Shut down, door-slammin’ work by the ‘pen. 4 2/3 innings, 1 hit, 1 walk, 6 Ks. Love it. And great to see Uggla becoming dangerous again.
Worried about Huddy though. Will watch for the quotes tonight, see what he’s got to say. We need him healthy and tuned in down the stretch.
that was tony gwynn jr
Nice recovery for the Braves. It seems clear that Uggla’s slump is over! The man is making hard contact again and what a nice development that is.
Way to go Braves!! I look forward to seeing the first 6 of those 12 runs I missed because of the MLBtv issue! Happy birthday to JHey in advance!
Anyone hear the O’Malley family is interested in buying the Padres? With the Dodgers spending like they have Billions, they could really have a rivalry with the O’Malley Padres who do have a Billion.
Hudson proves again the braves don’t have a #1 starter in their rotation. This is the second time this season he has blown a lead of 4 or more runs. Hanson has done the same thing this season. So if braves somehow get into the playoffs with one of the wildcard spots, who do they start in the one game playoff? It’s hard to win in the playoffs without one dominant starter, and unfortunately Hudson and Hanson are nowhere close to being dominant.

what leadoff hitter makes $20 mil?
bourn is a hr hitter now not a base stealer didnt you know?
Brave New World
Mr. Uggla would like to thank all his loyal fans who have supported him through his dry spell – good times are just around the corner.
Blog Hero Chad goes to 4-1 on the year, exactly as we all expected back in April…
LOL DS1, unfortunately, school starts then. Can’t go. Thanks anyway! Now, if you’ll cover me for some playoff tix in Atlanta…
For football? 45 yard line
“Mixxo is OK. Old people get grumpy sometimes (I should know!)”
You’re right, DS1.
Diamondbacks lost, Cardinals losing big, and Dodgers losing early. At least on the Wild Card front things are going good
Anyone see the answer to the homers since 2004 trivia question tonight?!?
August 8th, 201210:27 pm
Okay Thanks Kelevra…
And I am just naturally a cheap sumbeach! I usually try to sit somewhere along the rail in the second deck down one of the foul lines, but in SF, my seats are $50 each and STILL in the nose bleed seats!
And he’s never been caught more than he’s stolen. Nice.
He real deceptive because if you don’t look at him long enough you can’t tell he’s moving.
Padre’s already sold, kl. Yes, the O’Malley family. And btw, one of the partners in the new ownership group is Phil Mickelson.
Worried about Huddy though.
Me too…. He hasn’t been right in a while…
August 8th, 201210:28 pm
Welcome to California. $50 seats won’t get you that close
Trivia – Alfonso Soriano
August 8th, 201210:29 pm
Wonderful win, tonight.
The opening line to Carroll’s game story is brilliant!!!
Trivia question anyone?
It was Alfonso Soriano.
Good luck on that one!
Gonna head out folks. Still daylight here, and I’ve got some broadleaf weeds to spray.
Bo Graves on Friday!
If its a one game crap shoot mgmt.will be idiotic not to start hudson
you love janet jackson huh, what have you done for me lately?
if thats the case, mariano riverra sucks as a closer when he gave up the hit to gonzales that costs the yankees the world series
August 8th, 201210:30 pm
SD tickets were much cheaper than in SF.
Nice interview from Danny U.
August 8th, 201210:31 pm
Thanks for the minor league updates, Rich, especially on Peter’s inning, and congratulations on your earlier news!
What was the trivia question? I fangraphs it and it didn’t seem right…?
Phils should have been allowed to hit off a tee until they got to within 1 run of The Braves, then Kimbrel could have some fun mowing them down.
the padres were sold between 700-800 million
the cleveland browns of the nfl are getting 1 BILLION DOLLARS
Janet was hot
August 8th, 201210:32 pm
Mike in FL – Damn, they must of had the money in their checking account. I just heard it late this afternoon and they get approval from the other owners and work out price and payment.
It takes my bank 4 days to pay a check. We must be in slightly different financial circles.
Two really big surprises tonight – One bad and one good!
Huddy gets knocked out with a 5 run lead!
Uggla gets 3 hits!
BTW, where are all the loyal Philly fans these days?
August 8th, 201210:33 pm
I bet Crawford hasn’t hit leadoff a dozen times in the last three years. And again, wouldn’t he be another reason NOT to give huge money to a late-20’s OF who’s game relies so much on speed?
I know his OPS is around .770, which is not worth $20 million.
August 8th, 201210:34 pm
Miscounted on the Padres … 7 games
So, if the Braves lose all the games to the good teams and win all the games against the bad teams, then they will go 35-16 over the final games with a final record of 99-63.
If the Braves break even against the good teams (8-8) and play .667 ball against the bad teams (23-12), they’ll end with 95-67 record.
Barring a rash of injuries, I think it’s reasonable to think the Braves win more than 90 games this year.
92 would be my low water mark.
August 8th, 201210:35 pm
I think Ted Turner bought the Braves for $14 M. Not sure but in that range.
August 8th, 201210:36 pm
matt kemp might be my favorite non brave player…guy has matured into a monster
Just had a brief discussion with my 2 Korean students about the US-Korea Women’s Volleyball game tomorrow – they agree on the likely outcome…
August 8th, 201210:38 pm
too bad Kemp is such a crappy center fielder
August 8th, 201210:39 pm
“Caseyatthebat, August 8th, 2012, 10:20 pm … “Does anyone know what kind of money it will take to keep Bourne [sic]?”
It will end up costing more money and years than Bourn will be worth. The Braves will have the cash to re-sign him, but will choose to allocate resources in a way that yields a better cost/benefit ratio.
August 8th, 201210:40 pm
yeah he should be in right field…for multiple reasons
August 8th, 201210:42 pm
I keep hearing that Gio Gonzalez will soon start “walking the ballpark.” Now would be a good time to start.
August 8th, 201210:43 pm
this is very true. they are also significantly cheaper than tickets in LA
August 8th, 201210:44 pm
I keep hearing that Gio Gonzalez will soon start “walking the ballpark.” Now would be a good time to start.
Would be a great time for the Nats to come back to down to earth, like they are “supposed” to…
August 8th, 201210:52 pm
Nationals have Dodgers (3), DBacks (3), Giants (3), Braves(6), Cardinals (7) on the tough side.
Their weak games …
If the Nats lose all the games against the good teams and win all the games against the poor teams, they would be 97-65.
If they split against the good teams (11-11) and play .667 versus the bad teams (19-10) they would be 98-64.
Nats are going to have to under-perform or Braves are going to have to over-achieve to flip the standings. But, both teams should make the playoffs.
doing the on field stuff for the braves now?
August 8th, 201210:53 pm
is it urkel?
August 8th, 201210:56 pm
Braves still need to keep inquiring about Jon Lester as he struggles this year with Bobby V in Boston. Make them think hard about saying no
August 8th, 201210:57 pm
glad to see someone other than me does the playoff projection stuff…first hour at work every monday is updating that
still wish we had gone after Gio in the offseason. Imagine him in our rotation and not in Washingtons. What a difference to both rotations.
Who will be this year’s Gio in the offseason?
August 8th, 201210:59 pm
disAstros are a dinger away from a shocker.
August 8th, 201211:00 pm
If the dufus who drove in run #3 for the disAstros had been running, instead of watching to see if his ball would be caught, disAstros would have tied it.
Instead, disAstros need a hit to win it.
They are teasing us again…
August 8th, 201211:01 pm
Houston has runners on 2nd & 3rd with 2 out…
August 8th, 201211:02 pm
i’m so glad the d-backs started losing…I was about to have to add another team to my playoff potential list until their latest slide
Nats hang on to the complete game win.
August 8th, 201211:03 pm
Man, Gio’s nasty, throwin’ the 2-seamer at 94 mph in the bottom of the 9th.
August 8th, 201211:05 pm
We oughtta go after the Astro’s Justin Maxwell to play CF for us next year. (I didn’t get any traction with this idea earlier, but thought I’d throw it out to the cocktail crowd, LOL).
the unearned run in the 7th costs the Astros the game (though I’m sure they would have found some other way to lose). Harrell pitches tomorrow but the offense probably won’t back him and the Braves will fall to 4.5 back

August 8th, 201211:06 pm
Like you were expecting something more from this group of chumps?
David O’Brien @ajcbraves
Ross got the base from Philly groundscrew; it’s going on display “I’m going to have it in my house so everybody knows I at least got one. “
nationals have 9 games vs the phils and 5 against the marlins (who for some reason play well against the nationals)….51 games left…anything can happen
August 8th, 201211:13 pm
when its sleepy time down south…
If only we had a starter (other than Sheets) who could throw that fast in the 1st…
Nice for Rossy!
August 8th, 201211:15 pm
Maxwell looks good but he’s been released twice so something is not right with him. Maybe if we loan Maholm to the teams we are playing?
But he is a great looking player along the lines of Heyward in size and strength.
Man oh man tonight was really a huge win for many reason. I have to say it would have been great to win 6-1 and I am sure everyone would have been very happy with that outcome. But in a way the fact that the Phillies score 5 runs in the B5 to tie the game up and then for the Braves to come back in top of 7 and score 4 runs. Make this win even more big most teams would have go and on lose the game after giving up 5 runs to tie the game. And his is Dan Uggla is really start to play much better hopefully he can keep this up. Also Congrats to David Ross on getting his first ever SB. Tonight was a good night because the Cards are about to lose which would put them 4 games out. So Yes it would be great to take over first place in the east and you but in order to do that we got to keep winning series which we did tonight .Now Looking at the upcoming series with the Mets. I really think that we can sweep the Mets but if we end up taking 2 out 3 from them that would not be bad either. Just keep on winning Braves

August 8th, 201211:21 pm
The word “rhubarb” just came up in vocabulary with my Korean students – I explained about the vegetable, found pictures, then pointed out the baseball usage – could not remember the origin, so I had to look it up:
Legendary Brooklyn Dodgers broadcaster Red Barber first used rhubarb on-air to describe a baseball altercation in 1943.
He said he heard it from reporter Garry Shumacher, who picked it up from another reporter, Tom Meany, who learned it from an unnamed Brooklyn bartender.
The anonymous bartender used it to describe an incident in his establishment when a Brooklyn fan shot a Giants fan.
And that’s how rhubarb became baseball slang for a fight or argument.
August 8th, 201211:25 pm
Wow- even back in 1943 Giants & Dodger fans were going at it…
(I spelled her name wrong- it’s Brittany Viola)
August 8th, 201211:26 pm

August 8th, 201211:31 pm
Great job, Carroll!!!
August 8th, 201211:32 pm
Happy B-Day Jason. Shame there’s no game tomorrow…. At least he gets the day to himself.
August 8th, 201211:35 pm
On if thought about grabbing the bag and holding it up:
“I actually thought about it, I really did. But it was still a tight game and I’ve got to keep my professionalism. But I was really excited. I was really happy. I don’t get to run too much. Sometimes in the eighth hole with the pitcher behind you…I hate it when they put the red light on me because I’m really fast.”
On if knew all that easy would have stolen more:
“You know it’s funny, Mac’s got a ton in his career and I’m just jealous. I need to catch him a little bit. He’s got like five or six a year. I have one in my career. I told Mike B when I came in after the game, I’m coming for him.”
Chipper Jones @RealCJ10
DU is back folks! MikeB went yicketty and DRoss got his first bag…ever! Nice series W. Headed to the NYC on the bus! 12-3 on the twitta!!!

Post of the night:
August 8th, 2012
J hey a meaningless double with no on
Too bad folks don’t have to assign their real names to this kind of genius.
August 8th, 201211:41 pm
From the quotes, it sounds like Ross is going back later and really stealing that base so he can put it in his trophy case.
August 8th, 201211:46 pm
Ross doesn’t have to steal it- it was given to him by the grounds crew…classy move by them
August 8th, 201211:48 pm
Good night, all!
August 8th, 201211:49 pm
